2018 REFRESH CAMPAIGN TEMPLE KOL AMI 15030 N. 64th Street Scottsdale, AZ 85254 480-951-9660 tkaoffi[email protected] TEMPLE KOL AMI Once, there was a chicken and a salmon who were best of friends. One day they were taking a walk together—well, not exactly a walk, since the salmon was swimming in the stream and the chicken was walking on the shore—when they came upon a restaurant. A sign in front of the restaurant announced that they were having a special on lox and eggs. The chicken turned to the fish and said, “Why don’t we stop in for a bite to eat?” The salmon answered, “No thanks. From you they want a donation. From me they’re asking total commitment.” Jewish fundraisers don’t ask—they tell you what you should give. In fact, that is the only thing two Jews can agree about: what the third should give to tzedakah! In the Torah, we read about Israel’s ancient system of taxation. Each year during the month of Adar (technically the end of the year), the kohanim would collect a poll tax from every Israelite of drafting age. Two things stand out about this practice. First, each per- son was required to give only a half-shekel, not a whole shekel. And second, every male, without exception, had to participate. The Torah says, “The rich shall not pay more, nor should the poor pay less.” A half-shekel is a relatively small amount of money. What happened if one couldn’t afford to pay? The wealthy person was not allowed to pay the tax for the needy person. Howev- er, the Talmud suggests that the wealthy patron could extend a loan or even give a gift to the needy person, and the needy person could then pay. In this way a poor person maintained his dignity and participated in this system of taxation on his own. I believe that the point of the half-shekel was twofold. It taught the people that every per- son had an obligation to maintain the community. There were no exceptions; if you were of draft age you had to pay. But by requiring only a half-shekel, the Torah teaches us that no one is required to do the “whole job.” If we all give a bit—the metaphoric half-shekel— then the needs of the community will be met. We learn that in order to build and refresh a community, it takes that one “half-shekel” at a time. We all have a job to do and a responsibility to meet. Even if there was someone who could afford to bankroll the entire congregation (it should only happen here), this would not necessarily be a good thing. The shared responsibility and participation of ev- ery individual is as important as the actual giving. The half-shekel was a way of teaching that the bottom line was not as important as the shared endeavor. There’s another lesson to be learned from the half-shekel. It is a powerful symbol of in- clusion. Giving the half-shekel is not just my responsibility; it is my right. No one should be left out. As a congregation, we’re not asking for a total commitment; only a half-shekel. And with each ‘half’ we grow stronger and stronger… So instead of saying, “Give until it hurts,” maybe our motto is, “Your gift makes a differ- ence.” Each of us has something unique to contribute. Together we can refresh our com- munity. Everyone has something to give. YOU can change our TKA world. Todah Rabah, Rabbi Schneider

In the Torah, we read about Israel’s ancient system of taxation. Each year during the month of Adar (technically the end of the year), the kohanim would collect a poll tax from every Israelite of drafting age. Two things stand out about this practice. First, each per-son was required to give only a half-shekel, not a whole shekel. And second, every male, without exception, had to participate. The Torah says, “The rich shall not pay more, nor should the poor pay less.”

A half-shekel is a relatively small amount of money. What happened if one couldn’t afford to pay? The wealthy person was not allowed to pay the tax for the needy person. Howev-er, the Talmud suggests that the wealthy patron could extend a loan or even give a gift to the needy person, and the needy person could then pay. In this way a poor person maintained his dignity and participated in this system of taxation on his own.

I believe that the point of the half-shekel was twofold. It taught the people that every per-son had an obligation to maintain the community. There were no exceptions; if you were of draft age you had to pay. But by requiring only a half-shekel, the Torah teaches us that no one is required to do the “whole job.” If we all give a bit—the metaphoric half-shekel—then the needs of the community will be met.

We learn that in order to build and refresh a community, it takes that one “half-shekel” at a time. We all have a job to do and a responsibility to meet. Even if there was someone who could afford to bankroll the entire congregation (it should only happen here), this would not necessarily be a good thing. As a congregation, we’re not asking for a total commitment; only a half-shekel. And with each ‘half’ we grow stronger and stronger…

So instead of saying, “Give until it hurts,” maybe our motto is, “Your gift makes a differ-ence.” Each of us has something unique to contribute. Together we can refresh our com-munity. Everyone has something to give. YOU can change our TKA world.

2018 REFRESH CAMPAIGNTemple Kol Ami is committed to teaching our children to “Do Jewish” in this world. Our children are our legacy and we want their learning environment to reflect the joy and vitality of our congregation.

Twenty-five years ago, we built an Early Childhood Center using the modern industrial look of the time. Due to cost constraints, we had a strong physical framework for each classroom but inside each room was another story. There was no consis-tent storage or equipment that would enable our teachers to do their jobs in the best learning environment. Twenty five years later, our 27 early childhood teachers and our 20 volunteer Religious school teachers make miracles hap-pen for our children each day by doing the best they can do to create an environment that fosters achievement in crowded and old-fashioned classroom spaces.

Since the original buildings were constructed, the Early Childhood Center has grown by more than 50%. We now have more than 100 children registered. In addition, our re-ligious school (now at 230 children) use the same classrooms for learning each Sunday. We do not have the proper storage equipment to share the space between preschool and religious school. We do not have enough workspace in the classrooms to en-able our older religious school students to engage properly.

At the same time, we need to make sure that we fulfill the commitment to our budgeted 2018 Annual Fund. Our critical annual fundraising raises the 30% dif-

ference between our reasonably, age-based annual membership commitment and our budget for overall operations such as

air conditioning and heat and lighting and holiday celebrations.

We need to reinvigorate and modernize our learning spaces to reflect our caring, nurturing and child-cen-tered learning environment. We need to be able to show competitive, up-to-date classrooms to visiting, potential families.

2018 is the year when we, as a community, will REFRESH our classrooms and INVIGORATE our

budgeted Annual Fund to bring us into the future!

TIMINGOur plan is complete 10 classrooms during the summer of 2019 and 4 classrooms during the winter of 2019. There may be some adjustments to our regular schedule but since we are work-ing inside the classrooms, we have a schedule that will NOT shut our preschool down during our work period.

We will need to order cabinetry no later than January 2019, which makes our need to raise the cost of the project very time sensitive.

OUR CLASSROOM VISIONBeautiful modernized classrooms with new, custom cabinetry AND durable flooring that will last another 25 years.

Versatile storage organization that will enable Early Childhood Center and Religious School programs to share and flourish in each class-room space.

Bright and aesthetically pleasing walls and ex-hibit areas will open the space for collaboration, learning and movement in each roomNew equipment that will support the modern-ization of each room such as refrigerators, mi-crowaves, tables and chairs.

Beautiful spaces, in which children can quietly read, learn or move around and be creative.

MORE LOVING, HAPPY ENVIRONMENT FOR

YOUR KIDS TO LEARN AND GROW.
