Spectacular September

Whilst out enjoying the glorious conditions this last weekend, I rode a lift with a Dad and his

two boys aged 5 and 7. Based on their grins and excited banter, they were absolutely loving the brilliant sunshine and amazing resort conditions. The Dad then remarked that “this” is why they love skiing in September! He was obviously referring to the blue skies, light breeze and the smiles on his boy’s faces and the oodles of snow. So much so, that they made plans to stay over Sunday to grab an extra day on Monday and a cheeky day off school for the boys. Now who could blame them for loving spring skiing…!With a snow pack in excess of 2m, the mountain is in great shape. One weather forecaster is predicting up to nine more days of snow - with a maximum cumulative forecast of another 40cms through until September 26th. If this occurs, it will set the school holidays up for a cracking end of season, for sure! There are deals to be had too… with accommodation offerings, rental and lift ticket discounts springing up everywhere… this makes the spring skiing offer the most compelling it has been in a very long time.

Whilst the snow pack is at 2004 levels, for the last ‘bonus week’ resort management will be reducing resort entry down to 2004 prices as well , equating to $25 per day from Oct 2nd until Oct 6th, then for the final weekend a further reduction to $15 per day. If the snow pack increases to 1991 levels or the equivalent of 298cm… we’ll drop resort entry all together for that final week. With this last point, it is worth noting that in 1991, 1996 and 2003 large “dumps” occurred in mid to late September… so I could be in trouble!Of course, if you can’t make it up for another trip this season, take comfort in knowing that ‘bumper’ snow years are generally followed by ‘even better’ years next season. Using history as a guide and in reviewing the snow stats, diligently compiled by Falls Creek Ski Patrol, there are some very interesting associations around large snow fall seasons. In almost every season since 1988 when the snow pack exceeded two metres, the following year was better again! The exceptions being in 1993, post three cracking seasons recording over 2m (1990 282cm; 1991 298cm; 1992 226cm) and again in 2001. In 2000, the snow pack hit 224cm, but 2001 it dropped to 135cm - still decent cover nonetheless.

However, looking at the graphs, there are three very strong examples where a 2m plus year is followed by a bigger season immediately after, i.e: 1990/1991, 1995/1996, and 2003/2004. Will 2017 and 2018 make the grade? Interestingly, a polynomial trend line suggests we are on the ‘up curve’ with respect to snow depth averages, post having bottomed in 2005/2006.Recalling the disclaimers from my funds management days, “past performance is no indicator of future returns”...especially given the unpredictability of weather forecasting and the science that underlies it, all bets are off as to what 2018 will deliver! For a great read on the topic of betting, risk management and why you shouldn’t hold insurance stocks in the portfolio, check out “Against the Gods: The remarkable story of risk” by Peter L. Bernstein.Foodie Tip of the Week: The Chop House… if you love meat, meat and more meat… this is the place. American styled slow cooked melt in your mouth goodness. The sides of mac and cheese with truffle oil were a hit and the beetroot, fetta and BBQ chickpea salad was outstanding. Now, get out there and enjoy the skiing, après and sunshine…! •Stuart Smythe, CEOFalls Creek Resort Management

Mid-Week Women’s Camp

Last week DWA Victoria had our first ever mid-week camp - the Women’s Camp. A select group of our female

members got to partake in the inaugural camp and it went off with tonnes of hoots that fittingly accompanied the tonnes of snow! Our participants had disabilities in the range of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Visual Impairments, Epilepsy and Acquired Brain Injuries. It’s great to see how well the ladies went on camp. Not one of them let the weather or their disabilities get in the way of achieving what they came to Falls Creek to achieve - Fun, Friendship, Relaxation and Participation in Snowsports. The group was very fortunate to have a special guest speaker deliver a talk on the importance of Women in Sport. Falls Creek local legend, Kerry Lee-Dodd, candidly delivered a fifteen minute speech to us all at the Resort Management Board Day Shelter and stayed around for another fifteen minutes so we could all get in a question or two. The members, carers and guides hung onto every word of what was an insightful, empowering and warm recollection of her life in sport from the age of fourteen. Kerry lovingly recounted the spirit Noelene Lee imparted to her - “Mum always told me I could”. Kerry didn’t stop there. We were treated to some words of motivation and wisdom to hang

onto, including tips to help us believe in ourselves. Special thanks from all the ladies on the DWA Women’s Camp 2017.As the weather calms and spring sets in, we welcome t-shirt skiing at Falls Creek and working on our goggle tans for the last time. This weekend is our final camp for DWA Victoria - Members Camp! You’ll see us out on the slopes with snowboards, skis and sit-skis. Give us a wave and don’t be too shy to strike up a chat on the chairlift or in the lift lines. We’re all on the hill for the same reason - safely participating in Snowsports. Our members this weekend have many differing disabilities and therefore levels of ability. This means that you may see some participants with standard equipment and others with a

Fantastic September

There are various aspects of the weather bureau that promote amazement - but that is another

topic. If we consider the forecasts as this edition being prepared we could be enjoying spring skiing for some weeks/months to come.As an aside, back in the late nineties, a gentleman turned up, in the resort with the family to have a look around. Being able to get onto the McKay Road, the said visitor, with his family, were pleased to see the heap of snow that was still sitting on Ruined Castle. So what did he do - he got his single water- ski out and had a go at skiing down the snow covered slope. The result “Not that easy to master, but a lot of fun, and even managed a couple of turns!” There you have it - there are many different ways of enjoying Falls Creek and the snow covered Bogong High Plains. As we go to print, with 30cm, 40cm or 50cm (depending who you listen to)

predicted, we should mention here the wonderful range of holiday activity options that are available to make your visit to Falls Creek a very memorable one.First up - dining out in Falls Creek is a given. The resort has a reputation for its diverse range of fine dining establishments and they are listed in this publication. But what are the other things to do? Let’s have a look shall we!On the back of your handy ‘less than’ pocket sized trail map is a list of the extra activities that will make your holiday much, much more than just skiing or boarding - no matter how good it is!Once you have decided to take advantage of one or more of the activities, you may make a booking by phoning the toll free number, 1800 204 424, or by speaking with any of the staff in either of the Falls Creek Sport shops - one in the QT complex at the base of Falls Express chairlift, and the other in the Village Bowl, beside the Eagle Chairlift.Snowmobile ToursOne lady came back from her snowmobile tour just raving about it. “It was fantastic! I did not believe there is so much to see and enjoy out there on the high plains. It was the most amazing experience!”And, to make it even better, the Snowmobile Tour operators are now offering a 20% discount on the cost of all tours.

As a guest in the resort, you all see snowmobiles cruising around the village as the operators go about their business. Then there are the regular SES exercises where our volunteers do training runs to keep themselves familiar with the area. Falls Creek Snowmobile Tours is your opportunity to get out onto the high plains and enjoy ‘that other world’ that few people get to experience. You can either ride your own machine (you must have a valid, current drivers licence) or you can go out as the Pillion Passenger, on the back with a competent guide. The snow, the scenery, the fresh air - you definitely ain’t gonna get in Collins Street. •Back Country ToursWhen the snow gets deep, and the slopes are steep, that’s the time to call Steve Lee and take advantage of one of his ripper back country tours. As you will know,

THE RUDI RACEAUSTRALIAN INTERSCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Division 4 girls, Ella Green, Sierra Pammer and Isabelle Bond had the best results of the day. Ella had a podium finish as an individual in the classic race, finishing 3rd with Sierra right behind her in 4th place and Isabelle 24th, giving them 2nd place as a team. Their performance in the skate relay was the best result of the competition as they blitzed the field and took out the gold medal!Boarder X and Board GS were held on Thursday with strong winds, snow and very limited visibility dampening everyone’s enthusiasm a little. In Board GS Div 4 boys, Jed, Marko and Alex finished in 9th place as a team. Div 5 boys, Madox and Ben finished in 6th place as a team with the best result of the day going to Madox who finished 4th by only hundredths of a second! Jacinta Jansen also had an excellent result in Div 5 girls, finishing in 8th place. In BoarderX Div 4 boys, Jed, Marko and Alex finished in 8th place as a team. Div 5 boys, Madox and Ben finished in 9th place as a team and Jacinta Jansen proved how consistent she is, finishing in 8th place again.

Solid Competition Weather

Eighteen students from Falls Creek Primary School returned to Mount Buller in blizzard conditions last

week to compete in the Subaru Australian Interschools Championships in seven different disciplines.Due to strong winds and heavy snowfall on Wednesday, the cross-country course was moved to a more sheltered location on the Canyon Loop trail, where the narrow course forced race organisers to run an individual start/time-trial style event. It was great that the event was able to go ahead, but extremely confusing to work out who was winning, leaving parents staring at their iPhones for live race results rather than watching the race!Division 4 boys team, Louie Elliott, Hamish Wilkinson and Isaac Armitage, were the first to race, with combined times in the classic race putting them in 8th place as a team, and in the skating relay in the afternoon they faced stiff competition from NSW teams finishing in 6th place. In the younger age-group grade 4 boys, Ben Weir, Beau Duggan and Madox Grayling had great results in the classic race, placing 8th, 18th and 26th respectively, and combining to finish 5th as a team. They continued their excellent form in the afternoon, finishing 8th in the relay. Division 5 girls, Amelie Thompson, Teyah Evans and Stevie Tanaskovic also put on an amazing performance in the blizzard. Amelie took out the bronze medal in the classic race with Teyah in 16th and Stevie in 20th place and giving them the silver medal as a team. In the afternoon relay they also skied strongly, finishing in 6th.

In the Moguls event Pepper Bowes had the best result, finishing in 7th place on a steep and intimidating course, with Div 4 boys, Alex and Hamish finishing 6th as a team, Div 5 boys, Beau and Ben 10th as a team and Div 4 girls, Ella and Belle in 13th place. We qualified two teams for GS. Div 4 boys Hamish and Jed finished 27th and 38th and Div 5 girls, Pepper and Amelie finished 29th and 50th. Jed Stanton was our only student to qualify for Skier X, and he finished in 17th place in a strong field.Overall our team finished in 4th place in the primary school division. Many thanks go to our fantastic group of parent helpers for all their support and also to Carol for all the organisation that goes on behind the scenes. With 3340 event entries, 235 Schools from Victoria, New South Wales, ACT, South Australia, Western Australia, Queensland and Tasmania, the 2017 Subaru Australian Interschools Snowsports Championships is one that we won’t forget any time soon’.•From the Ed’s point of view, thanks also to the parents, to Carol and also to Helen for supplying this report.

THE RUDI RACEAUSTRALIAN INTERSCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPSIn Memory

The Rudi Pendl race moved into its second year and one can only imagine the wry smile of Rudi

There is a cry to have a super strudel class for over 50 so stay tuned for next year. The Rudi Pendl race is now a permanent fixture in our race calendar and with the exceptional atmosphere that was created in the Village Bowl as a result of this event and the people involved, it seems a perfect way to recall Rudi and continue the great racing history of Falls Creek.Special thanks to Falls Creek Race and Events Department, the fabulous groomers, our top notch Ski Patrol, the Marshall Fireworks team, our great ski lifts staff, the Frying Pan management and crew, Barry Iddles from Elk Restaurant for the Kase Knocken, Be Foodstore staff, senior management of Falls Creek Ski Lifts P/L and our wonderful village community for making the event a great success. Then, most importantly a special thanks to the man from Mayrhofen, Rudi Pendl who made Falls Creek a home, whilst providing many of us with career chances and great long-standing friendships. An Olympic Year

How do you qualify for the Olympic Games? It is a question which dictates the lives of many

athletes, causing stress, tactics, and maybe just a slap in the face. The way in which one would qualify for the Olympics varies greatly between sports and countries, it might even be impacted by how the Selection Head feels during the Olympic meeting. But for Australian Cross Country Skiers, this is how it will go down for PyeongChang 2018.QualificationsIn the past for Australia, our Cross Country Ski Olympic Team has consisted of usually two or a maximum three athletes of varying gender. However, in Sochi 2014 we had two women and two men, becoming the largest team in history. For the 2018 Olympics, paralleling a recent rise in the performance in the sport, the Cross Country Olympic Team can send up to six athletes. That’s a pretty big team and puts us on similar numbers to countries like Spain, Ukraine, and of course well above the sheep filled district of New Zealand.TiersIt gets a little technical here, and this is where each country varies in their standards, but in Australia we have four possible tiers one can meet which dictate your selection priority. For example if someone meets tier

the rest of the world. With the best skier in the world (World Cup leader) on zero FIS points, it is a good way to know how good you are generally. The best distance skier in Australia being Barbara with an average of 58 and Callum Watson with 78. The tier four standard then, requires an average of under 100 FIS points. If more than the quota of athletes have an average below 100, then it is the skiers with the lowest average. Callum Watson, has a pretty low average of 78 and can be confident with a successful tier four qualifier. The Low DownOk so, that’s four athletes so far, Phil Bellingham and Callum Watson for the men, the same two who went to the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. For the Women, Barbara Jezersek and Jessica Yeaton look to be heading to South Korea this February. Australia has potentially two more spots. And it is likely the spots will be competed for with FIS point averages. Next in line is Aimee Watson, Callum’s sister who has already been to Sochi in 2014. Her average is 104 currently and her plan for the season early on will be to find the best races around Europe to find good low FIS points. She is looking good. We have 23year old Casey Wright currently at College in America and

one, they are selected in priority to a tier 3 qualifier. To be tier one qualified, you will be ranked in the top 30 of the Official Olympic Winter Games FIS Point List. Put simply it means you are ranked in the top 30 skiers in the world from the past season. That, Australia does not have yet… Tiers two and three are related to performance in Selected World Cup Races. To be tier two qualified, you need one result in the top 60% of the field of a World Cup. For example, come 40th place in a field of 75 racers. We have one skier currently holding a tier two qualifier, that’s Mount Beauty local Phillip Bellingham. That result was in a Skate Sprint World Cup in Davos last season where Phil placed 51st out of 95 racers.Tier three is similar, it requires a skier to have skied twice in the top 80% of the field in a World Cup race. Jessica Yeaton has met this standard with a top 30 in the PyeongChang World Cup last season, then backing it up with 44th in a field of 68 in Otepaa, Estonia. Australian Champion and Hoppet Women’s Champion Barbara Jezersek will no doubt reach this standard and probably tier two as the next season starts as she will compete in more World Cups.Tier four, and the final tier, is one purely based on FIS points. For those who are not yet acquainted with the beautiful world of FIS points, they are system which essentially every competitive skier can have and should have that ranks them against

Porepunkah’s Paul Kovacs who sit around the 110 FIS point mark. PK averaged 94 only a few months ago, so if the old dog can muster up a few quality races early on this season, he might be looking at the Olympic rings come February, probably walking down the opening ceremony with a smile as wide as his ears. Even Mark ‘recovering from glandular fever so has a lot of unmeasurable potential at the moment’ Pollock who just 12months ago was the Australian Champion for Sprint in Perisher and actually was listed number 1 for a few weeks on the Olympic List (because Perisher was the first official race for the Olympic count).Or could one of the younger athletes snag a spot? 21 year old Kat Paul, 19 year old Liam Burton and Seve de Campo (oh that’s me!) each sitting currently on 151, 137 and 150 respectively. If one of these youngsters can get their average firstly below 100 and then potentially rank 5th or 6th in Australia before January, then they will get the green light to be Olympians. (It has a nice ring to it, “Olympian”).

from Mount Beauty, you will pass Lyre Bird Creek. This was named by the SEC in 1958. A Lyre bird raised its chick just 50 metres off the side of the road.• Howman’s Gap was named in honour of Mr Fred Howman, an early cattleman in the area. When mustering cattle one year, his party became lost in the area and it has since been called Howman’s GAP!• Ruined Castles origins are unknown but looking at it will give you an idea of why it was named as such. The columnar basalt with its falling fragments look exactly like that of a ‘Ruined Castle”.• Watchbed Creek has a great story. Mr. William Wallace (one of the three Wallace brothers) lost his watch when his horse fell. The horse trampled it into the boggy mud and it was never found again. • Father Fosters (the ski run) was named after a Catholic priest, Father John Foster, who used to regularly visit Tony Green at Cooroona. As well as loving the outdoors and skiing he also loved a drink - refer photo in Bob Howe’s book on P82.If you have any more great stories about the names of places, ski runs, parks, lookouts etc feel free to pop into the museum and share them with us. The museum is open six days a week, Tuesday to Sunday during the winter season between 11am and 3pm.The museum will open by appointment for groups by prior arrangement and will be operational during summer in the busier periods (subject to volunteers). •

What’s in a Name?

Here at the Historical Society we are always investigating the origins of photographs, memorabilia,

equipment or documents. It comes with the territory. Whilst investigating one such document, we came across an interesting chapter in a book by Kay Robertson, ‘Myrtleford: Gateway to the Alps’. On page 252, Kay, with the help of the Special Officer of the SEC Mr. R M Duncan, gives us some of the meanings of places around our area. We thought that like us, you might also have wondered where these names came from, so here goes with some of the more popular ones starting with the obvious.• The cattleman originally called Falls Creek ‘Horseshoe Creek’ as the horses lost their shoes in the boggy conditions. It was officially called Falls Creek by the Country Road Board and actually boasts some waterfalls just below the present village entrance.• Bogong is an Aboriginal name meaning Big Fella. Appropriately, the latest addition to Falls Creek Art Scene, the Bogong Moth on the Water Tank recently painted by Twoone, is also called Big Fella.• Kiewa means Sweet water. We believe everybody in the valley would agree with that.• Mt McKay is named after cattleman Jim McKay and Mt Nelse was named after prospector Bill Nelse. (There is a school of thought that suggests Mt Nelse may have been named Nelson. More research coming).• Spion Kopje was named by the late George Silas Fitzgerald of Shannonvale after the Boer War. He thought that Spion Kopje looked just like a mountain in South Africa.• As you drive up Bogong High Plains Rd

The Mount Beauty Airfield will host the annual Gathering of the Moths Fly-in on Saturday 25th November.

The event is being organised by the Mount Beauty Airport Management Association Inc who manage the airfield on behalf of the Alpine Shire Council. The Association president, Tony Edwards, said “The annual Gathering of the Moths Fly-in provides a great opportunity for locals to come and get a close look at a wide variety of aircraft and chat to pilots.”The Fly-in is expected to attract aircraft of all types including vintage planes, home-builts, Cessna, Piper, Beechcraft and Mooney aircraft as well as ultra-lights and bush type aircraft that are capable of landing and taking off in 100 meters. Mr Edwards said “ This year we are also hoping (work load dependant) to have one of the firebombing aircraft on display and the general public are encouraged to come and have a close look at this unique aircraft and gain an understanding of how they work. These aircraft provide an invaluable service to Mount Beauty and the local area in times of fire threats. If available the local CFA will also be on site to demonstrate their rescue capability. Commerce and in 1985 Lyn and your Ed produced the first ever 24 page full colour brochure that represented the village and all 50 or so businesses. And that book was released to the public the week prior to Christmas in readiness for the next winter. A little sign of how good Lyn was at making things happen. There is one paragraph from a speech at the service: “Her compassion and concern was there for everyone - from the company director and CEO right through the organisation to the first year towie that was missing her mum. That concern made Gibbsy ‘The Fixer’ - there wasn’t a problem Lyn couldn’t solve, or at least find a work around to solve. Lift tickets, ski gear, accommodation for a visiting ‘VIP’? Done! A bottle of their favourite wine waiting for them? Easy! Some data from 14 years ago? On the desk! No budget for something that was needed? Lyn’s barter economy worked a treat and goods and services seemed to appear while mysterious ‘prize winners’ would enjoy a week of skiing at Falls Creek.”This village now has a fabulous museum - largely due to Lyn’s ability to save and store stuff.

Mount Beauty

October is a very important month on the Golf Calendar, not only for our Club Championships, it

is also the Nation-wide month designated ‘Golf Month’. In October all clubs in Australia are encouraged to introduce golf to as wide an audience as possible and to encourage membership and the playing of our great sport. The idea is to run something fun and social that all can join in with whether you are a golfer or not.At Mount Beauty we have organised a few events for anyone to come along and participate. There will be seven weeks of Junior Golf Clinics starting on the 15th of October on every Sunday morning at 10am and a three day clinic in the last week of the school holidays (Mon 2, Tues 3 and Wed 4 October at 10:30am. The ever popular Tuesday Twilight golf will start up again teeing off at 5pm.Two events were put forward for inclusion in Golf Month and we have incorporated both of them in our Calendar.

The first cab off the rank is on Sunday 15th October and will be a new event for most players at our club. Its title of Cross Country Golf is probably a give-away as to the format.

This event consists of a 9 hole comp with a twist. Participants will be given a map of the course with 9 ‘ holes’ marked to be played.

The hole played will not be the one you have teed off from e.g. Tee off at tee #1 but you are playing towards the 6th or even 16th hole. Pars for the ‘hole’ will be calculated by the organisers. Nibbles after the round will be provided by the inimitable Al Ferrari!Next up on Wednesday 25 October is the Vintage Golf Round. In this round everyone will play with clubs older than 40 years. Remember the old Persimmon 1 Woods and the blade-like

Our Neighbourhood Centre

There is not a doubt in the world that our Neighbourhood Centre performs a vital role in this community. It

has run on the smell of an oily rag virtually since inception and the helpers/volunteers have always done a wonderful job. But there is always a need for funds. Therefore the centre needs to fundraise to improve the building that, like any building, needs constant care. Our current project is our leaking roof over the edge of the building and the decking needs to be replaced. The centre is a recharge point for scooters and needs its disabled ramp for access. We have been fortunate with funding obtained through the Soweto choir last year organised by the late David Vigo, Alpine shire grants and other small grants. We still have a fair bit to go and would love the support with our current fundraisers of High Tea by The Lake. It is $20.00 which is cheap by any High Tea standards but hopefully on the day we can have a few raffles and maybe a few light hearted games to raise a bit more money. And then there is our Dinner & Show fundraiser at Roi’s Restaurant which

already popular is set to be a night of fun. The dress code is “Dress Up” which means something exotic, stylish or cocktail. The improvements to the building have also allowed us to make a toilet access at the rear of the building which will benefit many sporting groups and community events. The next phase of project improvements needed are replacing the kitchen floor, a replacement hot water service and painting of the entire building outside and interior. If any groups, businesses or individuals that would like to help with donations or in kind help please contact Trish (centre manager) on 5754 1166. Our aim is “Community supporting community” and we provide outreach services, courses, self- help groups, IT services and support, health awareness and exercise, business services, cafe facilities for training opportunities, catering and venue hire and so much more all delivered by a few part time staff and a huge bank of volunteers. One of the big courses is the Snow Sports Technician course which is widely recognised across all ski fields and brings the experts to us so we don’t have to travel out of the Shire.

With a little bit of fund-raising our Neighbourhood Centre will soon have a nice big balcony overlooking the lake. Pic - Ken Bell. With a little bit of fund-raising our

Our Course Term Booklet is valued among the community, not only for course information, but for the directory of community and supporting groups. Producing this booklet is a costly venture and sponsors help make this happen. Please think about being a sponsor or even sponsor an activity. Our AGM is coming up next month and if anyone is interested in joining our wonderful team of Board members we would welcome the expertise and commitment needed to keep our centre thriving. Please attend our AGM as guests and hear about what we have achieved in the last 12 months. •
