What is the High School & Beyond Plan?

A plan that specifies how you will meet your graduation requirements and what you will do following high school.

There is a component of the HSBP that needs to be completed every year, from 8th – 12th grades.

We use Xello as a platform for students to create and revise their High School & Beyond Plans. You have access to Xello

right now!

What does this mean?The LWSD is determining which options will be available to our students. They

may include the following:

~ Pass the SBA in ELA & Math

~ Earn Dual Credit (example: passing college-level math and English classes in Running Start)

~ Earn a specific score on the SAT/ACT or on AP or Cambridge exams.

~ Meet standard on the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery)

Wow. That’s a lot of stuff to figure out. Where do I start?

Think about what is working well for you this year and what isn’t. What do you want to be different next year? The

same?

Will you have after school sports? A job? A sibling to care for? Will you have enough time

for friends, family, sleep?

What are your interests? Are there classes that sounds like something

you’re really interested in?

Remember BALANCE! Challenge yourself but don’t

overstretch yourself.Consider how many hours of

homework and studying each class will have.

Okay, so now what do I do?Now that you know what you need to DO to graduate, you can start planning HOW you will get there!

You should have the following items:• Your transcript• A blank credit check form• Your laptop• Your Course Selection Worksheet

What do I do with my transcript and credit check?

You will use your transcript to check off the corresponding boxes on the credit check sheet. Also,

make note of the classes you are in this year.

Use the JHS Course Catalog (online!) if you have questions about which classes count in what category.

This is a tool for you to keep…spend some time at home going over it.

Let’s take a look at your Course Selection WorksheetCompleting this worksheet involves talking to your teachers and your parents. Here are some important things to remember when completing your Course Selection Worksheet:

1.) Write your name on it.

2.) Write the due date across the top: WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 15TH!

3.) Remember that ALL 7 boxes for EACH semester MUST be filled in (creating a full course load). You must also choose 6 alternates at the bottom of the page.

4.) Teacher initials are required for any advanced or honors course. Monday, 1/13 Is Teacher Signature Day and you will be expected to obtain signatures on or before that date.

5.) Student & parent signatures are required!

• Focus on your strengths!

• Consider how many hours of homework and studying each class will require.

• Ensure you will have enough time for studying, hanging out with friends, work, family…SLEEP!

• Don’t sign up for a class just because your friend does.

• MAINTAIN BALANCE!

Thinking about one of the special programs, like Running Start, WANIC or STEM at JHS?

Take college classes on a college campus, while earning both high school and college

credit.

Questions? Come to one of the Running Start Info Sessions. The Info Session is the first step to take in learning more about

Running Start.

WANIC classes are career and technical classes

located at schools around the region. Most WANIC classes are half-day. Open to 11th and 12th graders.

At JHS, we have the STEM Global Health program.

Students take English and Anatomy/Physiology with

an emphasis on Global Health.

Talk to your current teachers about what class they recommend you take next year. Consider an Honors or AP class even if haven’t thought about it before.

Teacher Signature Day is Monday!

You will need to have your CURRENT teachers initial your Course Selection Sheet ONLY for the

following courses:

➢ENGLISH: Honors- or AP-level➢MATH: ALL levels of math➢SCIENCE: AP level➢SOCIAL STUDIES: AP level➢WORLD LANGUAGE: ALL levels except for

year 1➢RESOURCE: ALL

Finals steps….• Beginning Monday (1/13) after school, Skyward will be open for

you to enter your class requests online. This is a REQUIRED step.

• Instructions for entering your class requests in to Skyward will be posted on Monday (1/13) afternoon on the JHS Counseling website.

• You must enter your requests in to Skyward AND turn in your Course Selection Worksheet (to your 2nd period teacher) NO LATER THAN 2nd period on Wednesday, 1/15.
