Reflections from the Pastor by Pastor Brian Taylor

Page 2Page 2Page 2Page 2 Redeemer ReflectionsRedeemer ReflectionsRedeemer ReflectionsRedeemer Reflections

Dear Friends: The older I have gotten, the more I see the need for balance in life. Historically, the Lutheran Church has always talked about the balance between Law and Gos-pel. There are times we need to acknowledge our sinfulness. We need to confess: I have been selfish, I have sinned against God and other people. I am not the person God would want me to be. However, that needs to be balanced by the gospel. I am a child of God. God forgives me and loves me. I am an heir of salvation. If we get out of balance with either, suffer from self-hate and depression,

or pride and narcissism. We also need balance in our faith between living with the promise of heaven and living out our faith on earth. The goal of faith is not just to get to heaven. Yes, I said it. The goal of faith is not just to get to heaven. Certainly, one of the promises of God is heaven and eternal life. It is important for us to live with that promise. It helps us get through the difficult times in this life, and it reminds us of a greater purpose in life. On the other hand, our faith is about living here and now as the people of God. We are called to live as disciples of Jesus: NOW. God wants us to live lives of compassion, forgiveness, service and sacrifice. We are called to balance the hope of heaven with the petition from the Lord’s Prayer: thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. We also need balance in our relationships with other people. There needs to be a balance between having our needs met and enjoying our lives, with meeting the needs of others and making the lives of others better. In all the best marriages, each person seeks to be aware of the needs of their spouse, and meet the needs of the other. When BOTH people are committed to serving the needs of their spouse, they both have their needs met. One caveat here, we need to strive to meet our spouse’s needs MORE than our own. I say that because, we know our own needs, and the natural tendency is to think we are doing more for our spouse than they are doing for us. It’s best to try and give 75% and receive 25%, because if that’s how it feels, it’s probably closer to 50/50. There needs to be a balance between reflection, prayer, meditation and learning and putting our faith into action. It’s possible to spend too much time in prayer and Bible study (although I don’t think that is the problem for most people). It’s also possible to be so busy helping other people and being involved in active ministry that we don’t take the time to spiritually recharge. One of the things Jesus modeled for us was a balance between withdrawing to a private place to pray and being actively involved in helping those in need. There needs to be a balance between listening and talking, between loving God and loving people, between wise saving and generous giving, between work and play, between discipline and fun. May God grant you a happy, fulfilling, balanced life.

In Christ,

CAMPOUT ADVENTURE COMING YOUR WAY! By Lynne Prechel, Associate in Ministry

We LOVE our adventures at Our Redeemer, and the next one coming your way is our annual Labor Day campout and retreat in Oak Glen at the beautiful Luther Glen retreat center, which is perched on a hillside among the apple ranches of that area. This is not an untried adventure for us. We’ve had a blast the last two years, so much so that we have made this event an annual one. Here are some of the options available for fun while you’re there: Swimming pool (newly plastered/tiled), always with lifeguards Archery range (with instructor) and horseshoes court Walking trails to enjoy God’s Creation

Group hike at a nature conservancy Organic vegetable garden tour (new!) Sheep and goats to visit (new!) Learn about worm-composting (new!) Adult (women & men) crafts and children’s crafts Campfire time both evenings with singing (and very silly skits!) Outdoor stone labyrinth to walk and pray Sunday evening worship service Evening wine & cheese parties for adults Relax on the “front porch” with good friends

Nearby Oak Glen has charming apple ranches, interesting local shops with a western feel, apple pie cafes and rustic walking paths, which are just down the hill from our Luther Glen location. Six miles of tree-lined, winding roads connect the apple ranches, which have apple and cider tasting, freshly-picked apples and homemade pies, jams, and cider for purchase. For more information on the general area, see the website for Oak Glen: www.oakglen.net. We also have maps and information brochures about the Oak Glen attractions at the table on the patio between services. Join us for the next adventure at Luther Glen. We’re going campin’! We are always looking for great performers in the months of September through June. Greetings from Preschool

Session 2 of Summer School ended July 31st, and we all had a

wonderful time with 27 adorable children. During this session we got

to meet a few more new students before Fall. We also got to enjoy

some extra special units and a field trip that is so much more fun in

the Summertime. Our themes this July included Patriotism, (did you

catch our Bike Parade on our Facebook Page?), A week of Wild

Animals, Sea life, Pirates and a fun new theme learning about the

Western Frontier!

As I stated, we met a few new friends and did some fun art for

the 4th of July and had great fun decorating bikes for our bike

parade. We had fun learning about some of the Wildest Animals

including Lions, Elephants, Zebras and Hippopotomus’; we painted a real

fish, learned about Jellyfish, seahorses and Shark-Bait!!! As well as

fun doing shell painting! We also had a fun week learning about

Pirates, going on a ‘Treasure Hunt’ and experienced a new unit on the

Western Frontier where we learned to square dance with a little

Yee-Haw fun! On our field trip we went to the Splash Pad in

Westminster for some real fun water play during our Pirate Week.

Coming up in August, Session 3, we will begin by joining in with

VBS… what a fun week it will be. Then we will continue with our units

on Reptiles, Superheroes and Spirit week! We will end the summer

with some good old fashion summer fun, and perhaps make some Ice

Cream or Snow Cones :)

The Preschool will be closed for children after August 28th.

The Day Care Children will begin on September 8th and our regular

Preschool Program will begin on September 14th, with parent orienta-

tion on September 10th. We have limited spaces in some classes, so if

you or someone you know is looking for a great preschool, please give

me a call soon. :)

Thanks again for all your support!

Have a Great Summer!

Sue

Feelings of stress and fear can take a toll on our bodies, but according to Eva M.Selhub, MD, love can abate this damage and restore a natural balance of health and wellbeing. In her book, The Love Response (Ballantine Books, 2009), Dr. Selhub outlines how a combination of thoughts, emotions, reward mechanisms, and positive neuropathways - known as The Love Response - can have a beneficial physiological effect on the body. Through a simple-to-use plan of aware-

ness, breathing, visualization, and verbal command exercises, The Love Response reprograms your brain and changes your biochemistry from negative to positive, putting you on a path to long-term wellness and happiness.

The Love Response is structured around the three essential building blocks of mental health: Social love – deep, intimate relationships including family, friends, and pets Self-love – how to nurture yourself, often the hardest step Spiritual love – contributing to the world beyond your own-needs Dr. Selhub suggests utilizing The Love Response to also help protect against heart disease and diabetes, and boost immunity. Try one of the exercises from Dr. Selhub’s book to begin to cultivate The Love Response:

Make yourself comfortable and close your eyes. Imagine the face of someone you love smiling at you. Take in everything about them, and notice how you feel. Hold onto this feeling as you breathe in and fully exhale. Repeat until a sense of being loved fills you. Do as often as necessary.

THE LOVE RESPONSE

~ Psalm for a Stalled Heart ~

My heart is cold today,

O God. I feel no burning desire, no zeal to pray or be with

you. My heart is sluggish and

stalled.

Send forth your Spirit to

revive my heart. Spark it with a relish for

service, with a longing to

pray.

May I seek to love and serve

you, even when my wintery

heart declines to dance with

springtime grace.

And may my desire to be

your flame of warmth and

love spark other stalled souls to come alive, aflame in you.

May this be so, O God,

may this be so. From Prayers for a Planetary Pilgrim
