Honors Requirements

We encourage any Pomona student who is interested in taking Honors classes to enroll in them, provided the student and parent have read and understand this contract describing the level of work expected in an Honors course. Honors courses are considered to be solid preparation for Advanced Placement classes.

Honors classes move at a faster pace, cover more material at a higher analytical level. Honors classes often require nightly homework. The breadth and depth of Honors courses are demanding and rigorous. Students should take into consideration their schedule and extra-curricular activities when choosing to enroll in an Honors course(s).

Honors courses are designed so that students remain in the course for the entire year. Students who earn an A, B, or C will receive a weighted grade (5-point scale) and an Honors designation on their transcript.

AP Requirements

Pomona strongly recommends that a prospective AP student previously has earned As for two consecutive semesters in a regular class or Bs or higher in an Honors course in that subject area.

AP classes move at a faster pace and cover more material at a higher analytical level. AP classes often require nightly homework. The breadth and depth of AP courses are demanding and rigorous. Students should take into consideration their schedule and extra-curricular activities when choosing to enroll in an AP course(s). Most AP courses have extra fees for textbooks and other supplies and many courses have summer assignments that need to be completed in order to be successful in the class.

AP courses are designed so that students remain in the course for the entire year. If a student needs to drop an AP class, the parent needs to contact the students counselor to start the drop process. The final decision to allow a student to drop is made by the principal.

Colleges and universities only give credit or placement for qualifying exam grades, not AP course grades. In order to receive a weighted grade and the AP designation on your transcript, you will be required to take the AP exam in the spring. Students who do not take the exam will lose the weighted grade and will receive regular course designation on their transcript.
