News from around the APS regionsNewsletter 01 I April 2021

My name is Paul Swales and I am the chair of the East Midlands regional committee. I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all APS members in the East Midlands. I am a chartered civil engineer and CDM adviser at WSP, seconded to Lincolnshire County Council Highways.

I would like to introduce you to Allan Binns who is new to our committee. Allan is architectural director of Ryder Architecture where he oversees the practice’s health and safety policy including its principal designer service.

The other committee members are:

Tam Bream is head of consultancy at Callsafe Services Limited where he specialises in construction and CDM training;Derek Fenwick is an architectural technician and principal designer at the Evans Partnership;David Matthews of the Waterman Group is a principal designer, chartered civil engineer and CDM/PD adviser; and Mark Richards is a chartered electrical engineer, healthcare authorising engineer and CDM adviser.

Members of the committee cover a wide range of specialisms in construction health and safety and provide a service to our regional members, feeding back to HQ any issues you wish to voice. Please let us know if you have any questions or suggestions.

APS has adapted to the challenges of the pandemic by rolling out an extensive programme of webinars on a wide range of topics from all sectors of the construction industry. We hope to resume face-to-face local meetings when Covid restrictions permit. In the meantime, please contact us if you wish to give a presentation or if you know anyone who could do so on their specialist subject.

We look forward to hearing from you, or meeting you, once we can get back to something approaching normal service!

East Midlands - A welcome

Introducing the Team

South West England

A Welcome

Welcome to the South West Regional area of the newsletter. My name is Lesley and I am your regional chair.

Since January we have held a CPD event featuring a speaker from our local HSE covering the construction review. We hope soon to put on a further event talking about ecology and, once the pandemic is over, we are looking to organise a couple of site visits.

Your committee is currently meeting bi-monthly via Zoom and members have been very busy:

Niall Carter has written a synopsis, ‘Inadequacies of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 and other Building / Construction Regulations’. He would be glad to hear regional and national members’ views. Please contact him at: [email protected] for a copy; and

Sue Wilton attended the Wales CPD webinar in January which covered fire safety management. She is writing a case study on her experience of best practise in fire safety on construction sites. Hopefully, by the next newsletter, it will be available to anyone who is interested. Hopefully, South West regional members have found the branch and HQ webinars of interest. But, if you have a particular topic you would like to see featured, don’t hesitate to contact me. And, if you have a particular interest and you would like to share your experiences with others, please get in touch.

I look forward to meeting you when circumstances permit.

Northern England

Let’s meet the Northern England region committee.

Chair: Kevin Bainbridge.Kevin has been an APS member since 2013 and has been on the committee since 2017. He is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Building. Kevin is principal consultant on CDM matters in the Wood Group’s Gosforth office where he is the principal designer on internal projects and principal designer adviser and CDM adviser supporting external clients, designers and contractors. Kevin loves spending time with his family, going on weekend walks and being a massive James Bond and Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie nerd!

He is chartered civil engineer with over 28 years’ experience in the design, procurement and site supervision of infrastructure projects. He has worked on many high profile projects in the north-east of England and throughout the UK as a planning supervisor and CDM co-ordinator / principal designer. Russ is a past member of the ICE expert health & safety panel and co-authored the CITB designer guidance for CDM 2015. Russ plays the drums and his claim to fame is recording with Peter Hook of New Order.

He is a fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineer with over 31 years’ experience in the design, procurement and site supervision of infrastructure projects. Malcolm worked in Middle East before returning to the UK and re-joining the committee. He chairs the APS governance committee

He has 10 years’ experience in structural engineering, health and safety management and health and safety in design. He is a member of IOSH and holds the highly regarded NEBOSH diploma. In his spare time Tim likes nothing better than playing sport and to challenge himself completing in crazy ironman endurance events across the world. He is a former English skiing champion.

He holds the NEBOSH national certificate in construction health and safety and is on the Institution of Civil Engineers’ advanced health and safety register. We are planning future CPD sessions and joint events with both the Chartered Institute of Building and the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technology as well as a site visit to a large construction site project.

We would like to hear from regional members about what you want from CPDs or if you would like to present a topic. Please do get in touch!

Scotland East

Scotland East’s first online event

Scotland East’s first online event was held just as this newsletter was going to press. APS members from across the UK joined speakers from Jacobs and Balfour Beatty for a talk about dualling the A9 from Luncarty to the Pass of Birnam. We hope to be back in the autumn with more events – either online or in person depending on Scottish Government restrictions.

The Scotland East committee relies on volunteers. Following the retirement - from work not just from the committee - of several long-standing members we are now in desperate need of extra hands to help out with organising and arranging local events.

Serving on the committee also provides excellent access to APS CPD and, hopefully, working with like-minded colleagues. If you are willing to help please contact [email protected] or any of the staff at HQ who will pass on your details.

Scotland North

Get to know us

My name is Andrew Gardiner and I am the chair of the Scotland North region. I thought you might like to get to know us a little better.

Scotland North is the furthest north APS gets and our patch covers an area from Aberdeen in the south to Lerwick in the north. We also cover the country, side to side, from Stornoway to Peterhead. We have just welcomed William Ross to the committee as a new co-opted member. William has a wealth of CDM experience and is currently employed with the Highland Council. We also have: Eric Davidson - who has finally become a chartered quantity surveyor. He is a graduate of Robert Gordon University and is currently working on an exciting project providing CDM adviser services; Neil Ferguson and Leslie Hutt, who work in construction from the architects’ point of view. They believe APS needs to build and maintain a body of knowledge, advocate for the role of risk management in construction, business and general wellbeing and support and enhance the role of the architect and other members of the project team; and Paul Davies - our secretary – who joined the committee in 2018. Paul is an operations supervisor and fire risk assessor with Safehands Health and Safety Consultants working across the UK on construction health and safety and CDM. His current focus is on raising awareness of fire safety and the environmental impact of construction activities. The committee feels the current APS CPD is a step in the right direction and helps draw together knowledge and experiences as we all move forward in as safe an environment as possible. To this end they are joining to be discussing a range of issues including a recent article in Project Scotland which made reference to the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS) and that found 80 per cent of 900 construction businesses had projects postponed or cancelled because of Covid-19. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the APS team for all their assistance and support with the committee and helping us out as, and when, required.

Yorkshire

A highly successful webinar

The Yorkshire region held a highly successful webinar - Fire safety: updates & overview -on Thursday 18 February 2021. The webinar was very informative and feedback - not only from our region but nationally and internationally - was excellent.

Our next webinar will be held on Friday 14 May 2021 when we will welcome Ray Bone, APS president elect, to talk about controlling and managing contractors in construction.

Raymond Bone is a Yorkshire region committee member. He will be setting out the requirements for clients when engaging a contractor for construction work at, or on, a building/site.
