REFLECTION QUOTE:

“We are not infinite. The day does not have more than twenty-four hours. We do not have an inexhausti-ble source of human energy. We cannot keep running on empty. Limits are real, and despite what some stoics might think, limits are not even an enemy. Overloading is the enemy. Some will respond: ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’ Can you? Can you fly? Can you go six months without eating? Neither can you live a healthy life chronically overloaded. God did not intend this verse to repre-sent a negation of life balance. Jesus did not heal all. He did not minister to all. He did not visit all. He did not teach all. He did not work twenty-hour ministry days. It is God the Creator who made limits, and it is the same God who placed them within us for our protection. We exceed them at our peril.”

Welcome and Announcements Pastor Elbert McGowan, Jr. * Call to Worship Proverbs 2:1-8 Mr. Wright Busching Director of Youth Ministries

“My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the up-right; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints.”

Prayer of Invocation and Confession of Sin Mr. Wright Busching

* Song of Preparation “Ancient of Days”

Blessing and honor, glory and power be unto the Ancient of Days; From ev’ry nation, all of creation bow before the Ancient of Days.

Ev’ry tongue in heaven and earth shall declare Your glory, Ev’ry knee shall bow at Your throne in worship; You will be exalted, O God, and Your kingdom shall not pass away, O Ancient of Days.

Your kingdom shall reign over all the earth, sing unto the Ancient of Days; For none can compare to Your matchless worth, sing unto the Ancient of Days.

* Song of Praise “Revelation Song”

Worthy is the Lamb who was slain. Holy, Holy is He. Sing a new song to Him who sits on Heaven's mercy seat.

Chorus: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty! Who was and is and is to come. With all creation I sing praise to the King of kings! You are my everything and I will adore You.

Clothed in rainbows of living color, flashes of lighting rolls of thunder. Blessing and honor strength and glory and power be to You the only one wise King (Chorus)

Filled with wonder awestruck wonder at the mention of Your name. Jesus Your name is power, breath and living water, such a marvelous mystery! (Chorus)

Confession of Faith The Apostle’s Creed Mr. Wright Busching

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended into hades. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Pastoral Prayer Mr. Grant Callen (9:00 am) Mr. Marculis Mosby (11:00 am), Ruling Elders

Scripture Reading and Prayer of Illumination Pastor Elbert McGowan, Jr.

Sermon Text Psalm 127

Sermon Title “Without God’s Wisdom in Our Work, Our Lives Will Be in Vain”

* Communion Hymn “In Christ Alone”

In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song; This Cornerstone, this solid ground, firm through the fiercest drought and storm.

What heights of love, what depths of peace, when fears are stilled, when strivings cease. My Comforter, my All in all, here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone who took on flesh, fullness of God in helpless Babe! This gift of love and righteousness scorned by the ones He came to save.

’Till on the cross as Jesus died, the wrath of God was satisfied. For every sin on Him was laid; here in the death of Christ I live.

Communion Pastor Elbert McGowan, Jr.

Communion Music

* Hymn of Faith “In Christ Alone”

There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain; Then, bursting forth in glorious day, up from the grave He rose again!

And as He stands in victory, sin’s curse has lost its grip on me; For I am His and He is mine, bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death, this is the pow’r of Christ in me; From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny.

No pow’r of hell, no scheme of man, can ever pluck me from His hand; ’Till He returns or calls me home, here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand!

* Worship in Giving and Benediction Pastor Elbert McGowan, Jr.

*Please Stand. (Redeemer Church, PCA, CCLI #257987)

Can you remember a time when you did not apply wisdom to a situation? What was the outcome?

Tim and Kathy Keller write, "One aspect of wisdom means the ability to notice distinctions and shades of difference where others see only a blur. Biblical wisdom brings discernment to the skill of the daily living of life itself. To be wise is to recognize multiple options and possible courses of action where others can imagine only one or two.”

As you think about how the world normally views work, what are the one or two ways it’s viewed? Perhaps one view might be let’s get over and avoid work. Another view might be let’s get completely immersed in our work and do it all the time. Which of these two views is relevant to the Psalm?

Why might Solomon have to warn them (and us) about eating the bread of anxious toil? This is the wisdom’s warning to us.

Wisdom also invites us to a new way to live? What do you remember about these sub-points? A. Partnership with the divine: B. Protection under the divine: C. Good gifts from the divine:

The fruit of wisdom, in this passage, seems to be a sleep and a pivotal shift in how we see our chil-dren (no longer barriers to productivity but great gifts from the hand of God). Why can these things only truly happen when we realize that we have God’s partnership, protection and generosity to us in Christ?

How does wisdom prove itself to be a blessing in this passage?

Do we believe that this is ultimately embodied in Jesus? He will not abandon us in old age and will stand up for us at the gate.
