Success stories of Sericulture Farmers in Andhra Pradesh State

SPINNING MONEY THROUGH SERICULTURE – A CASE STUDY / SUCCESS

STORY

Mrs. P. Vijaya Lakshmi, Khajipuram village, Bestavaripeta Mandal, Prakasam

District, Andhra Pradesh is one such mulberry farmer who conquered herfinancial crisis and improved her family situation with will and courage.

Famine period pushed her family into debts and they struggled to afford forbasic investments in crops. But being the backbone of her family, she never letherself and her family down during any kind of hardship and continuouslyinspired them towards better work and better future.

During these tough times support from sericulture department to cultivatemulberry showed them a ray of hope and transformed their struggles intounbelievable profits. The farmer could immensely improve her family'sfinancial and social status.

She states that knowing nuances in crop management is vital for highproductivity and constant monitoring from sericulture departmentrepresentatives highly improves their work efficiency. She has become a rolemodel to other farmers and moreover to many families.

She believes the following steps to be stepping stones of success.

She started sericulture with 2 acres of mulberry and now extended it to 5 acres after realizing its true potential in productivity. At present she is earning around Rs. 1,00,000/- per month.

1. Improving soil fertility using neem cake, micro nutrients & F Y M

2. Perfect disinfection

3. Rearing only in Chawki rearing centres

4. Discussing with fellow farmers

5. Attending CPP meetings regularly

6. Proper planning in farm management and silk worm rearing.

Now many farmers from her area are fervent towards mulberry cultivation and this endorses the saying that success is never final, failure is never fatal and courage is what counts and thus showing that woman's role is immense in not only the success of a person but also for society.
