I’m writing you to let you know that mother has had two strokes and she has lost a lot of memory. I read your letters to her and as of this last letter she didn't know who you were. However, her memory sways back and forth. Usually she can remember the past but forgets daily conversation from time to time or puts the onion in the freezer and the ice cream in the refrigator. Her attitude and love of life is still happy and she loves company. She goes to the club after supper and has a beer or two and remembers the daily customers but not their previous conversations. Her hearing is bad and she’s always resented the hearing aid and half the time its “lost” in her

JOSEPH WILEY When the tocsin of war sounded and men from every avenue of life flocked to the standard of their country to aid in the preservation of the union, Mr. Wiley donned the blue uniform and went forth to fight for the old flag and the cause it represented, but this was not his only military service, for he was also a veteran of the Mexican war. Certainly he deserves great credit for what he has done for his country, and the republic owes to him a debt of gratitude for his valiant efforts in her behalf. Mr. Wiley is a native of Virginia, his birth having occurred in Stafford county on the 17th day of December, 1827. He represents one of the old and esteemed families of that state. His father, Hezekiah Wiley, was a native of North Carolina, and married Sarah Wheeler, who was born in Maryland. He was killed at a log rolling at Defiance, Ohio, having become one of the pioneer settlers of the Buckeye state. His wife, surviving him for a

number of years, passed away at the age of seventy-six. They were the parents of two children, Joseph and Eliza, the latter now deceased. The mother afterward married again, becoming the wife of Joseph Henderson, by whom she had three sons, all of whom were soldiers of the Thirty-eighth Ohio Infantry, while Thomas was a member of the Sixty-eighth Regiment of Ohio Volunteers. Joseph Wiley, therefore, is the only surviving member of the family. During his early youth his parents removed to Ohio, and there amid the wild scenes of the frontier he was reared to manhood, aiding in the arduous task of developing a new farm and experiencing all the hardships and trials incident to pioneer life. At the time when the United States became involved in war with Mexico, Joseph Wiley enlisted for service in an Ohio regiment and under command of General Scott went to New Orleans and thence to the land of Montezuma. He participated in the campaign under the intrepid leader and took part in a number of important engagements, including the battles of Vera Cruz, Buena Vista and Sacramento. When hostilities had ceased he was honorable discharged and returned home with a good military record. His attention was then devoted to the pursuits of civil life until his country once more became involved in war. His patriotic spirit was aroused by the attempt of the south to overthrow the Union, and at President Lincoln’s call for three hundred thousand troops, in June 1862, he again donned his country’s uniform, enlisting in Defiance, Ohio, as a member of Company D, One Hundredth Ohio Infantry, under Colonel Groom. At later dates his regiment was commanded by Colonel Steven and then by Colonel Bishop. Mr. Wiley participated in the batters of Richmond and Danville, Kentucky, proceeded against General Morgan’s troops and was under fire in the engagements at Loudoun, Tennessee, Concord and Knoxville. He was with General Sherman on the celebrated march to the sea and for ninety days was almost constantly under fire. He also took part in the battle of Resaca, in which he was wounded in the right write, and was also in the thickest of the fight in the engagements at Burnt Hickory, Marietta and Kennesaw Mountain. That was one of the most famous engagement sin the whole war. The troops under General Schofield were commanded to capture the fort, which was in an almost impregnable position, and the General said, “Boys, every man for himself and God for you all.” The brilliant victory there achieved has become a matter of history. As the troops approached Atlanta Mr. Wiley was taken prisoner. The rebels took from him thirty dollars which he possessed, but lift him his knife, and on the way to Andersonville he managed to cut a hole in a box car and make his escape, although he was fired upon by the guards. In attempting to reach the Union lines he obtained food and shelter from the negroes, who were always kind to “Lincoln’s soldiers boys”, and after wandering for twenty-three days he rejoined his regiment at Jonesboro. The command was sent back to meet General Hood’s retreating army on its way to Nashville. For a time Mr. Wiley was with the forces of General Thomas. Later he participated in the battles of Columbia, Alexandria, For Fisher, Fort Anderson, Wilmington and Raleigh, being at the last named place when the news was received that General Lee had surrendered his troops to General Grant. Later he was at Greenboro for two months, and after receiving an honorable discharge he was mustered out of the service at Cleveland, Ohio. Well may he be proud of his military record. In two of the important wars of the country he has displayed his valor and loyalty and well does he deserve the praise, commendation and gratitude of his native land.

After the Civil war closed Mr. Wiley returned to his home in Ohio and there resided until 1871, when he want to Ellsworth county, Kansas, there residing near the city of Ellsworth until 1883, when he came to Barber county. Here he has a good farm of eighty acres, splendidly improved. Mr. Wiley was married in 1865 to Miss Rebecca Wilson, who was born o the bank of the Maumee river near Toledo, Ohio, and pursued her education in that locality. She was a daughter of Hezekiah and Rebecca Wilson, and by her marriage she became the mother of six children, namely: Mrs. Cora Blake; Mrs. Isabella Ash,; Della; Pearl, who is a successful and popular teacher in Barber county; Lucy; and Orin, who died in Louisiana of yellow fever at the age of twenty-seven years. In 1896 Mr. Wiley was called upon to mourn the loss of his wife, who died on the 4th of February of that year, at the age of fifty-two. She was a member of the Christian church and her life was so characterized by kindness and good deeds that she won the love and esteem of all who knew her. In his political views Mr. Wiley was originally a Whig, but on the dissolution of that party he joined the ranks of the new Republican party. He has served as a member of the school board but has never been an office seeker, giving his allegiance to the party simply because he sought reward for his allegiance. For many years he has been a devout member of the Christian church and his life has been very honorable and upright. He has passed the psalmist’s span of three score years and ten, having reached the seventy-fourth milestone on the journey of life, and he receives the veneration and respect which should ever be accorded to those who attain an advanced age. His life has indeed been worthy of the highest regard and his example should serve as a source of inspiration and encouragement to the young.

A STANDARD HISTORY OF KANSAS AND KANSANS Written and compiled by William E. Connelly, Secretary of the Kansas State Historical Society, Topeka Volume V 2nd ed Lewis Publishing Company Chicago New York 1919 Pages 2198-2199 CLARENCE S. BLAKE. No matter how hard have been the conditions with which the early settlers of Kansas have had to contend, at least they have been privileged to lead lives out of ordinary, everyday rut, and few of them today express regret as to the obstacles they unexpectedly were called upon to face. On the other hand, many frank and thoughtful individuals have been led to rejoice I the strong character that has been developed in themselves and others and to cherish the kindred tie in troubles overcome. There are many such, for Kansas is full of big-hearted people who are either early settlers in some section themselves or are direct descendants and proud of it. The year of 1886 was a profilic one in the settlement of Kansas, and among those who came to Grant County in that year was Clarence S. Blake, now a ranchman at Moscow. He is a New England man by birth and ancestry, born at Brownfield in Oxford County Maine, August 14, 1855. His parents were John and Amanda Jane (Kent) Blake. Mrs. Blake was born in New Hampshire and her father was Jonathan Kent, a man well known in his day. John Blake was born at Oxford, Maine, and his vocation was farming. He was intensely loyal to the Union cause during the Civil war, enlisting three times and died while in the service, in 1864, at the age of forty years. At the time of his death he was serving under Gen. Benjamin F. Butler. To John Blake and his wife three sons were born; Clarence S. Charles R., who died in Massachusetts, and John F., who is a rancher in Grant County, Kansas. The mother of these sons died at her home, Mountain View, Maine, in April, 1918. Clarence S. Blake was given public school advantages in Oxford County, and after completing the high school course took further instruction preparatory to entering college. Circumstances changed his plans, however, and he then learned telegraphy, which art, in part, accounted for his coming first to Kansas in 1880. His first telegraphic work was in New Hampshire, on the Boston and Maine Railroad, later being transferred to the Fitchbury line, with office in Boston, and from that city came west to the Santa Fe and worked as a telegraph operator at Peabody, and next at Newton, Kansas. It was then that he had some experience as a cow boy, engaging with Gregory, Eldred and Company, in a cow camp on the Salt Fork in Indian Territory, at Buffalo Springs, and for the same company was on Sleeping Bear Creek. After about one year of that active and more or less adventurous life Mr. Blake came back into Kansas and filed on a tract of land in Barber County. He proved up his claim on Medicine River, near Medicine Lodge, and while doing so was in the stock business and raised the cattle and horses with which he later stocked his claim in Grant County.

It was in the fall of 1886 that Mr. Blake went into Grant and filed his homestead in the southeast part of the county, beginning to live on the same in September, 1887. If occupied the southeast quarter section 18, township 30, range 36. When he located on the place he was accompanied by his wife and child, and brought with him four head of horses and nineteen head of cattle. Mr. Blake started his improvements by constructing a sod house of two rooms, with a tar-paper roof covered with earth and a sod stable for his horses covered with wire and hay. As he had had farm experience in Barber County, e believed he could also successfully raise crops in Grant County, but in this he was disappointed to some extent, and even on one occasion in 1892 when he had 1,500 bushels of wheat to dispose of, he received by 37 and 28 cents a bushel, after hauling the same a distance of fifty-five miles to Garden City. Those were not prosperous times for grain farmers in Grant County, and after a loss of about $1,000 Mr. Blake began to voice his dissatisfaction with the locality. Fortunately a cheerful and far-seeing wife who had become attached t the homestead had influence with him, and he then turned his attention from trying to grow wheat to other crops, having a fine lot of farm machinery that could be just as well used for the planting and harvesting of other grains. In the matter of cattle he always met with satisfactory results. Gradually after become reconciled to the country Mr. Blake began to acquire more land, beginning to buy in 1896 and he kept on until he had some 2,200 acres, but parted with some of it subsequently to the Santa Fe Railroad. His present ranch contains 1,800 acres. In 1900 Mr. Blake went into the mercantile business, establishing a store at old Ulysses, and when that old site was abandoned he moved to the new town, where he continued merchandising until 1914, when he followed the new Santa Fe line and established a store at Moscow, but disposed of this in April, 1918. Mr. Bake was married in Barber County, Kansas, in August, 1885, to Miss Cora Wiley, who was born near Canton, Ohio, in September, 1865. Her parents, Joseph and Rebecca Wiley, came from Ohio to Ellsworth County and then to Barber County, Kansas. Mr. and Mrs. Blake have had the following children: Laura, who died in early womanhood; Earl, who was a ranchman in Grant County, Kansas, until June 10, 1918, when he joined others of the National army at Camp Funston; Grace, who is a graduate of the Kansas State Agricultural College and is a teacher at Ulysses, Kansas, and the owner of the homestead that she proved up; Charles R. , who is the graduate of the above college, is now in the service of his country and is an officer n the National army; Nora, who is the wife of William Christina, of Trinchara, Colorado; Carl, who was engaged in ranching in his county and also carrying on his studies in the Kansas University, was called into military service in 1918; Clara, who was graduated from the high school in Grant County, then took a course in the Kansas State Normal School and is now a student in the University of Arkansas; Roy, who is a member of the United States Marine service as a recruiting officer; Theo May, who died in childhood; and Galena, Mearl and Geneva Wilma, who reside with their parents at Moscow.

During his residence in Grant County Mr. Blake was quite prominently identified with matters of public interest. He has always since voting age been identified with the republican party, and as he has invariably occupied a place of importance in the communities where he has claimed citizenship, public offices of responsibility have again and again been tendered him. Many times he has served as township clerk and treasurer, and once was elected judge of the Probate Curt, but he declined to qualify. Before leaving Grant County he was his party’s candidate for the State Legislature, and could not have failed of election had not a three-cornered contention arisen that broke all party slates. John O'Laughlin, of Lakin, Kan., was born in County Clare, Ireland, June 24, 1842, son of Peter and Margaret (Considine) O'Laughlin. Peter O'Laughlin died in Ireland about 1846. He and Mrs. O'Laughlin were the parents of four sons and one daughter—Michael, Bridget, John, Peter and Thomas. Peter and Bridget died in Ireland. The other children came with their mother to America in 1850, locating at Dubuque, Iowa. In 1858 John went to Minnesota, where he drove a team for one year, and then removed to St. Joseph, Mo., and followed the same occupation until 1861, when he came to Jefferson county, Missouri. Here he worked on a farm and was also in the employ of the Government as teamster in the department of quartermaster at Fort Leavenworth, and was wagonmaster for eight years. He left the Government service at Fort Hays, Kan., December 1, 1869. While doing this work he was in many important frontier expeditions and had many interesting experiences as well as meeting with many hardships. He often lived on buffalo meat and killed a great many of these animals. In December, 1869, he opened a trading post on the military road between Fort Dodge and Fort Hays, doing business with soldiers, buffalo hunters and freighters. During the two years which he operated this store he handled a great deal of business, but closed out when the Santa Fe railroad was built through that part of the country, in 1872. He then went to Dodge City, where he opened a boarding house. The next year he removed to Lakin, just after the Santa Fe road had been completed to that point. In a dug-out he opened the first store in town. For six years he traded with buffalo hunters, freighters and plainsmen. The same business is now owned by his sons, W. D. and J. C. O'Laughlin. Mr. O'Laughlin owns much valuable city property in Lakin and a number of well improved alfalfa farms in the Arkansas valley. He is the pioneer citizen of Kearney county, wealthy, and prominent as a Catholic.

February 5, 1882, his marriage to Miss Mary Farrell, daughter of Dennis and Bridget (Gogerty) Farrell, took place. She is a cultured woman, born of Irish parents at Xenia, Ohio, May 14, 1860. Her father died January 5, 1910, at Wilson, Kan., where her mother still lives. Seven children were born of this union: Margaret B., born September 27, 1883, is single and lives at home; William D. , born February 3, 1885, is a merchant at Lakin; Mary C., born 1886, lives at home; John C., born July 18, 1888, a merchant at Lakin; Jennie Rose, born November 4, 1892, a teacher; Helen G., born August 21, 1897, and Thomas J., born April 12, 1900. Mr. O'Laughlin has until recently been an extensive stock raiser. Although practically retired he is still interested in many local enterprises.
