Agni Deepana – (Balancing digestive fire)

General

● Hingwastaga (CHHW)

● Paaka Choorna. May aggravate Vata. Give with ghee or hot milk, and ghee to counteract Vata aggravation. ¼ tsp straight on the tongue can be used to balance tikshna agni and reduce appetite in Pitta dominant individuals.

● Spices & food additives: Ginger, Black pepper, long pepper, ajwan, honey, ghee, basil,

bay leaf, clove, cayenne, cinnamon, black cumin, cumin, dill, Fenugreek, horseradish, marjoram, asafoetida, nutmeg, oregano, paprika, turmeric

● Agni tea: 1 quart water, 1/8 cayenne pepper (opt), 1/2 handful minced ginger, 2 tbsp sweetener, 1/2 tsp rock salt. Boil for 20 min, then remove from heat, cool for a few minutes and add juice of 1/2 lime

1. Vishamagni

● Ginger, lime and rock salt 5 min before meals ● Spicy soup - 1tsp coriander seeds, 1tsp cumin seeds, 1 tsp tamarind paste, 8-10

curry leaves, 2-3 garlic cloves, 1-2 slices fresh ginger, a little salt (grind into a paste, add 2 cups of water and boil it. Can have on its own as a drink or as a light meal with bread or rice.

● Cinnamon stick, honey and garlic store for a while ● Garlic crushed in raw honey. Keep it for 5-6 months. Eat 1 clove per day before

meal to increase agni. ● Dates & raisins with cinnamon ● 1 volume Yoghurt, 4 volumes water mix very well, add pinch roasted cumin, 2

curry leaves finely chopped, 1 pinch salt, optional: sweetened to taste. Take before meal at room temperature or warm.

● 1 tsp tamarind paste, 200ml water, pinch salt, pinch sugar. ● Paaka choorna- little bit of hot milk and melt ghee in it + add the powder

2. Tikshnagni

● Ginger and ghee ● Spice soup with less tamarind or with lime juice ● Pakaa Choorna - put it straight on the tongue to reduce hunger ¼ tsp

3. Mandagni

● Ginger and honey ● Spice soup ● Garlic crushed in raw honey. Keep it for 5-6 months. Eat 1 clove per day before

meal ● Dates & raisins with cinnamon

Under 1 year old- Take very finely powdered roasted cumin and put a small drop of honey in it. The amount of cuming that got stuck in the honey is enough to give the infant. Children 1-5 years- Half a tsp of honey + half a tsp of fine roasted cumin powder. Mix it well together and make peppercorn size balls (should be enough for 6 balls). Give 2 balls 2-3 times a day after a meal. Children 5+ years- half a tsp of honey + half a tsp of cumin powder. Make coffee bean size balls. 1-2 balls 2 times a day after meal.

● Add whole black pepper seeds or crushed seeds or powder into food

Ama Pachana – (Digesting /eliminating the Ama)

General -

● Triphala ● Dhatrei (CHDT) ● Cumin & honey: roast cumin powder with honey or pomegranate juice

● Almond milk (10 raw almonds soaked overnight and blended) mix with 1 cup warm milk add 1 pinch ginger and 1 pinch nutmeg

● Warm milk with ghee ● Oil massage

Asthma

● Coriander, ginger, garlic and black pepper boiled water ● Ginger, lime, honey and brown sugar mixture

Doses: Children 1-2 tsp diluted with hot water Elderly- 30 ml

● Liquorice ● Triphala ● Trikatu without black pepper and with honey ● Roasted cumin and honey recipe ● Apply warm mahanarayana oil on chest and back ● Drink half a tsp of mahanarayana oil (Lubricating and helps to breathe) ● Swasa Kasadee Leha- mix with some water and make coffee bean size balls. Take 3x a

day with boiled coriander water ● Talisadee (CHTL) with ginger/lime/honey mix

In crisis of Asthma- Mahanarayana oil + crushed black pepper. Drink on an empty stomach. Takes flem out. Treating a child-

● Apply mahanarayana oil on chest and back ● 1-2 tsp of ginger/lime/honey/brown sugar mix diluted with 30ml water ● Roasted cumin+honey(Check for doses under Ama pachana)

Biting Nails

Is caused by a deficiency of zinc and calcium or anxiety, insecurity and nervousness can also cause nail biting.

Bleeding/cuts (avoid deep cuts and wounds)

● Apply turmeric powder

● Apply coffee powder

Bloating

● Once ‘agni’ is corrected bloating will be reduced

● Manage constipation ● Warm oil massage (sesame oil, castor oil, mahanarayana oil)

Boils

Neelyadee oil + little bit of salt and sugar. Get a nipple plaster. Fill the empty plaster’s pocket with the oil+sugar+salt and place it over the boil. Do not use it on face! (can cause scarring).

Breast Milk

● Ghee+Milk+shatavari

Circulation (Poor)

● Ashwaganda ● Oil massage

Constipation

● Triphala. The dose of Triphala can vary with symptoms. If she has constipation, abdominal distension etc, give 2 tablets at night. if no, 1 at night.

● Yoghurt + cumin seeds + salt during day meals (not at night) ● Roasted black cumin with honey ● Raisins & ghee or dates and ghee before meals ● Prune juice before meals or soaked prunes before meals ● Raisins + honey + cumin paste before meals

● Coriander water ● Abdominal massage with castor oil or mahanarayana oil ● Liquorice/fennel tea ● Tea from flax seeds - boil a cup of water with 1 tsp and drink twice a day ● Milk and ghee before bed

Cold/ cough/congested nose

● Steam inhalation with mint, basil or eucalyptus leaves or 2-3 drops of essential oil. ● 250 g Ginger- 6x lime- 6tsp x honey - 3 tsp x raw sugar syrup. For high pitta situations,

reduce ginger. Ginger and lime have ‘melting’ qualities. the mixture can be taken 10 ml to 20 ml , with 3 times of hot water to diluted and always after meal , never give it empty stomach, best times are after lunch and dinner :-)

● Fasting, light diet, no sleep during day time ● Trikatu with honey ● Salt and turmeric water Gurgle ● 1 tsp turmeric powder 2/3 times with hot milk (not good for kapha dominant people) ● Tea: Ginger (2 parts), cinnamon (3 parts), cardamom (a pinch) add honey if you wish

once tea has cooled down. Most suitable for V and K dominant persons

Cramp

● Foment with hot salt water ● Apply Mahanarayana oil or Sarshapadi oil and massage

Chron’s disease

● Coriander water ● Pomegranate juice 2 table spoon, 1/2 tea sp honey and 1/2 tea sp roasted cumin ● 1 tea sp crushed Ajwan (caraway) seeds, soak in 1/2 cup water for 2 hours and drink. It

will help digestion and bloating. We got couple of patients who had very good improvements. When they feel bit better, they try their diet and ruined themselves. Their GUT is very sensitive and delicate. Therefore they need to be very careful. Even emotions can greatly change digestion and get worse.

Depression

● Mental and physical ama. Help remove with talking, sharing your experience and a little humour.

Diabetes

Gotu kola leaves 50g + Bitter gourd fruit 100g Mash leaves and fruit together with a little bit of water making a paste. Take 30ml of the juice per day. Can be kept in the fridge for 5-10 days. Works also to remove heavy metals as a blood purifier.

Diarrhoea

Liquids should be given in small sips. ● Pomegranate juice with honey ● Ginger juice, lime juice and honey ● Appetizer porridge for fever- roasted rice , cooked with more water and mashed. Add

salt, pepper. ● Lime juice with pinch of salt

Endometriosis

(V,P,K)

Deepana - Ginger and ghee for Tikshna Agni Pachana - Cumin & honey after meals and Coriander Water (P) or Triphala (V/K) Food - Eat 3 meals a day, pitta reducing diet, soak & cook morning oats in milk with a pinch cardamom, Observe thirst, replace green tea by cooling/calming herbal tea (mint, chamomile etc.), eat cooked foods only.

● Coriander seeds and ginger infusion. Take 3 times a day. ● Appetizer porridge for fever- roasted rice , cooked with more water and mashed. Add

salt, pepper. ● Cotton cloth soaked in vinegar then apply to the head

Hair loss/ thinning

● Pitta disorder - Massage coconut oil or kumari oil on the scalp ● Amla on hair (cooling & nutrition) ● Triphala

Hay fever

● Coconut oil or kumari oil inside the nostril or in gargle. ● Ginger, lime, honey and brown sugar mixture ● Drink warm water avoiding cold of chilled water

Headache

● Cotton cloth soaked in vinegar then apply to the head

● Apply a paste of fresh ginger on a piece of cloth and place the cloth side on forehead

● Mix white sandalwood powder with water, make a paste and apply on forehead ● Steam inhalation (specially when K is aggravated)

Heartburn

● ½ tsp fenugreek in hot water after meal. ● Coriander water ● Sago porridge made with coconut milk ● Coconut water

Insomnia

● Triphala ● Ashwaganda ● Warm milk with ghee or pinch of turmeric before bed ● Foot or body massage with warm oil (most suitable for V and P people ● Exercises ● Hot water bath before bed

Lice

● 2-3 tsp fenugreek boiled with 2 whole limes + 500ml water + boil until water is thick (20min or so). Keep it until cold. Take the fenugreek into the lime then apply over the head and wash with the juice. Do for 3 days.

Migraine

● Head massage with Kumari oil ● 1/2 tsp of turmeric, ginger in a cup of boiling water. Leave for 10mins then strain and

drink. You can have this twice a day.

Miscarriages

Miscarriages are pitta. It pushes vata too to get imbalance and enhances downward movements. Give some time to restore the balance, strength before another pregnancy. Keep her pitta reducing diet and treat with ashwagandha, shatawari and triphala. you can do massage, no limitations.

Osteoarthritis

● 1 tea sp fenugreek + 3-4 garlic cloves, boiled in 1 cup of water for 10 minutes is a very good vata pacifier. It will relax muscles and reduce pain.

● Soak cotton balls with warm mahanarayana oil, place on affected area for ½ an hour or apply warm oil and massage gently

● Triphala a little with ghee/milk ● Wrist needed to loose, so the massage should be done by thumbs, outward movements,

its more like stretching the joint outwards. Teach her how to massage wrist. Make a paste with following. 50g raw rice (white basmati is ok) 25g fenugreek seeds 3-4 cloves. powder all without roasting. 1 full tea sp powder, mix with boiling water, make a paste and apply on wrist. If possible leave it overnight. do massage and paste alternately.

Period Pain

● Coriander water 1 week before periods ● Coconut oil on lower belly and lower back

Piles

● Pinda oil massage ● Dermaved cream ● Pitta reducing diet ● More vegetables and fruits in diet ● Manage constipation

Pregnancy cautions

● No tonics during pregnancy, as they contain alcohol. Even better to stop jams, as sometimes it is bit difficult to digest

● continue shatawari, half dose. ● have a good diet

Dermaved cream (is cooling) recommended or oil (pinda, neelyadee)

Snoring

● Nilyadi oil 2 drops each nostrils and head massage ● Less stress, less weight, sleeping position. ● Clearing up ama.

Stress

● Stay calm and cool by taking long deep breaths. Breath out your stress. ● Have a massage or give yourself an oil massage (warm oil sesame for vata, sunflower

or coconut for pitta and corn oil for kapha) After massage take a hot shower or bath. ● Meditation, visualisation, prayer, singing, chanting, regular yoga. ● Analyse your stress: things you can do something about and things you cannot do

anything about. Either do something about it or surrender. ● Monitor your negative thinking and replace with positive thoughts e.g. hate with love ● Examine your job vs. your personality. If you love what you do there is no stress. You

have to discover your true role and your goal. ● Soothing bath: ginger-baking soda 1/3 cup of each. ● Yoga asanas = plow, spinal twist, locust, Lion, Lotus post, savasana ● Let yourself cry ● Laughter

● rub cut side of red (small) onion. ● apply lime juice. ● apply bit of honey . ● mixture of honey and ghee

Thyroid

Underactive (mainly vata) ● CHPK ● Triphala paste on the neck ● Mahanarayana oil massage on the neck

Ulcer (mouth)

● Make some Jasmine tea, add some sesame oil and wash mouth 2-3 times. ● mix honey and ghee and apply on ulcers time to time. ● Coriander water ● rice or sago porridge made with coconut milk. ● Try to be calm emotionally

Urinary tract infection

● Coriander water ● Coconut water ● Sit bath in cold water

Varicose veins

- If caused by clotted blood, then reduce calcium intake as it is responsible for blood clotting

- Varicose veins is a vata (vyana vata) disorder problem of poor circulation but also pitta (ranjaka pitta) blood

- Lifestyle changes are needed generally. Standing for long hours, being over weight, keeping legs down for long time, high heels are some aggravating factors.

- Daily oil massage will be helpful. Massage should do upward direction. All depend on the degree of the condition. Pinda oil is best as it has muscle strengthening property. In absence, coconut oil can be used.

● Raw brown rice & vinegar. 3 days fermented. Make a paste and apply.

Weight Loss

● (K) Garlic crushed in raw honey. Keep it for 5-6 months. Eat 1 clove per day before meal to increase agni, in the morning to reduce cholesterol.

● (K) Ginger, lime juice with a little warm water ● Physical exercise

Ashwagandha means the smell of horse, which the root emits. This plant holds a place in Ayurveda similar to that of ginseng in Chinese medicine. It is indigenous to India and Sri Lanka and other Asian countries and part of Africa. It is an erect, greys, undershrub plant. The leaves are simple ovate. The flowers are greenish yellow. The berries are small, globose, orange red when matured containing yellowish seeds. The parts used are the root, the leaf, and the whole plant. Aadaana kaala- sun rays, winds with their sharp velocity and dryness absorbs moisture from earth and body making dehydrated and weak. As coriander water is a pitta pacifier, quench thirst, alleviates dryness, it is good for this season.

Visarga kaala- Suns power is slacked by time, storm and rain etc in rainy season, autumn and winter . the earth relieves heat with rain. Sweet, sour and salt tastes which make body unctuous start grow and people start growing strength.

With light potency of coriander water, it will improve the digestive power ( dipana pachana) and minimize ama formation. Relieves cold due to proper circulation. It will clear channels which can get obstructed with increased kapha.

If there is a high P imbalance, coriander water may create nausea as the liver which is cold doesn’t want any more cold or rejects the healing. This happens especially with alcoholics or past alcoholics. Or it may indicate for pregnant women that your baby is of P constitution. You can reduce to 1 tsp instead of 3. Coriander Water

Method Lightly crush 3tsp of whole coriander seeds. Soak the seeds in 200mls of water overnight. First thing in the morning, strain the seeds and drink the water. Wait a few minutes before drinking or eating anything.

Yasti madhu / madhuka Liquorice is a native of the Mediterranean and the near East and now can be found throughout the subtropical and temperate regions of the world. It is cultivated throughout Russia, Turkey, Greece and the Middle East, China and most of Asia and Europe. Glycerrhiza glabra is a hardy perennial shrub, attaining a height up to 2.5m. The leaves are compound, alternate, having 4-7 pairs of oblong, elliptical or lanceolate leaflets. The taproot is approximately 1.5cm long and subdivides into 3-5 subsidiary roots, about 1.25cm long from which the horizontal woody stolons arise. They may reach 8m and when dried and cut, together with the root, consitute commercial liquorice. It may be found peeled or unpeeled. The pieces of

Nimba The word Azaditacta is derived from the Persian azaddhirakt meaning ‘noble tree’. This plant is indigenous to South-East Asia, West Africa and South and Central America. Neem tree is a hardy, fast growing evergreen with a straight trunk. Mature trees attain a height of 7-20m with a spread of 5-10m. The leaves are compound, comprising up to 15 leaflets arranged in alternate pairs. The tree starts producing yellowish ellipsoidal fruits in about four years and may live for more than 200 years. The parts used are the stem, stem bark, root bark, leaves, seed oil and flowers. The herb Sathavari has an aphrodisiac effect on the female reproductive organs. It is also known as sathamula because it contains hundreds of roots. This plant grows wild and is cultivated in Asian countries like Sri Lanka, India and African countries. It is a climber growing up to 2 metres in height and extensively branched. Dark green coloured leaves are like needle like, narrowed. The stem is pale grey or brown in colour and arm with strong spines. The roots are tuberous, bearing numerous fusiform, succulent tuberous roots 30-100cm long and 1-2cm thick. Flowers are tiny, white in colour, branched racemes. The maximum tolerated oral dose of the 50% ethanolic extract of whole plant was 1000mg/kg body weight in adult male albino rats. Contraindication - Hormone Replacement Therapy. History of oestrogen sensitive cancer: breast or cervical cancer/oestrogen suppressant. May increase size of breast :-) Dosage Infusion: 12-20ml – 2 tablespoons or 1-2 tablets a day. In the morning after meal. Decoction: 56-112ml – 1 cup Powder: 2-3g – ½ tablespoon Not for children under 16. Combine while ashwaghnada for a more balancing effect.

For vata take triphala take earlier in the evening as it may disturb the sleep. Or they can have after lunch. Vata can have with a little ghee. Pitta with coriander water or luke warm water Kapha with warm water For digestive issues (gastritis, loss of appetite, bloating, constipation), skin disorders, insomnia, eye disorder, hair loss/thinning/greying) There are no contra-indications. However on some people it may be less active. It is good for general health.
