Choi Xoo Angshowsustherealismofthehumanemotionfrozeninaninstant.TheflowoflifethroughpolymerclayfiguresbreathesthedifficultrealitywefacetodayifMandoesnotconfronttheouterworld.Choipersonifieswhathefeelsinsidecanalizedbyeveryemotioninamultidimensionalway.Heworksthroughthewholebodyorapart,focusingontheintensityofsensationashecrystallizeslifefilledwithsomuchseverityanddarkness.HisartisticintuitionsuggeststhatManhidesbehindhisbodybutthatthesoulissopowerfulthatskinspeaksalanguageofitsown,howlingwhenithurtsandplayfulwhenpeaceful.However,whencontinuouslyfightingagainstsocietyand theburdenofexistence, thequintessenceofnumbedfleshdieseven though thebloodflowsandtheheartstillbeats.

Chu Teh-Chun’spoetic landscapes lieat thegatewayofhisown fantasies.Travelling in the imaginary,Churidesthedepthofhisinteriorsymphony,limitless.Theconstraintsofhiscross-culturalinfluenceareabolishedwithanon-perspectivelimitationdrivenbyintuition.ThebreathtakingviewsofhisendlesspromenadethroughChinaandkeylocationsbroughtaboutthedialoguebetweenartandnature.InfluencedbyNicolasdeStaël,Chuexploresanabstractstyle.His techniqueandgenerousstrokesevokethesubtletyofartasauniversallanguage in lyricabstraction.Thecanvasesarefilledwithachoiceofoilpaints,watercoloursaswellascal-ligraphysearchinganddiscoveringthepervadingtruthofthevision.TheperspectivesareinfiniteinasynthesisofChinesephilosophyandWesterntradition,combiningaswellassuperimposingthefourelements;air,water,earthandfire.

ChuTeh-Chunwasborn in1920 inBaitouZhen, JiangsuProvince,China.Hegraduated from theNationalAcademyCollegeofArt,Hangzhou,directedbyLinFengmianin1942.Chuwasinvitedtobeaprofessor inboththeCentralUniversityofNankingandTaiwanUniversitybeforemovingtoParis in1955. In1956here-ceivedtheSilverMedalattheSalonofFrenchArtists.In2001hewasgrantedChevalierdel’OrdredesPalmesAcadémiques and Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur. Feng Shuoexploresthecomplexitiesofhumannaturewiththemagicofallegory.Imaginationintertwinedwithworldtruthistheartist’sfigurativeartisticbalance.Theannihilationofmorals,theextinctionofprinciplesandthedestructionof freedomfeedFeng’s lonely inspiration.Striving toabolishpowerandcorruptiononearth,multiplemythsareused inamockingmanner. Immersingfromthecanvas,symbolicanimalsand individualsareportrayedinstrangesituations,suchas;afoxwearingboots,atoadsigningacontractinabowtie,aguiltyfallenangel;allrepresentingthehumanconditionbutalsothecontinuumoflifeinagreedy,moneyhungryenvi-ronment.Intheidealpsyche,mankindwillliveinharmonywithnature,inthecatharticconstructionofultimateself-awareness.

FengShuowasborninBeijingin1970.Hegraduatedin1994fromtheCentralAcademyofFineArts,(CAFA),Beijingandin2003fromtheCentralAcademyofDramawithamaster’sdegree.HeiscurrentlyteachingattheCentralAcademyofDramaintheStageDesignDepartment,andisaworkingassociateprofessorandtutorformasterstudents.Theartist’sgroupandsoloexhibitions include:MarlboroughGallery,NewYork;CentralAcademyofFineArtsGallery,BeijingandHanmoArtGallery,Beijingtonameafew.TheartistlivesandworksinBeijing,China.

Li Tianbing exploresfictionandrealityhauntedbyselectedchildhoodmemoriesinasuffocatingsocietyandchargedpoliticalsetting.Usingphotographsasamediumtoillustratehisreflectionsonthepastandhismul-ticulturalexperiences,Lilayersthepresentusingoilpaintinginatimelessduality.ReflectionsonlonelinessareaddressedinasymbolicfashionacrossLi’sart,sufferinginstilledbythesinglechildpolicy.Thisstateofconfu-sionengulfstheartistandhelosesthefrontierbetweenhisownauthenticityandinvention.Theinterpretationofhiswork incorporatespersonal identityanddramainatalewiththe infiltrationofmulticultural factors.HiscompositioninterweavesthecontrastingthemesofChinatoday:EastandWest,communismandcapitalism,ancientcultureandmodernconsumerism.

M Shanthamani explorestheaftermathoftransitionandtransformationthroughculturalimpacts.Asgrowingmaterialismcreatesalossofvalues,theartistremindsusthathappinessdoesnotcostathing.Sheshowsusthatlifeisremovedfromexistence,thespiritualisforgotten,cultureislost,traditionsarehistory,andeverythingisreducedtoa label ‘madesomewhere’.Shanthamaniusesfragmentation inallmediumsandsymbolisminordertohelpmanrecognizeandunderstandwhatischanging,thatweareatthelaststagebeforeashes.Heruseofcharcoalrepresentsthedepletionofournaturalresourcesandthedestructionofindustrialdevelopment.Shanthamani’ssculpturesarerusticcharcoalbrickscombinedasanallegoryonthepassageofexistenceinasensualfigure.Shanthamani’sworksareintrospectionsontheinnerconsciousnessasitmutateswithtimeandslowlybecomesapileofpiecesburnedbythecombustionoflife.

Jagannath Pandaconductsthroughoppositionalfundamentalsastudyofco-existence.Asystemofsymbol-ismsillustratesthemanifestationofwhatishappeningtodayflowingwiththepast.Pandausestheevidentdu-alitiesoflife:natureandculture,theurbanandtherural,traditionandinnovation,thefigurativeandtheabstract.Thissubtletyintheartist’sworkusesanimalsforpeopleinourgrowingurbanenvironment.Theambiguityofhisownculturefusedwiththisworldofco-habitation,isreflectedinhisthemespertainingtoecologyanddevelop-ment,natureandtechnology.Panda’srealismbelievesintheexistenceoffantasy,inthisancientandmoderntimewhich isseen inhiscolours;white,redandblack‘Sattva’,goodnessandhappiness;‘Rajaher’passionandmovement;and‘Tamas’:darknessandignorance.Pandaoftenusesbrocadetextileasanartisticsignaturewhilehisworkstagesaconjugationwithrealityinamultidimensionalmessagetoourearth.

Qiu Jie,thesolitaryartistwhocallshimself“themanwhocomesfromothermountains”grewupinChinabeforemovingtoSwitzerlandin1989.AsachildduringtheCulturalRevolution,heproducedpropagandadrawingsforthelocalnewspaperinaprovincenearShanghai.HisintricateautobiographicalworkcombinestherealismofreferencestoboththeChineseandWesterncultures.Qiu isscarredbythepolitical indoctrinationthatheunderwentinChina.However,heusesderisiontocounterbalancetherevolutionaryfictioninhisart.QiuJie’sstylecouldbedescribedas ‘politicalpop’;his imageryconfronts thehistoryofChinesesocietywith thatofcontemporaryWesternpopularculture.

Lochan Upadhyay is tornbetween tradition andglobalization; he is a child ofmodern India today; fromasmallvillagewithanancestraltwistallthewaytothemobilityofthe‘nobody’inthehustleandbustleofthebigcity.Inhabitedbyculturalritualsinruralsocieties,urbandevelopmentandrisingpollutionwithendlesswasteproducts,Upadhyaymixesalltheseelementsinaplayfulmanner,celebratinglifeamidstlegendsforallscalesof society. Influencedbyvariousmediums inhisaestheticquest,healsousespiecesof sari fabric thataregivenbyallthevillagewomenforhislargeweddingchairs,thewholeenergycreatingthepowerofcloth.Likeasymbolicdowry,thewife’sfamilyhastopaythefuturehusband;thisritualoftenruinstheentirecommunity,resultingintherepressionoffemalesataveryyoungage.Theartistraisestheseoldtraditionalquestionsandtheirremaininginfluencewhileonabroaderscale,theworldisoverpoweredbymaterialismandtheinstinctofconsumptioninametaphoricalmanner.

Fabienne Verdierusesspace tocapture the intrinsic forcesof life inaperfectstroke. It isacompletedia-loguethroughthechosenspiritualelementstranscendingtothematerialworldthatdriveshercreations.Thecosmicpowerofexistenceisexpandedthroughherart inaphilosophicalmanneratagiveninstant,beyondboundaries.Verdierworksverticallyusinggravitationalforcesastoolstoenhancethetransmissionofthematterthroughmovement,capturedintoamoment’stimeintheessenceofequilibrium.Paintingwithanimalbrushessuchashorsehairorroosterfeathers,herinstrumentsfunnelenergyontotheworkfromtheirownlivingspirit.Thecanvasarena isoccupiedby incandescentcolors thatbring theartistback toherwesternsparkleandblack,totheultimatepower:“thecolorbywhichallismaterialized”.TenyearsinChinaworkingwithmastersintraditionalinkpaintingandalifetimeofinspirationthroughtheiconsofarthistory,haveledtheartist’sinnateEast-Westspirittobedrivenbythequestofonenesswiththeuniverse.

Born inParis in1962,Verdiergraduated fromtheEcoledesBeaux-ArtsofToulouse in1983whilestudyingChinese at the Institut des Langues et Civilisation Orientales in Paris.
