At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

• Identify the signs and symptoms of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI)

• Discuss the controversies in the field of mTBI

• Utilize evidence-based assessment tools for evaluation and treatment of mTBI

• Describe treatment options and apply specific strategies to improve cognition

• Evaluate the timely and judicious use of cognitive treatment in mTBI

Kevin Crutchfield, MD, is the director of the Comprehensive Sports Concussion Program at The Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain and Spine Institute. Dr Crutchfield is a stroke neurologist, with expertise in cranial blood flow and transcranial-Doppler sonology. He is board certified in psychiatry and neurology. Dr. Crutchfield earned his doctorate in medicine from Georgetown University, interned at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado, and completed a residency in neurology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He was a senior staff fellow in metabolic neurology at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, and trained in transcranial-Doppler sonology at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He holds a faculty appointment at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences and remains an active researcher and consultant to the US military regarding the long-term effects of traumatic brain injuries. Dr. Crutchfield has been selected by the Baltimore Ravens medical team, the NFL concussion committee, and the NFL Player Association Concussion committee to be the Raven's independent neurologist for concussion evaluation. He has also been selected to serve on the NFL Players Association Concussion Committee and was elected to the Board of Directors of the American Society of Neuroimaging.

Martha S. Burns, PhD, CCC-SLP, has been a practicing speech language pathologist in the Chicago area for more than 40 years. She serves on the faculty of department of communication sciences and disorders at Northwestern University and has been a consultant to The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago for 35 years. Dr. Burns is a fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and has received honors from Northwestern University, Evanston Hospital Corporation, the American Speech Language Hearing Foundation, and St. Xavier University. She has authored 3 books and more than 100 book chapters and articles. Doody’s rating service selected Dr. Burns’ Clinical Management of Right Hemisphere Dysfunction as one of the best health sciences books of 1997. Dr. Burns also wrote Burns Brief Inventory of Communication and Cognition, a book about aphasia and the title inventory instrument, which helps practitioners to determine the cognitive or communicative skills that are damaged in patients with neurologic injury and to select appropriate interventions and treatment targets.

From the SouthFrom downtown Baltimore, take I-83 north (Jones Falls expressway) to Exit 10, Northern Parkway west. At the third traffic signal, turn left to West Belvedere Avenue. Sinai Hospital is on the left. Continue past the main entrance to Belvedere Garage on the left.

From the NorthTake I-83 south. At junction with I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) enter I-695 west (Pikesville direction). Re-enter I-83 south at Exit 23. Proceed approximately three miles and take Exit 10, Northern Parkway. Head west on Northern Parkway. Turn left at second traffic signal, onto West Belvedere Avenue. Sinai Hospital is on the left. Continue past the main entrance to Belvedere Garage on the left.

From the EastTake I-95 south to Exit 64, I-695 west (Baltimore Beltway, toward Towson). Take Exit 23 to I-83 south (Jones Falls Expressway).
