As you will see from this report, this past year has been exciting
, challenging and innovative.
The Angel Foundation for Learning is evolving and modernizing
its systems to keep up with
the growing demands of our programs and the communities we
serve.
With a focus on broadening awareness, creating new fundraisin
g opportunities and
streamlining the financial operation of the Student Nutrition Pr
ograms, 2018 brought new
excitement and fresh branding to The Angel Foundation for Lea
rning (AFL). Here are some of
the highlights.
• A complete overhaul of the website was undertaken after co
nducting surveys and
researching best practices for charities our size. The new website
is eye-catching,
interactive and with the addition of e-commerce, visitors can n
ow sign up for Cents
Off, purchase Special Occasion and Christmas cards, register an
d buy tickets for
the Evening to Feed the Soul Gala, the Ride to Feed the Soul, an
d the Charity Golf
Tournament right on-line!
• Fundamental communication pieces —postcard, PowerPoint
, ambassador package,
Cents Off program material, banners and certificates were redesi
gned with crisp and
eye-catching branding.
• An Evening to Feed the Soul, Angel Brigade Week, Civvies D
ay and The Ride to
Feed the Soul event materials were also given a fresh new appea
rance to attract new
audiences and create a sense of fun. We also introduced a new e
vent, the Curiosities
Art Show, thanks to a generous donation of original art works.
• The Student Nutrition Financial reporting form was redesign
ed to reflect the Toronto
Catholic District School Board’s (TCDSB) new KEV on-line sch
ool banking. Many
training sessions were held throughout the year to instruct scho
ols on the use of this
new form and the use of KEV for parent donations to student nu
trition.
The rejuvenation of communication elements and
events have added a new sense of recognition and buzz
around the AFL and we’re looking forward to using this
momentum to better tell our story and invite the Toronto
Catholic Community to join us to make sure every
TCDSB student has everything they need to succeed!
Thank you to the corporate partners, private donors,
volunteers, the TCDSB, the AFL Board of Directors, the
AFL staff and all of you who support us throughout the
year.

Students who have had a healthy and nutritious breakfast or morning meal are ready to learn and have improved attention spans. This is just one of the benefits of the Student Nutrition Programs (SNPs) in TCDSB schools. In the 2017-18 school year, 58,227 TCDSB students benefitted from a healthy breakfast, morning meal, lunch or snack daily. There were 187 Student Nutrition Programs operating in 167 locations.
Municipal and provincial government grants in the amount of $5,117,802 cover approximately 24 per cent of the costs associated with running the SNPs. Schools raise the remaining funds through local fundraising initiatives, parent donations and community donations.
Some Student Nutrition Programs also receive grants from other organizations: Breakfast Clubs of Canada; the Grocery Foundation and President’s Choice Children’s Charity. The Angel Foundation also receives donations that are directed to Student Nutrition Programs from: TCDSB; The Youth and Education Fund; The Polish Orphans Charity; Dr. David Michelberger; CWL of St. Philip Neri; RTO District 24 and the Cardinal’s Dinner.

Guardian Angel Funds
Thanks to our fundraising events and the generosity of our donors, The Angel Foundation for Learning offered seven funds within the Guardian Angel wing of support to assist TCDSB students who had emergency needs that were beyond their family’s means. We believe that all students should have access to warm clothing, food, shelter, medical supplies and other necessities of life. We distributed a total of $147,606.87 in 2017-18.
Each year the SWEF expenses exceed our budgeted amount. The budget for this fund was increased in 2017-18 to $75,000. The SWEF is funded mostly from our fundraising activities, several donors (The Youth and Education Fund - $3,000; Martin McCarthy - $6,000; TD Securities- $10,000) and directed donations. A total of $88,096.11 was distributed to students and families from the following schools.

Sadly sometimes families find themselves in extreme needs due to circumstances beyond their control. During 2017-18, the AFL Extreme Needs fund supported several TCDSB students and their families in the face of dire financial crises. We are very grateful to the Tom Leon Foundation and to De La Salle College that donated to this fund. We distributed $7,780.28 to students from the following schools.

All students should have the ability to develop their artistic talents regardless of the family’s ability to pay for lessons or materials. This fund is possible due to a generous bequest to The Angel Foundation for Learning from Bob Wilson, a former TCDSB employee. TCDSB students demonstrating artistic ability in Visual Arts, Music, Drama or Dance can apply for up to $500 to pursue their area of interest. In 2017-18, $4,459.50 was distributed to 23 students from the following schools.
