The problem of unknown devices
With the increasing use of mobile devices, the RoS IT Team needed better visibility of the devices connected to the network whether owned by RoS itself or by visitors and other end users, no matter where they were connected.
Any new network access control system would need to replace the time-consuming and labour intensive job of disabling un-used or un-recognised devices – if the devices could be detected.
It seemed that the only alternative to the current system at present was the time-consuming and cumbersome process of using statically configured Mac addresses to switch ports. But this was made more difficult – even unviable – by the fact that RoS users move around regularly and take their devices with them.
To solve the problem, RoS decided to undertake a full tender process to
Registers of Scotland (RoS) is a government agency that employs around 900 staff and is responsible for compiling and maintaining records relating to property and other legal documents in Scotland.
It ensures that every property in Scotland is protected for its owners, which in turn enables confident land and property transactions. It is a stable system that is recognised by the World Bank as underpinning the Scottish economy.

source a best-of-breed network access control solution that would allow them full visibility of their network and allow them to control access to all devices connected to it without the very time-consuming management overhead of the current system.
Accordingly, a full procurement process was put together and a detailed Request For Information was opened up to suitably qualified bidders.
Why RoS chose the ForeScout solution
The tender process attracted a high number of responses. After an exhaustive process of evaluation, comparison and testing, RoS selected ForeScout CounterACT supplied by integration partner Foursys as their preferred Network Access Control solution.
The main attraction of ForeScout was its completely agentless solution, requiring
no software to be deployed to end-user devices, no hardware or network reconfigurations and full control via an intuitive, single management console which is used to set up, roll out and adjust policies.

The agentless technology of ForeScout meant that deployment would be much easier than other NAC solutions, and once policies were set up they would require very little ongoing management.
Additionally, ForeScout CounterAct could integrate with the systems RoS already had in place such as the existing Antivirus platform.
Installation and deployment facilitated by Foursys
The installation of ForeScout at RoS was carried out by a Foursys Security Engineer who, after completing the installation provided RoS with a personal mobile number and email address should any issues arise.
This aspect of the deployment particularly impressed Muhammad Lateef, Network Engineer at RoS who said: “I was seriously impressed with the technical knowledge of the Foursys Security Engineer, and his attitude to setting things up just as we wanted them.
“The Foursys Security Engineer really knew his stuff and went out of his way to make sure we were happy with the way the product was installed. He even gave me his mobile number so I could call him in case of any issues.”
New levels of network visibility
In the first few months RoS used the new ForeScout CounterAct system for monitoring only. As promised and expected, the system provided visibility of all the devices connected to the network.
I’d say that from the sales
process through to installation
[...] the Foursys team are ‘simply
the best’.
As it sits alongside the main core RoS network, the ForeScout policy set up has proven very easy to adjust. Policies can be switched off or on with a single click.
Where RoS needed further advice, for example where certain specific configuration changes have been needed, Foursys have continued to provide post-installation support via WebEx in order to demonstrate to RoS staff how to make the changes.
Testimonial from RoS Network Engineer Muhammad Lateef
Muhammad Lateef says of the system, “Quarantining suspicious devices is really easy with the ForeScout CounterAct, and we haven’t even pushed the solution to its full potential yet.
“It provides a wealth of information to my team in troubleshooting network issues”.
Commenting on the service received from Foursys he continues: “I’d say that from the sales process through to installation, product support and ongoing relationship management, the Foursys team are ‘simply the best’.
