Water-Cooled BrakesEaton’s Airflex pneumatic water-cooled brakes feature a patented single or dual piston design that provides winches with a wide range of applied tension for precise controllability. Standard single piston elements can be retrofitted with a dual piston powerhead to provide even more control. The brake’s split wear spacers allow for wear adjustment without disassembly of the brake, minimizing downtime and maintenance costs.

Hydraulic MotorsEaton ME Series hydraulic motors provide the consistent, reliable power needed to turn winch reels or crane cable spools. Offering a double swash plate, opposed pistons, and high torque, they operate smoothly at low speed within the maximum rating with very little torque ripple. Rated pressures are 248 and 276 bar (3,600 and 4,000 psi). Torque range is up to 16,136 Nm.

Hose & FittingsWith Eaton’s new LifeSense™ condition-based, hydraulic hose monitoring system, hydraulic hose failures will no longer be a major concern for winch/crane operators. Patented LifeSense hose monitors the health of hydraulic hose assemblies, detects events that have been shown to be symptomatic of the hose beginning to fail, and notifies the user prior to failure with enough time to replace hose before it fails.

Hydraulic Power UnitsEaton offers the industry’s most complete line of mobile power units that supply hydraulic power for all winch/crane lifting functions. The line includes vertical, horizontal, L-shaped, overhead, JIC, and custom designs—with the industry’s most flexible range of standard configurations. Standard system products include simple power units, bar manifolds, and pump/motor groups that are configurable with Eaton’s Packaged Systems Configurator (PSC2.0). Welded CylindersEaton’s Vickers and Hydro-Line W Series welded hydraulic cylinders feature a heavy-duty design that provides the force and precision needed to control boom movement. The robust product line offers an innovative sealing system that eliminates leakage and offers long service life. Rated pressure is up to 207 bar (3,000 psi). Standard sizes include 102- to 305-mm (4- to 12-inch) bores and strokes up to 7,620 mm (300 inches).

Pneumatic ClutchesAirflex pneumatic clutches are used on U.S. Navy and commercial fleet vessels to power mooring winches, engine drives, and marine propulsion. Eaton Type CM air-actuated drum-style clutches feature a single-piece friction pad that increases torque and energy efficiency. An actuating tube bonded to a steel rim and male and female registers enable the elements to be easily assembled into dual and triple configurations. An updated ISO-grade, 24-balance specification minimizes engine room vibration and improves drive.

Running Anchor

ChallengeOffshore mooring winches need to safely and efficiently control the rate of payout or retrieval of an anchor rode, while holding back line pull that can be over 100,000 pounds. Running anchor requires powerful brakes to control the massive load and absorb the high heat that is generated in the process.

Solution

Eaton’s Airflex corrosion-resistant, 914-mm (36-inch) water-cooled brakes excel in rigorous and highly corrosive marine winch applications. They provide continuous thermal dissipation and high torque that are independent of speed, providing improved retarding and stopping. Protective coatings minimize corrosion.

Piston PumpsEaton’s Hydrokraft pumps have gained the reputation as the most robust axial piston pumps available for supplying fluid flow to power boom functions. They are designed for 350 bar rated/420 bar peak (5,000/6,000 psi) pressure. Hydrokraft pumps feature a cradle-type, swash-plate design that provides reliable operation and long life, plus a thru-drive design that enables multiple pumps to be driven from a single shaft. The pump line also offers rotating and internally loaded parts that are pressure balanced.

Proportional Control ValvesEaton’s Vickers proportional control valves provide precise hydraulic circuitry control on dredgers. They feature onboard electronics (OBE) and non-OBE, full functionality, a complete size range, and varying performance levels to meet various dredger applications. The KB family of proportional valves has integrated OBE with superior reliability and durability featuring digital electronics, IP658L, IP67 environmental protection, reduced power consumption, valve enable, and ramp adjustment.

Steering Control UnitsEaton’s Series 10 steering control units (SCUs) facilitate hydraulic fluid flow like no other units on the market. This highly-engineered product makes easy work out of material handling, thereby increasing productivity and reducing operator effort and fatigue. The Series 10 SCU has an unprecedented, continuous pressure rating of 275 bar (4,000 psi), making it ideal for heavy-duty dredgers. Vane PumpsPerforming as the main hydraulic pump on dredgers, Eaton’s Vickers VMQ vane pumps are the world leader in pressure capacity and noise levels. They are the highest pressure, lowest noise, fixed vane pumps available. The pumps are offered in a complete range of singles, doubles, triples, and thru-drives. Their unique wafer plate design allows for increase in viscosity and pressure rise during cold start-up—a capability not offered by competitors.

Cruising in ComfortChallenge

When Rodriquez Cantieri Navali was commissioned to start building the first of five 52-meter (170-foot) wave-piercing catamarans, the Italian shipbuilder turned to Eaton for hydraulic components. The hydraulics circuitry was needed for the vessel’s two sophisticated stabilizing systems that control roll and pitch, ensuring cruising comfort even at speeds up to 40 knots.

Solution

Providing overall management of the stabilizer systems are numerous Eaton components, such as reliable Vickers PVM Series axial piston pumps with pressure compensators. Both the 75- and 250-liter PVM low-noise pumps operate at zero or maximum working pressure, with the added capacity of the 250-liter style to operate at an intermediate, dual-pressure setting. A Vickers KBSDG4V3 proportional directional control valve, featuring electronics and integral feedback, achieves fast response time and the accuracy demanded in the application.

Results

With the help of Eaton components, the stabilization systems can reduce heeling up to 90 percent, thereby optimizing comfort during high-speed cruising.

Relief ValvesEaton’s Vickers direct-acting relief valves provide a compact and cost-effective solution for handling high pressure and flow requirements in split barge hydraulics. Direct replacements for competitive styles, Eaton direct-acting relief valves are an economical solution for safety circuits. They offer a rated pressure of 400 bar (5,802 psi) and flow up to 350 lpm. The valves are available in cartridge, subplate, and inline mounting styles in sizes 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 25, and 30.

Hose & FittingsEaton offers a wide variety of low-, medium-, and high-pressure braided hose and fittings for connecting all split barge hydraulic components. Our spiral hose styles, offered in 4- and 6-wire constructions, provide maximum durability and long-lasting performance in applications with demanding requirements.

Steering Priority ValvesVickers PFRD/S Series cartridge-type steering priority valves integrate split barge hydraulic systems, optimizing system performance and reducing possible leak points. Hardened working parts also limit leakage and extend service life, making the valves ideal for use in tough marine applications up to 280 bar (4,060 psi) maximum working pressure. They are available in sizes 12, 16, and 20, and are rated to 20, 40, and 60 gpm, respectively.

Providing Massive Force

Challenge

A European dredging and marine contractor needed eight hydraulic cylinders for four split barges. The massive cylinders, with a bore size of 780 mm (31 inches), not only needed to be custom made, but they also needed to be delivered within 10 months.

Solution

Applying its unmatched competency in large-bore cylinder production, Eaton produced eight Hydrowa XL Series cylinders weighing 50,000 pounds each and delivered them on time for hydraulics integration on the barges.

Results

The Eaton cylinders provided the massive force—15.000 kN—required to separate and reconnect the split haul of the dredging barges.

The axial, open- and closed-circuit pumps feature a cradle-type, swash-plate design that enables multiple pumps to be driven from a single shaft. Challenge

MAN Diesel & Turbo of Copenhagen, Denmark, needed high-performing pumps for 2,300-ton Intelligent Engines that would propel oceangoing vessels. By providing continuously variable fuel injection and valve timing via the pumps, the “camshaftless” engines would offer unlimited flexibility, enabling them to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Therefore, the pumps needed to provide non-stop 30,000-hour performance.

Solution

Eaton’s Hydrokraft piston pumps with 500 ccm/rev displacement and 350-bar (5,076-psi) maximum operating pressure met the service life requirements, while at 300-bar (4,351-psi) continuous pressure for most of the duration. Eaton worked with the University of Dresden to design a custom valve plate that enabled the pumps to run clockwise and counterclockwise without risk of cavitation.

Results

The pumps operate in two quadrants with increased efficiency in an open circuit. In the event that the engine’s direction of rotation and the controller demand signal are not synchronized, an additional custom check-valve block creates a shortcut between the pump inlet and outlet, helping to prevent failure and damage to the hydraulic system.

Eliminating Maintenance

Challenge

Replacing hauling winch friction drums and clutch elements—which had an operating life of a mere 80 to 100 hours—was the highest maintenance and repair action for a branch of the United States Armed Forces. The military unit investigated numerous products to improve the service life of these components and reduce overall maintenance costs for the hauling winches.

Solution

Eaton drums, which are centrifugally cast from aluminum bronze with an extremely durable surface of titanium carbide, were tested with no measureable wear after a 500-hour run. Following high-horsepower testing at an additional 100 hours, the drums wore only a negligible 0.003-inch on the diameter.

Results

By eliminating maintenance time and costs, the Eaton drums have been approved for fleet-wide use. Their service life in the initial application is over 500 hours, and they are expected to last the life of the hauling winch.

Filtering out dirt and debris

The job function of Eaton’s filtration equipment is probably most important at sea, where the loss of fluid power can be devastating. Eaton contamination and condition-monitoring equipment ensures hydraulic components and systems keep twisting, turning, or moving by filtering dirt and debris from hydraulic fluid—the lifeblood of your ship’s hydraulic systems. We customize our filtration and strainer equipment to your material, space, and weight requirements. And to make sure our products are working hard to detect and flush out fluid contaminants even when your ship is rocking in high seas, we shock test each component to industry standards. With a service life of over 20 years, Eaton filtration equipment helps ensure reliable marine power.

Fabricated and Cast Strainers with Manual or Automatic CleaningFabricated and cast pipeline strainers protect valves, pumps, compressors, condensers, flow meters, spray nozzles, steam traps, and other critical components. The 2596 automatic self-cleaning strainer provides continuous, efficient removal of entrained solids in systems that require uninterrupted flow. The strainers are available in sizes 1/4-inch to 60 inches.

Fluid Analysis and MaintenanceEaton offers measurement, diagnostic, and analysis technologies for monitoring andcontrolling mobile and stationary offline filtration units. These technologies improve the cleanliness and quality of operating fluid, thereby preventing early wear and tear of system components.

Stainless Steel Pressure FiltersEaton’s high-performance stainless steel pressure filters significantly improve hydraulic system cleanliness and are easy to operate and service. They protect downstream components from contamination beyond the recommended cleanliness level. Their stainless steel construction withstands the corrosive effects of saltwater.

Mechanical Cleaning FiltersDCF Series filters are considered the most efficient, mechanical cleaning filters on the market. Ideal for highly viscous, abrasive, or sticky liquids, DCF filters operate at a consistently low differential pressure and deliver simple, reliable operation. They are capable of retentions as low as 25 microns.

Filtration SystemThe ClearAmine™ sustainable filtration system provides an efficient method to remove harmful solids from the amine loop. Continuous amine filtration is achieved with a slip stream process or single unit system that eliminates the need for bags or cartridges used in disposable media equipment. A multi-bank configuration can also be used for larger or more complex operations.

Filter SystemEaton’s REACTOGARD® V filter system provides protection for fixed-bed catalytic reactors. Cleaning cycle times of less than one minute ensure high productivity is maintained. The system’s efficient design eliminates headers, dramatically reducing installation costs and maintenance requirements.

Providing Power Control and Protection

DC Control Contactors ME DC Industrial contactors are designed for heavy industry service and are suitable for use on moving machinery. These contactors are for surface mounting on steel panels with front-of-panel wiring to control starting, stopping, reversing, and regulating functions of the DC motor.

Surge Protection DevicesEaton’s industrial/commercial surge protection devices (SPD Series) ensure that equipment is protected with the safest, most reliable, and most advanced UL 1449 3rd Edition certified surge protectors. The array of features, options, and configurations ensures there is a unit for all electrical applications, including service entrances, distribution switchboards, panelboards, and point-of-use applications.

Uninterruptible Power SystemsThe increasing amount of technology equipment for onboard applications presents challenges to the electrical power supply of a vessel or rig. Although sophisticated in design, this equipment can be damaged by power disturbances or function improperly. Eaton offers a complete portfolio of uninterruptible power systems (UPSs) and power quality solutions that are essential for offshore applications.

Power Control Contactors The XT IEC Series includes reversing and non-reversing contactors and starters, as well as overload relays and accessories. Enclosed control options include metallic and non-metallic enclosures with circuit breakers, and North American or European fuses. The XT line of IEC motor control is not the same as traditional motor control designs. XT was designed to be engineered better.

Medium-Voltage Circuit Breakers Eaton's VCP-T drawout and fixed-type medium-voltage circuit breakers are spring actuated and feature short circuit breaking current ratings up to 25 kA and continuous current ratings up to 2000A. Smaller and lighter than comparable breakers and designed for use where space is limited, the VCP-T breaker family is small without compromise.

Marine-Rated Circuit BreakersProviding circuit protection for global applications, Eaton Series G molded case circuit breakers feature advancements in arc interruption that allow high performance in smaller sizes. One-third less space is needed for frames up through 630 amperes. Common internal threads reduce accessory inventory. Electronic trip units and ground fault modules reduce the risk of equipment failure.
