Introduction
FEYCOLOR Industrial Floor Systems4
General Processing Instructions
Substrate preparation Cementitious concrete or screed surfaces must be dry, firm, stable, rough and free from laitance, dust and grease. According to the recommendations of the German Commission for Reinforced Concrete (DafStb), pull-off strength of the prepared concrete substrate (e.g. for surface protection systems OS 8 to 12) should be generally on average > 1.5 N/mm2 or ≥ 1.0 N/mm2 as lowest single value. The test can be performed with a tensile tester of Class 3, DIN 51221, tensile force 100 N/s (for elastic coatings 300 N/s). The concrete moisture at the surface must not generally exceed 4 % by weight (measurement: CM-device).
Suitable methods:High pressure water blasting, shot blasting, wet blasting, sand blastingMill or grind, if necessary The concrete surface must be vacuumed after treatment with an industrial vacuum cleaner (even in case
of pre-treatment with water) Holes, cavities and rough irregularities have to be levelled with an appropriate primer or mortar resin as
binder and an aggregate of quartz sand. Please observe the mixing ratios mentioned in the Technical Data Sheets.
Damp concrete substrate
Special RELAFLOOR coating systems can be applied to moist concrete. The substrate should not be covered by a film of water. The substrate should look only slightly damp.
Oily substrate If the concrete substrate is oily, the contaminated area needs to be milled off. If applicable, smaller areas can be prepared with a solvent-borne primer (RELAFLOOR 1510). The concrete must be treated first witha suitable cleaning agent such as Betonox 20 oil remover (www.metallit.de), Rhobalan IRL or Rhobalan 18Oil ex (www.rhoba-chemie.com). The cleaner is applied in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Afterwards, the substrate is rinsed with water, vacuumed and dried.
Mastic asphalt Bituminous substrates of mastic asphalt screed must be sufficiently sound (e.g. Class GE 10). Fuel residues must be removed. The splintered aggregate has to be freed from bituminous binder (approximately 75 % of the aggregate must be exposed) with a proper surface preparation method. Usually this is achieved by intensive shot blasting or slight milling.
Chemical Purification Substrates contaminated with oil or grease must be cleaned prior to coating. To this end, use a high pressure cleaner and additional wetting agent, for example CLAN 200 (www.ct-Heidelberg.de). Subsequently, the entire substrate must be washed with plenty of water. Allow sufficient drying before continuing the process.
Expansion joints Dynamic cracks reveal often a lack of expansion joints. In such cases, expansion joints must be installed in an appropriate area. Existing expansion joints must be renewed and must not be coated.
Cracks Cracks in the substrate must be closed properly before coating.
Pressing water Pressing water can cause permanently damp substrates. Before coating, it is essential to renew profession- ally the structural waterproofing and to allow the drying of the substrate.
In case of one-side moisture penetration apply 2 coats with a spreading rate of at least 900 g/m2 of the film forming special primer RELAFLOOR 1580 2K EP HS.

General Processing Instructions
For concrete protection and repair systems based on reactive resins
Delivery RELAFLOOR-reactive resin products are delivered already pre-dosed in the right proportion (2 components: resin „A“ and hardener „B“).
Material preparation The component B (hardener) is mixed into the component A (resin). It is necessary to ensure that the complete amount of hardener is added to the component A. Use a suitable stirrer (stirring advice with continuously variable speed control) to mix both components homogeneously. The mixture has to be stirred until it is free from streaks and a homogeneous colour is attained (approx. 3 – 5 min). The temperature of the two components should be between 15 °C and 25 °C while merging.
After mixing, pour the mixture in a clean container and stir again thoroughly (repotting).Do not apply directly from the packaging!
Application process After mixing, RELAFLOOR coating systems are applied by roller, trowel or spraying. Priming and impreg-nating materials are poured on the dry or prepared substrate and spread evenly with a rubber squeegee. To improve the wetting and spreading it is recommended to finish by rolling crosswise with sealing brush or short pile roller. Solvent-free primers should be sprinkled with quartz sand.
RELAFLOOR reaction resin materials are used as self-levelling coatings or as trowelled screed if applied in thick layer. The materials are spread with a squeegee or rather with a trowel rake and optionally smoothed with a finishing trowel. Coatings and self-levelling mortar that are not sprinkled should be reworked with a spiked roller that removes any trapped air and may improve the surface finish. Mortar systems are installed with special tools (large rakes, straightedges, screed sledges, etc.) and afterwards compacted through a power float with finish plates or float pans, possibly also by hand.
Temperature influences
For processing, the ambient temperature and the temperature of the substrate are the crucial factors. At low temperatures (winter), the reaction is delayed. Moreover, the material consumption rises due to the increased viscosity. More binder is needed! The curing of the coating is retarded, and thus the usability. At high temperatures (summer) the curing reaction is accelerated. The processing time is reduced. Therefore, only the amount of material is to be prepared that can be applied within a certain time. Priming and sealing work can only be carried out at constant or falling temperatures in order to minimize the risk of blistering as a result of incalescent air in substrate pores; this should be even considered for applications on indoor surfaces exposed to direct sunlight.
Humidity/Air moisture The relative air humidity must be considered during processing. The values specified in the technical data sheets must not be exceeded. The temperature of the substrate should be minimum 3 °C above the dew point temperature (see dew point table p. 23). After applying, the resin systems must be protected from moisture (rain, dew, wastewater, etc.) for about 4 to 6 hours. The moisture causes blushing and / or stickiness on surfaces coated with epoxy resins and blistering or foaming of polyurethane coatings. Nevertheless, underlying material cures properly. Due to the fact that the adhesion of subsequent coatings is reduced in these areas, the surface needs to be blasted and refinished.
Waiting times for subsequent layers:Wet on wet: Process immediatelyNon-sprinkled substrates: Max. 24 hours (with some exceptions)Sprinkled substrates: Unlimited, if necessary repeated cleaning required
FEYCOLOR Industrial Floor Systems6
Substrate Test Methods
Prior to coating the floor, the substrate itself and the coating conditions must be checked and if necessary, prepared accordingly. To facilitate this preparatory work, the main criteria are outlined below:
Compressive Strength The compressive strength should be at least 25 N/mm2. At lower levels, a consolidation of the substrate is required. Should you have additional questions, please feel free to contact our customer service. Generally, the higher the compressive strength of an existing substrate, the better the durability of the coating. The compressive strength can be measured with a rebound hammer (Schmidt hammer).
Adhesive tensile strength DIN 1048, Part 2
The tensile bond strength describes the force acting on an area. To ensure an optimum adhesion of the coating system, the substrate‘s tensile bond strength should be min. 1.5 N/mm2. This can be determined with a pull-off adhesion tester. The tensile strength can be improved by mechanical cleaning (grinding, milling or shot blasting).
Temperature The object and ambient temperature is measured with a thermometer. Please refer to the checklist on the following page to assess the required coating temperature.
Relative air humidity The relative air humidity can be measured with a hygrometer. The ideal values for a coating can be found in the checklist on the following page.
Substrate moisture measurement
The CM measurement (carbide method) is a chemical method to determine the moisture content in the substrate. The substrate must be tested for its water content and thus for its ability to be coated. The maximum moisture content depends on the type and quality of the substrate and should principally be less than 4 %. In case of moisture penetration the coating may be damaged through delamination or blistering.
Examination for cracks
To facilitate the elimination or bridging of cracks it is convenient to differentiate them regarding their form and size (hairline cracks, net cracks, joints cracking, dynamic cracks). Fine hairline cracks can be bridged with RELAFLOOR coating systems. For larger cracks a special treatment is needed. In this concern, please contact our expert advisors.
Check for contamination
The contamination of floor areas can be checked by visual inspection. Afterwards all contaminations should be remove by mechanical or chemical cleaning (see substrate preparation). If the impurities are not identifiable and deeply penetrated into the substrate, an expert should be consulted.

Creation of slip-resistant floors
The following chart serves as an aid to create slip-resistant floors:
The method to assess slip resistance is regulated by the German Standard DIN 51130 „Testing of floor coverings; determination of anti-slip properties – Workrooms and fields of activity with slip danger, walking method – ramp test“.
The R-value runs from R9 to R 13 and indicates the slip potential. Coatings with rating R 9 satisfy the minimum requirements and coatings with rating R 13 satisfy the maximum requirements on slip resistance. The following table shows the angle of the ramp at which slippery occurs and is used to establish a classification R value.
