Forest Carbon is an Indonesian-based environmental consulting rm that provides technical services to REDD project developers and stakeholders. Its team
o experts has extensive experience in Southeast Asia and Arica in orestry, GIS/remote sensing, and environmental policy. Its oce is located in Jakarta.
REDD Project DeveloPment
An environmental services frm that has proven experience developing REDD projects under the voluntary markets inIndonesia.
The conservation o threatened natural orests, the reorestation o
degraded orests and restoration o tropical peatlands can play a
signifcant role in mitigating climate change.
Forest Carbon is an Indonesian-based rm that addresses
the need or a regionally ocused team capable o providing
technical services or carbon orestry projects in tropicalrainorest countries.
Our team o experts work directly with clients on all aspects
o project development, including the ollowing: carbon
baseline measurement, project design, implementation, and
the monitoring, reporting and validation o carbon orestry
projects or the emerging voluntary and compliance carbon
markets.
Forest Carbon has a proven track record advising major
international environmental organizations and private
project developers on REDD projects in Indonesia.
Project Development Process1. Conduct Feasibility Study: Assess additionality, leakage,
and permanence. Develop preliminary estimates o Green
House Gases (GHG) baseline emissions and potential
revenue ows.
2. Defne Project Boundaries.
3. Estimate Carbon Stocks: Conduct eld or aerial biomass
surveys.
4. Calculate Baseline GHG emissions: Apply computer
modeling to predict uture deorestation and emission
rates.
5. Develop monitoring plan or assessing degradation
and deorestation.

Forest Carbon has advised private project developers and conservation
organizations on the development o pioneering REDD Projects
in Indonesia giving it unprecedented insight into the process o
developing a project rom start to fnish.
Advising the Zoological Society o London
Through the Berbak Carbon Initiative (BCI), the Zoological
Society o London (ZSL) seeks to enhance the protection
and management o large tracts o Sumatran Tiger habitat.ZSL aims to achieve this by generating carbon credits to
avoid degradation and deorestation while mitigating
emissions rom peat destruction. Forest Carbon has been
advising on next steps and providing technical support
or ZSL on the early development stages o the BCI
since mid-2009. To date, Forest Carbon has undertaken
preliminary eld work and completed a project easibility
study, established a GHG emission baseline, modeled
uture deorestation with IDRISI Land Change Modeler, and
assessed uture climatic benets o the project.
Infnite Earth’s Rimba Raya Project
Forest Carbon is providing technical assistance to
InniteEarth (IE) and its partners on the establishment o the
Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve Project under the Voluntary
Carbon Standard (VCS). Forest Carbon has worked with IE
on all aspects o developing this large-scale REDD project
since 2008. It has conducted a ull carbon stock assessment
encompassing aerial photography, ground surveys, and
satellite imagery analysis. Forest Carbon’s team also trained
Orangutan Foundation International employees to conduct
uture ground carbon stock assessments which will be
perormed as part o the ongoing carbon monitoring o
the project area. Forest Carbon has developed the technical
sections o the Climate, Community, and Biodiversity
Alliance (CCBA) Standard Project Design Document and
wrote the entire Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS) project
document. Lastly, Forest Carbon has assisted IE with policy
and bureaucratic support at the national and district levels.
Carbon StocksSenior Forest Carbon staf members have more than 20
years o experience in assessing timber volumes and
biomass in tropical orests. We are experts at designing
statistically robust biomass sampling plans that utilize either
ground-based plots or aerial methods. Our aerial method o
assessing carbon stocks has been validated by the VCS and
ofers a much aster and cost efective method or assessing
large remote orests. Forest Carbon also has experience in
estimating below-ground carbon stocks in peat swamp
orests, and has applied scientically valid methods or
sampling peat depth and bulk density.
GHG Baseline Emissions
Predicting uture emissions rom deorestation and
degradation o orests can be complicated and depends
on the REDD project type. Historical emission rates can be
misleading at times in terms o modelling uture emissions.
Thereore, extensive knowledge o the area is essential in
predicting uture rates. Forest Carbon specialists have been
working in Indonesia or more than 12 years. Additionally,
our specialists are trained in the leading sotware models
that predict the extent o deorestation based on real
threats.
