Bird Food Processing Plants

The Perfect Location...Quality ProductsThe Red River Valley, which stretches along the North Dakota/Minnesota border, has long been recognized as one of the world’s rich-est and most productive agricultural regions. Since we have an extensive history of sourcing and processing many agricultural commodities from this fertile land, it is only fitting our corpo-rate name is Red River Commodities!

Red River Commodities was born out of the richness of this region, and we are now proud to play a leadership role in the industries we serve. This leadership position has come, in part, from our single-minded focus on doing what we do best...sourcing specialty crops di-rectly from farmers and processing them for our customers.

We have not become leaders overnight! In-stead we’ve built Red River Commodities by being relent-less in our endeavors. We have added unique processes and invested in modern facilities and equipment, to attain a higher level of product quality. When processing technol-ogy could not provide a desired product for a customer, we have turned to genetic hybrid seed research to find positive solutions. Red River Commodities has taken steps to stabilize the risky business of production agriculture. Locating produc-tion facilities in a number of diverse geographical areas allows Red River Commodities to be less dependent on

the growing conditions of a single geographic region. Our original plant, located in Fargo, North Dakota, is centered in the birthplace of confection sunflower. Our other plant in Colby, Kan-sas represents our strategy to develop new confection sunflower production ar-eas. Our bird food plants located in Fargo, ND and Lubbock, Texas house our growing bird food busi-ness. Zevenbergen, The Netherlands, is the home of our Red River - Van Eck.

custom roasting and packaging business, our SunGold Foods’ facility is conveniently located near our Fargo plant in Horace, ND.

We are committed to meeting our customer needs, and to do so, we know we must continually approach the future aggressively. The people at Red River Commodities ad-here to a rural work ethic made famous in small-town soci-eties. Our desire to work hard and solve problems leads to more satisfied customers - and satisfied customers is our number one priority.

SunGold Foods SunGold Foods is our roasting, salting, and flavoring pro-duction facility for sunflower, soybeans, and other specialty seeds. We also provide contract packaging for customers in a peanut- and tree-nut-free environment.

SunGold Foods has the ability to roast products via frying or drying. The frying of the products is completed in NuSun sunflower oil, which is a transfat-free oil with little to no flavor characteristics, so the flavor of the products being roasted shines through. This method can be used on: Sunflower ker-nels, Soybeans, and Pumpkin kernels. The dry roasting is accomplished by using dry heat. This method is typically used in the dry roasting of inshell sunflower, soybeans, inshell pumpkin, peas, and other beans.

Bird FoodRed River Commodities has been a grassroots processor of wild bird food products for more than 30 years. Our two processing plants, located in Fargo, ND and Lubbock, TX, are right in the heartland of grain growing regions. We enjoy the advantage of con-tracting directly with local growers to provide the freshest possible grains at the best possible prices.

Throughout our years in the indus-try, we have been able to achieve efficient and cost-effective levels of processing, manufacturing, and packaging. Because of our progressive approach to con-tinual product improvement with our wild bird food programs, we have won many vendor awards from several key retailers. We take great pride in providing truly premium-grade quality seed in all our bird food mixes.

SunButterRed River Commodities, for several years, enjoyed a large export market for sunflower kernels. During the late ‘90’s and early ’00 many new origins introduced a lower quality sunflower kernel at cheaper prices and quickly became major suppliers to the export markets. At that time Red River Commodities began to research new and consistent outlets for the kernel.

In cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Services, Red River Commodities began a two year project to develop a substitute for peanut butter made from sunflower seeds.

During this time period Red River Commodities invested in new hybrids, specialized production areas, created SunGold Foods, Inc. and created a peanut and tree nut free environ-ment at both companies.

Ingredient ProcessingOur Ingredient Processing division has been able to achieve a leadership position as a processor of specialty crops used for food ingredients. More than just a food source, we offer a healthy snack alternative. We provide diversified, high-quality products that can be grown both conventional and organically, including: In-shell sunflower, Sunflower kernel, Hulled millet, Sorghum, and Flax. Offering value-added roasting to all our sunflower products, as well as other grains, beans, and seeds.

The business of agriculture can be a risky one! Selling a product that relies on favor-able weather patterns during specific months of the year is bound to have it’s ups and downs.

Red River Commodities has taken steps to help stablize this volatile business by stra-tegically placing our production facilities in three diverse growing regions. This allows us to be less dependent on the conditions of a single geographic region.
