Stage is set for stronger than expected housing market(NC)—According to

a survey conducted by Royal LePage Real Es-tate Services and re-leased in January, Ca-nadians could see the average price of homes rise over the coming year. A strengthening economic recovery and low interest rates are behind the company’s forecast. At the same time, the prospect of rising mortgage rates may prompt height-ened buyer activity ear-ly in the year.

Trends in the housing market continue to be driven by the lingering after—effects of the re-cession,” said Phil Sop-er, president and chief executive of Royal LeP-age Real Estate Servic-es. “Canadians realize that interest rates are unsustainably low and that homes will be-come effectively more

Regionally, the stron-gest price appreciation of the cities studied is expected in mid—sized urban centres where affordability is better than the national aver-age. For example, in

Across Canada, the average price of a home is forecast to rise 3 per cent over the coming year to $348,600 while the number of transactions is expected to drop 2

expensive when mort-gage rates return to normal levels. We will likely see more price appreciation early in 2011 as some buyers complete transactions in advance of antici-pated higher borrow-ing costs.”

Soper added, “2011 is expected to unfold much like 2010, when close to 60 per cent of sales volume occurred in the fi rst half of the year in anticipation of interest rate increases that never material-ized. However, hous-ing market activity in the fi rst half of 2011 will be modestly closer to the norm, as last year’s phenomenon was exacerbated by mid—year tightening of mortgage accessibil-ity and the introduction of HST in Ontario and British Columbia.”

Winnipeg, St. John’s and Fredericton, two—storey homes below $300,000 are still widely available. De-mand in these cities is expected to be strong, putting upward pres-sure on home values.

For most of us the end of winter is synonymous with freshness and freedom. How wonderful it is to once again enjoy meals cooked on the barbecue and smell the freshly cut grass. Of course, laying claim to our decks, yards, and patios once again means doing some basic maintenance: cleaning the pool, removing snow fences and other winter protection from trees and shrubs, raking the lawn, and perhaps giving a fresh coat of paint to the garden shed.

For aficionados of sport fishing and boating, now is the time to service your outboard motor, check the sails of your little yacht, and get ready to launch. This is also the perfect time of year to sell a used boat or look around for a new one. Road warriors are getting out their motorbikes to enjoy day trips on sunny country roads, or they’re making reservations for longer trips through new regions or across the country. For more conventional travellers who long for a change of pace, why not real-ize your dream of hitting the road by buying or renting a motor home or a tent trailer? Imagine being care-free and able to camp comfortably in places of your own choosing.

Whether you were born to be wild or raised to sip drinks on a sun lounger, the spring season is a unique opportunity to please yourself. So when the warm rays of the sun and summer are knocking at your door, say “hello” and invite them in!

How “the big difference” can make a big addition to your retirement savings(NC)—You know

what it’s like. Two weeks ago your lunch cost about $9 a day. Last week it was $10 and this week it’s up to $11. These days, spending generally rises very stealthily and those small price in-creases can have an increasing effect on your long–term sav-ings goals.

With that thought in mind, if you were to brown bag your lunch every day for a year instead of buy-ing it, you could save upwards of $2,000 a year (based on a $10 lunch purchase made fi ve days a week). Go a step further and add in the extra you spend opting for the more expensive wine in the liquor store, or the cost of upgrades on your

Automobiles

• Research your pur-chases. Find out what the dealer paid for your de-sired vehicle and compare it with the sticker price before negotiating a fair deal.

• Options and ex-tended warranties: These can add 10 to 20% to your cost. Again, research them in advance so you know exactly what you want.

• Consider lightly used instead of new. Yes, new cars have a special feeling. But it lasts about two months and then your car has road salt on its fenders and crumbs

“Enjoying some of the fi ner things in life is the reward for working hard, but for many of us, sometimes today’s ‘wants’ get in the way of tomorrow’s retire-ment savings needs,” says Carol Bezaire, vice–president of tax and estate planning, Mackenzie Invest-ments. “This is what we’re calling the Big Difference: the many small things you can do today to provide a bigger amount more for your savings.”Mackenzie Invest-

Homes

• Thinking of pur-chasing a home? Arrange for a pre–approved mort-gage to avoid over–spending on a home you can’t af-ford

• A pre–approved mortgage will also help you negotiate your purchase with confi dence, be-cause you’ve got a budget in mind

• If you’re a fi rst–time buyer, consider dipping into your RRSP pool to bor-row up to $20,000, or $40,000 for a couple, through the Home Buyers’ Plan. The withdrawal is

Creating a safe environment for children on a farm

Avoiding farm accidents through prevention

National Agricultural Safety Week, from March 13 to March 19, is part of a three-year agricultural safety campaign that cov-ers implementation, doc-umentation, and training.

One particular aspect of the campaign is safety for children who live on farms. In rural Canada, many children grow up on family farms and ranches. These farms are business-es which usually count on the contribution of all members of the family, including children. While children may not be responsible for carrying out complex tasks, they

might frequently play in barns or in fields near a working parent or farm employee. Some safety guidelines are important in order to keep children safe around basic equip-ment, vehicles, and farm animals.

An American pub-lication entitled North American Guidelines For Children’s Agricultural Tasks offers many useful safety tips.

The guidelines help parents and farm own-ers decide if children between 7 and 16 are ready to perform particu-lar tasks, such as operat-

ing a tractor, haying, car-ing for farm animals, and manual labour. For fami-lies who wish to make use of this resource, it could easily be accom-panied by a fun teaching opportunity such as sit-ting down with a child to draw a safety poster or a drawing, perhaps one that illustrates a daily chore or the proper use of farm equipment versus dangerous practices.

Consult the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association, at www.casa-acsa.ca, for addi-tional resources and teaching support.

This March 13 to 19, 2011, the annual Canadian Agricultural Safety Week will take place in order to educate agricultural workers about how to avoid farming accidents through prevention.

The safety campaign’s theme, “Plan. Farm. Safety.” is in year two of a

three-year run. Last year, the focus was on draw-ing up safety plans; this year, the second phase, “Farm”, will encourage farmers all over the coun-try to implement their safety plans, along with the support of documen-tation and training.

Statistics have shown

that fewer than one in five Canadian farmers has a safety plan ready at hand for his or her work environment. And yet every year, about 115 people are killed and at least 1,500 are hospital-ized for accidents on the farm, according to the Canadian Agricultural

Injury Reporting pro-gram.

A safety plan might include some simple steps that can be worked into a daily routine, such as turning off a machine before working on it or wearing a seatbelt for any vehicle that requires it. All workers must learn to

be alert to their environ-ment so they can keep it safe.

A safety checklist is available for farmers in many Canadian prov-inces; it covers the dif-ferent aspects of the workplace such as first-aid equipment, tractors and machinery, build-

ings and workshops, storage and chemicals, and livestock handling. For more information, consult the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association’s website at www.casa-acsa.ca, or your provincial govern-ment’s agriculture depart-ment website.

Don’t delay…these two simple tasks will keep your family safe(NC)—Never put off

until tomorrow what you can do today.

Most people not only relate to this phrase, many will say it was coined specifi cally for them. At some time, all of us can be guilty of putting off the sim-plest of tasks. Most are harmless, but some can be deadly.

A home safety expert with Kidde Canada, the leading smoke and carbon monoxide alarm manufacturer in the country, urgently reminds us to never procrastinate those things that can keep our families safe.

“All deaths from fi re and carbon monoxide poisoning are tragic,”

says Carol Heller of Kidde. “But prevent-able fi re and CO poi-soning deaths are the saddest and most frus-trating since we have the power to change the outcome by tak-ing just a few simple steps.”

Heller offers these home safety tips to help protect your fam-ily from fi re and CO tragedy.

CO Prevention:

• Install one CSA–ap-proved CO alarm on each level of your home and out-side sleeping areas.

• Test all CO alarms monthly and re-place them every fi ve to seven years.

• Test all smoke alarms monthly and replace them every 10 years, whether battery operated or hard–wired.

• Change batteries at least once per year.

• Prepare a fi re es-cape plan with your family and practise it, ensuring you identify two exits from every room if

ers, ranges and clothes dryers (snow, ice, leaves, garbage etc).

Fire Prevention:

• Install one cUL–approved smoke alarm on every level of your home and outside or in sleeping areas (if you sleep with your door closed).

• Change the batter-ies at least once per year.

• Have a licensed in-spector check heat-ing systems and other fuel–burning appliances annu-ally, including fi re-places.

• Keep clear all ex-haust fl ues or ducts used by water heat-

possible. Consider buying a two–storey safety ladder to en-sure there is a sec-ond escape route via a window.

REMEMBER: Es-cape is always your fi rst priority. More fi re and carbon monoxide poisoning safety tips can be found at www.safeathome.ca and www.endthesilence.ca.

Regular training for a safer working environmentA recent study showed that farmers rated them-

selves with a high grade when it came to how they perceived their safety habits. The reality, how-ever, is that the agricultural industry is one of the most hazardous industries for work-related accidents. In order to close the gap between per-ception and reality, the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association’s (CASA) main mission is to provide education, tools, newsletters and up-to-date documentation on safety.

CASA will be sponsoring the upcoming Canadian Agricultural Safety Week to reinforce safe farm practices. During the campaign, held from March 13 to March 19, the focus will be on integrating a safety plan into farm life through the training of employees. Indeed, education and information are the most reliable tools to create a safer environment in any workplace. If you’re a farm owner or manager, safety guidelines can be integrated into regular staff meetings. If a

new piece of sophisticated equipment has been purchased, remind your staff of the necessary safety precautions, invite one or two workers to participate in a demonstration, and compare the differences with the older equipment.

Some engaging and interactive educational tools that have been developed for farm work-ers include the “gravity fl ow wagon,” which is a visual display that explains how a person can suffocate in a grain bin. Another, which can be presented as a training game for co-workers, is the “chemical look-a-like kit.” Here, work-ers must differentiate between a safe chemical and a poisonous one. These well-crafted teach-ing tools are available from CASA for anyone working in an agricultural environment. For more information, visit the CASA website, at www.casa-acsa.ca, and look under “resources” for more information about teaching kits, work-sheets, and videos.

Avoid identity theft in fi ve easy steps(NC) - According to Sigma

Assistel, a Desjardins Financial Security subsidiary specializing in telephone assistance ser-vices, identity theft is becom-ing more common in Canada. In fact, you may already know someone who has been vic-timized by this crime. Worse yet, you may become a victim sometime in the future.

What is identity theft?

It occurs when someone ob-tains another person’s person-al information without consent (such as a credit card number, driver’s license, social insur-ance number, date of birth, etc.) to commit a crime like fraud. Once armed with this information, an identity thief can easily defraud victims of thousands of dollars.

Luckily, there are steps that you can take to prevent this crime from happening to you.

Five easy steps to protect yourself against identity theft

• Systematically shred all unnecessary documents that contain any personal information that could be used to identify you, such as your date of birth, home address or social insurance number.

• Never confi rm your PIN, credit card numbers, SIN, driver’s license or other

personal information over the phone or e–mail unless you initiated the request.

• Collect your mail every day. Or, if you’re about to go on vacation, ask a trusted friend or member to collect it for you.

• Only do business over the web with reputable compa-nies that have high Internet security standards.

• Use a credit card with a low credit limit when

making online purchases.Identity theft is a troubling

trend, but forewarned is fore-armed. Know the risks and know how to protect yourself. And if identity theft should happen to you, contact your fi -nancial institution immediately. For more information about protecting yourself, visit www.assistel.com.
