Problem Statement• Employers demand real-world experiences

• Students need hands-on skills development

• Equipment and software are expensive

• Difficult to get budget/funding for labs

• Quick obsolescence, because ICT evolves so quickly

• Common struggles getting admin support for labs

• Installation, maintenance, management & support

• License agreement challenges

• Faculty inadequately compensated for lab mgmt.

• Technical support for students and faculty

• Students need access to labs on their timeframes

NDG Netlab+

• Server appliance by Network Development Group

• Software tools preloaded for academic

institutions to host real lab equipment, virtual

machines and lab content at a location for

trainees to complete labs

• Solution allows faculty and students to access

labs remotely, so they do not have to physically

be where lab equipment physically is

• Already used by at least 7 Bay Area colleges.

Physical Host

The physical lab facility requires ($90K in upgrades; $250K in-kind value):• Data Center Space

• A physical room or space in a physical room for racks and equipment • Physical Security

• An ability to control access to Data Center space to prevent theft and unauthorized access to equipment

• Climate Controls • An ability to control the temperature and dust in the Data Center space, to keep

equipment cool and clean• Reliable Electricity

• Consistent and ideally redundant and backed up supply of electricity needed by equipment in the Data Center space

• Reliable High-Speed Internet Access • Adequate bandwidth to support large required access to the systems by its users

Purchase and installation of new and donated equipment and software:• New Equipment ($630K)• “in-kind” Equipment (on loan) ($600K)

System Capacity

Purchased and donated equipment will support:

• at least 288 simultaneous users (9 PE (Professional Edition) Systems• more than 16,000 three hour lab reservations in a 24x7 week

Faculty pedagogy changes:

• Students self-schedule lab access• Rather than everybody has to come to the physical lab at once

Page 19: Regional Shared ICT Labs Cabrillo and Los Rios Other colleges.

Projected Impact

To estimate remote lab facility participation, utilization and impact, this project conducted a survey of relevant programs at BACCC colleges.

• 24 colleges responding

• 280 courses leading to industry certifications

• 547 sections of those courses will utilize the

labs annually

• 11,350 students will use those labs annually
