Reinforced Concrete
Materials: Concrete
• Cement • Fine Aggregate• Coarse Aggregate • Admixtures
• Comp. Str. 2500 psi to as high as 20,000 psi. Usually 3000 to 7000 psi
• Stress-strain behaviour:
• Static Modulus of Elasticity
• Poisson’s Ratio 0.11 to 0.21, usually taken as 0.15
• Shrinkage• Creep• Tensile Strength 8% to 15% of Compr. Str.• Shear Strength 1/3 to 4/5 of Compr. Str.
Reinforcing Steel• Plain or Deformed steel bars (re-bar)• Dia. Indicated as fractions of an inch as:
called as #3, #4 and #5 respectively. The bars are available from #3 to #11 and very large bars as #14 and #18
&
Re-bar are marked for identification by manufacturer as shown
Advantages Concrete• Considerable compressive Strength• Resistance to fire and environmental effects• Very rigid Structures• Low maintenance• Long Life• Economical• Possibility of use of local materials• Does not require highly skilled labour• Can be cast into variety of shapes
