Reflection

Aside from the themes of “My Antonia “,the novel also talks about friendship, romance and destiny. The protagonist,Jim Burdens,a ten-year-old boy meets a Bohemian girl upon arriving in Nebraska with his grandparents. The 2 become friends and find comfort from one another. They both create their childhood years fun and memorable with the company of each other, until an unexpected event in Antonia’s life came. Her father commit suicide, the reason why Antonia turned into a miserable one.The 2 friends, Jim and Antonia, feel cold in their friendship.

Time passes fast. The 2 separate their ways.Jim goes to school in the city while Antonia works as a housekeeper. While focusing on his studies,Jim also finds time to have dates with Lena,a common friend by him and Antonia.Meanwhile,Antonia finds someone to love in a local boy.But Antonia’s new found love doesn’t have a happy ending because she was deserted by the guy days before their wedding.Yet, Antonia conceive and goes back to Nebraska. Upon hearing the situation of his friend,Jim visits Antonia and promises her that he will return for her soon. The promise remains a promise.Twenty years has passed before Jim finally returns and now a lawyer. Antonia marries and has many children with her husband while Jim chooses to be happy for his friend.

“My Antonia” is a novel which makes its readers realize that whatever life brings, real friends are still be friends.Nothing can ruin the friendship of people who have genuine love for each other.Another is that, life is full of romances. There are times that who you think is right for you,is sometimes not the person who is destined to be with you. Most of the time, love comes to those who are completely strangers than to those who already comfortable with one another.Lastly, the novel tells us that everything in this world is destined to someone or something.

Reflection

The novel,”Farewell to Arms” focuses on the life of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front named Lt.Frederic Henry, and his passion for a beautiful English nurse named Catherine Barkley. She mourns the death of her fiancé from the war last year, and she eagerly enters the pleasurable diversion, the game of love offers with Henry. Henry, too, is revived by love after the horror he has seen of war.

The novel shows us the brutality of war- the nonsense reason of its existence.War is just something that makes both the rivals lost.It is shown in the novel that the use of arms is never a clear solution to a conflict instead, love should dominate to everyone’s heart.Like what Frederic Henry and Catherine Barkley did, instead of wasting their lives in the war during their time, they chose to have a normal life with the company of one another and have their family inspite of the war that surrounds them.Yes, the protagonists do not have a happy ending, but their actions in the novel make me think of the great power of love in the lives of everyone. Love doesn’t choose a context to where it will be felt by people, instead, love is everywhere and anywhere it may be felt.
