“Let the Church always be a place

for Mercy and Hope,

Where Everyone is Welcomed Loved and Forgiven.”

(H.H. Pope Francis)

THE LATIN PATRIARCHATE

The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem (LPJ) was restored in 1847, and since then is promoting the best interests of the local communities it serves. Today, the Patriarchal Diocese oversees about 150,000 faithful in four countries, Israel, Palestine, Jordan and Cyprus, covering a rich tapestry of cultures, languages, religions and traditions. Serving all with special emphasis on the support and care of indigenous Holy Land Christians remains the enduring mission of the Mother Church, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem.

In 1927, an earthquake stroke the area, and Reineh was the most affected village. After this, the Christians started to build their houses in what we call today ‘New Reineh.’ In the 50s, the people were living in New Reineh, and the school and parish were still in located in the Old Reineh. Consequently, the Latin Patriarchate purchased a land in new Reineh area, and the current school was built on it, and the name of the Parish was changed from St. Joseph to St. Joseph the Worker. Today, the total number of students in the Reineh school is 862 (689 students are Christians). The Reineh Latin Patriarchate Kindergarten has a total of 155 students (128 are Christians).

In 1971, Scouts groups for girls and boys were established and still work till nowadays. Different prayer groups and activities for different ages including kids, youth and elderly people are present in the Parish.

BACKGROUND

Reineh

Reineh is an Arab village in the Galilee, located between Nazareth and Cana of Galilee. As of 2004, Reineh is home to 15,300 residents, of which 80% are Muslims, 20% are Christians.

St. Joseph Parish was establishes in 1878 in Old Reineh together with the boys school. In 1922, a new branch of the school was opened for the girls after the arrival of the first two Rosary sisters to the town.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

St. Joseph Church in Reineh is small compared to the number of parishioners and faithful that visit the Church on Sunday masses, weddings, funerals and the different liturgical events. The Parish priest together with Bishop Giacinto Marcuzzo, LPJ Vicar for Israel and the engineering team, proposed a project to enlarge the church, in order to be able to accommodate the 850 Latin Christians of Reineh for the different masses and occasions.

The project consists of adding two wings to the church accentuating the cross shape plan of it. The existing church has a capacity of 112 seats. The proposed enlargement adds to the church other 112 seats for a total number of 224 seats. This means that the number of seats will be doubled by the end of the project.

In order to add these two wings, having an area of 45 square meters each for a total of 90 sq.m., four bearing columns from each side have to be cut, after reinforcing the structure by four IPB500 galvanized steel beams. In spite of that, the church will be stiffened in the short direction contributing to its stability and its resistance against earthquakes.

This addition requires adding the same auxiliary areas (90 sq.m.) in the ground floor under the church, as shown in section A-A of the attached plan, in order to reach to the floor level of the church.

BENEFICIARIES

The direct and ultimate beneficiaries of the project are the Reineh parishioners that attend the church on Sunday masses, weddings, funerals and the different liturgical events. Moreover, all church visitors and priests will be benefited from enlarging the church. The indirect beneficiary of the project is the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, that strives to provide the best for the parishioners and all faithful, and to allow the continuity of the LPJ biblical mission in serving its communities in the Holy Land.
