  • OVER BLACK:

    NATURE IS NOT HUMAN HEARTED.

--Lau Tzu, Chinese Taoist & Philosopher

    FADE IN:

    EXT. ALASKAN WILDERNESS - NIGHT

Establishing landscape. Rugged trees, slopes and valleys. Beautifully lit by the full moon. Cut-off from civilization. Its storming outside.

    INT. OUTHOUSE - NIGHT

JENNY, 20s, sits on the toilet as rain DRIPS on her head. THUNDER CLAPS as she finishes up going to the bathroom. Her walkie-talkie CHIRPS and we hear the famous sound from Friday the 13th-

    RYAN (V.O.)(static)

    Ki-ki-ki-ma-ma-ma.

Jennys a little on edge, composing herself before responding as she grabs the walkie.

JENNYClever fucker. Im in the ladies room. I got the samples catalogued. What do you need?

    INT. ROOM - NIGHT

Its a small room with only a bunk bed as RYAN, 20s, types away on his laptop which has geological survey information splashed on the screen. He occasionally glances down in his notebook at his notes. Theres a folder with a logo plastered across the front of it:

    VAUGHN GEOLOGICAL

Mining For The Future of Tomorrow

    RYAN(into his walkie)

    Wheres Collins?

JENNY (V.O.)I think hes getting wood.

    RYAN Be careful out there.

    JENNY (V.O.)(static)

    Real nice you douchebag. (MORE)

  • Never tell a girl that in the middle of the night in the woods.

He LAUGHS and puts down the walkie.

    INT. OUTHOUSE - NIGHT

COLLINS, 30s, is now CRAMMED in the small outhouse with her, KISSING on her neck.

    COLLINSGetting wood, huh?

She tries getting into it, but its just too uncomfortable with it raining on them.

    JENNYThis isnt working.

COLLINSNo where else darling. Its storming outside.

JENNYToo bad against company policy is in the shack.

COLLINSGeological number cruncher ruining all the fun.

    (beat)Ive got an idea.

He DRAGS her out of the outhouse.

    EXT. WOODS - NIGHT

It rains harder and the two run for it.

EXT. HUNTING SHACK - ALASKAN BACK COUNTRY - NIGHT

No vehicles around. The only way to this place is by foot. Grass is overgrown around the place due to extremely infrequent use.

The shack is a simple A-frame with a tiny front porch. Easy to assemble and nothing more than a crude shelter to the elements.

The foundation of the shack itself is elevated four feet off the ground on precast concrete columns to prevent structural rotting and underground burrowing. Treated lattice covers the sub-deck, but there are areas exposed all around due to years of no upkeep.

The sound of a small generator powering the three-room shack echoes as it sputters in the quiet rainfall. Jenny and Collins RUN up the steps, go inside and close the door.

    2.JENNY (V.O.) (CONT'D)

  • INT. HUNTING SHACK - MAIN ROOM - CONTINUOUS - NIGHT

The shack is run-down. A main room with a small window and one windowless bedroom with homemade bunk beds and a living room with a wood stove in the center. Three heavy packs are laying on the floor along with other camping necessities.

A few lights are scattered about that are connected to the outside generator. Jenny and Collins BRUSH the rain off.

    COLLINS(yells)

You get the soils coded and data logged?

    RYAN (V.O.)Almost.

Collins eyes him like a boss would. Kaley SLIPS into the back bedroom. Ryan looks up at Collins. Geological survey equipment is strewn about and HUMS as it processes data.

    RYAN(snaps)

    About another hour.

COLLINSRelax. Im just messing with you. What the hell is up?

RYANWeve been in the middle of God knows where for six days and I need a shower. Strike that, were not even technically here.

COLLINSThink about all the triple overtime Vaughn is paying us.

Ryan SMACKS a mosquito on his neck.

    RYANBut no hazard pay.

The satellite phone RINGS and Collins GRABS it. Attempting to answer-

    COLLINSYello?

    (beat)Yeah, hold on.

He TOSSES the phone to Ryan.

    RYANFor me- who is it?

    (beat)This is Ryan-

Pulling it away, he looks at it curiously-

    3.

  • COLLINSI dont know who it was...the battery just went dead! Come on man, youre the tech geek. Im the soil stud.

Ryan PLUGS the phone into the charger.

RYANThing only takes a little bit of juice.

The lights FLICKER and go out.

    RYAN (CONTD)No no no no-

    The machines turn off.

    RYAN (CONTD)Shit!

    COLLINS(looking at the equipment)

Tell me this stuff was charged-

RYANCharging. I burned out the batteries taking readings at the site today.

COLLINSNo worries man. Just the generator. I aint going back out, Im soaked. Your turn.

Ryan puts on his rain gear.

RYANWhered that old nutbag say the gas can was?

COLLINSBack under the overhang. Have fun. Take a bar of soap.

Collins smiles as Ryan heads out of the room.

    EXT. HUNTING SHACK - NIGHT

Ryan opens the door and steps outside.

COLLINSAfter you fill it, youve got to prime the genny and wait three minutes before turning it on.

    RYANThree minutes?

    COLLINSYeah, its been acting weird.

    4.

  • Ryan NODS and heads out the door.

    JENNY (O.C.)Three minutes, huh?

    COLLINSDo we need more time?

    JENNYI need some priming.

Collins turns to see Jenny as shes naked. Collins smiles and LOCKS the door.

    JENNY (CONTD)(smiling)

    Youre a mean ass, Collins.

Collins starts towards her, unbuttoning his shirt.

COLLINSTen minutes. I swear Ill let him back in.

    INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Jenny turns on her laptop and hooks up her Ipod. Cranking the music. The two of them go at it.

    EXT. HUNTING SHACK - NIGHT

Ryan fills the generator. The rain is hard and loud. LIGHTENING FLASHES as something catches his attention. He stops for a moment and scans the woods around him. Nothing. He finishes filling it, screws the cap on and PRIMES it a few times. He checks his watch. 1:37am.

    CRACK

A tree branch SNAPS in the nearby thick brush. Ryan SHINES his flashlight on the wooded area thats merely a few feet away from his position.

    INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Jenny is riding Collins reverse-cowgirl as theyre wrapped in a sleeping bag.

    EXT. HUNTING SHACK - NIGHT

Ryan checks his watch again. 1:38...1:39am. Another NOISE looms from behind him.

    RYAN(whispers)

    Oh, hell with this.

    5.

  • He grabs the starter hand and YANKS on the cord but DROPS the flashlight. Quickly picking it up, he sets it on the ground, FACING the woods so he can use both hands to start the generator. PULLING ONCE-

TWICE. A THIRD TIME as the generator KICKS over and STARTS UP. Bending over, he picks up his flashlight-

    WHAM

A HUGE CLAW SLASHES Ryans face, tearing off his lips and nose & jaw while leaving a GASH in his neck. His body SLAMS into the side of the shack and down onto the generator. He attempts to YELL but nothings coming out. Touching his dangling jaw, it falls onto the ground. All he has now is his upper jaw with exposed teeth.

    INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

    The lights are on now.

    JENNYDid you feel that?

COLLINSHe can wait a few minutes. Keep going-

    EXT. HUNTING SHACK - NIGHT

WINDED and almost knocked unconscious he STRUGGLES to CRAWL AWAY. He sees a tight crawl space in the sub-deck and SCURRIES towards it quickly. The bear hunkers down and gives chase beneath the shack. The generator falls over and disconnects.

    INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

The bunk is SHAKING as Collins humps Jenny along with the rest of the shack as the bear attempts to crawl under it. Jenny slows down for a second-

    JENNYWhat the hell?

EXT. UNDER THE HUNTING SHACK - NIGHT

Ryan watches the dark silhouette of the bear as it paces around the shack, searching for the best way in and finds a larger entrance than what he crawled through.

The bear STRUGGLES hard to get Ryan as he continues to try and yell. Each time, blood bubbles and erupts from his torn up face. Looking back, the bears SWINGING its massive claws at him, finally connecting, it SHREDS his thigh and groin. Ryan bleeds out instantly.

    6.

  • INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Lights are out. Collins is pulling his jeans on.

    JENNYWhat the fuck was that?

COLLINSChrist man, just get the thing running. Hes messing around with us-

The entire shack begins to SHAKE like with a tremor. Jennys eyes grow wide in terror.

    JENNYJesus, earthquake?

Collins stops dead in his tracks, finger to his lips-

    COLLINS(whispers)

    Quiet-

He slowly steps out of the room and CLOSES the door.

    INT. MAIN ROOM - NIGHT

Spinning around the room, using his Iphone as a light, until he finds his pack. Digging through it, he finds his flashlight and he looks for anything that could be a weapon. Nothing.

Walking over to the window, he keeps low to the ground. Peering outside of it, he cant see anything. Heading to the door, he slowly unlocks it. CLICK. Opening it with caution, peeking outside. Nothing.

    EXT. PORCH - NIGHT

He steps out onto the porch and looks around.

    COLLINSRyan, are you fucking around?

The entire shack SHIFTS and Collins FALLS OFF the porch and HITS the ground hard.

    INT. MAIN ROOM - NIGHT

The bear TEARS through the floorboards, RISING up from beneath the shack as the whole place continues to shake.

    INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Jennys completely dressed right now, listening close to the door, bracing herself. Light comes on, then quickly turns off.

    7.

  • JENNY(yells)

    COLLINS!

From outside, it sounds like a FREIGHT TRAIN CRASHING through the shack.

    EXT. HUNTING SHACK - NIGHT

The shaking has subsided. Confusion exudes from Collins as he pulls himself up and heads back up the steps inside.

    INT. MAIN ROOM - NIGHT

Slowly stepping backwards into the darkness, he shines his light on to his right against the wall. The room is empty there. Taking another step back he STUMBLES into the gaping hole in the middle of the floor. The hole is MASSIVE - obviously where the bear BROKE through.

Looking at his feet, seeing whats left of Ryans body, Then he hears it. DEEP BREATHING and the stench of rank flesh & blood. Slowly turning his head, looking behind him, the bears eyes seem to pierce the darkness.

CHOMPING DOWN on his shoulder, he SCREAMS as Jenny opens the door and sees the bear literally RIP him to SHREDS. Its in a feeding frenzy and doesnt notice her. TEARING his body apart, the massive bear BANGS into the walls as the entire place continues to shake and sway.

CREEPING PAST the bear as it DEVOURS Collins, she cant see anything except glints of the massive animal in the faint moonlight. Covering her mouth and muting her scream. Stepping cautiously, one of the damaged floorboards BREAKS beneath her feet-

TUMBLING into the hole in the middle of the room, shes face to face with whats left of Ryans corpse. Turning its attention, the bear SNIFFS in the darkness. Jenny CRAWLS beneath the shack, sees the SATELLITE PHONE, grabs it and heads to an exposed hole in the lattice. CLIMBING OUT-

    EXT. HUNTING SHACK - NIGHT

Jenny SPRINTS towards the woods with the satellite phone in hand and disappears in the darkness as the bear GROWLS in the distance behind her. TEARS ROLLING down her cheeks in pure terror. All she knows is that she has to RUN and cant look back.

    ANGLE ON-

The hunting shack as the bear EXPLODES through the wall like a freight train and breaks out onto open ground chasing Jenny.

    8.

  • INT. WOODS - NIGHT

BLASTING through the forest, BREAKING BRANCHES as it RUNS, the bear gains ground on her. CLIMBING HIGH INTO A TREE, looking down, nothings there... she SCURRIES HIGHER. Looking down, from the darkness the bear LEAPS TOWARDS HER, JAWS AGAPE AND CHOMP-

    RED MACHINE

INT. AIRPLANE - ALASKA - DAY

KALEY, late 20s with blonde hair and beautiful, looks out the window with an eagerness reminiscent of a young girl.

ROWAN, late 20s with a medium build and clean-cut, sits next to her slowly coming out of a sleep. SMILING she turns to him-

KALEYTime to wake up, were here. You realize the farthest north Ive ever been is San Francisco...

    He LAUGHS a little.

ROWANThats the first time youve ever sounded like a Valley girl.

KALEYExcuse me? I grew up in Brentwood.

    ROWANEven worse.

She SMACKS his arm as he digs through his laptop case and she notices a book. Grabbing it, she YANKS it out-

    AMONG GRIZZLIES by Timothy Treadwell

    She eyes the cover.

ROWAN (CONTD)Beckett gave it to me when I was younger.

    KALEYWho is that guy?

ROWANFrom back here in Alaska. We all thought he was nuts but my brother admired him.

(beat)Treadwell- the Grizzly Man. Came every summer and lived with the bears.

    9.

  • KALEY Im soooo excited! Maybe we can even go camping.

    He SHRUGS that notion off.

KALEY (CONTD)Maybe not. Promise me...no work this trip.

ROWANPromise. You really are excited about being here, huh?

    She nods.

KALEYIm just excited about seeing where you came from.

    He LAUGHS a little.

ROWANI left this life behind me.

    She smiles. A moment passes.

    KALEYLet me in.

    ROWANYoure in, Kaley.

    She rolls her eyes.

    KALEYThats a whole other session.

(Redirecting)Whatever it is, between you and your brother, let go of it. Hes all you have now and were here. You really think you can avoid him?

    Forcing a smile.

ROWANThats why were staying in a hotel.

    She stares at him.

    ROWAN (CONTD)Youre right.

KALEYIm always right. Thats why you love me...

    They KISS for a moment.

KALEY (CONTD)You do love me, dont you Rowan?

    10.

  • EXT. AIRPLANE TERMINAL - DAY

Kaley and Rowan wheel out their luggage across the tarmac.

    KALEYWhos meeting us?

ROWANSully. I begged him not to let Beckett know that we were coming to town.

He looks at her, slightly admiring her brutal personality, dragging the past up without hesitation.

ROWAN (CONTD)I probably wouldnt even recognize my brother.

Rowans eyes lock on a sheriffs Forerunner as it pulls up and a MAN gets out.

ROWAN (CONTD)Youve got to be kidding me!

BECKETT - mid thirties, typical muscular build for a former marine with a bit of five oclock shadow & wearing shades as he stands next to his Forerunner SUV thats decked out with SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT decals and a light rack on top. Becketts in uniform.

    KALEYWho is that?

    ROWANThats my goddamned brother.

    KALEYHes a cop?

ROWANNews to me. Didnt know he joined the force.

Rowan and Kaley approach as he pulls off his shades. They size each other up for a moment. He eyes Kaley-

BECKETTAnd you must be Kaley the doctor.

(beat)What? You thought Sully only looked after you? He tells me everything.

    Kaley and Beckett shake hands.

KALEYWell, its a pleasure to finally meet the brother he never talks about.

Beckett GRABS her suitcase and heads to the Forerunner. Kaley SMILES wide at Rowan, this is a HAPPY moment for her, not so much for him. She walks quick to catch up.

    11.

  • BECKETTEveryone in town knows you were flying in. We aint all bumpkins. Id have found out one way or another.

He WINKS at her and THROWS the luggage in the back. Rowans not happy at all about this situation, trying to ignore Beckett. Kaley gets in the back seat. Beckett tries to take Rowans luggage, Rowan jerks it away.

    ROWANI got this.

BECKETTBy the way, youre staying at the house.

    ROWANNo were not.

BECKETTYeah. Everything is booked in town. I made sure of that.

    ROWANYoure an asshole.

    BECKETTJust trying to help.

    ROWANNow youre trying?

They lock eyes. About to fight it out. Kaley pokes her head over the backseat. Rowan skulks around to the passenger side and HOPS in.

    INT. FORERUNNER - DAY

Rowan looks around as Beckett drives down the road. His eyes fall on Beckett, his uniform and gun.

ROWANHow long you been the law up here? Sully never mentioned-

BECKETTI asked him not to. Almost a year now. Traded one uniform for another. I was close to getting out of the base, called up here and Sully welcomed me with open arms.

Kaley rolls down the window and BREATHES deeply.

KALEYSmells like heaven. No smog or-

BECKETTCivilization. Its the one thing I missed when I was in Iraq.

    12.

  • KALEYGod, Ive never smelled anything like this.

    ROWANYoull never forget this smell.

(beat)Actually, the air feels a bit dry-

BECKETTYeah. Not much rainfall this past spring till the last couple weeks.

Another awkward silent moment. Kaley senses the tension, tries cutting it.

KALEYRowan told me you were shipped over seas. Since you came back, what have you been doing?

BECKETTThis and that. Tagging animals for the Sheriffs department. Keeping the peace.

Rowan LAUGHS a little. There is no peace. Kaley BEAMS a harsh look at Rowan.

    KALEYTagging?

BECKETTMonitoring migration patterns of birds. Tracking the wildlife.

    KALEYDo you have any regrets?

They both look back at her, then at each other, first time acting as real brothers. They both LAUGH.

BECKETTYeah, I do have some. Being over there, I realized that I want for nothing in this life.

ROWANWant for nothing says the war hero.

    KALEYIt opened your eyes?

    BECKETTAnd heart.

    ROWAN(sarcastically)

    Your heart?

Kaley picks up on what hes talking about - i.e. Love.

    KALEYWhats her name?

    13.

  • BECKETT(smiles)

    Michelle. Her names Michelle.(beat)

    Were engaged.

ROWANThis is turning into quite the trip.

He looks back at Kaley and smiles.

BECKETTWhat brings you all the way back here brother?

    KALEYVacation.

    BECKETTReally?

KALEYIt was Rowans idea. He had to burn some vacation time.

Beckett processes the information, not believing this for a second.

    BECKETT(pointed)

What have you been doin down in the big city?

    ROWANConsulting.

    (eyeing Kaley in the mirror)

I dont want to bore you with that. Were on vacation.

Rowan leans back and closes his eyes. Kaley watches him curiously. Somethings up with him.

    EXT. ROAD - DAY

The Forerunner cruises down the road.

    EXT. HOUSE - DAY

The Forerunner pulls into the long circle gravel driveway and stops in front of the huge two-story rustic log house. Just from the outside, one can only imagine the heart & soul that went into building this from scratch. Smoke BILLOWS from the chimney. Kaley HOPS out of the vehicle and takes all the beauty in.

MICHELLE, mid-thirties, dark flowing hair, beautiful as the morning sun, steps out onto the porch and waves. She holds up a camera with a medium lens and SNAPS a picture of them by the Forerunner. Michelle just STARES at them as they unload the luggage and start to walk up.

    14.

  • Beckett SIGNS to her. Rowan looks on curiously.

    KALEYRowan, shes deaf.

    ROWANOh...

***(Proper etiquette with deaf people is that when they sign to non-hearing impaired, someone translates as they perform ASL. Its a simultaneous exchange throughout this film.)

Michelle walks down the steps as she and Beckett kiss. She begins SIGNING to Rowan and Kaley as Beckett translates.

BECKETTShe says its so wonderful to finally meet and that Ive told her many things about you that she feels like family.

    Rowan awkwardly smiles.

    ROWANThank you. Likewise.

BECKETTHere Rowan, this is how you say thanks-

Beckett SIGNS thank you as Rowan copies him. Michelle smiles and gives Rowan a big hug. Beckett SIGNS again while gesturing towards Kaley-

    KALEYI know a little ASL-

She SIGNS her name and that its nice to meet her-Michelles eyes LIGHT UP and she SIGNS extremely fast-

    Kaley SIGNS-

KALEY (CONTD)Slow down...Im not that fast.

    They all LAUGH.

BECKETTShes saying how nice itll be having a woman around that she can relate to.

Rowan watches their exchange as Kaley takes a deep breath.

    KALEYSmells like maple...

    Michelle SIGNS-

    KALEY (CONTD)Pancakes!

Rowan closes his eyes for a moment then looks at Beckett.

    15.

  • ROWANReally? Manipulation with pancakes for dinner.

    He rolls his eyes.

BECKETTYou know it, brother. Its your favorite. Michelles idea- she found moms old cookbook.

    They start walking inside.

    ROWAN(to Kaley)

I didnt know you knew any sign language.

    KALEYFirst lesson-

    (SIGNS)K-A-L-E-Y

Rowan copies her awkwardly. Michelle SIGNS-

    BECKETTPractice-practice-practice Rowan.

Michelle HUGS Kaley and waves them inside. On the way in, Rowan PRACTICES SIGNING Kaleys name.

INT. HOUSE - CONTINUOUS - DAY

Beckett leads them through the entryway. Rowan soaks it up, a lot of memories left behind.

    INT. FOYER - DAY

Kaley marvels at the size of the place. Walking through, she eyes the table of family photos. Michelle disappears into the kitchen.

    INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY

Rowan walks through his childhood home, looking at memories he stepped away from. Moving passed the fireplace, he heads towards the patio door at the far wall.

Kaley eyes the bookcase jammed with VHS tapes and sees a bunch marked TREADWELL on LETTERMAN.

    KALEYHey, this is your guy-

ROWANYup. Beckett taped all of his appearances for me.

BECKETTTreadwell educated Rowan and me growing up.

    16.

  • One rule of the house...no food is left uncovered. We like to keep the wild life out there-

    (pointing)In the wild.

    KALEYGot it.

    Kaley grabs her suitcase.

KALEY (CONTD)Where should we put these?

    BECKETTUpstairs is fine.

Rowan slides open the door and steps outside. Kaley disappears up the steps.

    INT. BATHROOM - DAY

Kaley stares at the NEGATIVE pregnancy test. She continues mentally counting days and shrugs it off.

She grabs a couple more hospital brand pregnancy tests from her bag and leaves the bathroom.

    EXT. PORCH - EVENING

Kaley soaks in the setting sun and wilderness just a hundred feet below them.

    KALEY(whispers)

This is your backyard? I already dont want to go back.

Rowan puts his arm around her.

    ROWANA lot of memories.

Kaley turns and sees Beckett walk outside.

    BECKETTTons of memories.

Awkward silence. The ice storm hits. Eyes are daggers.

KALEYIm going to help Michelle with dinner.

    ROWAN/BECKETTBreakfast.

    She disappears inside.

    17.BECKETT (CONT'D)

  • ROWANHow did you and Michelle meet?

    BECKETTIraq.

    ROWANShes in-

BECKETTNo, no. Photo-journalist. She taught me how to find the quiet moments there. How to appreciate them...and I just knew.

    (beat)You enjoy city life?

ROWANI needed a fresh start. Los Angeles seemed like a place I could disappear. Kaley found me-

Michelle steps out onto the porch and SNAPS a photo of the two brothers. She SIGNS-

    BECKETTPancakes are done.

Beckett smiles and wipes away his memory and walks inside. Rowan takes a moment. Nothings resolved.

EXT. WOODS - NIGHT - LATER

    ESTABLISHING.

SQUINTS of Moonlight does its best to permeate through the dense trees. SOUNDS of RODENTS and small ANIMALS as they SCURRY about. A tree branch FALLS from somewhere in the DARK WOODS.

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT - LATER

The fireplace ROARS and CRACKLES with extraordinary life. Each couple is nestled together. A tree branch CRACKS and FALLS from somewhere outside.

    BECKETTDamn thing.

    BEEP BEEP BEEP

    ANGLE ON-

Michelles wrist watch. He GRABS Michelles wrist and TURNS OFF her BEEPING watch.

BECKETT (CONTD)Got her this watch and we set the wedding date with an alarm-

    Michelle SIGNS-

    18.

  • BECKETT (CONTD)Thats right...fifty-three days till we get married.

(beat)But this damn thing has a mind of its own. Its constantly beeping. Cant seem to get it to simply vibrate.

    Beckett makes the SIGN for-

    KALEYI love you...

    (beat)Awww.

    She SIGHS-

    KALEY (CONTD)(to Rowan)

See how easy it is for him to say?

Michelle reciprocates. Michelle YAWNS. Rowan sneaks a yawn too.

BECKETTThose are contagious. We should get some sleep then. Ill turn the fire down, you two hit the hay.

Rowan stands up, Michelle gives him and Kaley a hug. Kaley SIGNS-

    Good night.

They head upstairs for the night.

    ROWANSleep well, you two.

    BECKETT(under his breath)

I dont think theres going to be much sleeping-

    INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Opening the door, peering into his old bedroom which is still like he left it. Several framed photos of him and Beckett and others with them and their parents rest on a dresser. He eyes them for a moment as Kaley unpacks and slips into the bathroom.

    INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Michelle stands in front of Beckett as he grabs her hips and she lifts her shirt. He KISSES her belly as the two fall to the floor and make love in front of the fire.

    19.

  • INT. BATHROOM - NIGHT

Kaleys dressed in a pair of surgical SCRUBS doubling as PJ pants and a short-cropped teddy with a little midriff showing, YAWNS and stares in her mouth as she looks into the mirror. Grabbing a toothbrush, she pastes it up.

Closing the bathroom door slightly, she GRABS the package of a HOSPITAL BRAND pregnancy test (not an over the counter brand), skims over the back and occasionally eyes the test thats resting on the counter as she awaits the results.

She mentally counts off days in her head and on her fingers. Is she pregnant? The test is POSITIVE.

    ROWAN (O.C.)You okay in there?

She POKES her head out the bathroom door with her TOOTHBRUSH hanging from her mouth and NODS.

    INT. BEDROOM

Rowan eyes some of the old photos in his room. Various moments with him & Beckett, Sully, Dad & Mom through the years.

He lays on the bed with his SATELLITE PHONE to his ear, not noticing her. He dials a number while looking at his normal cell phone screen which reads NO SERVICE.

    ROWAN(into the phone)

Hey, its Rowan again. Just landed. Call me - (907) 274-9954.

    KALEYWhos on the phone?

    ROWAN(covering)

    Work stuff.

    KALEYYou promised.

He sets the phone down. She smiles and ducks back inside.

    INT. BATHROOM

Kaley cleans up and buries the test in the garbage can.

    INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

She climbs into bed and rests her head on his chest. Kaley smiles with her secret. Looking at a framed picture on the night stand, its a young Rowan, Beckett, SULLY and their DAD.

KALEYSo thats Sully there I take it?

    20.

  • ROWANThats him.

    EXT. WOODS - NIGHT

    CLOSE UP-

An OWL as it turns its head all the way around and HOOTS.

A BRANCH SNAPS and the owl FLIES away.

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT - LATER

Becketts EYES OPEN as he listens intently to the SOUNDS outside. Slipping away from a sleeping Michelle, he heads into the kitchen while BUTTONING his pants and shirt.

    INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT

With the light off, he STARES outside the window.

    CRACKLE CRACKLE SNAP! SILENCE.

    Somethings out there.

He looks at the exterior door and the SHOTGUN thats MOUNTED above it.

    ROWAN(whispers)

What the hell are you doing?

Beckett nearly LEAPS out of his skin as Rowan SCARES the shit out of him.

    BECKETT(whispers)

    Heard something.

    ROWANWell, lets take a look.

Grabbing the shotgun and slipping their shoes on-

ROWAN (CONTD)Why do you get the gun?

BECKETTI dont want you to shoot me. Take the flashlight-

Rowan begrudgingly takes the FLASHLIGHT off the counter, he opens the door and they step outside.

    EXT. DECK - NIGHT

Walking towards the railing, more commotion as it seems to be coming closer.

    21.

  • BECKETTYoure pissed at me because I left.

ROWANJarhead City knocked some sense into you.

BECKETTYou were never good at holding back. Surprised you havent taken a swing at me-

    ROWANYet.

Beckett looks back at Rowan as he CLOCKS him in his left eye. STAGGERING back a few steps, DROPPING the shotgun Rowan grabs him before he almost TUMBLES down the stairs.

    BECKETTOwww....motherfucker!

    (clutching his eye)We done?

    Beckett picks up the gun.

    ROWANIm just getting warmed up.

    BECKETTYou hear that?

MORE NOISE. Differences aside, they investigate. Beckett PUMPS the SHOTGUN and Rowan turns the FLASHLIGHT ON. Slowly moving down the stairs-

    EXT. WOODS - NIGHT

An UNSEEN owl HOOTS again as a WOLF HOWLS in the distance. Something RUNS towards him. TAKING A FEW STEPS BACK, RAISING THE SHOTGUN- A RACCOON emerges from the BRUSH. Its eyes GLOWING in the beams of his FLASHLIGHT. Beckett takes a DEEP BREATH of relief. It SCURRIES away.

Rowan SNICKERS. Turning back towards the house, theyre STARTLED by-

JOHN SULLY SULLIVAN, sixties, local SHERIFF as hes brandishing a PUMP-ACTION SHOTGUN as well.

    BECKETTChrist Sully!

(beat)You scared the shit out of me.

SULLYSorry...everyones entitled to one good scare in the woods.

    (eyeing Rowan)Well Ill be...little Rowan!

    They HUG.

    22.

  • ROWANReally good to see you.

SULLYSorry about spilling the beans. You two are family. Not supposed to be-

    ROWANI get it.

SULLYRemember, I made a promise to your folks.

BECKETTWhat are you doing out here?

SULLYYour phones rolling to voice mail. Douglass called a bit ago. Dead bear.

BECKETTOne of mine? Christ. Let me grab my gear, Ill roll over with you.

    ROWANI want to go.

    Beckett eyes him.

    BECKETTThought you didnt like Douglass?

    Rowan shrugs it off.

    ROWAN(hiding something)

Its been a while. Why not say hello?

EXT. DOUGLASS HUNTING LODGE - NIGHT

Sullys SHERIFFS SUV pulls into the lodge driveway-

    INT. SHERIFFS SUV - NIGHT

Beckett eyes the sign that reads:

    DOUGLASS HUNTING LODGE WELCOMES YOU

The lodge is sprawled out over several acres. BEAR TRAPS hang from the surrounding wooden fence. A couple ATVs sit close to the garage as does a parked jeep with a camouflaged boat resting on top. Beckett is scrolling through the GPS-RFID machine which is a small handheld device.

    23.

  • BECKETTIve tagged over two hundred animals in the past four months. Radio Frequency Identification -

A small DOT appears on the screen and PULSES.

SULLYHelps keep the riffraff in the wild. If something wanders close to the city, we can deal with it swiftly.

SULLY (CONTD)Real problem is all these land developers coming up here.

BECKETTThose corporate guys really want into the protected lands in the back country. Been a big problem recently. Trying to mine out that land. Deposits of some sort.

    Rowan looks out the window.

EXT. DOUGLASS HUNTING LODGE - NIGHT

Passing by the lodge, Sully FLIPS on his search light as their vehicle pulls out onto the trail and disappears into the woods.

    EXT. WOODS - NIGHT

Sullys SUV pulls to a stop alongside a weathered SUV decked out with massive lights mounted on the roof and a caged grill in the front with a hoist for towing.

DOUGLASS, 60s, leans against the SUV while holding a 12 gauge shotgun. He has some nasty scars across his face from a bear attack years before. A large bear claw hangs around his neck. A trophy. He ADJUSTS his GLASSES.

Beckett, Sully & Rowan hop out as Douglass walks over to their vehicle. Rowan eyes him, they share a moment - something personal between them.

DOUGLASSHow you been Rowan? Havent seen you in years. Youre all grown up.

BECKETTYou kill one of my bears again?

Douglass leads them into the woods.

INT. WOODS - NIGHT - LATER

Becketts eyes DART around the woods. The group approaches a massive bear thats laying in the middle of the woods.

    24.

  • Its leg is CAUGHT and TORN UP from the bear trap. Blood and fur all around.

BECKETTChrist, Douglass. Bear trappings still illegal.

DOUGLASSJust trying to protect my property.

DEPUTY DEPUTY SMITH SMITH, late 30s, is squatting there with his back to Sully. Another DEPUTY-ZOE, 20s, young and pretty takes notes. Looking up, Gerrys frown turns to a smile at seeing Rowan & Beckett-

DEPUTY SMITHIf my eyes dont deceive me. Rowan in the flesh!

    ROWANHow you been Gerry?

SULLYThis here is Deputy Zoe. New to our little family. Transferred in from Fairbanks.

ROWANGerry and Sully treating you well here?

    ZOECant complain.

Beckett eyes the tag on the bear.

    BECKETTHelp me-

    ROWANYou tag this one?

Rowan and Sully join him as he ROLLS the bear out. The animals neck has a HUGE GASH in it.

    BECKETTYeah.

    ROWANWhat the hell?

DOUGLASSI didnt kill this bear though.

SULLYBut you want to cut it open?

DOUGLASSHell yeah. Check and see if its the one that ate Bruce.

ROWANAwww, you think he ate your dog?

    25.

  • DOUGLASSYeah. Bruce went missing a week ago.

ROWANYou still laying traps all over the woods?

DOUGLASSDamn near seven hundred out in them woods around the back country & interior. If I had my way, Id kill all them bears. Let God sort em out.

SULLYYou have no business laying traps down there, Douglass. Ill cite you for that.

    BECKETTThey preserve the balance-

DOUGLASSBalance? Son, were the endangered species out here.

(to Rowan)You understand me, dont ya Row? Weve been touched out here.

Douglass touches the scars on his face.

ROWANThat was a long time ago, Douglass. Im healed.

DOUGLASSTime dont forget in the wild. Wounds heal but a man never does after an encounter out here.

    Sully nods at Gerry.

DEPUTY SMITHIll supervise the autopsy on the bear.

ZOEIm going to head back to the station and write this up.

Sully nods. Zoe walks back to her vehicle.

    SULLY(to Douglass)

You say something about more traps?

    DOUGLASSI didnt stutter.

    26.

  • SULLYNo, no you didnt. How many in this vicinity?

Douglass spins around, arms wide open.

DEPUTY SMITHYou got a map of the trap whereabouts?

DOUGLASSOf course. I forget which cabin the map is stashed in.

    (thinking)Maybe the honeymoon suite.

SULLYWhich cabin is that? You have a dozen of them.

Douglass cleans his glasses and points randomly into the woods as he continues messing with the guys.

DOUGLASSThe one out there. Got a cabin location map in my truck.

    Sully stares him down.

    ROWANIll get it, Sully.

    Rowan walks to Douglass truck.

DOUGLASSThis here is my land. Private. That is my right, right?

(beat)Ill do you a service after I do my service...and get you that map of traps so there will be no accidental severed limbs.

Douglass eyes the pile of bear laying before them. He has a glimmer of sadism in his eyes.

    INT. DOUGLASS TRUCK - NIGHT

Rowan looks through the glove box, finds a map of the cabins, then leans out of the truck.

    ROWAN(yells)

I cant seem to find the map. Douglass-

    INT. WOODS - NIGHT

Douglass starts over to the truck as the others continue talking.

    27.

  • EXT. DOUGLASS TRUCK - NIGHT

Douglass walks around to the other side and opens the doo.

DOUGLASSDamn kid, what have you gotten me into.

    Rowan keeps looking back.

    DOUGLASS (CONTD)You get my calls?

    ROWANIm here, arent I?

DOUGLASSI did what you said. Got your people set-up with gear and directions to your grid coordinates in the back country.

ROWANSatellite phone? I told you no long-range walkie-talkies.

    Douglass reaches into his coat.

DOUGLASSYeah. Of course... didnt want their conversations picked up by any old hams scanning frequencies. They had a couple short range ones-

    ROWAN(thinking)

    Its fine.

DOUGLASSI did everything you told me to do. You said these people were experienced in the outdoors.

ROWANThey are experienced. So what the hell is going on? They havent checked in for a week with me.

DOUGLASSI cant get a hold of them either. Its like theyre gone. Vanished like Casper.

    Rowan looks around, thinking.

DOUGLASS (CONTD)I didnt say nothing to Sully or your brother. They could take my ticket, lose my license.

    ROWANI know.

    DOUGLASSSo what do we do?

    28.

  • ROWANYouve got a mess right there with that bear.

DOUGLASSI know. Plus the business. Its not like I can just take two days and go look for them.

ROWANThis is my problem. I sent them here. Ill figure it out.

DOUGLASSTheyre probably just lost. Heres a copy of the map I gave them. Four different access points for them to choose. I didnt want to know which way they were headed. Not even sure which fire road theyre parked at.

He pulls a map out of his jacket and hands it to Rowan. They walk back to the others.

    ROWANKeep this quiet.

Douglass gestures like hes zippering a zipper across his mouth.

    DOUGLASSZip-locked.

They walk back to the group. Douglass KNEELS down and pulls out a large BLADE.

    SULLYLets get you boys home.

    (beat)Gerry, stay with him.

Gerry nods. Douglass eyes him with disdain. The three of them walk away just as Douglass SLICES open the bears STOMACH-

INT. SHERIFFS SUV - NIGHT - LATER

    BECKETT(suspicious)

You two had some words back there, huh?

    Sully looks over at Rowan.

    ROWANJust catching up.

INT. CLEARING - NIGHT - LATER

Deputy Smith stares in disgust as Douglass is covered in blood from hip to hilt, rooting around the bears belly.

    29.

  • DEPUTY SMITHYou finished playing around in there?

DOUGLASSDamn. Nothing. He didnt eat my dog.

    DEPUTY SMITHFuckin mess.

DOUGLASSNaturell clean it up. Biodegradeable at its finest.

DEPUTY SMITHWheres this shack of yours?

DOUGLASSOut there. But its a secret. You mind?

Douglass walks over to his SUV and hops in. Gerry opens the passenger door as he starts it up.

DOUGLASS (CONTD)Shit. Flashlights back in the house. You have one in your truck?

Gerry nods. About to close the door, he decides to leave it WIDE OPEN. Douglass LAUGHS a little as Gerry walks back towards his truck.

    EXT. SHERIFFS VEHICLE - NIGHT

Gerry grabs the flashlight and turns back to Douglass vehicle.

    INT. RANGE ROVER - NIGHT

Douglass ADJUSTS the rearview mirror. Eyeing Gerry as he gets close and PEELS away. The passenger side door HITS a tree and SLAMS shut.

    EXT. WOODS - NIGHT

Gerry runs back to his vehicle and JUMPS in.

    INT. SHERIFFS VEHICLE - NIGHT

Looking out the window, Douglass is long gone and out of sight.

DEPUTY SMITHSon of a fucking bitch.

    30.

  • INT. RANGE ROVER - NIGHT - LATER

Douglass cranks the Johnny Cash tune...The Man Comes Around

RADIO...And the whirlwind is in the thorn tree. The virgins are all trimming their wicks. The whirlwind is in the thorn tree. Its hard for thee to kick against the pricks. In measured hundredweight and penny pound. When the man comes around. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts, and I looked and behold: a pale horse. And his name that sat on him, was Death. And Hell followed with him.

He slows to a stop as we now see a quaint little cabin just ahead. He kills the engine.

Opening the door, GRABS his shotgun, Douglass gets out. Listening. He breathes in deep.

The RADIO CHIRPS and STARTLES him a little.

    DEPUTY SMITH (V.O.)(static)

    Douglass - you copy?

He leans in the cab and grabs the radio.

DEPUTY SMITH (V.O.)Im within reason to haul your ass-

YANKING hard, it UNPLUGS. Douglass TOSSES the radio back inside.

    SILENCE.

Somethings amiss. Douglass looks around cautiously. FLASHLIGHT pressed against his shotgun, he takes a few steps towards the little shack thats not much larger than an outhouse.

    EXT. HONEYMOON CABIN - NIGHT

He shines the light on the lock. Its intact. Satisfied, he grabs the key and unlocks the padlock.

STICKS break from somewhere behind him.

MOVEMENT in the darkness. He SPINS around. NOTHING.

    DOUGLASS(muttering)

    Silly old man.

UNLATCHING the door, he opens it and steps inside.

    31.

  • INT. HONEYMOON CABIN - NIGHT

SHINING the light around, he sees a ZIPLOCK BAG tacked onto the wall. PULLING it down, he opens it and pulls out a folded-up piece of paper - HIS MAP of where the TRAPS are.

Staring at it for a moment-

DOUGLASSDamn, more than I thought I had out here.

Satisfied, he folds it up, tucks it in his pocket and walks out.

    EXT. HONEYMOON CABIN - NIGHT

Locking it up, he listens for a moment. LOOKING UP at the sky, BATS STREAK across it, SHRIEKING in the darkness. Something has stirred them. He starts back to the SUV, SCANNING the area with each step. A few feet away, a sense of calm in his eyes and-

    WHAM

Something THROWS him at his SUV. His body HITS the vehicle with such force that the window SHATTERS.

WIND KNOCKED from his breath, his GLASSES missing from his face. SCRAMBLING for his shotgun. Feeling around the darkness, nearly blind without his glasses-

    DOUGLASS POV-

Everythings BLURRED. SHROUDED in an eerie dark hue. Trying to control his breathing-

Something physically FLIPS his body over like a RAG DOLL. The bear toys with Douglass for a few moments as he tries to CRAWL away. Looking up at the TWINKLING yet BLURRY STARS-

A SILHOUETTE of a BEARS HEAD fills our POV as Massive eyes GLOWING right back into his.

    EXT. WOODS - NIGHT

CALMNESS followed by a single SCREAM thats cut off immediately.

EXT. HOUSE - NIGHT - LATER

SULLYGood to see you brothers together again.

Rowan WAVES goodbye as Sully pulls away.

    INT. SHERIFFS SUV - NIGHT

    His radio CHIRPS.

    32.

  • DEPUTY SMITH (V.O.)(static)

    Sheriff?

    SULLYYeah, go ahead.

    DEPUTY SMITH (V.O.)(static)

    Ive lost contact with Douglass.

SULLYDont worry about him. Hes probably drunk and passed out somewhere.

    INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Rowans sitting on the edge of the bed, eyeing the satellite phone in his hand, then his cell phone which still reads NO SERVICE. He dials his own number on the satellite phone, enters his voice-mail access code and listens-

    AUTOMATED VOICE (V.O.)You...have...one...new...message...received...two...hours...ago...

    JENNY (V.O.)(faint & injured)

    Help us....(static)

    Rowan?

The line goes dead. His eyes fall to the window as he stares out into the darkness.

    INT. HALLWAY - MORNING

Beckett, now sporting a nice SHINER from Rowan, stands with his ear pressed against the wall in the hallway. He listens for the DISTINCT sound of the shower turning on.

    INT. BEDROOM - MORNING

Beckett SLIPS in the room and eyes Kaley as she sleeps. He HEARS Rowan taking a shower. He looks for Rowans luggage and kneels down next to it. DIGGING through, he finds a stack of folders, binders and his work stuff. GRABBING all of it, Beckett slips back out of the room.

    INT. SHOWER - MORNING

Rowan lets the hot water course across his face as he gives a good stretch. Turning it off after a few moments, he steps out.

    33.

  • INT. BATHROOM - MORNING

Toweling off, he WIPES the foggy mirror as steam has filled the room. He reaches for the closet door, opening it as his eyes fall to the LARGE BEAR CUT-OUT thats STANDING right there in front of the towels-

HES STARTLED and JUMPS at the sight of it. Looking at it, he LAUGHS at himself.

For the first time, we see Rowan without his shirt. On his back are a series of SCARS. Deep GASHES that never fully healed. He turns to see them in the mirror. A painful reminder of when he was a kid.

    ROWAN(whispers)

    Fuck it.

Eyeing the mirror again, admiring his physique, he wraps a towel around his waist, he closes the towel closet and leaves the room.

    INT. BEDROOM - LATER

Rowan slips into a pair of jeans and a flannel shirt. Creeping over to the dresser, he eyes his beautiful sleeping Kaley. Opening the drawer, it CREAKS- Kaley STIRS and RUBS the sleep from her eyes.

    ROWAN(whispers)

    Morning baby.

    KALEY(groggy)

    What time is it?

    ROWANAbout seven-thirty.

He digs through the drawer full of socks and grabs a pair of specialized socks.

    KALEYSo early...

Rowan sits on the edge of the bed and drags the socks across her face playfully.

KALEY (CONTD)Awww, youre giving me socks?

ROWANSpecial socks. Thinsulate. They pull the water away from your skin.

    Kaley looks at him curiously.

    ROWAN (CONTD)I was thinking-

    KALEYUh-oh.

    34.

  • ROWAN(smiling)

That it might be fun to go on a two-day hike.

KALEYFor the win. All the begging to go camping.

(beat)Let me think about it. YES!

    (beat)I dont have any gear-

ROWANGo shower. Well swing by the sporting goods store.

She stands up wrapped in the sheet. He NODS and she disappears into the bathroom. He listens for the shower to turn on then picks up the phone and dials.

DOUGLASS (V.O.)Youve reached Douglass, you know what to do-

    BEEP

ROWANHey Douglass, Its Row. Listen, Im heading out to find them. Do me a favor, swing by Hamiltons Point in 48 hours. Lets say well be on the beach at dawn. Well pile into your boat and head back to the mainland.

    (beat)See you soon.

    He hangs up the phone.

    INT. LIBRARY/DEN - MORNING

Rowan walks into the room and goes behind the desk. Lining the walls are books and a huge gun cabinet. Opening a drawer, he searches for a key to the gun cabinet. Beckett stands in the doorway behind him.

BECKETTYou want to tell me why youre really here?

Rowan turns around and sees Beckett holding onto HIS folder. Beckett holds it up and there it is for us - the company logo-

    VAUGHN GEOLOGICAL

Mining For The Future of Tomorrow

    Rowan sinks into a chair.

    ROWANThings never change man.

    35.

  • BECKETTOh yeah they do. People as well.

(beat)What have you gotten yourself into?

(opening the folder)Who are these people - Jenny Eisenbarth, Ryan Jacobson, Collins-

ROWANEnough. You just couldnt let me be?

BECKETTIm your older brother. Tell me what is going on.

    ROWAN(thinking)

I had Douglass sneak them in to get some soil samples for the company. No big deal. Just didnt want to hassle with the protected lands act, paperwork or deal with all this- this-

    BECKETTThis life back here?

ROWANYeah. The company didnt want any political bullshit or hassles until they found something, if there is anything there.

    BECKETTIllegal land testing.

ROWANJesus Beckett. Were not hurting anyone here.

BECKETTNo. But it is a criminal offense. Douglass knows that, right?

Rowan shakes his head back and forth.

ROWANI wasnt honest with him. Hell do anything for money.

    BECKETTWhere are these people?

    ROWAN(hesitates)

I lost contact with them a week ago. I have no idea. Douglass has no idea.

BECKETTYouve got to be kidding me!

    36.

  • ROWANTheyre experienced in the woods. Im going to go find them. I know the terrain like the back of my hand. Just didnt want a massive circus out there looking.

    Becketts shaking his head.

ROWAN (CONTD)So what do you want to do Beckett?

Rowan makes two fists, holds his wrists together.

ROWAN (CONTD)Arrest me? Bring me in? Or turn your back on me again?

Beckett boils over and SWINGS at Rowan, connecting hard with his face as he STUMBLES backwards.

    ROWAN (CONTD)(rubbing his jaw)

Everyone knows what you did to this family! Now youre back here, living in our fucking house pretending that nothing happened.

Beckett LAUNCHES into Rowan. They WRESTLE and start THROWING PUNCHES.

    BECKETTShut the fuck up!

    INT. SHOWER - MORNING

Kaleys bouncing around the shower washing her hair as music plays on the radio.

    INT. LIBRARY/DEN - MORNING

Beckett BODY SLAMS Rowan on the desk as Rowan GRABS a LAMP and SMASHES it against Becketts head, slightly disorienting him.

    INT. DINING ROOM - MORNING

Michelle reads the paper and drinks her coffee. She eyes the stirring spoon on the table as it RATTLES a little with all the commotion she cant hear. She SHRUGS it off and continues reading.

    INT. LIBRARY/DEN - MORNING

The room looks like a tornado has ripped through it. Rowan PUSHES Beckett hard towards a BOOKCASE as the force BREAKS a few of the shelves. CLIMBING to his feet, Beckett tears at him like a bull and THROWS Rowan across the room.

    37.

  • Landing on the floor, Rowan GRABS whats closest to him, a framed photo of their family together, about to SWING, he stops while eyeing the picture in his hand.

He THROWS it towards Beckett, and YELLS in ANGER as the picture SMASHES against the wall and SHATTERS. He CHARGES Beckett again. Beckett PINS HIM DOWN.

    BECKETT(out of breath)

    Hold on!

The two of them stop. Completely WINDED.

    ROWANOld man!

    BECKETTIll help you.

    STRUGGLING to get free.

ROWANI dont need you. Havent needed you in years.

BECKETTYou do right now. You need me on your side. You cant do this.

    (beat)On your own.

ROWANNo other deputies. No telling Sully.

BECKETTIm not going to. Well head out together. Four eyes are better than two.

    ROWANSix. Kaleys coming as well.

    BECKETTDoes she know?

ROWANAbsolutely not. But if one of thems injured out there...

    BECKETTSmart. Shes a doctor.

(beat)Ill talk to Michelle. Shes good in the woods and can help us track.

Beckett zeroes in on the gun case, he opens it and pulls out two 7 mm Remington Magnum rifles and a Smith & Wesson Model 500 .50-Cal. Magnum with a scope. He slings the rifles.

Michelle POKES her head into the room and looks at the destruction.

    38.

  • Rowan GRABS a tissue and JAMS it into his bleeding nose. She stands there with her arms crossed, a bit nonplussed. Beckett SIGNS to her and she NODS, SIGNING back. She turns around, with a little smile and walks out.

BECKETT (CONTD)Shes going to go pack.

Becketts about to head out of the room.

BECKETT (CONTD)I also asked her NOT to mention your missing people to Kaley. Well deal with it when we cross that bridge.

Rowan stares at his brother. Wanting to say thanks but holds it back. Beckett leaves the room. First step in rebuilding their relationship.

    INT. BATHROOM - MORNING

Kaley sits on the toilet and stares at the third pregnancy test. POSITIVE. She digs through the waste basket and pulls out the other positive one from last night. Staring at the two positives. She BURIES both of them and eyes her belly in the mirror for a moment. She leaves the bathroom.

    INT. BEDROOM - MORNING

    Kaley finishes getting dressed.

    INT. DINING ROOM - MORNING

Rowans finishing up putting his rifle together. The bruised and bloodied brothers are working in sync. A rhythm between them.

    BECKETTWhat are you thinking?

ROWANI know what section of the grid theyre in.

    BECKETTTwo days enough?

ROWANDefinitely. Well run across my people. Piece of cake.

BECKETTI called into the station. Told Sully I needed a couple personal days. Maybe we need more to backtrack-

    39.

  • ROWANLeft word with Douglass to pick us up at Hamiltons Point. Were covering their route pretty thoroughly, no reason to go back.

Kaley walks into the room and sits down. She looks at the two of them, beaten to shit.

    KALEYEverything good?

The brothers share a moment. Silence. Still tense.

KALEY (CONTD)Guess youre working on it.

Michelle carries a few bowls of oatmeal in the room. Kaley picks up one of the 7 mm cartridges.

    KALEY (CONTD)Holy hell.

    ROWANThatll destroy a deer.

KALEYThought we were just camping. Im not one for killing Bambi.

Beckett SIGNS what she just said to Michelle. She nods and HIGH-FIVES Kaley.

    ROWANIts for protection baby.

Kaley SIGNS and Michelle NODS in agreement.

Rowan finishes assembling his rifle and checks the bolt action. Kaley picks up a pair of MILITARY GOGGLES with a head strap-

    KALEYWhat are these?

BECKETTSouvenir from Iraq. PVS-7 head mounted starlight night vision goggles.

Beckett holds up the SMITH & WESSON, spins the cylinder. Michelle SIGNS-

KALEYDirty Harry. You can say that again.

Kaley SIGNS- asking her if she knows how to use the gun?

NODDING, Michelle takes the weapon, CHECKS to make sure the cylinders empty, SPINS it once, CLOSES it, COCKS it and AIMS away from them- CLICK. She brings the barrel close to her lips and BLOWS.

    40.

  • INT. SHERIFFS VEHICLE - MORNING

Sullys cruising down the road, passing by MILLS SPORTING GOODS and sees Beckett loading his vehicle as Kaley, Michelle and Rowan walk out with merchandise.

He pulls in just as a DARK BLUE F-350 with rust spots all over it PEELS out of the parking lot. Sully eyes the two shady looking men in the cab.

EXT. MILLS SPORTING GOODS - MORNING

Rowans got a SATELLITE PHONE up to his ear and turns to see Sully drive in.

ROWAN...Alright man, youve got our number. Let me know when you get this message.

(beat)Shit, Beckett... Sullys pulling into the lot.

He HANGS UP and slips the phone into one of the packs.

    BECKETTI got this.

Sully gets out of his vehicle and walks over as they finish loading up. Kaley looks over and smiles.

    SULLYMorning guys.

(to Kaley)You must be Rowans girl.

KALEYRowan talks about you nonstop, Sully!

    SULLYDoes he now?

Sully eyes Beckett SIGNING to Michelle as he pulls back and WAVES to her and SIGNS. Sullys a bit RUSTY. Michelle SIGNS back and he smiles.

    BECKETTNot too bad, Sully!

SULLYHow do I say, Im practicing?

Beckett SIGNS to her and she NODS.

SULLY (CONTD)Looks like a camping trip.

BECKETTRows idea. Were gonna do the touristy thing - unload at the visitors center and hike in.

    41.

  • SULLYReally?

    Rowan NODS.

ROWANKaleys here, its a special trip.

    (beat)Where you off to?

SULLYDouglass place. Old coot went and ditched Gerry in the woods last night. Gonna cite him. Make sure he knows that hes part of this community. Needs a reminder once in a while.

ROWANIts getting late. We should get going.

    SULLYHave a good time.

They all get in their vehicles and drive away.

Their vehicle flies past the VISITORS AREA sign and driveway while continuing way farther down road.

    EXT. DIRT ROAD - DAY

The Forerunner VEERS onto the dirt road from the main as bush branches BRUSH against the side. Kaley looks out the back window as they leave civilization.

    INT. FORERUNNER - DAY

Kaley slightly HUNCHES over and CLUTCHES her stomach. She eyes the SIGNAL on her cell phone as it drops completely.

    ROWANYou okay, baby?

    KALEYThe oatmeal.

(beat)So whereabouts are we? My phone lost-

BECKETTSignal? Nature doesnt allow cell phones out here.

    Beckett eyes the rearview mirror.

    42.

  • BECKETT (CONTD)Just above the maze. Theres an open patch about three miles in where we can ditch the Forerunner.

    Kaley looks out the window.

    EXT. WILDERNESS - DAY

    The Forerunner leaves civilization behind.

EXT. HIGHWAY SHOULDER - DAY - LATER

Rowan stands on the side of the road and takes a leak. Everyone else is stretching as Kaley SNAPS a photo with her instant camera. Beckett SIGNS to Michelle and she LAUGHS and NODS.

BECKETTMy brother has the smallest bladder in the world.

Kaley LAUGHS. Zipping up, he runs over to them. Kaley TURNS to STEP out on the road just as a LOGGER SEMI TRUCK FLIES passed them. RATTLED by the SPEED, Rowan pulls her back.

    KALEYJeezus, slow the hell down.

ROWANSorry babe- forgot to warn you about the logging trucks that fly down these roads day and night.

KALEYNight too? Who logs at night?

BECKETTIllegal loggers. Dangerous but profitable. Weve got a real problem with it up here.

ROWANCutters clear an area in the middle of the night, trucks come in during the day and roll the trees out.

BECKETTThis is a global problem, not just here in Alaska. Screws all wildlife and habitats up.

Beckett checks the tire pressure on the wheels.

    ROWANLets get a move on.

    They all hop back inside.

    43.

  • EXT. FIRE ROAD - EARLY AFTERNOON

The vehicle is half-unloaded. Rowan and Beckett stare at a MAP as its SPRAWLED out across the hood of the SUV. Theyre debating the route. Michelle SNAPS a few pictures. Kaley peeks over their shoulders.

KALEYI want to see everything beautiful.

    ROWAN(sarcastic)

    Thats helpful.

Michelle SIGNS to Kaley as she goes over, out of earshot to help Michelle out.

    BECKETT(pointing to the map)

Alright, we trail down through here, set up camp for the night, tomorrow we venture a bit inward and then camp in the exterior tomorrow night. About a three mile hike from the beach.

Rowans looking at the map, holding his thoughts back. Making sure Kaley doesnt hear this.

    BECKETT (CONTD)What are you thinking?

    ROWAN(hesitant)

    I sent them off grid.

    BECKETT(surprised)

    You did what?

ROWANThe protected area. Thats where they were testing. I sent them into the back country.

Beckett ROLLS his eyes, hes a bit pissed.

BECKETTBy the waterfall? Puts us way off course. Uncharted.

Rowan NODS. Kaleys ears perk up.

KALEYOoooh, I wanna see a waterfall! Please oh please, ooooohhhh pleeeease? How far in total?

BECKETTA little more than eleven miles from hip to hilt.

    KALEYShit, I can hike that!

    44.

  • ROWANWhoa, calm down there Forrest Gump. This terrain is hard. Figure a mile every two hours.

    Michelle SIGNS-

BECKETTMichelle thinks she can handle it.

    Kaley SIGNS -

Thank you. Michelle NODS. Beckett and Rowan start unloading the vehicle as Kaley STRETCHES out. She and Michelle SIGN to each other. Grabbing several CANTEENS, Beckett fills them with their gallon jugs of water.

ROWANHow many times you and Michelle been out here?

BECKETTMaybe a dozen. She loves it out here.

Rowan pulls out the 4 MASSIVE BACK-PACKS with down sleeping bags attached. Kaley GRABS her backpack after Rowan finishes PACKING it with equipment. Beckett grabs the FLARES & FLARE GUN jams them into Michelles pack.

BECKETT (CONTD)Who gets the first-aid kit?

KALEYI do-of course. Probably the only one qualified to use this, lets see what weve got--

(opening it)Band-aids, some condoms, Pop-Tarts and a fork.

(holding it up)Im not gonna ask.

    ROWANGood idea.

Beckett checks his NIGHT VISION GOGGLES before SHOVING them in his pack. Michelle SIGNS-

KALEYSo you guys just fork around in the woods?

    Kaley air applauds her joke.

ROWANShes funny! Why is such a beautiful and witty girl with you?

Beckett SIGNS to Michelle what Rowan said about her and she smiles. Michelle SIGNS-

    45.

  • BECKETTTheres Neosporin in there too and some other things!

Kaley pulls out a small pack from inside the SUV. She unzips it revealing hospital-grade medical supplies. Michelle SIGNS-

BECKETT (CONTD)Guess the Doctor is in...

She SPINS around as he UNZIPS a compartment and he SLIPS it in. Michelle grabs a couple camera cases and attaches them onto her pack.

Rowan picks up a rifle, SNAPS it into his pack as Beckett does the same. Beckett grabs the SMITH & WESSON, caps the scope, places it in its holster and STRAPS it on himself. Rowan helps Beckett put his heavier pack on as he reciprocates. Michelle SIGNS as Kaley LAUGHS.

    ROWANWhats that about?

KALEYOhhh, Michelle just made fun of you two, helping each other put your packs on like two little girls-

ROWANWe can always trade, babe. Ours weigh about seventy pounds each.

    Kaley SIGNS that to Michelle.

    KALEYOops.

Beckett grabs the cartridge boxes and hands one to Rowan before shutting the back gate. BECKETT POCKETS THE CAR KEYS. Michelle SNAPS another photo of the three of them. She checks her COMPASS and SIGNS-

    BECKETTLead the way Grizzly Casanova.

    (beat)Thats cute. Real cute.

He politely SIGNS for her to KISS HIS ASS. Kaley LAUGHS at their inside joke. Michelle BLOWS him a KISS.

    ROWANWhatd he say?

Beckett leads them down the fire road.

    KALEYNever mind.

EXT. FIRE ROAD - DAY - SHORT TIME LATER

Kaley looks around the tiny dirt road.

    46.

  • KALEYWhat kind of road is this? Weve been on it a while.

ROWANGirdlers fire road. For local access. This is the main one.

Michelle SIGNS to Beckett and POINTS AHEAD.

BECKETTLooks like weve got another vehicle up ahead.

Walking past it, Rowan peers in and sees a folder on the backseat tucked halfway under other stuff with VAUGHN GEOLOGICAL partially exposed. He eyes Beckett. Theyre on the right trail.

INT. WILDERNESS - DAY - HOURS LATER

They are in the thick of it. Walls of jagged rocks and green surround them. Michelle and Beckett are about ten yards ahead as Rowan and Kaley lag behind. Beckett SIGNS to Michelle and she NODS.

KALEYWhat are the two of you up to?

    Beckett turns around.

    BECKETTRules of the woods.

    KALEYOh, god -- more rules?

    Michelle SIGNS as Beckett TRANSLATES-

BECKETTFirst rule of the woods is...

    ROWAN(whispers)

You dont talk about the woods.

    Kaley laughs.

BECKETTAlways respect your surroundings. Rule number two nothings left behind.

Beckett SIGNS his response and Michelle LAUGHS.

BECKETT (CONTD)I mean if youre done with something, even an apple core, you must-

    ROWAN/BECKETTBURY IT.

    47.

  • KALEYIts biodegradable-

BECKETTIts so the animals dont smell it. We dont want anything picking up our scent & track us. That includes trips to the ladies room. You pop a hot squat, kick some dirt over and bury it.

ROWANNice visual there, Beckett. Who says that?

Kaley takes a SWIG from her canteen.

BECKETTAnd most importantly...If you see an animal, any animal, make sure it sees you.

    KALEYWhat if its a bear?

BECKETTProtect your neck. They love necks.

KALEYReally? Are you fucking with me?

    ROWANA little.

BECKETTIf its a bear, you need to make sure IT knows that you know that he sees you.

Beckett stops for a moment, turns around to face Kaley-

BECKETT (CONTD)You slowly back up like this-

He takes a few steps backwards. Kaley does the same, NOT realizing Rowan is SNEAKING UP behind her.

BECKETT (CONTD)Never take your eyes off of it. Dont blink. Show respect. If he closes in, find a branch

(picks one up)Raise it high above your head like this...

(he raises it)Makes you seem taller--

    KALEYThen what?

She continues to back up- Rowan GRABS her from BEHIND as she SCREAMS-

    48.

  • ROWANPray theres not two of them.

    KALEY(YELLS)

    Asshole!

ROWANBut you love me any way.

She KISSES him as Michelle and Beckett HIGH-FIVE each other.

BECKETTBut those rules only apply to a black bear.

    KALEYWhat if its a grizzly?

Rowan and Beckett eye each other.

BECKETTDo whatever you can and run-

ROWANAnd remember to run fast. Bears can reach about twenty-five miles per hour and sustain that.

Beckett pulls out his GPS-RFID device.

    KALEYWhats that?

BECKETTI use it to track animals that have been tagged. Its a global park service initiative.

KALEYSo if somethings in our presence-

BECKETTYup. Itll pop up on here.

Michelle SNAPS a picture of them.

    INT. CLEAR-CUT AREA - DAY - LATER

They emerge from the woods and look around at all the devastation with trees that have been cut.

    KALEYJesus.

BECKETTDeforestation at its finest. They roll in here, empty it out, and move on.

    49.

  • ROWANAll the animals pay the price.

    Kaley CLUTCHES her STOMACH again.

KALEYOyyyy...I have to hit the ladies room.

    ROWANAlready?

KALEYWeve been hiking for five hours.

Beckett SIGNS to Michelle and she NODS. Walking over to Kaley, she takes her by the hand. Michelle SIGNS-

    BECKETTWell be right back.

ROWANDont they say that in horror movies?

    KALEYReal cute Rowan!

    The two disappear.

    EXT. BRUSH AREA - DAY

Michelle leads Kaley into a small open area out of range of the boys.

ROWAN (O.C.)Be sure not to use the poisonous leaves.

She SIGNS what he just said.

    KALEY(yells)

    Which ones?

    BECKETT (O.C.)The green ones!

Michelle takes her pack off, unzips a pocket and pulls out two rolls of toilet paper. Handing one to Kaley-

    Kaley SIGNS-

    KALEYThanks.

Michelle smiles and disappears into the brush. Kaley drops her pack and walks the opposite way.

    50.

  • INT. SMALL WOODED AREA - DAY

Kaleys SQUATTING, her head shifts from side to side with every little noise. A little bit uneasy. Its almost like being in the middle of an ocean without a raft.

    INT. MICHELLES AREA - DAY

Michelle finishes up. She starts to walk away as something catches her eye. She stops. Waits. She INHALES deeply. Something different. Not their scent. She looks around. Her sixth sense acute-

A FLOCK of BIRDS get spooked and EXPLODE from the woods nearby and fly overhead. Moments pass and she finally moves on. Her WATCH begins BEEPING.

    INT. WOODS - DAY

    ANGLE ON-

Beckett and Rowan, KNEELING on the ground as they eye the map. Kaley BOUNCES out of the woods with Michelle. Kaley POINTS to her watch and Michelle annoyingly turns it off again.

KALEYOMG, we dont know where we are...

    BECKETTWe do-

ROWANPay no attention to her. Shes addicted to LOST.

Kaley SIGNS to Michelle. She responds...

    KALEYHer too. Sawyers her favorite.

Michelle FAKE HUGS herself as if Sawyers in her arms. Beckett stands up. He SIGNS-

BECKETTWeve got about an hour before dusk. Say we head up to Dads Flat.

    Michelle agrees.

KALEYFlat? I thought we were roughing it!

Beckett folds up the map as they continue on.

    KALEY (CONTD)Rowan?

    51.

  • ROWANDads Flat is cool. Youll see.

Rowan trails behind the three of them. They disappear in the brush ahead. He STOPS for a moment and looks back. Eyes DARTING back and forth. The CRACK of a tree branch ECHOES in the distance. BIRDS FLY overhead. Nothing. He pushes on.

    EXT. WIDE-OPEN FLATLAND - LATER - DUSK

Beckett and company break through a wall of wilderness brush into a clearing that seems to go on forever. The wall TOWERS behind them as Kaley looks back.

The dried out GRASS-COVERED land is about waist high. MOUNTAIN TERRAIN looms in the distance. Kaleys mouth DROPS at the sight.

    ROWANWelcome to Dads Flat.

    KALEYIm without words.

    Beckett SIGNS-

BECKETTMichelle was the same way her first time here.

    Michelle NODS and SIGNS-

BECKETT (CONTD)Why dont you take her to dads rock. Well set up the tents.

    (to Michelle)We will?

She smiles and takes off her pack. Rowan looks around, soaking it in. It has been several years since he was here.

    ROWANThanks. Come on Kaley-

Kaley and Rowan drop theirs and walk away.

    BECKETT(yells)

Grab some wood for the fire on your way back.

Rowan WAVES without turning back. Beckett SIGNS-

BECKETT (CONTD)Youre gonna help me with this...

Michelle doesnt respond as she steps to the edge of the camp and looks out over the landscape, sensing something.

    52.

  • EXT. DADS ROCK - DUSK

Kaley and Rowan climb atop this MASSIVE ROCK thats flat on top. Standing there for a moment, they take in the SHEER DROP below them.

    KALEYHoly god!

She CLINGS to Rowan while PEEKING over the edge and looks at the BLANKET of TREES and WOODS five-hundred feet below.

KALEY (CONTD)What is that below us?

    ROWANThats the Grizzly Maze.

    KALEYIs it really called that?

ROWANIts known as that now, but growing up we called it the Interior.

KALEYWere going to go down there tomorrow?

    ROWAN(shaking his head)

Its uncharted. Theres an approximation to certain zones of it, but the terrain is beyond difficult. Almost suicide to travel through there.

(beat)Definitely not some place that you want to spend the night. Were close to the edge, so well circle around tomorrow by the exterior.

They sit down on the rock.

KALEYKind of takes your breath away.

ROWANIts been a long time. Last time we were here together was with dad.

    (Nodding backwards)Beckett enlisted and left.

She looks back in the distance, watches Beckett and Michelle putting up the tents. He SMOOCHES her forehead. She WRAPS her arms around him and embrace the calm. He looks at her, knowing that shes holding something back.

EXT. BONFIRE - NIGHT - LATER

The couples are snuggled up as Rowan adjusts the burning logs. Kaley DIGS through her pack and pulls out the satellite phone and eyes it.

    53.

  • ROWANSorry. My pack was full.

She JAMS it back in her pack. Michelle SIGNS to Beckett and he laughs a little.

BECKETTYeah, we had fun with our dad up here.

Quiet rolls over them. Kaley SIGNS-

KALEYIm sorry, Rowans never talked much about him.

BECKETTThats about where life ended, right Row? After dads accident?

Kaley stares. Confused. Rowan looks at the ground as Beckett SIGNS-

ROWANJesus Christ! He didnt have an accident Beckett. For fucks sake, he killed himself. Admit the truth.

(beat)He couldnt deal with our mom dying a slow death. He took the easy way out.

Rowans eyes are daggers. There it is. All of what this is about. Kaleys uncomfortable the for the first time. Beckett SIGNS to Michelle and she reacts, hearing the truth for the first time. Tears in her eyes.

    BECKETTYoure right. He committed suicide.

Beckett looks away, finally admitting the truth to himself.

    ROWANThen you left.

    Tension.

BECKETTI did. And now were here.

Rowan gets up and climbs into his tent. Kaley stares into the uncomfortable night as Beckett KISSES Michelles forehead while processing.

Moments pass as Kaley stares into the darkness. Not really sure of the proper etiquette here. Her ears PERK UP. Looking around-

    BECKETT (CONTD)What?

    54.

  • KALEYThought I heard...sssshhhh-

    She looks over her shoulder.

    KALEY (CONTD)The buzzing stopped. Weird.

    (beat)Good night Beckett.

Kaley gets up and heads to their tent. She looks inside, Rowans already asleep. She climbs in.

    EXT. CLEAR-CUT AREA - NIGHT

The dark blue F-350 super duty pick-up is parked in the cleared area. This is an illegal logging site that is is nestled in the woods. The sound of a CHAIN SAW REVS UP in the distance.

    ANGLE ON-

PATRICK, 30s, dressed like a lumberjack with a helmet light on as he finishes up pissing in the bushes.

MARCUS (O.C.)Dammit, Patrick, would you hurry the fuck up and go cut them trees down?

He ZIPS UP and SPINS around as MARCUS, 30s, also dressed in a flannel and jeans as he carries over a Husqvarna 395XP Chainsaw with 36" Bar and Chain. He REVS it a couple times.

PATRICKShut the fuck up Marcus. Why you always tellin me go cut this, go cut that? All you do is carry that beast around and pretend youre logging.

Marcus REVS it again, STICKING his TONGUE OUT, mocking him.

MARCUSI can cut shit faster than you.

Patrick LAUGHS at him and walks the other direction.

    PATRICKLets race!

Going to their respective corners, they each start in on wedging a tree with their chain saws. Marcus keeps looking over his shoulder to see how far Patrick is getting. Its fairly loud. BITING his glove, he positions the chain saw on his thigh and JAMS the glove in the trigger so he can pull out a CIGARETTE.

LIGHTING UP, hes impressed with his own skills. Continuing to really DIG IN and finish the job, right about to finish, he looks back at Patrick and sees his chain saw still running and JAMMED in the tree, bouncing around, but Patrick is NOWHERE in sight.

    55.

  • MARCUSWhat the hell?

Setting his chain saw he walks over towards Patricks tree, chain saw in hand, eyeing the situation-

ROUNDING the corner of the tree, he sees the abandoned machine wedged in the trunk, GRINDING away and Patricks SEVERED HAND and FOREARM on the trigger. BLOOD DRIPPING from it with BONE JUTTING OUT. SHOCK & AWE consuming Marcus as the cigarette FALLS OUT of his mouth. TURNING to RUN, a huge CLAW SWIPES at Marcus-

DECAPITATING him completely as his head BOUNCES into the woods nearby as his BLOODY HELMET SMASHES against the tree and the light goes OUT.

EXT. DOUGLASS HUNTING LODGE - NIGHT

    Establishing.

POLICE CRUISERS parked all over with their LIGHTS FLASHING, a CORONORS VAN PULLS INTO the main driveway. DEPUTIES scattered about on their radios.

    EXT. HONEYMOON CABIN - NIGHT

Sully walks around the side of Douglass truck and eyes the damage and blood a FORENSICS TECH, 40s, snaps photos and processes the scene.

    SULLYPoor bastard.

    FORENSICS TECHCan say that again.

(beat)Looks like the initial impact was here, down he goes and then crawled-

The tech points east towards the cabin.

FORENSICS TECH (CONTD)Look at these imprints.

They pace along the bloody trail.

SULLYThats a good fifteen feet from ground zero. Almost like the bear was watching him try & escape. Not a natural characteristic.

The coroner WHEELS a loaded BODY BAG by thats DRIPPING with blood.

INT. TENT - JUST BEFORE SUNRISE

    ANGLE ON-

    56.

  • Michelles face-PRESSED close to the edge of the nylon tent... Something BUMPS her face. Opening her eyes, she sees TWO SMALL PAWS pressed against the tent. Rolling over, Becketts SNORING. She quietly rolls out of her sleeping bag, slips out of the tent with her camera.

    EXT. TENT - SUNRISE

Pre dawn mist blankets the landscape. Michelle PEERS around the side and sees a little FOX. The animal has its paws pressed up against the tent. She SNAPS a photo and it stares curiously at the BLOOD STAINS the fox has left with its paws on the tent.

She SNAPS a few more and it slowly BOUNCES away playfully. Michelle grabs her hiking boots, slipping them on, she follows the fox into the waist-high grass.

    INT. GRASS FIELD

Michelle glides through the mist, staying a few feet behind the fox as it seems to be leading her somewhere. She SNIFFS the air. Somethings triggered her nose. The smell gets stronger. Almost unbearable. COVERING her nose- Moments pass as they enter a small clearing.

    INT. CLEARING

Michelle stops and lowers her camera. Taking a few more steps, athe GROUND GIVES WAY and she DROPS SEVERAL FEET into what seems to be a sinkhole.

Trying to get free, she looks down at her feet and sees the TORN UP RIB CAGE of a bear. ***(Bears generally bury carcasses for future eating in their kill zones.)

UNABLE to scream at her horror, she STRUGGLES to CLIMB out of the shallow grave.

    BEEP BEEP BEEP

Something behind her. She turns to see Beckett as he GRABS her wrist and turns off the watch and he DRAGS HER OUT of the grave. The mist clears and Michelle points to the fury mass of a dead Grizzly.

    INT. CLEARING - DAWN

Rowan and Beckett enter the clearing and stare at the REMAINS of a GRIZZLY BEAR CARCASS. White tips on its hairs give it a grizzled appearance. Its face is dish shaped in profile, and it has a distinct hump at the shoulder. Its front claws are covered in blood. This bear was ATTACKED.

    ROWANJesus!

Beckett circles the bear with his RFID machine. Nothing indicates its one of his. He turns the machine off.

    57.

  • BECKETTThis had to have been about a thousand pounds.

    ROWANOr more. Big bear.

The bears been eaten through. Beckett uses his foot to push over whats left of the bears head and there are several CLAW MARKS that have TORN through its neck.

    BECKETTLook at these wounds.

    ROWANPoachers?

    BECKETTNo bullet entries.

ROWANCant be more than a few days old, Beckett.

    (beat)Something big killed this.

BECKETTWe need to pack up. Make sure nothings left behind.

    Rowan agrees.

ROWANDont say anything to Kaley about this.

    BECKETTAbout last night-

Rowan walks away ignoring his brother.

    INT. TENT - MORNING

Rowan SLIPS into his tent as Kaley wakes up.

    KALEYWhat is it, baby?

ROWANWeve got a long hike in front of us today. Early start.

She NODS her head and WIPES the sleep from her eyes. Rowan UNHOOKS the rifle from his pack and LOADS it while LATCHING the BOLT ACTION. Kaley just looks at him.

ROWAN (CONTD)Beckett thought he saw a wolf this morning sniffing just outside the campsite.

    KALEYOh-

    58.

  • He leaves the tent with his pack.

INT. CAMPSITE - MORNING - LATER

Beckett and Rowan finish cleaning up the fire pit as the girls put their packs on. The guys WHISPER to each other.

    Michelle SIGNS-

    KALEY(agreeing)

Yeah, what are you two discussing?

    ROWANWhere wed hide your bodies.

    Kaley SIGNS-

    KALEYReal cute Rowan!

Everythings packed up. Kaley grabs their GPS monitor-

KALEY (CONTD)Can I carry this today?

    Michelle SIGNS.

BECKETTRight... men dont have a sense of direction.

Beckett NODS and Kaley slips the GPS into her pack.

BECKETT (CONTD)Lets head to the stream. Were taking a shortcut to the waterfall.

    INT. MORGUE - MORNING

The room is cold with white-tiles and a metal table at the center. A few refrigerated body lockers are on the back wall. Sully walks through with a cup of coffee in hand and is immediately sickened by the smell as the MILAM the MEDICAL EXAMINER, 50s, HOVERS over the remains of Douglass.

M.E. MILAMTheres some vapo-rub on the counter.

Sully sets the cup down and GRABS the jar, SMEARING a bit under his nose.

    SULLYThanks Milam. Dont help much.

    Milam NODS in agreement.

M.E. MILAMBear attack. Alrady made a call to the Alaskan Science Center.

    59.

  • A specialist is en route. A day or two.

    SULLYYeah, what else?

M.E. MILAMLook close at this gash-

REACHING for a ruler, he measures.

SULLYBloody-disgusting. What am I looking at?

M.E. MILAMThis measurement is large. Ive been comparing it to other attacks. Were talking nine-inch front claws.

(beat)What little bone is left here, its not just crushed but pulverized.

SULLYWhat kind of size are we talking about here?

M.E. MILAMIm still crunching numbers but-

    SULLYBallpark.

M.E. MILAMEight-hundred kilograms. Give or take.

    SULLYNot a very heavy grizzly.

M.E. MILAMThats metric. Im talking seventeen hundred pounds of Kodiak Grizzly bear. Its a subspecies of Grizzly. More dangerous.

    Sully soaks it in.

SULLYNever heard a bear that big.

M.E. MILAMOne clocked in years ago, grown in captivity no less and weighed almost nineteen hundred pounds. Now think, that had a regulated feeding schedule. The Kodiak out there, responsible for this mess, with unlimited feeding...

(beat)Thats damn near four-thousand three hundred pounds per square inch of bone crushing jaws.

He turns around and walks away in silence.

    60.M.E. MILAM (CONT'D)

  • M.E. MILAM (CONTD)Ill call when the specialist arrives.

Sully waves as he leaves the room.

INT. SHERIFFS OFFICE - MORNING - LATER

Sully sits at his desk and types away on his computer. On the screen is a DEATH REPORT that hes filling out. Under CAUSE OF DEATH he types in: KODIAK BEAR ATTACK.

KNOCK KNOCK. He looks up. Gerrys standing in the door. Sully RUBS his eyes.

DEPUTY SMITHDispatch just got a call from the Ranger Service. Something about illegal logging. Ive got Zoe en route.

    He stands up.

    SULLYAlright, lets go.

Sully eyes an envelope of receipts that Gerrys clutching.

SULLY (CONTD)What do you have there?

DEPUTY SMITHJust some receipts from Douglass glove box.

Gerry hands them over to Sully as he SHOVES them in his back pocket.

    INT. WOODS - LATER

Kaleys keeping pace with Rowan as he stews over last night. Silence for a few moments as she just watches his face.

    KALEYWell-

    ROWANWell what?

KALEYThat was a good talk. I feel like you really opened up the past hour.

    ROWANI didnt say anything-

    KALEYExactly.

She picks up her pace and makes way towards Beckett several meters ahead. She JOGS up to Beckett and Michelle.

    61.

  • Kaley SIGNS to her and Michelle NODS, slows her pace and heads back to Rowan.

BECKETTHe didnt send you up here.

    KALEYNo. Im a pro-active girl.

    Beckett forces an uncomfortable smile.

BECKETTGuess he never talked about our dad killing himself.

KALEYUnchecked baggage. I had no idea. He just would elude to him leaving like you did.

    BECKETTI deserve that comparison.

(beat)At the time, I just couldnt deal with it. After his death, mom took a turn for the worse. You have to understand that Im trying to make things right.

    KALEYYou two thinking about kids?

    BECKETTWere trying. A lot.

    (beat)You and Row?

Kaley thinks with her poker face.

BECKETT (CONTD)My little brother, hed be a good dad.

    KALEYOh yeah?

    She smiles.

KALEY (CONTD)You need to tell him that.

    BECKETTThink so?

    She NODS.

    EXT. CLEAR-CUT - DAY

Gerry and Zoe are TAGGING the chain saws as evidence. Sully is over talking to a FOREST RANGER and a DNR REPRESENTATIVE. The CORONER VAN is being loaded with the remains.

    62.

  • D.N.R. AGENTYou have our full cooperation. This will be completely shut down.

    SULLYThank you.

FOREST RANGERWell issue an alert and get it to the local media. Weve already notified the surrounding communities.

    A HELICOPTER FLIES OVERHEAD.

FOREST RANGER (CONTD)Thank God camping season hasnt started, no ones in the back country yet. Looks as though most of the public parks are clear according to the aerial sweeps.

    SULLY(looking back at Gerry)

    Any word from Beckett?

    Gerry SHAKES his head.

FOREST RANGERDont worry Sully. Well find Beckett. We have several public grids left to sweep.

Sully walks away as the envelope FALLS OUT of his back pocket. Sully eyes the receipts that have spilled out. He scans them. Zoe and Gerry approach him.

SULLYTwo dome tents, three Crestrail packs, three thermarest sleeping bags, headlamps, blah blah, satellite phone, gps...

DEPUTY SMITHWe found nothing like that at Douglass place.

Looking at the date on the receipt.

SULLYThis receipt is from two weeks ago.

    (beat)Pull his phone records.

    DEPUTY SMITHWhy?

SULLYHe didnt buy this stuff for himself. Hes hiding something.

ZOEProbably wont get this till morning-

    63.

  • SULLYWhatever it takes.

    EXT. STREAM - DAY

The group emerges from a thick wooded area as Kaleys eyes light up with the sight of a long flowing stream. Its about a hundred feet across and flowing at a good clip.

KALEYO-M-G thats beautiful. How far does this stream go?

Michelle looks at Kaley curiously as she SIGNS-

O-M-G then SPELLS out what it means. Michelle laughs at her new phrase.

BECKETTCouple miles. Well follow it up and cut across where it narrows.

    KALEYThis is so pretty.

FAR OFF in the distance, a HELICOPTER FLIES and we hear the faint THUP THUP THUP. Beckett and Rowan look up at the skies.

BECKETTRangers flying a training exercise Im sure.

EXT. STREAM - DAY - LATER

The group stands in the knee-deep water with their pants rolled up high and their shoes off. Kaley SCOOPS a handful of water and THROWS it at Rowan as everyone LAUGHS.

Michelle SNAPS photos of everyone having a good time. She stops for a moment and STARES at the woods on the opposite side. Michelle SIGNS and SNIFFS the air.

    ROWANWhat is it?

    KALEYI dont know...something about death?

BECKETTShe says it smells like death.

Kaley eyes Michelle as she awkwardly keeps a secret. In the distance ahead, on the OPPOSITE side and way upstream, a young BEAR CUB SAUNTERS out of the wooded area.

    KALEYRowan, look-

    64.

  • She points ahead. They all stop. Michelle raises her camera.

KALEY (CONTD)You said there were no bears this time of year-

    BECKETTThe drought. Made salmon scarce.

    KALEYI dont understand.

ROWANSometimes this happens. The bears have to push until the very edge of winter to find food.

    KALEYWheres its mama?

The bear cub BOUNCES over to the stream bank, climbing up on some small rocks, it looks into the flowing stream and SPLASHES the water searching for food.

Michelle stops taking pictures and TAPS Beckett on his shoulder. He looks at her as she NODS at the wooded area. Overhead, BIRDS FLY AWAY as if something has SPOOKED them.

    There it is.

    THE RED MACHINE

The bear stands on its massive hind legs, SCRATCHING its back on the wooded brush. Towering above them like King-Kong. [To put this in perspective, the bear could easily look into the second floor window of a two-story house.]

ROWANThats gotta be fifteen feet tall.

Everyone turns to stare at the monster. The bear DROPS to all FOURS and walks slowly over to the cub. The bear never takes its eyes off of the group.

    BECKETTRowan-

Approaching the cub, the bear SNIFFS the little guy. The bear watches the little cub search for food to no avail.

In the blink of an eye, the bear SWATHS the cub down as it SCREAMS in pain. Half in the water, half out, the bear ATTACKS the cub, and DEVOURS it.

    KALEY(terrified)

    Oh, my god-

TEARING at the cubs flesh like a Happy Meal, BLOOD SPRAYING everywhere, the bear SNACKS on the little one while keeping EYES on the
