Upkey supports theBIG6 Experiences

GPI finds ‘Big Six’ experiences linked to on-time graduation

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Gallup-Purdue released findings on Wednesday (April 8) showing that six factors directly correlate with graduating on time – and, more likely, on budget.

Calling them the “Big Six,” these experiences significantly increase the odds of college students graduating in four years and feeling that their alma mater prepared them well for life after college. However, only 3 percent of students report having all of these six experiences.

The inaugural Gallup-Purdue Index found that it is not where you go to college but how you experience it that matters most. This new analysis also shows that these “Big Six” experiences directly correlate to

a student’s ability to graduate in four years, which can significantly reduce the cost of college:

● Having at least one professor who made them excited about learning

● Feeling professors cared about them as a person

● Having a mentor who encouraged them to pursue goals and dreams

● Working on a project that took a semester or more to complete

● Having an internship or job that allowed them to apply what they were learning in the classroom

● Being extremely active in extracurricular activities and organizations during college

“Once again, we are reminded that it’s not where you go to college but how you go to college,” said Purdue President Mitch Daniels.

Suggestion: In our workshops with teachers, we recommend introducing these Big6 ideas within the context of middle-school and high school learning as a framework for thinking about current and future learning. How do we empower students to self-direct and design their educational plan forward?

Best practices: How others benefitfrom Upkey’s modules?

We find that one of the best ways to engage and prepare students is to assign one or two of the modules as a home-work assignment and faciliatte a follow-up discussion in class once the assignment is complete.

Require students to complete Sam / Gina modules at home and bring back their results to the next class.

(Example: resume, questions, a summary of what they learned).

Step 1During class, facilitate a discussion around student’s learnings from the modules. Questions such as: What did you learn? Why are resumes important? How can you write a strong bullet point? What’s the difference between short and long term goals?

Please note: Students can also complete the modules during a class if computers and headphones are available.

Step 2Ask students to use the feedback functionality to send a live version of their resume or video pitch before coming to class.

Suggestion: We encourage students to share this learning experience with family members, mentors, and other household members, as appropriate to gather collective wisdom and support.

Quick check-list1. Students should be assigned one of the Upkey’s modules (Pre-collegiate Sam is a good start)

2. Students should be encouraged to spend 30-40 minutes completing the modules

3. As part of the assignment, students should be encouraged to print and bring in their Upkey Resume, Upkey Vision board, summary of what they learned. Using the Upkey feedback tool, students are also able to share their output with instructors prior to coming to class.

4. Instructor should facilitate a group discussion by encouraging students to share their learning about the modules. Some of the following questions can be utilized to start the class conversation:

a. What is the goal of having a resume

b. What’s the difference between short and long term goals

c. How can you write a strong bullet point on your resume?

d. Why is it important to demonstrate both technical and non-technical skills?

5. The goal of this conversation with the students is to continue their learning and engagement

6. This is a quiet and independent assignment. Students should work alone on this assignment. However, a post assignment discussion can be done in a group format.
