In patients with duodenal ulcers, the hyper secretion of acid is the primary causative factor while in gastric ulcers; it is the weakened mucosal resistance to acid which causes ulcers. Therefore, all factors which increase acid secretion will play an important role in the etiology of ulcers.

Causative Factor:

• A family history of ulcers.

• One has irregular food habits and mental stress or strain.

• Peptic ulcers can be developed in highly nervous, emotional, ambitious or aggressive individuals.

• It is also caused due to excessive consumption of strong tea, coffee, spices, alcohol, tobacco and drugs like steroids and analgesics.

• Another important cause is smoking. It is very strongly related to the occurrence of ulcers as nicotine present in cigarettes has a vasoconstrictor effect resulting in reduces blood flow to the mucosa and hence decreased resistance.

Diet and Feeding Patter:

During peptic ulcers one has to follow a bland diet (which is free from mechanically, chemically and thermally irritants) as recommended by the dietitian.

One needs to take frequent feedings as to enable the stomach contents to be continuously diluted and neutralized.

Easily digestible fats like fat of whole milk, egg yolk, cream and butter must be used in moderate amounts as they decrease the emptying time of the stomach and reduce motility.
