Mathematics Policy

Rationale Mathematics has both an intrinsic value of its own and also value as a problem-solving tool. Both of these aspects are important and if mathematics is taught in an exploratory, open-ended, relevant way it is both meaningful and enjoyable. It needs to be taught in an atmosphere where children feel confident to express verbally what they are thinking and learning and are willing to take risks.

AimsThe teaching of mathematics at Hutton CE Primary School is geared towards enabling each pupil to develop their learning without labelling by ability. We aim to:

- develop lively, enquiring pupils to become self-motivated, confident and capable in order to solve problems that will become an integral part of their future.

- A love of mathematics, with its patterns, logic etc.- A thorough understanding of the different methods of calculation and when to use them.- An ability to assess which is the appropriate approach, starting with mental strategies,

jottings on paper, leading to informal written methods and finally, formal algorithms.- An open-minded attitude to problem solving and an awareness of appropriate strategies.- Complete familiarity with modern technology as an aid to mathematics - Knowledge and skills to enable children to become fluent in the fundamentals of

mathematics with the skills required in adult life, e.g. money transactions, percentages, timetables, measures etc.

- Children’s ability to draw upon practical hands on experience to embed mathematical concepts.

Guidelines

The following guidelines developed from our agreed aims will underpin our planning and teaching. Pupils will be encouraged to:

Discuss their mathematics with their peers and their teacher. Develop and use precise mathematical language Use mental methods as a first choice, backed up by apparatus, pencil and paper,

calculators, computers as appropriate. Develop problem solving strategies, by deliberate identification of such strategies

coupled with sufficient opportunities to use them. Be familiar with investigative approaches, using questioning and experimenting

techniques. Work co-operatively in groups, if appropriate for the task. Be persistent in looking for solutions for tasks, which ask for sustained effort.

Believe, Achieve, Succeed. In our hands we hold the future.

Have opportunities to explore mathematics in the context of relevant real life situations( eg My Money Week and World Maths Day)

Develop logical and systematic thinking, using pattern recognition, prediction, checking, explaining and generalising.

Parents are encouraged to attend Maths curriculum evenings to become familiar with the strategies employed by school staff.

Practical activities are used as a foundation to enhance learning.

Teaching methods

Hutton CE Primary School follows the New National Curriculum 2014See appendix for the written calculation methods used across the school.

Lessons have a flexible approach to ensure pitch and pace suits the children. Use of Believe, Achieve, Succeed System (BASS) and termly/weekly assessments to

uniform planning for learning and next steps. The children in KS1, Y3 and Y4 are taught in their class groups. Differentiation is

achieved by groupings and the level of support. Additional support through the 1st class at number is available in both key stages. In EYFS the children work in small and large groups for short periods of time depending

on the focus of the week. Maths activities are accessible at all times during child initiated learning.

Monitoring and Evaluation

This policy will be reviewed every year by the Mathematics Team and the C&SC committee.

Policy reviewed: January 2017

Ratified by Curriculum and Standards Committee (C&SC) on behalf of the Governors: Mary Potter 16/01/17 (signed: Chair of Curriculum and Standards Committee)
