Universities: Engines for regional growth

• Foundation for new venture creation in addition to their traditional role as research and teaching institutions

• New names for this kind of entrepreneurship– academic entrepreneurship (Powers and

McDougall, 2004)– faculty entrepreneurship (Chrisman, Hynes and

Fraser, 1995). • Spin off their research as new firms• Foundation of the entrepreneurial university -

> broad spectrum of entrepreneurship courses

Problems• Most universities lack resources and

competencies for entrepreneurship teaching– Organizational inertia (teaching job-taking)– Students do not see themselves as ent.

• Main competence of the university is still teaching and accumulating knowledge

• No comprehensive set of entrepreneurship courses (specialized courses)

A solution• In regions with densely located universities,

collective educational efforts can have positive coordination effects– Satisfying the needs of a large volume of students

with diverse backgrounds– Enhance the supply of entrepreneurship courses– Each university can specialize and students have a

large supply• Collaboration - swap : 1)students & 2) faculty• An organization that coordinates and develops

the skills among faculty and need among students

A knives edge• Theoretical and conceptual understanding without any relation to practice• Practical understanding from a single setting• Can the two be combined ?

• How could it be done?

Teaching practices• Knowledge of right and wrong

• Better to remember, select and apply among tools and models• Knowledge creation in practical settings for learning

• Social context for learning• In the class room and out in the ”real world”• Anticipation: involvement of practice = high students involvement

• ”In” and ”about” practice
