Chapter 5: Exam Window Scanning Functions

1. Regional Shim Improvements

When a regional shim is activated, it is now displayed in a more-precise size with respect to the FOV and slice stack of the selected sequence. Additionally, the regional shim box will move along with any movement of the slice group. With these improvements, the user will have fewer manipulations to perform when using regional shims.

2. Coils Displayed in Alphabetical Order

In the ScanParameterList window under Others, the Receiver Coil list now displays the receiver coil selections in alphabetical order.

With the coils organized alphabetically, the keyboard can be used to effi ciently select a coil. Follow these steps to effi ciently select a coil using the keyboard:

a. Double-click the Receiver Coil list. The Receiver Coil list is now highlighted (blue), indicating that it is active.

b. Using the keyboard, type the fi rst letter in the name of the receiver coil you wish to select. The Receiver Coil list displays the fi rst coil in the alphabetical listing with the letter you typed. In the following example, the letter “C” was typed, so the Receiver Coil list displays C-Spine, which is the fi rst coil in the alphabetical listing of coils that begins with the letter “C”.

New Features

Chapter 6: Scan Parameters

1. 3D TOF Improvements

Improvements have been made to the 3D TOF slab profi le, the 3D TOF multi-slab combination, and the 3D TOF rephase function. These improvements should be evident when visualizing the 3D TOF data in a MIP task.

In the Rephase list, under Advanced in the ScanParameterList window, clicking Slice_Freq resulted in rephase for acceleration only. With 2.1 software, the addition of H-Slice_Freq to the Rephase list now offers rephase for both velocity and acceleration.

NOTE:HMSA recommends clicking H-Slice_Freq in the Rephase list for optimum image quality.

2. Recon Slice Updates with Slice Reject[%] Changes

The Recon Slice box now automatically updates when the Slice Reject [%] box is changed. The system calculates the Recon Slice value, and takes into account any changes made to the percentage of slices that will be rejected. This results in an accurate and updated value in the Recon Slice box.

3. S-Map Measurement Improvements

S-Map measurements performed with the TR body coil and a receiver coil tend to have irregularities when acquired in anatomical areas that are prone to motion (i.e., abdomen or heart). The position of the anatomy may be different when the TR body coil acquires data, as compared to when the receiver coil acquires data. This can lead to inaccurate image corrections and deterioration of image quality.

The Nest mode for the S-Map sequence improves the accuracy of image corrections by allowing the TR body coil and the receiver coil to scan simultaneously, acquiring the S-Map measurements in an interleaved fashion. Images are matched more accurately, and corrections are improved. The Nest mode for the S-Map sequence is most often used with abdomen and cardiac imaging.

Before changing Slice Reject[%]

After changing Slice Reject[%]. Note that Recon Slice automatically updates (90 slices minus 20 percent slice rejection equals 72 recon slices)

New Features

4. Changes to RAPID RCM

RAPID RCM refers to the Reference Calibration Mode, which is one of the modes that can be selected for RAPID scanning. This mode uses the data from the S-MAP scan as the RAPID calibration scan (the system “references” the S-MAP data), thereby eliminating the need to perform a calibration scan for each individual RAPID scan.

With previous software, clicking RCM from the Mode list (under the RAPID area) caused the Shading list (under the Filter/Post Processing area) to default to NATURAL. With 2.1 software, clicking RCM from the Mode list no longer causes the Shading list to default to NATURAL.

5. New Respiratory Gating Mode

PERRM mode is now available when using respiratory gating. PERRM stands for Phase Encode Reordering to Reduce Motion. This mode is used to suppress respiratory motion artifacts in the phase encoding direction, without the increase in scan time normally seen with the trigger mode. The system monitors abdominal wall motion before the acquisition, then creates a “reference table” of abdominal wall position versus phase encode values. Phase encoding steps are then re-ordered, corresponding to the motion of the abdominal wall.

New parameters for PERRM mode include:

• The PERRM option in the Resp Mode list is available with 2D SE, 2D GE, 2D SG and 2D RSSG sequences.

• Two new options in the Mon.Mode list:

Auto — Abdominal wall position is monitored only during the fi rst PERRM prescan. This information is used for subsequent PERRM scans.

ON — Abdominal wall position is monitored during each PERRM prescan.

• The Mon.Time[sec] box allows you to set the amount of time that the abdominal wall position is monitored. Valid values for monitor time range from 10 to 255 seconds. HMSA recommends a monitor time of 30 to 60 seconds.

New Features

6. Improvement to Silent Mode

Originally, use of the silent mode function would limit the maximum GC amplitude as well as reduce the slew rate to one third. This function has been improved so that silent mode no longer affects GC amplitude, and now reduces the maximum slew rate by one fourth or one half, depending on the sequence. Additionally, the parameter is now labeled Soft Sound, rather than Silent.

4. Revamped Intersection Line Tool Window

Clicking Intersection Lines… from the View menu now displays the Intersection Line Tool window, which was previously titled Select Images. A column labeled Series Name is now included under Series List, making it easier to select the series whose slice lines will be displayed. All other window functions remain the same.

5. Improvement to Measurement Tools

Both Distance and Angle (measurement tools found by clicking Tools and pointing to Measurement on the Review Task window) have been improved. The data measurement calculations are performed more quickly. The values that display for both of these measurements (distance and angle) can now be repositioned to any location within the viewport, so as not to interfere with the anatomy display. Repositioning the distance and angle values to any other location within the viewport is a drag-and-drop operation.

6. New Filming Tool and FilmReview Window Settings

The following changes have been made to the Filming Tool and FilmReview Window.

• The icons have been moved above the fi lm sheet for easier access

• A new Skip button and Skip box have been added

The Skip and Multi Sheet features are especially useful when fi lming chemical shift images. To use the Skip feature:

a. From the Review Task window, click a viewport to specify the series to load into the Filming Tool or FilmReview Window. In the example below, a chemical shift imaging (CSI) series was used.

b. In this example, the objective is to include in the sheet only the frames that contain a graph. As seen in the original fi lm sheet (below left), the second frame in each row contains the desirable graph frame. Therefore enter “2” in the Skip box, since there are two frames to skip between the frames that contain a graph. Additionally, since the fi rst frame is not desired to be included in the sheet, the After Selected option button in the Image Selection area is clicked, along with the upper left frame in the sheet. This confi gures the sheet to start skipping frames after the selected frame, which is the upper left frame in the sheet.

Chapter 8: Post Processing Functions

1. New MIP Setting Fields

Angle and Active Slice boxes have been added for use with sliding or expanding MIPs, as well as volume rendering. The degree of angulation can be entered in or selected from the Angle box. Valid values range from -180 to 180. A slice number can be entered in or selected from the Active Slice box. The corresponding slice will be highlighted in red in the slice stack.

2. Improvements to MIP Image Preview Function

Some MIP parameters can now be changed after clicking the Apply button in the MIP Setting area. If a new option in the 3DAI list is clicked, the preview state is maintained, the Apply button is still selectable, and the MIP images will be generated when Apply is clicked. If a new option in the Number list is clicked, the Apply button is not selectable (grayed).

This improvement is also available with volume rendering in the Task Volume Rendering window.

3. New Maximize Image Feature for MIP Viewports

Individual viewports in the task view area can now be maximized. An individual viewport can be maximized in one of two ways:

1. Click the View menu, point to Toolbars, and click View. This displays the View Toolbar just below the menus in the Review Task window

2. Click the Maximize Image icon from the displayed View Toolbar.

OR

• Click the View menu and click Maximize Image.

An Auto Maximize Image selection is also available. Select a clipping shape (through either the MIP menu or the Clipping Shapes icon on the MIP toolbar). Return to the same drop-down menu and select Auto Maximize Image. The viewport that was selected for clipping will be maximized.

In the small grid-like display in the bottom left corner, the quadrant that represents the currently maximized viewport is highlighted in red and shaded. A different viewport can be maximized by clicking a different quadrant in this small grid-like display.

To restore the normal MIP task display, click the “R” in the small grid-like display, click the Maximize Image icon on the toolbar, or click Maximize Image on the View menu to deselect it.

6. Improvement to Addition of Radial Slices in MIP Task

When using the drag method to add slices in the radial projection mode, the new slices are now added to the center of the radial arrangement instead of the end. The Show Projection Lines button must be clicked to see the projection lines.

In the image above, fi ve slices are displayed, with the center slice (#3) located on the horizontal axis of the image.

When additional slices were added with previous software, the slices would be added after slice #5. Slice #3 would remain on the horizontal axis, but would no longer be the center slice.

In the image above, slice #3 is the active slice, which is why it is highlighted in red.

8. Opacity Curve Window Improvements in Task Volume Rendering

The Opacity Curve window, which is used to adjust the visibility of pixel values in a volume rendering operation, has been improved and moved. Previously, this window was accessed by clicking the single button located below the three preset buttons under the Property area in the Volume Rendering Setting window.

New features and operations include:

• The Opacity list box has been added to the Volume Rendering Setting window. It allows you to select and apply an opacity adjustment function (this list box replaces the Preset list box that was previously displayed within the Opacity Curve window).

• When images are loaded into the Volume Rendering Task window, the opacity curve that corresponds to the option selected in the Opacity list is displayed as a thumbnail view at the bottom of the Volume Rendering Setting window.
