CHCCSL001 Establish and confirm the counselling relationship
CHCCSL001-S-AT-001
About your assessment These assessments will give you the chance to complete the same tasks that counsellors
undertake in the workplace. These assessment tasks reflect the work and performance that is
expected from counsellors in the workplace.
You will complete four (4) assessments for CHCCSL001 Establish and confirm the counselling
relationship:
Assessment 1: Develop a counselling relationship and plan with Darren
Assessment 2: Develop a counselling relationship and plan with Lee
Assessment 3: Develop a counselling relationship and plan with Claire
Assessment 4: Showcase your knowledge of counselling basics
Preparing for assessment
It is important to prepare for your assessment tasks so that you can do your best work. You
should prepare for assessment tasks the same way you would prepare for work tasks:
Read all of the instructions and information you have been given
Review any processes you will need to follow
Read any forms, template or other documents you will need to use in the assessment
Think about the workplace (Find Your Freedom) rules, goals and priorities
Think about your client’s needs, preferences, background and the outcome you hope to
achieve for them
Collect all of the resources, tools, documents or people you will need to use in the
assessment tasks
Planning your assessment order and timeframes
Before your assessment you should review all of the assessments and tasks to see whether
you need to complete these in a particular order
What to consider when planning this assessment
Deadlines for this assessment Recommended order of tasks for this assessment There are no time limits for these
assessment tasks.
You should consider the length of a
normal counselling session and
complete Assessment 2 Task B,
Assessment 3 Task B and Assessment
4 Task B, in less than 45 minutes.
Each of your assessments can be completed separately if
you prefer.
Assessments 1, 2 and 3 follow the same counselling
process for three different clients. In the assessments you
will work with clients who present different levels of
difficulty so it’s recommended that you start with
Assessment 1.

Creating great work
Your assessment is not graded. Instead you need to meet all of the assessment requirements.
Everything you need to do, day, write, know or show your assessor to achieve a satisfactory
outcome on (pass) are listed in the “Your assessor will confirm” section of each individual
assessment.
In each assessment and task your goal is to receive a mark of ‘satisfactory’ which will mean:
you have completed all of the sections or steps in the assessment,
you have followed all of the instructions in the assessment,
you have completed the task to the standard you would need to in the workplace,
you have given the best work or advice for the situation the assessment is based on.
Getting help
If you are unsure how to complete an assessment or do not understand a part of the process
it is important to ask for help. When you need help it’s best to approach this the same way you
would in a job:
Review the learning content in case the information you need has already been
provided,
Contact your assessor to clarify the assessment before you begin,
Plan ahead so that you won’t be rushed if it takes a few days to collect all of the
information you need.
To get help from your assessor you can RTO: record the method of contact the student
should use (for example “…contact then by phone on 0000 000 000). You may also like to
insert a hyperlink for email for web forms to improve user experience.
Reasonable Adjustment
Reasonable adjustments are changes which can be made to assessments to make sure that
people with disabilities or limited access to resources are assessed fairly. A reasonable
adjustment can be used to change the way you are assessed, but cannot change the work
you must do or the quality of the work.
Sometimes, reading, writing, speaking and physical movement are requirements of the
nationally recognised training package your assessment is based on. When this happens not
all reasonable adjustments can be applied.
This assessment has been designed to assess you using the methods that are most similar to
the processes and practices of the workplace. This means the assessment should not be
changed unless it is absolutely necessary. If you believe you might need a reasonable
adjustment, you should speak to your assessor before beginning this assessment.

Submitting your assessment
You should submit your completed work at the end of each assessment task.
Many of your assessment tasks will follow on from previous tasks so it is important to ask for
feedback and confirm you have completed each task satisfactorily before moving onto the
next.
You completed work must be RTO: record the method of submission the student will use to
submit their work to the assessor (for example “…uploaded to the learning portal’). You may
also like to insert a hyperlink to improve user experience.
Before submitting your work, you should check you have:
followed all of the instructions for the task,
included your name and the date you completed the work on each document you
submit,
included your name in the filename of the files you submit, and
checked the quality of your work.
Text documents FYF documents Audio Recordings Film Recordings
When you submit text
documents check the
spelling and grammar of
the document. Check
your work for plagiarism
and originality.
When you submit FYF
documents check you
have followed all
instructions in FYF
templates and any FYF
policies, procedures
and factsheets
referenced in the
template or instructions.
When you submit audio
recordings check the
audio quality of any
audio recordings and
submit a consent to be
filmed form for every
person whose voice is
captured on the
recording.
When you submit film
recordings check the
visibility and audio
quality of any film
recording and submit a
consent to be filmed
form for every person
whose image or voice is
captured on film.
Understanding your assessment results (marks)
Your assessor will review your finished work against a marking guide. The marking guide the
assessor uses is the same for every student to make sure the process is fair.
When all of the requirements in the marking guide are not covered your assessor will give a
mark of ‘not satisfactory’. If this happens you will have another chance to complete the
assessment.
Whichever mark you’re given, it is important to ask for feedback and review your own work
with a clear head to see where you can improve for next time.

Counselling session one: Darren Myers
Hi
Thanks for sending through the review of Darren’s Counselling intake form.
I think we’re ready to begin Darren’s first session.
Can you please contact him and make a time, and then facilitate the session?
The process for the session is outlined, step by step, on the Counselling procedure
(session one) so please read this before the session. I’d also suggest having a
printed copy handy during the session so you can refer to it if you need to.
After the session you’ll need to record your case notes for Darren. I’ll touch base
with you about the case notes later, but I would suggest taking some notes
(discreetly) during the session. You can use the Case notes template to draft during
the session if you like (I’ve attached a copy).
Good luck!
