2017 SAINT IGNATIUS GAME NOTES #58MILESTOCANTON 3

Wildcats Storylines ...PLAYOFF EXCELLENCE: The Saint Ignatius football team has a long history of playoff success under Head Coach Chuck Kyle ‘69. The Wildcats are making their 28th appearance in the OHSAA Division I Playoffs, including their second in a row and six in seven seasons. Under Kyle, the Wildcats have a 70-16 overall record against playoff foes.

TOP CATS: Following a tough loss to Archbishop Moeller, the Wildcats turned it around. The Wildcats downed the No. 1 ranked team in the state, St. Xavier and St. Edward, in back-to-back weeks. The 9-1 Wildcats were rewarded on Monday with the 2017 Division I AP Poll Championships. Voters from around the state selected the Wildcats as the top team for the ninth time. The Wildcats last garnered the honor in 2009. In five of the eight previous AP poll champion seasons, the Wildcats have won the Division I State Championship.

BO & JACK KNOWS FOOTBALL: With injuries at the running back position, Jahadge “Bo” Floyd has stepped forward as the lead back. The 5’9”, 160-pound speedster notched 289 yards and 2 touchdowns against St. Xavier and St. Edward, guiding the Wildcats to back-to-back wins. On the season, Floyd has a team-best 752 yards, 6.1 yards per carry, and 6 touchdowns. Floyd combines outside speed with the toughness needed to grind out extra yards in the middle. Sophomore Jack Welcsh also deserves kudos for developing as a change-of-pace and blocking back when Floyd needs a breather. Welcsh notched 26 yards on 6 carries last week, showing off determination and toughness. Look for the 5’10”, 172-pound sophomore to keep contributing on offense.

DAN THE MAN: Senior quarterback Dan Alexander continues to perform well under center as the Wild-cats’ starter. Alexander threw for 112 yards against a stout St. Edward defense, completing a critical 43-yard throw to Nigel Drummond II in the final minutes of last Saturday’s win. Alexander also punched the ball in from the 2-yard line, showing off the power of the Wildcats’ quarterback sneak play. On the season, Alexander has passed 847 yards and 10 touchdowns through the air, along with 222 yards and 6 touch-downs on the ground, making him an effective dual-threat for the Wildcats. Alexander will play a big role for the Wildcats early on, as the squad hopes to build an early lead to negate Perry’s dangerous Wing-T offense.

MONSTERS OF THE MIDDLE: The #1 strength of the Saint Ignatius defense might be its hard-hitting line-backer corps. Logan Joyce and Tommy Eichenerg terrorize opponents off the edge in both the run and pass game, while middle linebacker Andrew Keirn threatens opposing running backs. Joyce and Eichen-erg led the team in tackling against the Eagles. Joyce notched 7 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, and 1 fumble recovery, while Eichenberg tabbed 7.5 tackles, 0.5 sacks, and 0.5 tackles for loss. Joyce and Eichenberg will play a critical role against Massillon Perry’s offense, looking to stop the outside run and push the ballcarrier inside. Don’t discount Tommy Grosel or Colin Burns, either, as each might see time on Saturday.

BIG MEN UPFRONT: The defensive line graduated plenty of seniors before the 2017 season, but the Wildcats have reloaded. Led by 5’9”, 210-pound Aidan Gill, a nose tackle convert from fullback, the Wild-cats won’t always overpower you, but can slide past you and wreak havoc. Defensive ends Zachary Mc-Mahan, Aidan Wells, and Brad Andrich rotate frequently, keeping the Wildcats fresh and rested up front. Opponents have notched just 3.2 yards per rush against the Wildcats this season, averaging less than 100 yards per game. Opposing quarterbacks often have to scramble to elude the Wildcats, as the team’s ends provide pressure. Look for Darian Kinnard, a 6’7”, 330-pound linemen, to rotate in at defensive tackle on big plays. Kinnard is a monster inside and tough for opponents to block due to his sheer size and willpow-er. Kinnard plays a critical role on offense, protecting Alexander’s blindside. Big guards Jack Jamieson and Juan Pen push open holes for the run, paving the way by pulling from one side to the other. Don’t forget right tackle Billy Corte and the big-hearted Jivan Meguerditchian at center.

Learning about Massillon Perry...FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Friday’s matchup marks the first time that Saint Ignatius and Massillon Perry have met on the gridiron. Against other Massillon squads, the Football Cats have a 13-1 record – 12-1 vs. Massillon Washington and 1-0 vs. Massillon Jackson. The lone win over the Polar Bears occurred in the first round of the playoffs last season.

WING-T WIZARDS: The Massillon Perry Panthers run a peculiar offense, at least for 2017 – the Wing-T. The clas-sic offense operates on deception, with each play setting up another. Most of the plays out of the Wing-T appear the same for the first few steps, causing confusion for opposing defenses. The Panthers are quite content with grinding out long drives and consuming large portions of the clock. Perry has three running backs with over 500 yards – Jarin Curtis (1,292), Richard Coleman (819), and Max Baker (693). Perry will likely work all three into the ground game on Friday. The Panthers have 3,237 rushing yards and 40 touchdowns on the ground, averaging 7.0 yards per carry as a team.

PESKY PASSING: While the Panthers prefer to ground it out with the running game, Perry does occasionally pass the ball to keep opponents on their toes. Perry’s quarterback, Max Baker, has completed 44-of-90 passes for 576 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions. The Wildcats must be wary of cheating forward and avoid being sucked in by the playaction.

4-4 FRENZY: The Panthers run a base 4-4 scheme on defense, which specializes in stuffing the run game. With origins in the 1940s, the 4-4 defense is just as classic and ef-fective as the Wing-T offense. The Panthers’ 4-4 defense has surrendered just 628 yards on the ground, or 2.3 yards per carry. The scheme works just as effectively in the passing game, as the Panthers have allowed 8 passing touchdowns while intercepting 11 passes. Opponents complete less than 60% of their passes.

DISCIPLINE ON D: A key component of the Perry defense is its disciplined players devoted to stuffing their gaps. The Panthers do not often blitz, preferring a more methodical approach based on reading the offense and reacting to its movements. The Panthers feature sure tacklers.

COVER 3: As Saint Ignatius offensive coordinator Nick Restifo said this week, the Panthers often employ a 3-deep scheme. The Cover 3 typically sends its two cornerbacks deep, along with the free safety, with each covering a third of the field. The scheme relies on linebackers and the strong safety to stop the flats and the short routes.

WR MICHAEL DROBNICK ‘18

S JOHN WETULA ‘19Due to injuries in the secondary, John Wetula has been called into action. The junior, a 110m hurdle sprinter for the Track Cats, brings speed to the second-ary. Wetula notched 7 tackles against St. Edward, tied for second among Saint Ignatius defenders. The junior’s tackling ability will certainly come into play against a dan-gerous Perry ground game.

BY THE NUMBERS/WILDCAT WATCH

The Wildcats’ passing attack will come into play against Perry’s stout defense. Michael Drobnick has proved to be a reliable under-neath option for QB Dan Alexander. Drob-nick caught two passes against the Eagles, and has 13 catches for 200 yards and 2 TD on the season. Look for Drobnick to catch some passes for the Cats on Friday night.

2017 SAINT IGNATIUS GAME NOTES 10

EDDIE DWYER’S PREVIEWOHIO CITY -  The kickoff on Ridge Road and Day Drive will be 7:30 pm, as

Hall of Fame Head Coach Chuck Kyle ‘69 will lead his state and nationally ac-claimed program into its 28th OHSAA playoff appearance since its impres-sive postseason run began in 1988.

Along with their 11 State Championships, the Wildcats have achieved three National Titles (1989, 1993 and 1995), a National Runner-Up (2008), two State Runner-Up Finishes (1996 and 2016) and a record of 70-16 in the OHSAA playoffs.

Saint Ignatius was the Division I State Runner-Up to Cincinnati St. Xavier last season and the Perry Panthers finished as the Division II State Runner-Up to Cincinnati La Salle in both 2015 and 2016.

The Panthers of highly respected Head Coach Keith Wakefield will be making their ninth OHSAA playoff appearance and are 14-8 overall in post-season play. Perry moved up to Division I this season under the OHSAA’s new Competitive Balance system.

Here is a corner’s view of the storied Federal League’s Panthers, who feature an offense you don’t see very often in today’s brand of football - the Wing-T.

“It’s hard to practice that,” said Coach Kyle of the Wing-T. “Perry runs it with such precision that to gear up in practice for what our players are going to see is very difficult.

“They have three backs that are averaging plenty of yards per carry,” Coach Kyle said of Panthers tailback Jarin Curtis (nearly 1,300 yards rushing and 22 touchdowns), fullback Richard Coleman (820 yards and 11 touch-downs rushing ) and quarterback/safety Max Baker (694 yards and four TDs rushing). “It’s no secret that they want to control the football. They’re happy with those steady drives going down the field, while your offense sits on the bench and watches.

“Perry will also handoff to the slot or the wing with misdirection,” contin-ued the man who has guided his alma mater to a record of 343-86-1 in what is now his 35th season as the head of the football program at Cleveland’s Jesuit Preparatory School. “It’s (the Wing-T) a challenge, the kids have to read their keys and not over penetrate and create a seam. Because the way they run their offense, if you create a seam, their backs are going to go right in there for a nice gain.”

Coach Kyle also cautioned that if the ‘Cats get too geared up for the run, Perry, which has big-game experience along its offensive line, will come with play action.

Although Coach Wakefield and his staff will be the first to tell you that they don’t throw much, Coach Kyle said the Panthers will employ a pass as “kind of a changeup that can hit for a big play.”

In its 24-7, regular-season finale victory over GlenOak, Perry totaled 423 yards rushing and limited the Golden Eagles to 36 yards on the ground.

Coach Kyle looks at Friday night’s matchup as a good challenge for the ‘Cats’ defense, which was outstanding in both a 28-14 victory over defend-ing big-school state champion St. Xavier on October 21st at Byers Field and last Saturday’s 17-10 triumph over rival St. Edward in a packed Lakewood Stadium.

St. Xavier was dethroned from the top ranking in the Associated Press Division I State Poll with the loss to Saint Ignatius and the following week, St. Edward, which took over the top spot in Ohio from St. Xavier, surrender it to the Wildcats. Saint Ignatius won its ninth AP Division I State Poll under Coach Kyle in Monday’s final voting for 2017 by a statewide panel of sports writers and broadcasters.

The Eagles of St. Edward (9-1), the Bombers of St. Xavier (9-1) and the Mentor Cardinals (9-1), whose only setback was to the Wildcats in Week 2 at the Cardinals’ Jerome T. Osborne Sr. Stadium, were ranked third, fourth and sixth, respectively, in Monday’s final Division I AP poll. Along with its AP poll title, Saint Ignatius earned the top seeding for the Region 1 playoffs and the No. 1 ranking in Cleveland.com’s final Top 25, seven-county area poll for 2017.

“When you get to the playoffs, all the gears shift,” said Coach Kyle. “Our region is really tough. All eight of the teams are capable of going to the next level. These are the types of practices we have to have to challenge ourselves.”

PERRY’S CASE FOR ITS DEFENSE: “Their defense, I would say if they blitz, they blitz for a reason,” Coach Kyle said. “They’re not just selling out trying to blow you up. They calculate what you’re doing. Their approach de-

By Eddie Dwyer fensively is to be very sound in what you do. They believe in it and they will find a way to make a play. Technically, they’re very good. They anchor well and close the seams, and their secondary has some sound skilled kids that can run with you. The play a 4-4 front, and when you have four linebackers you can get to the hole quickly. We have to come with our A game and see how they adjust to some of the things we do.”

The main anchor for Coach Wakefield’s defense is senior end Zach Blackiston, a first-team All-Ohio selection in 2016. Blackiston is a quick and athletic penetrator. Zach leads a Perry defense that welcomed back eight starters from last season.

COACH RESTIFO ON PERRY’S DEFENSE: “From what I have seen they are tough and strong kids, they’re not going to let anything get over their heads because they drop off really well,” said Wildcats’ veteran Offensive Coordinator Nick Restifo, a man who has produced 16 quarterbacks at Saint Ignatius who have received All-Ohio recognition. “They play a three-deep zone. They’re solid and they’ll try not to get out flanked. They stay balanced as much as they can.”

AIR PALLOTTA: The one team that definitely attacked Perry with its strengths was Massillon Jackson at Jackson in Week 4.

The Polar Bears’ gifted quarterback Jaret Pallotta fired four touchdown passes and one of his talented receivers, Brandon O’Quinn, totaled 249 receiving yards as Jackson handed Perry its only setback, 38-7. Pallotta, a UMass recruit, passed for 389 yards on 26 completions.

Jackson also did a solid job defensively, limiting the Panthers’ Wing-T of-fense to 151 yards on 36 rushing attempts. Perry earned its playoff spot by running off six consecutive victories after the setback to Jackson.

The 8-2 Jackson Polar Bears will travel to 8-2 Euclid on Friday night for the other Regional Quarterfinal in Saint Ignatius’ bracket. Last season, the Wildcats defeated Jackson, 35-0, in a Regional Quarterfinal on Byers Field.

ST. EDWARD RECAP

LAKEWOOD - In handing the Eagles their first loss of the season, Saint Ignatius clinched the No. 1 seed in Division I, Region 1 for the OHSAA Foot-ball Playoffs, which begin on Friday night (November 3rd).

The 9-1 Wildcats, who for the second consecutive week defeated Ohio’s top-ranked Division I team by the Associated Press, 9-1 St. Xavier on Octo-ber 21st and now 9-1 St. Edward, will be making an OHSAA-best 28th playoff appearance on Friday night. Saint Ignatius carries an outstanding postsea-son record of 70-16.

If the latest ratings by computer playoff guru Joe Eitel hold up, it appears the record 11-time state champion Football ‘Cats will host eighth-seeded Massillon Perry (9-1) in a Regional Quarterfinal Friday night at 7:30 on Byers Field in Parma’s Robert M. Boulton Stadium.

Under the OHSAA Harbin Playoff Format, the top eight teams in each of the state’s regions after last night’s final regular season games will qualify for the Regional Quarterfinal Playoffs and the top four are awarded a home game.

Keep in mind that the official OHSAA final computer ratings and first-round playoff matchups are scheduled to be announced today (Sunday). However, there is a Monday night game, yes Monday night, involving a Florida team (Broward) that could determine whether or not Cincinnati Elder makes the playoffs in Region 4.

Saint Ignatius, which entered Saturday night’s 56th matchup with St. Ed-ward as Ohio’s second-ranked Division I program by the AP, leads its all-time gridiron series with the Eagles, 31-24-1. The Wildcats have now defeated the Eagles three consecutives times, including last year’s regular season and OHSAA Regional Final playoff triumphs.

Barring an upset in the Region 1 playoffs, Saint Ignatius and second-seed-ed St. Edward could meet for a second time again this season. The Wildcats are 3-0 versus the Eagles in the OHSAA postseason, having also eliminated St. Edward from postseason play in 2008 (in the first round) and 2011 (in the second round).

On what was a brisk, but perfect football weather Saturday night in Lake-wood Stadium, Hall of Fame Head Coach Chuck Kyle’s Wildcats showed the 8,632 who packed “The Madhouse on Madison” why they should be crowned the AP poll champions when the final poll is released by a panel of sports writers and broadcasters on Monday evening.

With the respective defenses imposing their will in the early going, the Wildcats rode their special teams to a 7-0 lead with 7 minutes and 15 sec-onds remaining in the first quarter.

Senior Matthew Trickett, one of the premier kickers/punters in the entire Midwest, got off a booming punt deep into St. Edward territory that the Eagles’ return man fumbled. Wildcats sophomore running back/linebacker Jack Welcsh, a name to remember my friends, pounced on the loose football at the St. Edward 8-yard line and two plays later standout junior tailback Ja-hadge “Bo” Floyd scored from 6 yards out. Trickett’s extra-point kick capped Floyd’s effort.

After driving nearly the length of the field, Saint Ignatius capped an 18-play drive with a 24-yard field goal by Trickett and it was a 10-0 game with 9:24 left in the first half.

Thanks to the efforts of a Wildcats defense fueled by its outstanding out-side or edge linebackers, senior Logan Joyce and junior Tommy Eichenberg, and secondary mainstays, senor corner Cam Toppin and junior safety Danny Scelza, it remained a 10-0 game entering the halftime break.

Toppin came up with his sixth interception on the season and Scelza made an athletic pick along the St. Edward sideline with 1:24 to go in the first half after the Eagles advanced to the Wildcats’ 27-yard line.

The story defensively for Saint Ignatius was definitely Joyce, as Logan was a disruptive force from start to finish. He finished with 10 tackles and a key fumble recovery, and his partner on the other side, Eichenberg, had five solo tackles, seven assists and a key sack. Along with his interception, Scelza had six solo tackles and three assists. Promising junior safety/wide receiver John Wetula was in on eight tackles, including five solos.

“It helps having Tommy (Eichenberg) on the other side, he’s a great player, as you know,” said Joyce after he received the Most Valuable Player medal and trophy from the Great American Rivalry Series, which is pre-sented by the United States Marine Corps. The Wildcats-Eagles rivalry has traditionally been part of the series and the ‘Cats’ were also awarded Satur-

By Eddie Dwyer day night with the Great American Rivalry Series Championship Trophy. “Our whole defense just came together tonight,” Joyce continued. “We

were putting pressure on their quarterbacks (senior Zach Kincaid and junior Garrett Dzuro) and our DBs (defensive backs) were doing their job in the back. We were ready. A very good team St Eds, we’ll see them again (this season).”

St. Edward, which was ranked among the best of the best Nationally and in the Midwest this past week by USA Today, unleashed some of those credentials in the second half, especially the fourth quarter.

The Eagles got on the scoreboard off a 32-yard field goal by senior Blaine Stencil with 11:50 remaining to be played and, after recovering an en-suing onside kick at midfield, Coach Tom Lombardo’s Eagles tied the score on an eight-play drive that was capped by a 4-yard touchdown run by pow-erful senior tailback Ty Rice and the ensuing PAT by Stencil. Rice and the Wildcats’ man in the middle up front defensively, senior nose tackle Aidan Gill, were grade-school teammates at Our Lady of Angels in West Park.

It was, however, a night that belonged to the Wildcats, many of whom who don’t recall those early state-championship days when Saint Ignatius’ home field was none other than Lakewood Stadium. Coach Kyle’s ‘Cats were almost unbeatable on Bunts Road and Madison Avenue.

After being shaken up in a previous series, senior quarterback Danny Alexander went back under center after Saint Ignatius’ defense forced the Eagles to again punt from deep in their territory.

Taking the reins at the St. Edward 45, Alexander led a four-play drive that featured a 43-yard, picture-perfect pass and catch combination down the middle to junior wide receiver Nigel Drummond II and Danny’s 2-yard, game winning touchdown keeper that was followed by another extra point by Trickett with 1:13 left on the fourth-quarter clock.

St. Edward’s final possession began at its 20-yard line after Trickett sent another kickoff deep into the end zone and, after some outstanding pressure from Joyce and junior lineman Zach McMahan resulted in a tipped pass, the Eagles’ night ended on an incomplete pass with just 23 seconds remaining.

“I’ve never lost to them and I wasn’t going to let it start,” said Danny of the success on all three levels (Freshmen, Junior Varsity and now Varsity) that his class (Class of 2018) has experienced against St. Edward. “This game gets everybody fired up. You bring something to it that you didn’t know you had. You play above your ability sometimes. If you have a little pain it goes away, because you know you have to do what is best for your team.

“An excellent team,” Danny continued in reference to St. Edward. “They have some phenomenal players. Hats off to them. They gave us a great game that was hard fought and came down to the last minute. We have some improvement to do, but we’ll be ready when we meet them again.”

“A BEAUTIFUL CALL”: That is what this old gridiron grinder wrote in my well-seasoned notebook after Saint Ignatius’ outstanding Offensive Coordi-nator Nick Restifo slowed down St. Edward’s momentum with a screen pass from Danny Alexander to Jahadge “Bo” Floyd off a third down-and-13 yards to go from the Saint Ignatius 33-yard line. “Bo” caught the high pass that had to be thrown over a charging defensive lineman and ran for a first down at the Eagles’ 47.

FROM COACH KYLE: “They have been cornerstones on our defense,” Coach Kyle said of the 1-2 punch of Joyce and Eichenberg. “We play great team defense and tip your hat to the defensive line. We’re not the biggest guys, but we fill our gaps and have good technique.

“Tommy Eichenberg and Logan Joyce, they make plays,” Coach Kyle continued. “They can run, they can cover.”

Coach Kyle also referred to Coach Restifo’s “great call” and credited St. Edward for executing the onside kick when it did. “I didn’t think they were going to call it then. I thought they would kick us deep down the field.”

CONGRATULATIONS FROM THIS CORNER: Go out to Wildcats outstand-ing senior center Jivan Meguerditchian, who prior to Saturday night’s open-ing kickoff received a Student Athlete Scholarship Award from the United States Marine Corps as part of the Great American Rivalry Series. Jivan plans to attend Case Western Reserve University and study Engineering.

AND MORE CONGRATULATIONS GO OUT TO FORMER WILDCAT MAINSTAY TIM FITZPATRICK: On Saturday night, Tim was recognized by the Great American Rivalry Series for his exceptional all-around efforts in Saint Ignatius’ 14-5 victory over St. Edward in 1986. That game marked the ‘Cats’ first victory over the Eagles since 1979, although there was a 14-14 tie in 1983. Tim is the brother of Saint Ignatius’ outstanding Athletics Director Rory Fitzpatrick ‘88.

2017 marks the 90th season that football has been played on this location; now known as Byers Field atRobert M. Boulton Stadium. In 1921, the cities of Parma and Parma Heights opened the first high school for their residents on a site just outside the east bleachers. Seven years later, the apple orchard and grass field located behind the new school was converted into the athletic field with the gridiron laid out in a north-south alignment, just as it is today. Recently, renovations have been completed on the facility. In the last decade, a new lighting system was in-stalled; bleacher improvements (including the installa-tion of handrails) were completed along with renova-tions to the lockerrooms, restrooms and concession areas. Other improvements include the installation of a video board at the north end of the stadium - it is one of the largest video boards in use at a high school facil-ity the state. The pressbox, which has been upgraded in the past five seasons with a new working media area and new windows, seats 30 journalists and broadcasters. New field turf was installed for the 2012 season. In the last two seasons, the stadium has also had handi-cap seating added to both sets of grandstands, includ-ing 46 wheelchair and companion seats on the home side of the stadium. The Parma City Schools invested nearly $1.2 million into the facilty during the summer of 2014, including a new parking lot on the south end of the Stadium and the full replacement of the parking lot on the east side of the stadium, under the Press Box.

On September 17, 1920, seven men, including the legendary Jim Thorpe met in Canton, Ohio to form the American Professional Football Association (APFA), a precursor to today’s National Football League. An early hotbed of football, Canton was selected

as the site of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which opened its doors on September 7, 1963. Before the Hall of Fame came into existence, Faw-

cett Stadium was erected in 1938. The facility housed the successful McKinley Bulldogs. After the Hall of Fame was built in Fawcett’s back-

yard, the stadium hosted the Hall of Fame Game be-ginning in 1962. The first two Hall of Fame enshrine-ments took place in Fawcett Stadium, too.For a period of time in the 1990’s and 2000’s, Faw-

cett Stadium hosted the OHSAA’s Division I State Championship games. Saint Ignatius football fans be-came well-acquainted during this time, as the Wild-cats played six state title games at Fawcett Stadium. The Wildcats’ third state title in 1991 was played at

Fawcett, as the Football Cats defeated Centerville,

24-21. The Wildcats also won titles in 1992, 1999, 2001, 2008, and 2011 in front of adoring Wildcats fans in the historical stadium.During years in which the Wildcats played at

Fawcett, the football program adopted the phrase 58 Miles to Fawcett. The team’s 2017 hashtag plays off that theme. The stadium was renamed Tom Benson Hall of

Fame Stadium after its most recent renovation, completed in August 2017. So, the Wildcats retired the phrase 58 Miles to Fawcett. With the return of the OHSAA State Champion-

ship to Canton, the theme #58MilesToCanton has been adopted. The theme will be used on social media, apparel, and other items. After falling short of a state title in 2016, the Wildcats will look to retun to Canton in 2017 and claim the program’s state record 12th state title.
