(*) INVOCATION, CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION (Please stand.) P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and

cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have

sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives

you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen. (*) HYMN OF PRAISE (LSB 465, st. 1) Now all the vault of heav’n resounds in praise of love that still abounds: “Christ has triumphed! He is living!” Sing, choirs of angels, loud and clear! Repeat their song of glory here: “Christ has triumphed! Christ has triumphed!” Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! (*) SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray.

O merciful Lord, You did not spare Your only Son but delivered Him up for us all. Grant us courage and strength to sing His hallelujah all our lives. We pray this all in Jesus name.

C: Amen. (Please be seated.)

SCRIPTURE READINGS L: The Old Testament Reading for the Sixteenth Sunday After Pentecost is from Psalm 150.

1 Praise the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens. 2 Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness. 3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, 4 praise him with timbrel and dancing, praise him with the strings and pipe, 5 praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals.

6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. Psalm 150 NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. L: The Epistle is from the book of Philemon.

1 Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, To Philemon our dear friend and fellow worker — 2 also to Apphia our sister and

Archippus our fellow soldier —and to the church that meets in your home: 3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 4 I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers, 5 because I hear about your

love for all his holy people and your faith in the Lord Jesus. 6 I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ. 7 Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord's people. Philemon 1-7 NIV

L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. (Please stand to sing.) (*) RESPONSE (LSB 805)

25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said:26 "If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. 27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

28 "Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won't you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, 'This person began to build and wasn't able to finish. '

31 "Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won't he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33 In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.

34 "Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? 35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out. "Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear." Luke 14:25-35 NIV P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. (*) APOSTLES' CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. (Please be seated.)

3 Week of 9-4-2016

Sunday Adult Bible Classes JOINT BIBLE CLASS ON RALLY DAY, SEPTEMBER 11 Plan to join Josh in the Sanctuary as we gather together to kick-off the Education year and hear more about our theme for the year, “Family of Believers.” These classes will begin on Sunday, September 18, at 9:20 am. FAMILY OF BELIEVERS: Redeemer is a family, a family of believers. This study of our 2016-2017 theme will help you understand who we are as a family and where we are going as a family. Our time together will help Redeemer feel like and function even more like one generational family. Pastor Koglin will facilitate this two-week conversation in the South Fellowship Hall. HUH, THAT WAS EASY Sharing our faith in Jesus has long been seen as a challenging, scary, thing, best left to the professionals. The big secret is that it is not scary, it is super easy, and you are already doing it more than you know. This class will open your eyes up to the truth about sharing our faith and will help you celebrate the sharing you are already doing! Join Michael Harvey in the North Fellowship Hall. CREATION TOPIC We have several interesting topics this year in our creation class. We will be looking at biomimicry, which is how science is copying creation to solve difficult problems. We will also be looking at how the ark in Kentucky was built by a team of Amish carpenters, and we will be looking at Ray Comfort's new "Atheist Delusion" which is the rebuttal to Richard Dawkins "The God Delusion"....Frank Kmett will also be sharing about his latest trip to Mammoth Museum in Hot Springs, SD....maybe even time for more topics!!! Join John VanProosdy in the Choir Room/Rm 201.

Friday, September 16 6:00 pm

South Fellowship Hall It’s that time! Grab your friends, your slippers, a comfy chair, and some cash for pizza and pop or bring a snack to share and join us at Movie Night! NIAGARA Heightened by the awesome might and majesty of Niagara Falls, this tense drama stars Marilyn Monroe and Joseph Cotton in a story of love and betrayal, murder and danger. The quaint motel overlooking the famed falls seems like a perfect honeymoon retreat, in fact it’s where the young and beautiful Rose Loomis (Monroe) plans to kill her husband George (Cotton). Monroe’s performance here paints a dark portrait of mystery and suspense. Niagara is powerful entertainment from its intriguing beginning to its shocking conclusion. There will a surprise second movie you will love also.

Be sure to check out the “Call Groups” tab on the Redeemer website (www.redeemer-rochester.com) for the most up-to-date information on the Call Process.

UPDATES FROM THE FOUNDATION TEAM CALL COMMITTEE On July 24, Pastor Lyle Fritsch delivered to the call committee the Personal Information Forms (PIFS) and Self Evaluation Tools (SETS) for the twenty-six candidates to be considered for Redeemer’s Administrative Pastoral vacancy. Using the information gathered from the congregational self- study, staff, and Administrative Pastor job description, each member of the committee took this information and began to thoroughly review the qualifications for each candidate. The committee reduced the number of candidates to six. The committee then conducted a phone interview with each of these six candidates. The phone interviews helped to give the committee further insight on each pastor’s passion, strengths, and knowledge of Redeemer. After reviewing all of the information, the committee is now prepared to bring forward the names of two pastors to the Redeemer voters. They are Pastor David Hormann and Pastor Adam Koglin. Each pastor will be meeting on site at Redeemer with staff and the call committee on the same day as their scheduled forum (forum information below). Information on both pastors will be available in the Narthex up until the time of the Voters Meeting which will be scheduled for a later date. Questions or concerns can be addressed to members of the call committee: Dean Jensen, Mark Kuisle, Mary Hanley, Connie Scheid, Joan McCormick, Bill Cochran, Darin Grewe, Tom Werle, Michael Harvey.

CONGREGATIONAL FORUMS: As part of the call process, the call committee will be hosting congregational forums with Pastor Hormann and Pastor Koglin. These forums will not only serve as a meet-and-greet with the candidates, but will also allow members to ask questions of each candidate. These forums will be another way to gather information on a personal level and will help give us guidance on whether they are the “right” fit for Redeemer. These forums will be the only chance the voters will have to question each candidate in person. Please plan to attend both forums! Both forums will take place in the sanctuary. Child care will be provided. Dates and times for these forums are as follows:

Pastor Koglin: 7:00 pm, Monday, September 12. Pastor Hormann: 7:00 pm, Thursday, September 15.

PRAYER TEAM We offer prayers of thanksgiving and praise to God for bringing us this far in the call

process. We offer prayers for the two pastors the call committee will bring on site. We continue to seek the Lord's guidance as the call process continues. The Prayer Team will organize a prayer vigil at Redeemer once the call has been issued. Stay tuned for those details as they may be announced on a short notice.

. . . to Him be the glory!!

2016 Influenza Vaccine Program Once again the Hy-Vee Health and Wellness Team, Brian Fisk, will be offering flu shots on Sunday, September 25, from 8:30-10:30 am. The clinic will be held in the Par ish Nurse’s office (next to the church office). Blood pressures will be offered in another location.

Why should I get vaccinated? Influenza is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. Hy-Vee is offering the vaccine to those over the age of 6 years. Which vaccine is offered? Hy-Vee is offering a quadrivalent influenza injectable vaccine, which includes 4 strains. MEN’S SERVICE PROJECT

There’s an opportunity

present this autumn that could be completed in relatively short order by a group of guys from Redeemer: helping a member construct a deck on his family’s home. If this is successful, we could consider other projects as they present themselves… sort of an ongoing “RSE-Lite”. If you are interested in helping, or just want more information before deciding, please email Jay Kurtz at [email protected]. Thank you.

CHANNEL ONE BACKPACK PROGRAM

The Channel One backpack

program is looking for additional volunteers for the 2016-2017 school year. Interested in helping? There is a lot of flexibility in times, and work commitment is generally 1-hour every 4-6 weeks. Contact Ellen Blanco at 281-1624 or [email protected] to sign up or for questions.

Unfortunately life isn’t like that – we only think we’re in control. So when something happens and we realize we’re not in control, we feel lost, overwhelmed, angry, even terrified. Stephen Ministers are trained to help when things are out of control. They provide support and encouragement while helping a person put faith and trust in God. If you would like to know more about Stephen Ministry or have a Stephen Minister walk with you through a troubling situation, please call Pastor Adam Koglin, (507) 289-5147.

10 Week of 9-4-2016

REDEEMER LUTHERAN CHURCH Friday, September 23: 7:30 am to 5:00 pm Saturday, September 24: 8:00 am to Noon

Again this year, the annual Fall Rummage sale will be an “all congregation” endeavor. Volunteer workers (men, women, youth) are needed to help. Proceeds will

be applied to Redeemer projects, thus making it a benefit to all Redeemer members. Mark your calendar: Help is needed starting….. Sunday, September 18, afternoon, sorting as donations arrive. Monday, September 19, Mike Hanley has volunteered to lead a crew for the heavy lifting

(setting up tables and clothing racks) Tuesday-Thursday, September 20-22, following the Tuesday morning Bible classes through all

of Wednesday and Thursday, help is needed to organize tables in various areas, sort the donated items, and price items. Help is needed for lifting and moving heavier items, both before and during the sale.

Friday-Saturday, September 23-24: Help is needed during the sale to keep the goods in orderly displays, fill in as cashiers, baggers, and help customers.

Saturday, September 24, Noon: Help is needed boxing up the remaining items and cleaning up the Fellowship Hall.

DON’T WAIT FOR SOMEONE TO CALL — VOLUNTEER YOUR HELP FOR THIS EVENT

INDIVIDUALLY OR WITH YOUR GROUP. JUST SHOW UP! Watch the bulletin for more details. Sarah Circle will offer lunch and baked goods during the sale.

QUILTERS The Redeemer Quilters will resume Monday, September 19, from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. Please join us anytime during and bring a sack lunch. Thank you to all who have donated memorials, fabric, yarn, batting, and thread. We often don’t know where the donations come from, but are always grateful. Special thanks to Dawn Radtke and Ginger Lagergren who travel to pick up batting for us. We continue to furnish quilts and lap robes to Season’s Hospice, Orphan Grain Train, Zumbro Valley Medical Center, Cottage Wood Assisted Living and more. If you can’t join us but are willing to cut fabric or sew quilts together at home, we welcome your help. Contact members are Arlene Krueger (282-4384) or EiLeen Miller (289-3020).

WELCOME VISITORS Whether looking for a church home or just here for the day, we are glad to have you as our guests. Please sign the red Friendship Registration pad in your pew and pick up a visitor packet in the Narthex. Remember that you are our guests; the offering is for our members who support the work of the church through their voluntary gifts.

WORSHIP SCHEDULE Thursday 6:00 pm Saturday 5:30 pm Sunday 8 and 9:30 am HOLY COMMUNION is celebrated in each service the weekends of the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays of the

month. We invite those who acknowledge their sinfulness, recognize that Christ’s body and blood are truly present for our forgiveness, and are willing to give witness to the unity of their faith with this community, to join with us in receiving the sacrament. For those who for health or conscience reasons are not able to receive wine, please note that there is a cup of white grape juice in the middle of each tray. Gluten-free wafers are available in the middle of the bread tray for those with that allergy.

CHILDREN are always welcome at Redeemer. Parents should note that according to your needs and preferences, 1) children’s bulletins and “color bags” are available in the narthex; 2) our nursery is staffed each Sunday morning during the 9:20 am Education Hour and the 10:40 am service. The Nursery is located just off the Narthex -- look for our sign!

WORSHIP TAPES are available in the rack by the elevator. Listen and bring it back or contribute one dollar if you wish to keep the tape.

TRANSPORTATION is available each Sunday morning. Please call the church office (289-5147) by Noon on Thursday.

SPECIAL NEEDS Large print bulletins and personal hearing devices are available in the Narthex from an Usher or at the Welcome Center.
