On behalf of the entire membership of Chapter 32, we would like to welcome you to Illinois and 2012 Red Power Round-Up. The Du Quoin State Fairgrounds is the perfect setting for the Red Power Round Up. The grounds include over 1200 acres with 12 lakes and ponds in the camping area. Located on the main grounds, there are plenty of display areas for tractors and equipment and buildings for vendors and exhibits.

We are proud to host the Red Power Round-Up and the 1206 International Tractor is the featured tractor. We hope you enjoy the display of 1206’s and all the other red that is displayed along with it. Everyone has worked very hard to make this one of the best shows ever.

We have many interesting displays, vendors and exhibits. There will be something for everyone to enjoy. Basket making will be done twice daily on the grounds, along with many other lady friendly vendors. The children coming to the show will able to see Timmy the

Red Tractor and Billy Steers, author of Tractor Mac books. On Thursday and Friday, Max Armstrong will be attending the show along with a filming crew from the RFD channel. We would also like to welcome Rodney Miller who will be filing at the event for his new television show, Small Town Big Deal.

You will be seeing red everywhere: red tractors, red implements, trucks, cub cadets, engines, Scouts, memorabilia and most anything that was made to be red.

We are excited to have many sponsors and vendors and would like to thank them for their support. If there is anything we can do for you while you are here, please do not hesitate to ask.

Thank you for coming to our show. We hope you have a great time and come visit Southern Illinois again.

Southern Illinois Chapter 32 of IHC Collectors was formed January 18, 2003 at a meeting in Mt. Vernon. There were over eighty people in attendance at the meeting. By March that year, there were ninety-two original members and one hundred thirty seven charter members. The organizers of the chapter were Larry Kaufman, who became president and Gary Keister, who became treasurer.

Nine board members are elected to three-year terms, serving a maximum of three consecutive terms. Four meetings are conducted per year. At the annual January meeting, officers are elected. Then, there is a spring meeting, summer meeting (generally held in conjunction with the group’s summer expo) and a Christmas party meeting conducted in December.

Since the creation of Chapter 23, the group has grown to nearly two hundred members. Members are encouraged to attend local shows that feature International Harvester Company products in the chapter area. Chapter 32 includes all of southern Illinois south of Interstate 70.

The 2012 featured tractor is the Farmall 1206. In the mid 1960s, the maximum horsepower offered by International Harvester almost doubled. The Farmall 1206 replaced the 560 with a maximum of 113 HP from a turbocharged diesel engine, compared to the previous high of 61 HP.

The Farmalls of the 1960s set new standards by which all other tractors would be gauged in the decades to come. In a frequently repeating series of introductions, IHC bought out more powerful and refined tractors. However, the Model 1206, introduced in 1965, does stand out as a leader of the 1960s IHC tractor dominance. It was the first Farmall two-wheel-drive tractor to utilize a turbocharger and to break the 100 horsepower barrier. Its 361 cubic-inch, six-cylinder, turbocharged diesel cranked out 112 PTO horsepower at the Nebraska Tractor Test.

Other advances the Farmall 1206 was noted for included the first IHC tractors to be quipped with dual-type dry air cleaners and factory-installed cabs.Information courtesy of www.tractordata.com.

The International Harvesters Collectors Club was organized July 1990. Currently, there are over seven thousand members, from forty-nine states and several other countries. There are thirty-five active chapters sanctioned to promote local involvement, with interest in chapters continually expanding.

The purpose of the club is to establish the International Harvester Collectors as an identity to which collectors of IH products can relate: promote IH collecting, restoration and show displays through communication among members; help preserve, research and complete the history of the IH company; aid shows who feature IH with a file of member’s show pieces; hold a large annual show (Red Power Round Up) featuring IH at a different host location each year.

Members receive a quarterly publication, Harvester Highlights, which provides information on club business; reports from various committees; upcoming show listings; news from chapters; feature stories, restoration information and limited free publication of wanted and for sale ads. Insurance is provided for members at club-sanctioned shows. Besides the annual summer show, there is a winter convention with banquet

for members and an all IH auction supported by chapters in a different state each year. The club also supports displays at local farm shows.

The chapters organize local interest, hold annual chapter shows, work together to provide locations for the Red Power Round Up, winter conventions and auction, provide local newsletters, hold meetings with family involvement, promote IH collecting, restoration and show displays, and support the national organization.

Red Power Round Up in Southern Illinois!

History of iHThe roots of the International Harvester run

deep into agricultural history with the merging of five agricultural companies combined to create the strong International Harvester company. This company revolutionized agriculture and invented patents that changed the way of farming that we still use today. No one knew that the merging companies would change agriculture in such a positive and significant way.

To understand the history of International Harvester you must start in the 1830’s not with International Harvester but with Cyrus Hall and Leander J. McCormick. These brothers invented a horse-drawn reaper, which was field demonstrated in 1831. The brothers patented the reaper and moved to Chicago where they started the McCormick Harvester Machine Company. The reaper sold well as it opened farmers eyes and introduced them to new and innovative farming practices. This came together at the perfect time as the railroad systems were developing to transport products taking them around the country and developing a market on a large scale. McCormick also developed marketing and sales techniques along with a network of trained salesmen to demonstrate the machines to potential buyers.

Unfortunately in 1884 Cyrus died and passed the company to his son Cyrus Hall McCormick Jr. The young McCormick made a change in 1902 that changed the company’s future forever. McCormick Harvesting Machine Company, Deering Harvester Company, Milwaukee Company, Plano Company, and Warder

Bushnell and Glessner Company, the manufacturers of Champion Brand, merged to create the International Harvester Company. In 1919 International Harvester made a decision that advanced the company’s future when they purchased the Parlin and Orendorff factory, a leading plow manufacturing factory, and called it the Canton Works factory. This location remained a leading plow manufacturing factory for many decades.

In the mid 1920’s International took one of the largest and maybe most memorable turns in the company’s history. The International Harvester Company purchased a plant in Rock Island, Illinois, but this plant was going to make history in agriculture. The Rock Island plant would produce International’s new line of tractor, Farmall. This would be a suitable tractor to satisfy the average family farmer’s needs at an affordable cost. This line was just what Americans were looking for and by 1930 there were over 100,000 of the Farmall tractors produced. In 1939 Farmall took another leading turn when Raymond Loewy added to the Farmall series by designing the letter series with tractors such as the ‘H’ and ‘M’. These once again were a hit with farmers and International enjoyed a sales lead over their tough competition through the 1940 and 50’s. By 1974 International had produced the 5 millionth tractor from the Rock Island plant.

After International’s widespread success and continued production of their farm equipment, construction and trucks the production costs and competition of leading companies stifled the International

History of iHCompany. In 1979 International Harvester named a new CEO which started the company’s spiraling downfall. After unprofitable lines were cut the company’s profit spiked at a ten year high. The company appeared to be doing quite well on the outside but the inside was the problem about to unfold. Workers and union members were becoming increasingly upset with the company’s cut backs and cost-cutting measures. A strike was inevitable and finally in early November of 1979, the employees took their chances. The strike lasted six months and International Harvester Company lost almost $600 million.

Finally by 1981 the International Harvester had seen its better days. After the financial crisis, strike and internal corporate problems International had to find a way out. After long negotiations International Harvester sold their company to Tenneco, Incorporated in 1984. Tenneco’s subsidiary company J.I. Case Company found interest in the International Company. Case had a full line of farm tractors but lacked equipment such as tillage tools, combines and cotton pickers. Case picked up the International Harvester Company and by the late 1980’s Case IH was in full production. Throughout International Harvester’s history, innovations in product and variety of merchandise helped them persevere through the hard times and have helped shape them into the successful business they have become. Though best known for tractors, International Harvestor also competed against the Big 3 auto companies (Ford,

General Motors and Chrysler) in the early 1900s with their own line of light duty trucks and other vehicles. The Model A Auto Wagon, a precursor to the pick-up truck, was produced from 1907 until 1975. They also produced trucks in the medium/heavy category, a few motorhomes in the 1970s, and military trucks. In fact, the military asked IH to produce M1 Garand rifles in 1951, and they manufactured 337,623 rifles in between 1953 to 1956. International Harvester tested out the Lawn and Garden avenue in the 1960s with riding and push mowers, rotary tillers, garden tractors, power washers, snow blowers, and compost shedders under the now famous “Cub Cadet” name. They also tried their hand at home appliances, selling air conditioners, refrigerators and freezers. Introduced in 1947, the appliance line only sold for ten years. One of the most interesting attempts at jumping ahead of the competition was IH’s Electrall failed system, produced in 1954. The Electrall products were equipment and accessories reported to run on electric power. For instance, an Electrall generator was developed for use on a Farmhall 400 tractor. Few of these products ever made it into production, despite Electrall’s practical applications. Inventions, patents and merging of multiple companies resulted in the successful and major changes in a time when agriculture took root into the American history. The International Harvester Company changed the agricultural industry as we know it today.

Submitted By The American Thresherman Association One of the more unique pieces on display at this year’s red power roundup is a 1913 Titan 45 tractor. This tractor belongs to the American Thresherman Association in Pinckneyville, IL. Built by the Deering Tractor Company, using the IHC Famous engine for its power, it is rated at 45 hp on belt and will pull a 12 bottom plow. At its home show, it is often classified by spectators as one of the steam engines because of its similar appearance. The Titan 45 was the only tractor built by Deering to use the air start system. A single cylinder gas engine in the front compartment is used to build a charge air supply in to a storage tank (approximately 160-75 psi is used to start the main engine). At the appropriate moment, the air is delivered to the main engine thru a third valve in the left cylinder. This air charge forces the piston down and turns the engine to allow an intake and fire of the right cylinder. As soon as the valve is closed, the engine begins to run on its two 9” bore x 14” stroke horizontal cylinders. The cylinder heads and valve mechanisms are exposed in the operators cab. All of the engine works can be seen under the hoods, as there is no oil pan or pressurized lubrication system. All components are either drip oiled or greased by hand operated grease cups. Also of note, there is no intake air filtration of

any kind. The Titan 45 is one of only a handful of this

model left in existence. It was found by a member of the American Thresherman Association back in the 60’s and was about to be scrapped. Some of the

members acquired and restored it. After it was restored and exhibited for a few years, these members felt the club needed to own a large gas tractor and offered it for sale to the club. It has been home in Pinckneyville ever since then, venturing away from their show grounds anymore only for special occasions, such as a Red Power Roundup in your own backyard. An adventurous operator could have made the 14 mile trip to Pinckneyville in one day (top speed of 2 mph) on a

couple of gas tank fillups. The American Thresherman Association shares

several members with IHC Chapter 32 and are proud to exhibit their unique piece at this year’s Round Up.

Welcome to the 2012 Red Power Round Up

FromMayer Farms3 (going on 4) Generations of Farming in Perry County with Red Power

There may still be a few readers who haven’t yet heard about Rodney Miller’s new series “Small Town Big Deal” premiering on RFD-TV September 5. Many, though, are already eagerly anticipating it. Rodney’s a Benton native who’s spent forty-seven years in Franklin County and still has a farm in the area. And RFD-TV has become a high profile network for folks who enjoy rural themes and values. It’s a combination everyone’s talking about and no one wants to miss.

Too, preparing material for his new series, Rodney’s been busy. It’s likely that any local readers who’ve left their homes at all over the last few months to attend a fair, carry kids to summer camp, or attend any local or regional social event have already been way closer than six degrees of separation from Rodney already, and already recognize his face and manner. He has a genuine passion for rural life and for people.

The world is made of stories, and “Small Town Big Deal,” says Rodney, promises to be “an unapologetic celebration of the real-life stories of rural life, of small towns and farming communities and the people, places and events that reflect our values, cherished histories, successes and innovations. In complicated world, some of our best stories are

about what we still call character, patriotism, faith and good common sense.”

In a Kipling poem, “If,” a father explains to his son what it takes to ‘be a man.’ One thing, says the father, is the ability to ‘walk with kings, nor lose the common touch.’ Rodney’s approach fills that bill. Assistant to the Dean with the University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Science, he’s been CEO of McCormick International and Montana Tractors and still serves on a number of prominent boards (including, for the last three years, the local Illinois Rural Heritage Museum’s). He also collects antique

International tractors and seems as eager about featuring of Du Quoin’s Red Power Round Up in July on his show as when he was a 4-H and FFA pre-teen. “I’m so happy the show will be in Du Quoin,” he says. “It’s a gift!”

Everywhere Rodney goes, people have stories. And Rodney sees each one as a gift, one he wants to hear, then share. He also seems as likely, while listening, to roll up his sleeves and offer to help out. And if machinery, agriculture or history are involved, it would probably be wise to let him. He’s clearly the sort of guy who’s as competent and comfortable in the barn and machine shop as he is on campus or in the studio.

There’s no substitute for genuine enthusiasm. It’s welcoming, energizing and contagious. Rodney’s eager for folks to know about “Small Town Big Deal” since it’s an extension of that passion. “Its always about the people,” he says. ‘Small Town Big Deal’ will always be soliciting stories that show why people are proud to be who they are, why they believe small town living is, now more than ever, ‘the good life.’ Rural America is full of captivating history, too. We’ll never run out of stories and plan to be around for a long while telling them.”

“Anyone who supports rural America is going to really enjoy Small Town Big Deal,” he says. “There are stories about our traditions, character, success and innovations everywhere. Take right here. There’s American Thresherman Association, Peg Doughty’s

Oxbow B&B, The Rural Heritage Museum and maybe soon the Basketball Museum. Just the current Du Quoin events are enough to capture anyone’s attention. One could start with the Hayes Stables and Fairgrounds and fill a volume.

Each segment of the show will include three different stories and a few shorts. “Some skits, too,” adds Rodney with a grin. He shares one that’s a real belly roll. Hearing how it was put together is a hoot, and seeing it performed promises to be even better. “Jeff Foxworthy is a friend and big supporter of Small Town Big Deal,” says Rodney. “We met awhile back at a charity cattle auction where a steer I brought in for auction was one he bought and donated. Humor is always part of good nature, and there’ll never be a ‘Small Town Big Deal’ episode that doesn’t include some.”

One point has become clear to Miller as his production travels have broadened: the stories are not only relevant for people in America’s heartland, they also appeal to viewers in mid size and large cities. “Its gratifying and refreshing to learn how interesting our shows are to people inside the beltways. A lot of folks are recognizing the huge appeal of small town life. It’s where they see themselves moving, sooner or later.”

In a world where things are changing, fast, there are valuable things that stay, things worth keeping and translating to others, to now generations. Rodney’s personal experiences with FFA ands 4-H, for example, translate into his

current sponsorship roles with them. “Both FFA and 4-H,” he says, “will be the central causes supported by ‘Small Town Big Deal’ over the coming years. Rural kids are extraordinary, and our futures.”

Rodney’s son, Reid, will be with his dad in July when STBD will be filming a Red Power Roundup episode in Du Quoin. “He’ll be doing some appearances on some other episodes, too, whenever he’s free,” explains Rodney. “Reid has two more years at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Georgia, but there’ll be some time over breaks and holidays. It’s really great to have him involved!”

Rodney spends three or four days a week in the Atlanta, Georgia area with his work at the university close by in Athens. Daughter Lindsey, 27, works nearby in the city. Younger daughter Mallory Harper, is a housewife. “And we have a new grandbaby now, too,” he adds, sitting a little taller in the telling. Family, in fact, explains the Miller’s newest farm home in Ocilla, Georgia. “June 17 was our thirty fourth wedding anniversary, Kendra’s and mine. I’ll be on the road a lot filming with STBD, and this will be ‘home’ now, close to family, close to nature.”

Like most folks who genuinely love what they do and feel blessed, Rodney is eager to express gratitude for other people in his life. There’s family first, of course. But Rodney won’t let many discussions about “Small Town Big Deal” get by without singing the praises of the show’s marketing

director Athalie White, executive producer Roger Mahr or producer Mike Smith.

“Small Town Big Deal,” premiers on RFD-TV on September 5. RFD-TV on all major cable and satellite networks in this area. After STBD episodes air there, they’ll also be available to view online at the RFD-TV website at www.rfdtv.com

“Small Town Big Deal” also has a website of it’s own, www.smalltownbigdeal.com. There’s a big welcome mat out there 24/7 for viewers to share their own stories and to join in what promises to be a long and exciting collaboration of, by and for the people who make up America’s heartland.

Angie Wyatt has covered stories from deep inside the Amazon Jungle and from atop an eighteen-thousand foot mountain. Now, the Emmy nominated news anchor/reporter is exploring new terrain. Angie is introducing a cast of children’s characters through books, toys, and stage performances. One of her son’s first words was “tractor.” This instant love of equipment used on the farm inspired Angie to write Timmy the Tractor: His Hay Day

Timmy the Tractor gets “Back to the Basics” teaching children colors, shapes, sizes, the concepts of teamwork and patience. The cast of children’s characters (including Timmy the Tractor, Manny the Mower, Ralph the Rake, and Bill the Baler) works to help sustain interest in the family farm through books, toys, CDs, apparel, a stage/theatre performance, TV show and DVDs. A series of adventures will take children and their families to the farmstead and a number of other interesting places (some even in the city). The half-hour TV episodes starring Timmy the Tractor provide “edutainment” for all ages and airs on the not for profit Florida Education Channel/PAEC. The show is available in twenty million homes -and in schools- across the country. Those involved in the series include: Artwork provided by Scott Foster; book cover/page layout by Carrie Banovz; music provided by Deanna Freeman; Tara Fasol-Chambers and Rich Redmond; costume construction by William Snyder/MCED; voices by Travis Westbrook and Jacob Payne; and Gidion Small and Gidstability Productions.Angie and Timmy the Tractor will be visiting the Red Power Round Up Thursday, Friday and Saturday

In pursuit of the news of agriculture, Max has originated broadcasts from every state in America and at least thirty nations. His work has earned dozens of honors from agriculture groups, trade associations, professional organizations and fraternities. He has twice been awarded The Oscar in Agriculture presented for excellence in agriculture journalism. In addition to being recognized as Agriculture Communicator Of The Year by the National Agri-Marketing Association, Max was also presented the Master Writer recognition by the American Agricultural

Editors Association. In 2001, he was given the Farm Broadcaster of the Year Award by the National Association of Farm Broadcasters. And he was recently recognized with the highest civilian honor given by the Governor of Indiana, the Sagamore Of The Wabash Award, presented by the late Indiana Governor Frank O’Bannon. A graduate of Purdue University, Max is proud of his Indiana roots, having grown up on a farm in southern Indiana. He has maintained close ties with agriculture and proudly displays at parades, fairs and festivals the 1953 Farmall Super H tractor on which he learned to drive as a boy. Max and his dad’s old tractor have been featured on calendars, videos, playing cards and collectible farm toys. Many of those items were donated or sold to benefit the 4H and FFA youth organizations. Since 1990 Max has contributed his time as a fire commissioner in the western suburbs of Chicago. In that role he hires and promotes firefighters and paramedics for the Lisle-Woodridge Fire Protection District, one of the highest rated fire districts in the United States. It is here where Max resides with his wife, Linda, and teen-age daughters Kristi and Lisa.

Billy Steers began using his artistic talents as a child, creating pictorial diaries of his daily experiences. He furthered his endeavors in college, majoring in geography with an emphasis in cartography at the University of Utah. At that time he also was a regular cartoonist for the student newspaper. After serving as a pilot in the United States Air Force, including participation in the invasion of Panama and the first Gulf War, he left the active duty service and began apprenticing with a well-known children’s book author and illustrator to learn the process of writing and illustrating children’s books. During this time he contributed to over forty titles in a variety of formats as a contract artist. In April 1999, Steers introduced the first children’s book that he wrote and illustrated, Tractor Mac Arrives at the Farm. Originally published by Golden Books, Tractor Mac Arrives at the Farm tells the story of Sibley the work horse who feels slighted when a “shiny new tractor comes and takes over his chores.” Sibley and Mac overcome their differences and become “the best of friends.” Publisher’s Weekly called it a “bright, spirited read aloud” and after only five months the book was in its second printing. Billy Steers has continued on with several more enthralling and likable Tractor Mac children’s

books for boys and girls in the series. Children love the bright, detailed illustrations and absorbing stories, which have become “bedtime favorites.” Subsequent stories include Tractor Mac Learns to Fly followed by Tractor Mac You’re a Winner, Tractor Mac Builds a Barn, Tractor Mac Harvest Time, Tractor Mac Saves Christmas, Tractor Mac Parade’s Best and Tractor Mac Farmer’s Market. The ninth title in the series, Tractor Mac Tune Up was released last spring. Steers regularly visits schools, libraries, and bookstores as well as performs readings, signings, and personalized drawings for boys and girls in the audience. He also performs a presentation of the illustration process which details step-by-step the work involved in the development of a story. When he is not drawing, Billy is a commercial pilot with American Airlines. He lives in Roxbury, CT with his wife and three sons.

The adventures of Tractor Mac come alive through colorful pictures and engaging stories in a series of children’s books for boys and girls by Billy Steers. Tractor Mac has many friends on the farm that all help him learn about friendship, teamwork, the joy of winning, and how to lose gracefully. These books for children accurately depict life on the farm through fun and heart-warming stories that are certain to delight the young reader. So come in and meet Tractor Mac who will show you that there is always something new and fun on the farm no matter what the season. The real Tractor Mac lives in Billy’s barn in Connecticut. Billy’s wife Julie found the 1948 Farmall cub at a flea market and gave it to Billy as a surprise for father’s day shortly after Tractor Mac Arrives at the Farm was published in 1999. When Tractor Mac was brought home, he ran poorly and needed some body work. With help from friends and a visit to the tractor doctor, Lou Tencza, Tractor Mac was back on his wheels in no time. Billy then created eyes and the mouth and Tractor Mac came to life. Tractor Mac travels with Billy to fairs and schools to talk to children about his tractor books. He loves to be photographed and hear from the boys and girls about which Tractor Mac book they love best. Tractor Mac was even on the cover of the September

2006 issue of Popular Mechanics when his home (the barn) was featured in an article on barns built by homeowners. When not traveling with Billy, Tractor Mac works pulling a wagon with firewood or fieldstone for stone walls.

Red Power Round Up!

By Nate Fisher Turn on any Country-Western music station, and within ten minutes you’re guaranteed to hear a hit single about a tractor and what tractors do and how each particular artist’s experience with tractors and the agricultural lifestyle is so above and beyond unique and special that it requires its own song. I know your inner dialogue is saying, “B-b-but, Nate, that’s the root of country music,”and I know, but please, allow me to finish. I’m not denying that an artist might have an exclusive connection to tractors or is drawing from childhood experience on the farm, but it seems to me that several musicians will try to cash in on a theme that appeals to the listener. Once something does well on the charts, there’s no doubt you end up with a stack of cardboard cut-out tunes that are generic, watered down, and only remind you of every other song you’ve heard about that topic. However, there are honest, heartfelt, witty, original songs out there about tractors, so I’ve taken it upon myself to compile a top five of what I believe, in my opinion, to be the most effective and distinctive musical tributes to one of the oldest and reliable farming implements of all time.

5. Jason Aldean – “Amarillo Sky” This Big & Rich-written diddy is relaxin’ at the bottom of the list because it’s the least tractorish song in this top five, but is exceptionally more tractorful than songs by some other artists who get all agro-giddy and drop farm lingo into their lyrics as if to assure their listeners, “No, seriously, tractors and me are like this” (I know you can’t see, dear reader, but I’m crossing my fingers to demonstrate). It’s one of the only songs mentioning tractors in the Country-Western catalogue that doesn’t try to tie in crazy country hijinks involving daisy dukes and alcohol, and this is the biggest reason why I’ve chosen it to start my countdown. Whether this sky is in a particular part of Texas or just lapses into Spanish when talking about its color, there are hardworking people beneath it, busting their hump; waking up before dawn before taking the tractor round and around again to plow, and they never “complain or

ask why” (Unlike a certain Mr. Atkins, who we’ll get to in just a moment). It may not be the most extravagant in its tractor reverence, but it’s honest, chockfull of grit, and a great foundation for the rest of our Top 5.

4. Rodney Atkins – “A Man On A Tractor” It starts out fairly simple: All that Rodney Atkins desires is to be shown “what’s real.” The beginning of the song sets the scene: He’s on his knees, coffee cup in hand, praying for an epiphany. Rodney is under some serious duress; He just woke up “like a stranger in my own life.” Ouch. If

that doesn’t scream identity crisis, I don’t know what does. Will our poor protagonist find any relief? Of course he will. This is country-western music, after all: Simple solutions to complex problems can be found nine times out of ten by just looking out the window, kicking off your shoes, and barbecue. And there it is, Rodney: “A Man on a tractor with a dog in a field.” This is the encouraging image that Rodney

has been searching for in his desperation. “The dog walked just like it was smiling,” which, not to put down anybody’s spiritual moment or anything, sounds incredibly creepy. However, on that note, I’m saved from my brutal imagination dragging me to darker places by the assurance that the man on the tractor “drove like the world was all right.” The tractor’s humming like it’s singing, etc. etc. Is this “what’s real?” Has he been shown the way to, I dunno, not be a stranger to himself, whatever that means? He goes on to plead, “Let me do what I’m doing,” “Let me be where I am,” which are relatively easy things to accomplish if you’re already in the doing or being, so I have a feeling this story is headed toward happy island. He’s found the truth, and not surprisingly, it involves tractors, and Cheshire dogs. More power to you, man. RED power.

line on, I run into a dilemma and can’t decide who she’s actually crushing on. Is it Kenny at the throttle, head full of corn silk and steel guitar, or could it be this sexy, sinfully irresistible tractor? Is the chicken and iced tea brought to distract Kenny so she can secretly woo his tractor over? After all, she won’t shut her yap about how “sexy” it is. You sing, “Just look at her face, she ain’t foolin’ me,” but I beg to differ, Ken. Let’s be real: Sooner or later you’re going to have to admit that you’ve been cuckolded by a tractor.

2. Johnny Cash – Country Trash Johnny comes in at number 2 with the most humble, sincere farming anthem EVER. Seriously. He doesn’t even have to mention the “T” word to make this

one of the best songs celebrating agriculture; He can just allude to it, by simply mentioning pretty much everything you could attach to a tractor, and just like that you have a timeless country hymn with an overly depressing title. The song is set up as an inventory of what little JC has and his reflection on the growing season at hand. Is he pouting about it? (This is the Man in Black we’re talking about, so I’m hoping you took that question as rhetorical, but for those of you that are wondering…) Absolutely not! This guy is more than content with his “dollar laid away,” his shade tree, and is eternally grateful that he even has a cord of wood. He doesn’t have Rodney Atkins’ aforementioned disease, pawing at the window, searching for “what’s real” and bathing himself in pity. It makes no difference to him if his machinery is sexy enough to Kenny Chesney’s crowd. And he has ten times the working spirit of Jason Aldean’s “Amarillo Sky;” Johnny’s only concern with what sky’s he’s under at any given moment in time is that, as he points out, “God’s got a heaven for country trash.” No whining, soul-searching, arrogance; Forget all that, because the “fishing’s good,” my friends. “Let the thunder roll and the lightnin’ flash, I’m doin’ alright for country trash.” Read that again. Go on, read it. See what I mean? Johnny’s farming persona

is like a mixture of Clint Eastwood from “Fistful of Dollars” and Mr. Miyagi from “Karate Kid” wrapped up in a Mackinaw jacket: He’s ready for everything, and nothing is getting past this cat. He’d either grimace a field of rootworms to death or meditate and make a list of the things he’s thankful for until a passing tornado decided to back away from his property. As I mentioned earlier, Johnny’s allusions to farm machinery actually make this the most tractoriffic song on the list just by the association he makes while listing the things he owns and what they’re doing: hopper, turning plow, a double/whipple tree, and a cultivator (Which I’m hoping is a C-254-A Two Row Cultivator attached to a 1949 Farmall C. It makes my heart knot up just thinking of the beauty there). 1. Craig Morgan– International Harvester What else could it be? The big reason Craig Morgan beats Papa Cash out for the number one spot is because Craig has the golden name for his song title. Of course, there’s more to it; He happily jams out while laying claim to his right to hold up traffic on state-paved roads because “they run through my payload.” At first it seems he may be a tad bit peeved at the colorful criticism he gets on the highway for doing 5 MPH, but as you

continue to listen, you realize there’s no sense of apology in his voice. This dude is PROUD of his traffic jams, and if you’re not particularly appreciative of the way he’s driving, he suggests the interstate. When he’s behind the wheel, don’t expect to get home from work any time soon. He has things to do, people. Show a little courtesy. In dropping the names of 4-H and the F.F.A., there’s no doubt that Craig Morgan is the “third-generation farmer” he claims to be. My only issue with Mr. Morgan is that he’s been “married 10 years to the farmer’s daughter,” and I was after her for years upon years before he snatched her up. Craig, there was absolutely no reason to rub that in my face. And in song, nonetheless. Oh, geez. Here come the tears again.

By Rodney MillerPlease let me tell you about more than just a tractor,

although I love tractor stories tremendously also. It is the “legacy” that this particular tractor happens to be a part of.

The tractor is an International Harvester (IH) model 1086, 1978 year, SN# 2610177U029610, and was purchased by my father, John Eugene Miller, in January 1979 from Hamilton County Implements, in McLeansboro, IL. Dad was affectionately known as “Gene”, by his many friends and acquaintances, and this IH 1086 was one of the last “black seat” models made, as the new “western style” cabs had just come out. This tractor has been fully restored, and more will follow about that later, but I want to share more about the “story” and “legacy” this tractor is proud to be a part of.

My Dad, Gene, simply put, was absolutely the greatest man I have ever known. He was an accomplished farmer, father, husband, friend, salesman, deacon, and most importantly, and what he would want to be remembered as; a “born again” Christian since his conversion in 1949. He loved the Lord more than anything else in his life and truly “walked” what he “talked.” He has passed a legacy to me and my three brothers (Larry, Dennis, and Paul) and sister (Sylvia) that we are all honored to be a part of. His legacy encompasses not only the great farming and work ethics he taught us, but more about the eternal things of life; of love and passion for life, of concern for others, of teaching us to be there for others in time of need, and to enjoy friends and family, and much, much, more.

He was born on March 25, 1922 in Franklin County, ILbetween Benton and Mcleansboro. He married my mother,

Elizabeth Emmagene Tate (who was a tremendous cook in addition to a great many other qualities) on Sept 17, 1949. He died, in Benton, IL, on August 15, 2007 at age 85.

My fondest memories in life are of my growing up with my siblings back on the farm in southern Illinois. My days were filled with driving tractors, taking care of cattle, cutting hay, picking blackberries, grinding feed, plowing, discing, planting, harvesting, and the countless other duties I feel honored to have been a part of today. I have a love for nature that was instilled in me and I know he instilled in my brothers and sister, as well as the innumerable other people he came in contact with throughout his eventful life. When I walk those fields that are still in our family today, I am reminded of the countless trips I made over them thru the years with all the many different farm tasks and all at Dad’s careful instruction. Most of what I consider valuable today, I learned on those fields and in that time. Truly “another place and time” from the board rooms and corporate atmosphere that I now live in.

My Dad bought four

“new” tractors in his lifetime. A 1956 WD45 made by Allis Chalmers the year I was born (I have a picture of him holding me as a baby on that tractor). An IH 424 in the early 60’s, an IH 574 in the early 70’s, and then this IH 1086. He owned many used tractors and loved to buy and sell and trade tractors. This IH 1086 was the last one he bought new, and I was there for this monumentous occasion when he “cut” the deal. My uncle, Charlie Miller, was the International Harvester dealer in Mcleansboro, IL, at the time, as he had been for many years.

My dad had worked for Uncle Charlie for many years as a salesman, and he (Uncle Charlie) was the only guy who was a better salesman than my Dad. We looked at the tractor on the lot for quite some time (and I was hoping and praying that we would soon be its proud owners), and then after a bit of “haggling” we decided to go to the Dairy Queen on the square for some lunch. I was on pins and needles hoping my Dad would not be too “stubborn” to make a deal or that Uncle Charlie would “get set” on a price and not give in. Dad argued, “nobody wants the old black seats, every one wants the new western style”, and tried to get the price reduced. After a good bit of jesting in good fun, they struck a deal, and I got to drive it the twenty miles or so, to our farm. Uncle Charlie offered to deliver it but I pleaded that I could drive it home and Dad agreed. Man, was that a great ride or what. I thought, Wow, our first cab tractor on the farm and it was brand spanking new also. Life doesn’t get better than this, or so I thought at the time. That tractor offered many great and productive years of working in our fields.

My dad later sold the tractor to my brother, Larry, who after a few more years sold it again. We had lost track of the tractor and I had asked my nephew, Jerry Miller, who is a great lover of tractors and an avid collector himself, to see if he could find the old 1086.

A few months passed and I got the very sad news in Atlanta early on the morning of August 15 that my daddy, who had been such a wonderful father and friend, had passed away and now was with the Lord. I headed back to IL to be with my relatives that same morning. On my emotional trip from Atlanta to IL, I got a call from Jerry saying maybe this was probably not great timing but he had found “the” tractor. I said it was great timing and wanted to know where it was. It was at Buening Implement in Effingham, IL. I called Dale Buening immediately and told him who I was. He knew me and told me he was considering on taking on our McCormick line of tractors and how was I doing. I told him my dad had passed away and that I thought he had the last tractor he had bought new. I gave the serial number and sure enough it was there. Since it was my Dad’s he offered to sell it to me at his cost. Very nice of him considering I WAS GOING to buy that tractor no matter what. Dale is a great guy and a very astute businessman but obviously very compassionate also. I got up early the next morning and drove the 100 or so miles with my brother Paul to view the tractor and verify its authenticity and sure enough, it was “the” tractor that I drove home almost thirty years ago from the dealership in McLeansboro, IL. I wrote Dale a check and asked if he would keep it till I could get by with a truck to pick it up, which he graciously did.

The restoration of this tractor was done by George Glasscock from central IL, and what a fine job he did. Saying it was one of the largest jobs he had tackled, he persevered, and what a great finished product he produced. He got things fixed mechanically that it needed and replaced parts and rebuilt some others and so on, and so forth. He disassembled it, stripped it down to bare metal, made many reparations, installed new tires, and then started back with primers, sanding, and finally the final finish paint. He also put in a new cab kit and all the trimmings. Then all the reassembly, decals,

and finish work. The attention to detail he did far exceeded my expectations. Thanks George for your fine work. He will get more of my restoration work for sure, as this is one of two dozen or so antique tractors I am honored to own. George started the project in December of 2008, worked off and on thru the winter, and completed the project on May 14, 2009 and I picked it up a few days later.

Can I give you a little info about my Uncle Charlie Miller who also played a part in this tractor and my life as well. He was a very charismatic man; devote Christian, and truly a great salesman. He and some partners owned the IH dealership in McLeansboro IL for many years. He taught me much of what I know today about selling. Even though I was the CEO of McCormick International Tractors, I might add my dream job, I consider myself a salesman always. I have sold tractors most of my life, maybe owning (buying and selling) several hundred or so thru the years personally, and working as a territory manager for various companies I probably have wholesaled at least 5000 tractors before I was promoted to the executive level.

Uncle Charlie was one of those very accomplished salesmen who was a great communicator. He had passion for people and knew his product. He also knew whom he was selling to, something too many salesman today forget. He could be all things to all people, and I loved hearing his stories. Uncle Charlie was born in 1927 and died 1997. His co-workers many times would say of him that he could “sell snowballs to Eskimos”. I would agree with that analogy of his skills. I miss both my Dad and Uncle Charlie. The world was richer with them in it and they both have left a legacy that will live on forever, partly in this IH 1086 and in so many lives around the country that they both have touched.

I want to pass a small portion of my Dad and Uncle Charlie’s heritage on thru the showing of this classic IH 1086, that they both touched in so many ways. I am honored to be the owner and hope to pass it on thru my wife Kendra and our three children (Lindsey, Mallory, and Reid), who can continue to tell the story of the fine heritage this tractor has carried thru its previous owners.

Pictured left is the last tractor he had bought new - an IH 1086. My nephew tracked it down for me in 2007 right after my dad passed away. Below is the tractor restored by George Glasscock.
