For the seventh consecutive year, Redner’s would like to welcome your family to the Redner’s Family Expo. It continues to be important for our family of employee-owners to have a positive impact within their local community through fair business practices and support of the many philan-thropic organizations with whom we currently partner.

The importance of giving back to the local community continues through Redner’s involvement in many organizations such as Toys for Tots, the American Cancer Society, Berks Encore, the Greater Reading Food Bank, Crime Alert Berks County and the support of local sports teams like the Fightin Phils and the Royals.

Economically it has been a difficult couple of years for many of you and Redner’s has continued to offer the highest possible value for your grocery needs. Redner’s offers not only name brand products at savings but several lines of value added products such as Redner’s own products, Essential Everyday, Shoppers Value, Wild Harvest organics, baby Basics and Equaline Health and Beauty Care. With Redner’s continued growth and increased buying power, programs like the 5/$19.95 and 3/$9.99 meat and deli sales continue weekly to help you save more. The Pump Perks fuel savings program has also continued with additional savings being offered during the Pumped Up Pump Perks program through 11/23/13.

Healthy meal choices are an important part of any family and Meredith Mensinger, RD, LDN, our Registered Dietician, continues to help offer a healthier lifestyle for your family. Proper nutrition is important to all ages and Meredith is available to answer your questions at the Expo, on-line or by mail or phone.

Both days will be filled with entertainment, including magic, theater, puppets, clowns, hands on science activities, and a mobile game station. A second stage was added for YogiDance, Thunderbolts Production Unit, and Yocum Institute Theatre Ensemble. New entertainment includes Gobo the Clown, a puppet show presented by Puppen Meister Productions and the music of Stephanie Grace, a local singer/songwriter originally from Douglassville, making her mark in country music.” Activities and information for everyone in the family including food, healthcare, travel, home and finance are all available.

Have fun and enjoy your day!

It’s not often that an event truly has “something for everyone,” but with food, products and enter-tainment for all ages, the 7th annual Redner’s Mar-kets Family Expo is un-questionably one of those events.

Families throughout Berks County, the Lehigh Valley and southeastern Pennsylvania are already making plans to attend the 2013 Redner’s Markets Family Expo Nov. 2 and 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days at the Greater Read-ing Expo Center, 2525 N. 12th St., Reading.

“The Redner’s Markets Family Expo gets bigger

every year,” said Denice Schaeffer, general manager for Berks-Mont Newspa-pers. “Last year’s event drew more than 10,000 visitors, and we are looking to exceed that number for 2013.

“We’re very excited for this year’s Expo. More than 100 sponsors and exhibitors have already signed up to be there, showcasing products and services for babies, tod-dlers, tweens, teens and adults. There will be lots of entertainment, costumed characters, prizes and an inflatable Play Park for the little ones (and to give Mom and Dad a chance to

take a break).” Exhibitors will offer

information and products dealing with childcare, edu-cation, health, toys, family entertainment, food, cloth-ing, insurance & financial, novelties and more.

And of course, the cen-terpiece is the Redner’s Markets Pavilion, where visitors can sample the best in food and beverages from their favorite brands. Visitors can enjoy sam-ples from Johanna Foods, Keller’s Butter, McCor-mick & Company, Nestle USA, Godshalls Qual-ity Meats, Clover Farms

Most people are principallyunaware of such services untilthey need them. Researchis paramount; however, thevolume of information can beoverwhelming. The simple, short and introductory step isdiscerning what is best for you.

First, if you have a pouredconcrete wall what productsare companies proposing touse? For example, in a plainpoured concrete wall withan extremely visible crackcontractors will apply a boilerplate response by filling it inwith an epoxy (essentially akind of glue).

Further, in some cases theywill actually glue an expensivestrap/strip made of carbonfiber onto it. The carbon fiberis a thin stranded filament 8inches wide 1/8 inch thickglued to the block or cementwall perpendicular to thecrack. Will it stop the waterfor some time? Sure, but withexpansion and contraction oftemperature changes the crack

has a tendency to separateand it will tear the coatings. At the same time from astructural point of view thatwill absolutely not address thestructural repair. The carbonfiber strap probably won’t rip. However, the adhesive appliedto it WILL and strip off thewall leaving you with a wallthat separates.

One of the big concerns witha poured concrete wall crackis that it might stay dormantfor years and or continue downinto the ‘footer’ (the footeris the frame work of whatholds the concrete wall inplace). Most of the time that’snot happening but there is apossibility it is.

So how could a companyguarantee for the lifetime ofthe structure that wall will notmove? By keeping it simple. A90,000 lbs tensile strength 304stainless steel plate. BasementWaterproofing Specialists evenfired a .454 Casull round at onefrom 5 yards away and it did

not penetrate the plate. The crack is epoxied first,

then the plated is epoxied tothe outside of the wall (diggingrequired) and then 6” boltsare applied. Most importantlythis prevents the foundationfrom separating and preventsthe footer from potentiallycracking. We will even digdown further at no extra costand underpin the footer just asan added precaution.

Of course there are timeswhen we cannot performthis procedure on the outsidebecause there might be patio’sor decks. In these cases wewould apply the plate from theinside.

With this tensile strengththat wall isn’t going anywhere. This is the proper way to fixa poured concrete wall. It’swhat our own family memberswould get and nothing less. Ifyou are dealing with crack inyour foundation please give usa call today. We will take careof you and treat you like our

“We’ve added a second entertainment stage this

year, so there will be more opportunities to see one of the acts,” Schaeffer added. “In terms of entertain-ment, we have YogiDance, Thunderbolts Production Unit, and Yocum Institute Theatre Ensemble.”

New entertainment in-cludes Gobo the Clown, a puppet show presented by Puppen Meister Pro-ductions and the music of singer Stephanie Grace.

“We’re very excited this year to feature the music of Stephanie Grace,” said Schaeffer “She is a local singer/songwriter origi-nally from Douglassville, making her mark in coun-try music.”

A vibrant force on the scene, Stephanie Grace is ready to stake her claim in country music with elec-trifying vocals, genuinely sweet songs, and an exu-berantly fresh personality that is mixed with a dose of attitude, charisma and charm. This 16-year-old is making her dreams come true with determination and vision and not letting anything stand in her way.

Set to perform at 2:30 p.m., Sunday at the Red-ner’s Family Expo, she will storm the venue with her brand of unique country music.

With her roots laid down in Douglassville, PA, Stephanie has always been around country music.

“Country was literally all I listened to,” remem-bers this teenage girl. “My parents listened to coun-try radio nonstop and my mom used to play Lorrie Morgan in the car when we were driving to school.”

The passion for singing continued throughout her childhood. “I always loved to sing,” recalls Stephanie. “When I was two, I danced around the house singing Old McDonald into an egg beater over and over. Even when we sat in a circle sing-ing songs in kindergarten, I was always the loudest, even though I was a very shy kid.”

One would never imag-ine that stage fright once bothered this now sharp

performer as she graced the stage with notable acts already including Taylor Swift, Easton Corbin, Gloriana, Josh Turner, John Michael Montgom-ery, Scotty McCreery, and Bucky Covington. This shy-ness went away after her first grade talent show per-formance of What Dreams Are Made Of (from the Lizzie McGuire movie). “When I told my mom I wanted to sing in this tal-ent show, she couldn’t believe it. I surprised the entire school when I got up there to sing. I loved the adrenaline rush I felt on stage and that’s when I knew I wanted to do this for the rest of my life.”

She continued playing

at local restaurants, fairs and carnivals, getting comfortable singing in front of an audience. This paid off when she won Po-cono Junior Idol and Kids Country Idol in 2006. It was around this time when she met Al Brock, President of Spin Doctors in Nashville. “He used to work at a local country station. He told me he was moving back to Nash-ville to start a promotion company and I’d be his first client. It turned out he held true to his word. He has definitely helped jumpstart my career and I can’t thank him enough!”

ule traveling, performing, songwriting and visiting ra-dio stations, this vivacious girl is still focused on her education first and fore-most. As a junior at Agora Cyber Charter School, she is no stranger to the dif-ficulties of balancing her personal life with a music career. “Cyber School is very new to me, but I think it will make traveling and focusing on my music a lot easier. Education is super important to me and I’m glad we found a method that works with my sched-ule!”

This country song-stress now has more than 70 songs in her catalog

and dreams of inspiring others through lyrics that frame her daily experi-ences and casual conver-sations. Songwriting was something that didn’t come naturally at first, but only a few years after her first attempt; you can’t get her to stop writing. “As an 8 year old, I was a little frustrated because I really didn’t have much to write about. Two years later, school was getting rough and my grandmoth-er passed away. I decided to give it another try, and the words just started flowing.”

With musical influ-ences spanning from Mi-randa Lambert, LeAnn Rimes, Trisha Yearwood, Adele and Colbie Caillat,

she credits her continued success to her loving fam-ily and supportive group of friends. “It’s all a girl can ask for. I’ve been very blessed. My parents constantly remind me that the day it’s no longer fun, I don’t have to do it. I have no intention of stopping anytime soon.” Stephanie is aiming high to fulfill her dream, and she knows that working hard will get her there. Her ultimate dream is to perform at the Grand Ole Opry and complete a world tour. “While I can’t be sure what the fu-ture holds, I know that as long as I’m singing coun-try music, I’ll be living my dream!”

Mr. David C. Perry is a multi-talented artist / mu-sician / comedian whose creative concoctions of music, art, puppets, props and humor are guaranteed to appeal to the young and young-at-heart everywhere. Whether you are planning a small birthday party for your four-year old, an assembly for the whole school, or a festival for the entire community, you can count on a sea of happy, smiling faces by inviting Mr. David to entertain at your event.

His most popular party “package” is a one-hour comical concert of “Draw-ings, Songs & Silliness” topped off with a thematic caricature of the birthday

child. For older children (and grown-ups) you can arrange to have him draw additional caricatures, of all the guests. For corpo-rate and retail events, too, his caricatures really “draw a crowd.”

For schools, camps, and libraries, he also presents themed assemblies and conducts hands-on work-shops on both cartooning and song-writing. For large events, such as outdoor fes-tivals, he sometimes teams up with members of his Mighty Bright Band.

David has performed ev-erywhere from the Please Touch Museum to the Her-shey Museum to WXPN’s Kids Corner to the Phila-delphia Folk Festival to

BCTV’s Story Web to the Dr. Demento Show.

In 2002, he was select-ed by the Pennsylvania Library Association as the official artist for their statewide Summer Read-ing Club program.

David is also the found-er and president of Kids Express Productions, which since 1993 has staged inter-generational special events celebrating children’s music and art.

His CD, entitled Hello! Hello! Hello!, is available at www.cdbaby.com/mrd-cperry where you can listen to free samples of every song on the album. Watch David’s videos at www.youtube.com/david-cperry.

Art, music and laughs: It’s no won-der that kids love Mr. David C. Perry!

Our teas are grown wildin Berks County, Pennsylvania and the

surrounding areas. It is pure with no additivesor preservatives, just the way mother earth left it. As a child, Iwould take a basket and scissors and hunt the wild tea along

the creeks, in meadows, and in the woods. My motherwould boil water and steep the wild leaves, add sugar, cool it, and serve it cold in the hot hay fields. Ten yearsago, I dug up some wild mint along a country road and

transplanted it to my garden. Each year it grew andspread. Today, we have acres of tea planted so that

we can share this delightful drink with you. Thisrefreshing drink recipe was passed down through

six generations of my Pennsylvania Dutchancestors. Keep the tradition going by tryingthis refreshing, cool, organic mint tea today!

The history of the Ani-mal Rescue dates back to July 7, 1952, when Mary Archer, a Berks County socialite and lifelong ac-tivist for animal welfare, founded the Animal Res-cue League because of her concern for the humane treatment of animals in Berks County.

Miss Archer was the first president of the Berks County League of Women Voters, the first female member of the Na-tional Committee of the Democratic Party, and the first female member

of the Berks County Prison Board.

She was born into a prominent Reading fam-ily and never married. She used much of her family’s wealth to help others.

Animals always played a vital role in Miss Archer’s life, especially during her many years with the Berks County Humane Society. As a result of continuous struggles over management policies, she left the Hu-mane Society and started the Animal Rescue League on 10-acres of her Flying Hills farm near what would become the junction of Routes 724 and the Mor-gantown Expressway.

Shareholders were found and a board of di-

rectors was established. The league was operated through memberships and donations. Adoptions were arranged on a home-to-home basis from an of-fice in Reading until the kennels were opened in Cumru Township in 1953. Sixteen dogs and four cats were the first animals to be sheltered in the new ken-nels. Miss Archer donated $15,000 to build the new ARL quarters which in-cluded an entrance hall, two office areas, 32 ken-nels, a cat room, and a kitchen area.

Miss Archer was the first president, a position she held until her death on May 28, 1963, at age 82.

In May of 1954, a

woman’s auxiliary was or-ganized to help with fund raising to cover the league’s expenses. Although Miss Archer had contributed large amounts of money in support of the shelter, her fortune was depleted at the time of her death, leav-ing the league to continue without her support and several thousands of dol-lars in debt.

At this point, the fu-ture of the shelter was in doubt. Some stockholders wanted to close its doors while others vowed to con-tinue the league’s mission. Votes were close, but the league supporters won and the Animal Rescue League

continued to operate. In April of 1957, the

league petitioned the City of Reading to ban the sale of dyed baby Easter animals, and on December 18, 1958, the ban became law. The league also was a leader in launching the era of kennel inspections.

The ARL began as a “no kill” shelter, but in time there were more aban-doned animals who need-ed shelter than there was room.

After humane eutha-nasia was introduced, the shelter population almost doubled, from 400 ani-mals per year to 845, with adoptions almost tripling, according to Mary Jane Jacoby, who was a friend

of Miss Archer and a char-ter member of the shelter. Jane also was an auxiliary member and has continued to be active with the league. She presently is serving on the board of directors.

During Harry Brown, the ARL’s Executive Di-rector’s 20-year tenure, the Animal Rescue League has grown into a modern ani-mal shelter with kennels that can accommodate 60 dogs and 60 cats.

To date, spaying and neutering are the only real methods of control over the vast number of unwanted dogs and cats. In 1959, the league was one of the few shelters in the United States to have a compulsory spaying/neutering adoption policy. The league also joined with the Humane Society of the United States to iden-tify dog dealers and private kennels that continued ani-

mal abuse practices.Because of the large

number of laboratory ani-mal dealers in the state, the league also lead the way in encouraging a stronger Pennsylvania Dog Law. State Sen. Gus Yatron in-troduced a stronger Dog Law bill that became law on Dec. 22, 1965. On Aug. 24, 1966, President Lyn-don B. Johnson signed into law the Laboratory Animal Welfare Act to increase protection for laboratory animals.

Through its humane ed-ucation programs and ani-mal cruelty investigations by three state-certified humane and animal con-trol officers, the crusading spirit of Miss Archer lives on today in the Animal Rescue League.

During the pageant, Jes-sica had to answer an im-promptu question from the judges. Their question to her was, “What is the big-gest issue facing the dairy industry today?” Jessica’s response was that the pub-lic doesn’t realize how im-portant the dairy industry is to them.

She also had to perform a skit or a speech. Jessica decided to entertain the crowd with a skit where she talked about the many “hats” a dairy farmer has to wear.

Puppen Meister Pro-ductions will be bringing a country show jamboree to the Redner’s Family Expo. Set to perform both days throughout the day, the show is set to enter-tain.

After spending several years in the retail busi-ness, Ernest M. Wachter opened a candle manu-facturing business in the early 70’s . Business was very good for a few years until the “wave” of novel-ties had passed and Er-nest sold the business.

His interests turned to glass and soon, he started engraving glassware and selling at craft shows up and down the east coast. A couple of years into engraving, Ernest met a

German Glassblower and became interested in hot glass. After some experi-menting, he began making figurines and ornaments in hot glass the “German” way.

One Christmas while selling glassware and Ger-man toys among which were marionettes, Ernest talked with a puppeteer friend about marionettes and they decided to put a small show together. To-gether, they bought their first marionettes and modi-fied them to form a “cir-cus” show. With six pup-pets, they put together a small 15 minute show. The seed was planted.

Ernest continued to make additional mari-onettes using a variety of

materials, the show grew and the duo now had a 30-minute show with 14 marionettes.

They soon found out they needed a new stage, and Ernest built an indoor stage. It too went through some changes until the present stage.

Puppen Meister Produc-tions now have both an in-door and an outdoor stage. Over the years, they have added games to the circus and marionette sales. The Circus ran for 7 years until 2006.

It was time for a new show and Ernest decid-ed that Puppen Meister needed a new show and through some discussion with friends, he decided on a Country show.

Country Kids Jambo-ree, an all-new barn stage 15 new marionettes with new music and script was soon created.

In 2008, Puppen Meis-ter also added a “live” per-former to the show. New country games and pony rides.

“Even though the econ-omy is poor, everyone needs a little entertainment to keep their spirits up and Puppen Meister Produc-tions will be there to raise your spirits and tickle you funny bone,” Ernest said.

Their services include children’s entertainment, festival management, craft show promotions and busi-ness promotions.

This year, the Yo-cum Institute for Arts Education Teen Theater Ensemble of Wyomiss-ing will be making their return to the Redner’s Markets Family Expo.

The Yocum Institute for Arts Education, for-mally the Institute of Arts, has been serving the community for over 75 years.

In 2009, the institute was renamed to honor long-time donor, board member and community philanthropist, James H. Yocum, whose main fo-cus was education.

Quality instruction and access to the arts are

the top priorities of this institute; this is accom-plished through their in-novative programs and the expansion of part-nerships to widen the impact and benefits of the arts in throughout community.

Their mission: “Mak-ing the Arts Make a Dif-ference.”

Through this mis-sion, the institute has increased the number of people served by means of private instruction, on-site classes, exhibits, productions, integrated arts summer camps and outreach programs from to more than 14,000 peo-

ple as of 2010.The Redner’s Fam-

ily Expo is just one of the many on-site perfor-mances that the institute is involved with.

The institute offers classes in the visual arts, dance, music and the-ater.

Originally established in 1934 by Chest Wittell as the Wyomissing INsti-tute of Fine Arts, the In-stitute opened its doors with three music stu-dents. Under Lila Lerch, the first managing direc-tor, the institute grew to over 300 students and has been expanding ever since. An arts-based

pre-school and kinder-garten were added and the institute became li-censed by the state.

In January 2008, the institute became one of 13 national sites to offer Neighborhood Bridges, a program integrated into the classroom cur-riculum to build literacy through the arts.

The institute is also home to the Yocum Gallery which serves as a venue for exhibits and performances, the Berks Art Alliance and “Art Goes to School.”
