REMARQUE | FAU VISUAL ANNUAL 20142
Special Thanks
Editor’s Note
The FAU Designers’ Edge student organization created the first printed issue of Remarque in Fall 2012 to showcase the creative programs in Broward. The publication is open to students on any campus. We distribute them across the FAU campuses to help strengthen awareness of our programs. Reception for the publication has been strong. Remarque won the 2014 FAU Broward Program of the Year.
The publication is a student effort. This year, the staff team was funded by a Broward Under-graduate Research Grant. The Remarque team chose the student work for the cover image. Out of the 606 submissions we received this year from 73 FAU students, we chose a piece by Adrian D. Martinez, an architecture student based on the Fort Lauderdale Campus.
The Annual Broward Juried Student Exhibition did not take place this year due to the relocation of the Graphic Design program to the Davie campus. Instead we invited designer Deanne Cheuk to jury the works that we selected for the publication. She juried the Graphic Design and Art & Photography sections but not Film, Video & New Media or Architecture due to her lack of expertise in those areas. Deanne is a New York based designer who visited the campus in April to share her work and inspire us. Her work can be seen at www.deannecheuk.com.
Designers’ Edge members, and other student contributors, helped to make this new issue come together once again. The Remarque staff worked to encourage students to submit, jury the work, organize the content, and execute the production. We juried the work down to 118 works created by 59 FAU students. I thank all of you who submitted and those of you who were any part of the Remarque team.
I hope you enjoy the third issue!

Faculty Interviews
Our success is rooted in who we surround ourselves with including professors, classmates and other col-leagues. The faculty deserves recognition for the impact they make on our lives. They are here to help us try to find ways to take risks while we have the freedom to do so. Sometimes we take our education for granted and forget the value of the classroom experience. We must always remember that knowledge is power.
A handful of students participated in these student-teacher interviews with professors that represent the work in this publication. We simply asked a list of questions relating to design philosophy and method- ology. These questions are some that I am sure most of us have asked ourselves at one point in time.
A sampling of their answers are listed here.
Linda JohnsonGraphic DesignHow do you like to tap into your creativity?I find creative inspiration all around me. You have to be open to ideas coming from any place at any time. I keep a note pad handy and write down a phrase that catches my attention or snap a picture on my iPhone that I think has potential.
Kathleen O’ConnorStudio ArtWhat advice would you give to design students?A friend of mine recently attended an art show of current artists’ work and observed, “the techniques were there, polished and self-absorbed, but the work lacked soul.” The point is the art was “good” but not inviting. The problem is how to make your work honest, inventive, reaching; inclusive to the viewer. As designers you are in the business of attraction. The following are some suggestions gathered from mentors throughout my life: Formulas don’t work. Discipline, research of your subject matter, understanding the process of creating the work may help. Be present in your environment—the 3-D space around you—recording it via drawing (one of the most accessible tools of communicating ideas) makes your final visuals compelling, perhaps because it traces back to the human hand. Robert Chambers, a contemporary sculptor, once told me that he thought that to be an artist-designer means to interact with your given space. From experience, don’t let fear get in the way of making mistakes. Make them. That’s where the creation of fresh formats may emerge. I will think about these things every day I attend to my own work. I thank my students for the expe-rience of teaching. I have learned from them. Now, I will teach myself. Note: Kathleen retired in Summer 2014.
Deirdre HardyArchitectureHow do you measure success? As a professor of this institution, I measure success based on the ability of my students to gain employment in a well reputed office. Students must keep focusing on developing a career by passing the registration exam. They should be able to gain personal satisfaction through the choice of career they made. If you hate it, it’s no good, even if you are good.
Shane Eason Film and VideoHow do you measure success? If I’m happy with a personal project from beginning to end, that’s success. Further, I measure success through personal detail and perfection of said projects. If these projects exhibit in a space that gets a profound response from audiences, that too is success.

SAN FRANCISCOAPRIL 11-12
2013
When you think “contrast,” what comes to
mind? Contrasting viewpoints; compare and
contrast; the difference between tonal levels in
a design? Whatever your vantage point,
whether you’re thinking about the graphics on
your own screen or the differences between
cultures that inform our industry, we’ve invited
our speakers and audience members to reflect
on any variation of the idea of “contrast” in the
design world for TYPO San Francisco 2013. We
hope you’ll join us at Yerba Buena Center for the
Arts this April to compare, contrast, and get
inspired!

The Amanecer De Las Olas (translates to dawn of the waves) is a proposed high-rise located on Fort Lauderdale beach that is intended to become an important example of 21st century religious architecture. The phenomenological conditions of the site were used by flipping the plan vertically to coincide with the rising of the sun.

Experimenting with perspectival illusions, the design frames several unique views of downtown Chicago to enhance the user’s perception of city life, building materiality and overall urbanism. Challenged to work in between the two iconic Marina Towers, the project called for a slim, elongated mass that expresses a sense of verticality while respecting the boat marina underneath.
