welcome to the guide!

Hello Friends, Welcome to the magazine which has made its home in the beautiful state of Maine for 26 years. Though we’ve lived here for over 30 years, we would like to tell you how happy we are that you are spending time with us. You will find Maine’s people among the friendliest anywhere, the scenery pristine, and the opportunities for enjoying nature and the great outdoors endless. We are sure that you will find while traveling from Kittery to Fort Kent and across all the roads less travelled that Maine truly is the way life should be.

Inside these pages you will find a multitude of advertisements. Please read them carefully, each and every one is important. They are the presentations of good people who live and work here. They have something of value to offer you, and they sincerely want the opportunity to meet and serve you. They are our friends and we hope they will become your friends as well ... Enjoy!

PHOTOCONTEST

Regional Activities Guide

If you are a visitor or you live in Maine, and you have great activity photos that depict a Maine summer ... send us your images! If chosen, we’ll print your photo in our next Summer 2010 issue, and maybe even use it on the front cover! Email your entries along with a little about where it was taken to: [email protected]. Include your name, hometown and phone number.

Suggestions of outdoor adventure shots where people are having fun are: festivals, water sports, parades, hiking, kayaking, wildlife, competitions or anything that shows how we have fun in Maine with a creative flair. Contest winners will also receive gift certificates from some of our advertisers. Please limit entries to two images please and good luck!

Our winner: Betsy Tietz of Tucson, Arizona. Portland Head Light Park, July 2008. “The setting was serene and the waves were soothing. We enjoyed our lunch and were treated to be able to see talented artists interpreting the Maine coast,” said Tietz.

portlandPortland Discovery Land & Sea Tours has been offering tours of Portland for over 12 years. As a locally owned and operated company, they take pride in showing visitors all that Maine’s largest city has to offer. Whether you’re looking for a city tour, harbor cruise or both, Portland Discovery has it covered! The most popular tour Portland Discovery offers is the Land & Sea Tour. This combo tour is a great way to maximize your day in Portland. For just $33, you’ll get a 90-minute Trolley Tour and a 90-minute Lighthouse Lovers Cruise on Casco Bay. The 2009 season begins May 9th and will continue right through the end of October. In July & August trolley tours run at 9:30, 11:15, 1:00, 2:45 and 4:30. Harbor cruises are offered at 11:30, 1:30, 3:30 and 6:30. Tours will operate daily through October 25th, however the schedule does change a bit after Labor Day. Though not required, reservations are strongly recommended in-season. For those looking for a true “Maine adventure” a trip to Eagle Island may be the answer. This adventure includes a narrated cruise through beautiful Casco Bay, plus an opportunity to explore Eagle Island. While en route to the island, you’ll cruise through scenic back channels and quiet coves, past island cottages and quaint fishing villages. On the island you will have an opportunity to tour the former summer estate of famed arctic explorer, Admiral Robert E. Peary, the 1st man to reach the North Pole.

Visitors find it difficult to imagine among the rolling hills and rambling brooks at the end of Desert Road there is a desert. Once you take your first step through the gift shop’s front door, however, your doubts will vanish as you enter the vast

and sandy Desert of Maine. The owners welcome you to a very unusual experience and they will do everything they can to make your visit a pleasant and informative one. In 1797 the Tuttle family moved to the 300 acre farm that once covered the Desert of Maine where they successfully raised crops of potatoes and hay for several years. Failure to rotate crops thereafter, combined with massive land—clearing and overgrazing resulted in severe soil erosion that exposed this hidden desert. As the spreading sand grew uncontrollable, the Tuttles surrendered, leaving the desert to it’s destiny.

Looking for wildlife? Visit the Maine Wildlife Park on Route 26 in Gray, just 3.5 miles from Maine Turnpike Exit 63. Owned and operated by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, this is a guaranteed opportunity to see a moose; plus white-tailed deer, black bears, bald eagles, mountain lions, porcupines, coyotes, hawks, owls, turtles, trophy trout, and more—over 30 species of native wildlife! The wildlife at the park have been injured, orphaned, or are too dependant on humans to be released back into the wild, so act as educational ambassadors to visitors that want to learn more about them. The park is a shady and cool spot to visit in the summer under massive white pine trees. Fall is also a great time to visit: the crowds have thinned out, the wildlife are growing in their winter coats and antlers, and the foliage is lovely. There are nature trails and wildlife gardens to enjoy, a game warden museum, interactive exhibits and displays, a ‘snack shack’, a nature gift shop and more! The park-like setting, exhibits and gardens make this an inviting stop. Bring a picnic and spend the day! No reservations required.

Poland Mining Camps Foremost among Maine’s many collectible minerals and gemstones are elbaite tourmaline, the heliodor and aquamarine varieties of beryl several types of garnet, the amethyst and smoky varieties of quartz, lepidolite, and purple fluorapatite. All these minerals can be collected in the numerous quarries that are scattered throughout one of the largest concentrations of granite pegmatites in the United States. Although Maine’s pegmatites attract hundreds of rockhounds each year, collecting minerals is not always an easy matter. With few exceptions, the pegmatites are privately owned and posted against trespassing. And while these quarries contain an abundance of specimens, recognizing the subtle forms and colors that separate them from the huge volumes of dump rock can be difficult. Finally, many quarries have been inactive for decades, meaning that no recent drilling and blasting has been done to expose new material. Rockhounds planning to collect in Maine’s pegmatites—especially out-of-state visitors with no local ties—need all the help they can get. They can get it from Mary Groves and her staff at Poland Mining Camps. A complete guiding service for pegmatite-mineral collectors, Poland Mining Camps provides lodging, meals, access to 15 privately-owned quarries, experienced guides, the right to keep all specimens that are found, and the opportunity to meet prominent local collectors and geologists. Poland Mining Camps is located in southern Maine in the little town of Poland, about 10 road miles west of the cities of Lewiston and Auburn. This it near the center of Maine’s pegmatite belt, a northwest-southeast-trending concentration of granite pegmatites that extends from the New Hampshire line west of Rangeley to the coastal town of Boothbay Harbor, nearly 100 miles to the southeast.

naplesThe Heart of Maine’s Sebago Lake/Long Lake Region

Located midway between the coastal city of Portland and the White Mountains of New Hampshire, Naples is easily reached from any direction. Route 302 is the primary route through Naples. There are many seasonal and year-round businesses, along with numerous lodging facilities and camping areas. Thanks to its unsurpassed location, Naples is a popular

summer resort and year-round vacation area—as well as a rapidly growing residential and business community. Visitors naturally come to a stop when they arrive at the Naples Causeway in the center of town; the view up Long Lake to the White Mountains is one of the most spectacular in New England.

Discover the area that Downeast Magazine called “fun and funky”, with a “pleasantly retro charm”. Located in the center of the Lakes Region of Southwestern Maine on Route 302, Bridgton is just an hour from coastal Portland, two and a half hours from Boston, and only six hours from New York City! The area features over 70 lakes and great ponds within 15 miles of downtown Bridgton. Perfect for a quiet canoe ride, or rent a pontoon boat and take a sunset picnic cruise. Want to get in some fishing? The Bridgton area has bass, trout, perch, pike, and landlocked salmon just waiting for you. Looking for a golfing holiday? There are several excellent 18-hole courses, including the beautiful Bridgton Highlands Country Club! There are also hiking trails, mountains to climb, riding stables, and plenty of sites to see for those who don’t golf. The breathtaking views and relaxing side roads take you through some of autumn’s most beautiful colors. Bridgton is the beginning of the foothills of the famous White Mountain National Forest, and people from all over the world come to visit during the fall season. In addition, Northern New England’s largest agricultural fair takes place in neighboring Fryeburg. During your visit, stay at one of the numerous lodging places that the area offers. From private cabins and cottages to well-equipped campgrounds, from affordable lakeside resorts to one-of-a-kind bed and breakfasts, your stay will be one to remember. “The guests that stay with us can’t believe how close they are to so many attractions,” says Woody Woodward, owner of the Highland Lake Resort. “Within an hour they can be walking along an ocean beach, visiting a world-class art museum, riding a train up Mt. Washington, or taking a whale watching cruise.” Of course, with on-site amenities such as its own private swimming beach, a tennis court, free boats, canoes and kayaks, plus a game room and fitness center, many guests find plenty to do right at the Highland Lake Resort. “We have guests come back year after year, often with other friends and relatives joining them, to take advantage of all that the Bridgton area offers,” says Woodward. Those looking to do a bit of shopping will find dozens of antiques stores in the area, and a springtime visit lets you get a jump on the best items before the summer tourists arrive. There are also art galleries, craft stores, thrift shops, and gift boutiques. Owner Mark Grenda of the Corn Shop Trading Company in Bridgton has seen a wide variety of shoppers over the years. “My shop, of course, has a little bit of everything,” says Grenda. “From Maine-made products, to cards and gift items, to novelty signs, to a wide variety of jams, jellies, and jewelry,

Welcome to the Greater Bridgton Lakes Region

to Native American crafts and even antiques, we have just about something for everyone.” He also notes that frugal shoppers enjoy the area because there are several stores geared toward discount and second-hand items as well as higher-end boutiques that offer seasonal specials. Bridgton is also a service center for the western part of Maine. It’s amazing to see the growth that has sprung up in the last decade, including a new elementary school, state-of-the-art hospital, supermarket, national coffee chain, and the rebuilding of the 4-screen Magic Lantern movie theatre and pub, plus the nearly-completed 45-acre in-town park along Stevens Brook. At the same time, Bridgton has kept its “back to the past” feel, without strict zoning laws and ordinances.People who have always lived there, or who have chosen to move there, work hard to keep the heart and soul of the town intact. Come to Bridgton, and “discover the essence of small-town New England.”

Fryeburg is nestled in the valley of the Saco River about an hour west of Portland and next door to the famous Mount Washington Valley with its many shopping outlets. There are lots of opportunities to buy farm products right at the source or rent a canoe for a leisure paddle on the river or on one of the numerous nearby lakes and ponds. Fair time usually coincides with foliage season, which makes a great time for a scenic mountain drive or a short climb up Jockey Cap, the famous local boulder. Fryeburg is also home to the famous private Fryeburg Academy that serves boarding students from around the world as well as the public high school for seven nearby towns in Maine and one in nearby New Hampshire. Daniel Webster was an early headmaster at the Academy. Fryeburg was the first town settled in what is now Oxford County and came about as a result of a grant of land to one Colonel Joseph Frye in 1763. In 1725, there was a famous battle between Captain Lovewell’s small army of men and local Indians. A monument commemorating that battle can still be viewed at the northwest end of the local lake names Lovewell. The Fryeburg Fair’s first run was in 1851 as an annual exhibition of the West Oxford Agricultural Society. The Society was authorized by an act of the Maine legislature. It includes the towns of Baldwin, Bridgton, Brownfield, Cornish, Denmark, Fryeburg, Harrison, Hiram, Lovell, Otisfield, Standish, Stoneham, Stow and Sweden (in Maine), as well as the towns of Bartlett, Chatham, Conway, Eaton, Freedom and Jackson (in N.H.).

Along with whitewater rafting, outfitters provide a variety of adventure trips including whitewater, lake and inflatable kayak trips, canoeing, rock climbing, guided hikes, moose, bird and wildlife watching, voyageur (12 person) canoe trips, ATV tours, overnight wilderness camping trips, ropes courses, paintball, hunting, fishing, sky-diving and snowmobiling in winter. Who can raft? Anyone who enjoys the outdoors and is looking for adventure can raft. You need not be a fitness fanatic or an Olympic Athlete. Maine rafts typically hold an eight person crew and a guide. To protect the environmental quality of Maine’s rivers, the State limits the number of rafters each day. What is included? Outfitters provide transportation to and from their base facility to the rivers, life preservers, helmets and paddles, a pre-trip orientation and safety meeting, a ride down the river and a hearty, open grill meal. Most outfitters provide a slide or video show of your trip down the river at an “après-trip” party at base camp.

Augusta is one of America’s most beautiful capital cities. Encompassing both sides of the Kennebec River, Augusta is the center of employment, trade and services for central Maine and is the seat of state and county government. The Augusta Civic Center is one of the finest in the Northeast. It can handle 8,500 people for a concert or sports event. The University of Maine at Augusta is located next to the Civic Center complex. This fine institution offers an outstanding opportunity for residents to continue their education. Recreational opportunities are readily available with golf courses, tennis courts, and parks. Fresh water beaches are just minutes away, and the coast less than an hour’s drive. Don’t miss the Great Kennebec River Whatever Family Festival! It’s a Chamber-sponsored family festival and a day at Capitol Park featuring kids’ games, sport tournaments, carnival, fireworks and more. Begun in 1979, the Whatever Family Festival commemorates the cleanup of the Kennebec River and celebrates “the return of the river to the people.” Call 623-4559 for more information. From June through August you can see performances at the Theater at Monmouth, 933-2952; Gaslight Theater, Hallowell, 622-7031; and Johnson Hall, Gardiner, 582-7144.

MY CREEDby Margaret Chase Smith

“My creed is that public service must be more than doing a job efficiently and honestly. It must be a complete dedication to the people and to the nation with full recognition that every human being is entitled to courtesy and consideration, that constructive criticism is not only to be expected, but sought; that smears are not only to be expected, but fought; that honor is to be earned, but not bought.”

Farther north along Coastal Route 1 is the rich, seafaring town of Bath ... fondly called the “City of Ships,” as it has been a shipbuilding community for centuries. Since 1889, Bath Iron Works has been building and maintaining ships for the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard. Bath’s 19th century restored business district, with its brick sidewalks and old-fashioned streetlights make shopping in the many fine shops and galleries a very special event. The downtown section serves as the home of the world famous Shelter Institute as well as the site of the popular Center of the Arts at the Chocolate Church. Dining and lodging in historic Bath is perfect for those seeking to experience authentic life along the Kennebec at a pace of yesteryear. The National

Trust cited Bath as “an old seafaring town that has reinvented itself as one of the best small cities in America.” Bath’s tree-lined streets are an outdoor gallery of humble and grand examples of classic American architecture. With it’s 19th century brick storefronts and narrow streets, Bath has become a magnet for shoppers, in part through a successful Main Street program. The expansive Historic District offers guided tours of carefully preserved homes and year-round performances in the 1846 Gothic Revival landmark that houses the Chocolate Arts Center. The ocean can be enjoyed at nearby Reid State Park, a rugged and scenic beach, and at Popham Beach, a glorious five-mile stretch of white sand, rated one of the most beautiful beaches in New England. In addition, there is sailing, golfing, water-skiing, boating or just unwinding on the veranda of a romantic inn after a long day of sampling Bath’s may pleasures. Events to look for, before or after dining in one of Bath’s great restaurants are: tall ship visits to Maine Maritime Museum, historic house tours to celebrate the anniversary of the Chocolate Church Art Center, a fishing tournament, celebrity golf tournament, cook-offs and parades. Known as the “prettiest village in Maine,” Wiscasset was settled in 1663 on the banks of the Sheepscot River. Due to its deep harbor, Wiscasset was once the largest working harbor east of Boston as a bustling shipbuilding center and lumber port. Today, the harbor is home to local fishermen and recreational boaters and the final resting place since 1932 for the four-masted schooners the Hesper and the Luther Little, whose remains are currently being salvaged. Visitors to Wiscasset can stroll the pleasant brick sidewalks and find many antique shops, art galleries, fine stores and restaurants. Other attractions include handsome sea captains’ homes, the Powder House (1812), the Lincoln County Courthouse (1824), Castle Tucker (1807), the old Lincoln County Jail (1809), and the

Customs House (1870). If you didn’t get to see Wiscasset Village’s wonderful sunken garden opposite the Nickels-Sortwell House—take an extra few minutes and enjoy it’s beauty. Local industry includes water-based industry such as lobstering and worm digging. The historic integrity of its townscape earned Wiscasset the honor of being placed on the National Register of Historic Places (1973).

There’s a warm welcome waiting for you ... A truly quaint and beautiful Maine village, Damariscotta is the gateway to the Pemaquid/Bristol peninsula. The area is rich in history; the town’s first recorded deed is dated 1625. In the spring, alewives gather to spawn at the Damariscotta waterfalls. Damariscotta serves as the shopping and financial center for surrounding communities, and is the site of many fine homes. It’s attractive Main Street boasts numerous stores, shops and restaurants. The Chapman-Hall House, built in 1754, features an herb garden and rose bushes dating back to the 18th century. Along the edge of the Damariscotta River are some three acres of oyster shells, left in great mounds by Indians during the countless ancient summers. Artifacts have been found among the shells to substantiate the theory that this was a popular spot for many different Maine Indian tribes through the centuries. Some of the shell heaps run as deep as 30 feet. The river continued to play a vital role over the years. It has supported many industries, including fisheries, lumbering, brickyards and a large number of shipyards. In the mid-1800’s, the shipyards in Damariscotta, Newcastle and Nobleboro are said to have built more clipper ships than any other locale in Maine. At the end of the 19th century, summer communities were established at Christmas Cove, Heron Island and Boothbay. These became the foundation for the areas thriving hospitality industry. Eight towns and villages share the watershed and are linked by a common history. The Damariscotta River was formed more than 10,000 years ago. Twice a day since then, millions of gallons of seawater have surged through the

Fort Island Narrows on every change of tide. What is unique to most of us who live and work in this region is the convenience and availability of everything from our local hospital, the YMCA and Lincoln Academy to the “personal service” of our many fine shops.

Wildlife abounds along the shore of the Damariscotta River and overhead, majestic pines and oaks border the high and rocky bluffs. Salt marshes change their colors with tide and season. The landscape has changed over the years, but there are many places to experience the quiet, natural beauty of this great river. Archeological finds and ancient shell heaps (middens) testify that Native Americans camped, fished and hunted here at least 5,000 years ago. The name “Damariscotta” is derived from the Native American word meaning “place for an abundance of alewives,” is a testimony to the significance of the annual migration in this area since prehistoric times. Many visitors and locals enjoy observing the annual alewife run each spring and a visit to the Alewive Fish ladder in Damariscotta Mills. From the sparkling ocean bays, to the pristine lakes and tidal rivers; the natural landscape in the Damariscotta Region offers unrivaled opportunities for all. Nature and sporting enthusiasts, seafarers, or those simply wishing to rejuvenate in quieter surroundings, this very special corner of Maine’s mid-coast welcomes you, your family and friends. Learn about our history through the Colonial Pemaquid Restoration, originally a stopping place for European fisherman and fur traders in the 17th century, and a recreated Fort Henry. Stroll our scenic villages and cozy harbors, browse enticing shops and galleries, savor a variety of dining choices and nestle into one of the many inviting accommodations. Go on a seal or whale watch or a puffin trip. Some of our charter cruise boats even offer a “lobstering adventure.” Hike the nature trail at Dodge Point Preserve, River Road, New Castle or the Salt Bay Heritage Farm, Belvedere Road, Damariscotta or the Audubon Nature Walk, Hockamok Trail, Bremen. Visit the Rachel Carson Salt Pond in Chamberlain. The popular Pemaquid Lighthouse, subject of our state’s new quarter, and the Fisherman’s Museum are always “must sees” on visitor’s lists. Try something new, off your beaten path and experience all the Damariscotta Region has to offer.

A true vacation awaits you!

Although more and more people travel to Maine throughout the years, Waldoboro continues to maintain a quiet and unhurried ambience even when coastal Route 1 is bumper to bumper traffic. Here in Waldoboro, in the

Medomak River Valley, agriculture and the sea meet as the Medomak opens into Broad Bay and then the many-islanded and beautiful Muscongas Bay. To the mind’s eye, a good place to visit ... and live. Bremen, Maine, population 690, is located in the midcoast region, between Waldoboro and Damariscotta, on the eastern shore of the Pemaquid peninsula. The principal commercial activities of the town have traditionally been marine-related: fishing, clamming and boatbuilding. But the scenic beauty increasingly appeals to artists, craftspeople and others who seek a quiet, unspoiled place of great natural beauty in which to live and work.

If you enjoy cooking, The Well Tempered Kitchen is for you! The kitchen & dining supply store sells everything to cook with, from fine German cutlery to baking utensils and cookware. Broad Cove Marina Services, a fully-operational marina, is located approximately 7 miles from Round Pond, Waldoboro and Damariscotta. Come visit with us and take in the scenic view from our enlarged deck as you enjoy fresh seafood cooked especially for you.

unionThe town of Union is situated in the heart of Knox County, less than half an hour’s drive from the Maine coast at Thomaston, Rockland or Camden. Nestled between the ridges of one of the oldest mountain ranges of the American continent. Union is among the prettiest towns in Maine and has become a bedroom community for Augusta, Rockland, Camden and the surrounding seaside areas. Its rolling wooded hills and picturesque farmland dotted with five glacial lakes remind travellers of the Lake Region in England. Lakeside camping attracts satisfied vacationers year after year.

thomaston • so. thomaston

The town that went to sea ... The St. George River dominates the life and vistas of Thomaston and its two neighboring peninsulas, Cushing and St. George. Some of America’s finest sailing ships were built here. Many residents still make their living by boatbuilding, fishing, lobstering and clamming. Thomaston is a thriving town with pleasant shops, restaurants and a fascinating harbor (with a public boat-launching ramp). One of the finest 4th of July celebrations can be found here. A parade, chicken barbecue and spectacular fireworks...and much more! If fresh, live lobster is what you’re after, visit Ralph & Loretta Dean at BBF (Branchbrook Farm) and Waterman’s Beach Lobster. For a dining experience to remember, a stop at Harbor View Restaurant is a must.

You must visit Spruce Head where the St. George River borders one side of the peninsula and the Atlantic Ocean borders the other. Also, where a profusion of artists have discovered the beauty of the peninsula’s villages and where granite used in fine buildings all over the country was quarried. The Spruce Head area is a fishing and lobstering community offering beauty and coastal scenery.

Owl’s Head is the coastal suburb of the city of Rockland. It has long been a summer resort village with many vacation cottages and lovely year-round homes. The coastal scenery is superb and was noted by explorer Samuel de Champlain when he landed here in 1605. The community is convenient to many of the best mid-coast attractions and has two major ones of it’s own: Owl’s Head Transportation Museum and Owl’s Head Light. On Vinalhaven, North Haven or Islesboro, you’ll find shops, restaurants, museums and lots of landscape to see and photograph. FERRY SCHEDULE

Throughout the summer, the scenic splendor of a variety of pleasure craft and lobster boats enhances the activity of the city’s harbor. Its harbor is well protected by a breakwater, which is just under 1 mile long. This is a nice walk, on a good day. Take a picnic lunch and a fishing pole and catch a fish or two on the coming tide. State-run ferries make regular trips to two islands in Penobscot Bay (Vinalhaven and North Haven). Rockland’s waterfront park hosts the Maine Lobster Festival (60th year). Moving up from the harbor is a beautiful Main Street business area and several modern shopping malls. The Farnsworth Library and Art Museum features 18th, 19th, and 20th century American canvasses and a substantial collection of Andrew Wyeth’s work. Many fine waterfront restaurants offer fresh serving’s of the daily local catch. Shorefront accommodations, with close-up views of the harbor, are available at competitive rates.

From Main Street to shorefront shopping centers, Rockland offers a strong appeal to visitors. Intermixed is a wealth of cultural activities, art galleries, nationally famous museums and interesting sites. Penobscot Bay’s largest islands are a short ferry ride away. Take your car, your bike, or just your feet and a picnic lunch. On Vinalhaven, North Haven and Islesboro, you’ll find shops, restaurants, museums, and lots of landscape to see and photograph. As the center of mid-coast Maine and the gateway to the Penobscot, Rockland harbor services are among the very best along the entire coast. Drafts at mean low water are from 10’ to 50’. The Port of Rockland is active with fishing, cargo and island ferry traffic. The 18’ main channel allows room for heavy traffic and short turn around time. There is a permanent Coast Guard base located on the harbor.

Rockport is a quiet, picturesque village and a gathering place for artists and musicians. The small town’s offerings include the Bay Chamber Concerts and the Center for Maine Contemporary Art. Rockport’s deep harbor is naturally sheltered from the open ocean providing a safe port for pleasure vessels. Aside from their splendid natural offerings of sea, mountains, lakes and woodlands, the three-town community of Rockport, Camden and Lincolnville is culturally one of the most varied and exciting in Maine.

Centrally located between Camden and Bar Harbor, it is within easy reach of both Bangor and Augusta. It is here that Route 1 traverses the bay, affording the visitor breathtaking views of the Maine coastline. Congratulations on 20 years of great downeast family dining Ruth & Wimpy’s has become a family dining icon in downeast Maine. Their reputation for serving great food makes it the number one dining choice for locals and brings summer visitors back to the area year after year. Congratulations on making a downeast dining experience so special!

acadia & downeastThis region includes the spectacular Acadia National Park, one of the most visited national parks in America. Washington County where the sun first rises on continental United States and Campobello Island, N.B. located across the International Bridge from Lubec, Maine made famous for being the summer home of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and St. Stephen, N.B. across the Ste. Croix River from its sister U.S. city Calais, Maine. Acadia National Park includes more than 40,000 acres, mostly on Mount Desert Island. The remainder of the park is located at Schoodic Point near Winter Harbor on the mainland and several islands, including the Isle au Haut. The park offers great trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Fishing and kayaking are a few other activities one can enjoy in this natural wonderland. For many, Washington County is thought of as Continental America’s last frontier. Here you can escape by yourself and hike a salt- sprayed beach at West Quoddy Head State Park or forest trail in Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge or at hundreds of other pristine areas throughout the Sunrise County and never meet another soul. Washington County is large by New England standards. From Steuben in the southwest to Danforth in the northeast the land area is larger than the states of Delaware and Rhode Island combined. The total population of 32,000 live in the County’s 44 towns and two cities.

Making summer treats and holiday traditions special For more than a half a century the Hanscom’s have been harvesting wild blueberries from their barrens. In mid-August, both locals and visitors alike flock to the Hanscom Ridge Road, Marshfield, facility to treat themselves to a great downeast summer tradition. In addition to their summer blueberry treats, they pioneered the development of balsam fir holiday products in downeast Maine. Christmas trees, wreaths, garlands, centerpieces and other specialty holiday creations are among the natural Maine products that the Hanscoms have shipped to brighten the holiday seasons of thousands of families across America. Early November sees the beginning of the process of harvesting the finest tip ends of the balsam fir branches. The freezing nights in downeast Maine at this time of year are the perfect ingredient to slow down sap flow, allowing the needles to form a strong bond with the branches. Next comes the creative process. In the midst of the glorious fragrance of the newly cut balsam fir, creative artists at Flo’s Wreaths put their talents into the development of each holiday product. Their special storage methods assure that the fresh smell of the Maine woods lasts for months. During November and early December, they ship their creative holiday products daily to thousands of retail customers across the country.

The Wharf The last full-time, working sardine factory that had been housed in an historic 100-year-old building with a large wharf on Johnson Bay in Lubec, Maine was not on the Trafford’s list of purchases. They had recently sold their Florida business and wanted a new life adventure as they planned for their early retirement and after a carefree trip to downeast Maine, decided that Lubec was the spot they would retire and make their new life. They saw great potential in the vacant sardine factory and after much thought and counsel purchased the facility. Their goal was to return the facility with its wharf to a working waterfront business. Summer 2009 will launch the fruition of this goal. An oceanfront lifestyle and lodging at The Wharf ’s beautifully furnished apartments and suites are now available. The suites share a larger unit with kitchen, dining areas, sitting areas and laundry. Each suit has a private bath and cozy living rooms with wonderful ocean views. The apartments have two bedrooms and baths as well as a living room, dining room and den with a balcony overlooking the ocean.

eastportEastport’s Old Stone Mustard Mill Museum Raye’s Mustard Mill is a working museum located on Washington Street in Eastport (America’s eastern-most city), approximately eight miles down Route 190 from its intersection with Route 1 in Perry. The quaint and authentic mill is North America’s only working traditional stone ground mustard mill. At the turn of the 20th century, J. Wesley Raye started the mill to produce mustard for Maine’s burgeoning sardine industry. In the early 1900s, the small city of Eastport had more than 20 sardine canneries. Later in the century, when the sardine industry declined, Raye’s Mustard Mill became known for its award-winning gourmet and specialty mustards. This downeast institution has remained in the Raye family for over a century. Currently owned by Kevin and Karen Raye, this family run business remains committed to continuing the traditions of previous generations while focusing on expanding its national presence in the marketplace. The Rayes and their staff welcome tours of the mill, which also features The Pantry Store, a full-service gift shop featuring Maine crafted foods and gifts, as well as take-out.

The past is alive and well in Eastport In 1818, when America was a young nation, led by its 5th President, James Monroe, Samuel B. Wadsworth, a Portland native and the son of Revolutionary War General Peleg Wadsworth saw an opportunity to launch a ship chandler business in the busy port city of Eastport. At the time both the whaling and shipbuilding industries were booming. His entrepreneurship was exactly perfect for the time and he knew that he could meet all his customers needs by supplying hardware, harpoons, deadeyes, canvas, alcohol, and tobacco and everything else required for rigging, operating and provisioning a ship. While the original business site suffered through several fires and storms the Groundhog Day Gale of 1976 completely devastated the facility. True to its family heritage, the fifth generation of the Wadsworth family gathered up what remained of the business after the storm and moved to its present location at 42 Water Street in the center of Eastport’s downtown Historic Center.

Park celebrates 45th Anniversary On January 22, 1964, the Roosevelt International Park was established by agreement signed by Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson and U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson. On August 20, 1964, the First Ladies of the two countries opened the only international park in the world as a unique memorial to the close relationship between the people of the two nations. Both governments wished to honor the role that Franklin Delano Roosevelt had played in their mutual histories, as well as the special relationship that FDR had with his beloved island. While the summer home of the late president remains the centerpiece of the park, beautiful gardens and 2,800 acres of natural beauty complete with scenic vistas, hiking and driving trails provide additional visitor experiences. Back by popular demand are complimentary outside walking tours of the estate and on-site presentations of seashore and bog ecology (staff and weather permitting). The Roosevelt cottage opens on the Saturday following Victoria Day (Sat. prior to Memorial Day) through Canadian Thanksgiving (U.S. Columbus Day) 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. ADT. The park’s visitor center will remain open through October 31 to accommodate fall visitors. The visitors center offers interpretive displays, a short introductory video and a selection of memorabilia items.

Ten years after it first opened in June of 1999, the Chocolate Museum has unveiled its brand new $875,000 Chocolate Discovery Centre, a dream brought to fruition over the past three years. This “rediscovery” of chocolate features many new exhibits including , for the first time , on-site, live production of Ganong’s exclusive hand-dipped and handcrafted chocolates! Visitors can now watch the skilled workers demonstrating their age-old talent of coating chocolates by hand as well as observe them packing the chocolates in boxes. An extremely creative, 3-D, trompe-l’oel exhibit will also be available for viewing. The Chocolate Discovery Centre answers everything you ever wanted to know about chocolate. Visitors are invited through interactive games and quizzes to test their knowledge

of where chocolates come from, how it is made and where it journeys by ship before landing at production sites around the world. In addition, you will be able to test your skill at “packing the chocolate box;” watch videos about different types of candymaking and the Ganong family; and investigate the wonderful colorful exhibits on chicken bones and jelly beans. You will also be able to enjoy the Museum’s ten-year time-tested exhibits as well as enjoy lots of chocolate treats. The Centre beautifully tells the 136-year story of candymaking and of the Ganong company and its contribution to the town of St. Stephen, N.B. The Museum is a non-profit organization that is co-owned by the Town of St. Stephen and Ganong Bros. Limited and is governed by a volunteer Operating Committee (Board of Directors).

The Queen City of Maine As early as the 1500s, when David Ingram sailed up the Penobscot River explorers believed the region was extraordinary. Some thought that the area was possibly the lost City of Gold—Norumbega. Samuel de Champlain attempted to find the gold but settled for a lucrative fur trade with the Indians. The city’s name dates to February 25, 1791 when the General Court of Massachusetts ( Maine was then a part of Massachusetts) approved “Bangor” for incorporation. Lumber was king in Bangor during the city’s early history. River drivers brought logs harvested in Maine’s woods down the Penobscot River to the many mills that banked Bangor’s waterfront. By the late 1800s, Bangor was the busiest seaport on the East Coast shipping finished lumber to Europe and other parts of the United States. Bangor has been home to many national luminaries including President Abraham Lincoln’s, vice president Hannibal Hamlin, as well as such contemporaries as author Stephen King and Pulitzer Prize-wining playwright Owen Davis. Along with its many cultural attractions, Bangor has great accommodations and dining and is the perfect vacation destination as it is a great starting point for day trips to Bar Harbor and Way Down East as well as to the Katahdin area and Moosehead Lake.

A Maine Sporting Camp Tradition For 90 Years For a decade short of a century, Maynard’s In Maine has provided their guests with outstanding wilderness experiences in addition to excellent bungalow style cabin accommodations and great dining with wholesome fresh farm foods prepared to perfection. The Moosehead area offers outstanding landlocked salmon, trout and togue fishing. This year, Billy Maynard landed a 29.67 pound togue on Moosehead Lake measuring 41” long. His huge catch beats the old Moosehead Lake record set in 1961 of a 28 pound, 12 ounce togue. The area’s large, pristine forests provide excellent cover for deer, bear and small game and make it an outstanding hunting region. Here guests at Maynard’s will find a real pearl in the North Woods.
