2011 TEam Guide

C O R T L A N D

In 2010, the Cortland field hockey team earned its 12th straight trip to the NCAA Division III playoffs, finishing tied for ninth nationally with a 16-5 record. The Red Dragons featured just six upperclassmen on the roster. This season 14th-year head coach Cynthia Wetmore is certainly faced with a challenge as her roster includes just 12 returning players, nine newcomers and not one senior. The schedule includes contests against three of the top-eight nationally ranked teams in the 2011 Kookaburra/NFHCA Division III preseason poll.

In the offensive end of the field, the Red Dragons return three of their top-five point scorers from a season ago. Junior forward Sara Woodward led the team in scoring as a sophomore with 34 points on a team-high 14 goals and six assists, earning first team all-region and All-SUNYAC honors. Junior forward Danielle Groneman was third on the team in points last season with 22. Groneman, who was a second team All-SUNYAC selection, tallied nine goals and chipped in with six assists. Sophomore midfielder Erin Smith was named the SUNYAC Rookie of the Year and second team all-conference after scoring 11 points on four goals and three assists in her freshman season.

Junior Katie Barbagallo returns as a dual threat at either forward or midfield. Barbagallo saw action in 18 games with eight starts and scored one goal in 2010. Sophomore midfielder Karly Vdoviak had an immediate impact on the team as a freshman. Vdoviak played in 19 games with 12 starts and scored seven points on three goals and one assist. Sophomore Mallory Guerin returns at forward, having scored one goal in eight games as a freshman.

Other returning players who will patrol the midfield are junior Sam George and sophomore Holly Flanigan. George appeared in 17 games in 2010, while Flanigan, who may also see time at back, played in 12 games. Wetmore welcomes freshman Rebekah

Bernard at forward and junior Erin Carrino at midfield. Bernard helped lead her team to a state title at Freehold Township in N.J. Carrino joins the squad after playing two years of volleyball for the Red Dragons.

After having the luxury of an experienced senior starting all 21 games in the cage last season, Wetmore will most likely turn to junior Emily von Schondorf to step into the role in 2011. Through two seasons, von Schondorf has seen limited action but has a chance to make her mark this season. Wetmore has brought two freshman goalies on board.

Rachel Moccaldi was a four-year starter and three-time team MVP at Clinton High, while Amanda Perricone was a first team all-league selection as a senior and her team’s MVP for two seasons at Pennridge High in Pa.

Defensively, the Red Dragons return three juniors. Liz DeWaters has started 38 games in her first two seasons. In 2010, DeWaters recorded one assist in 21 starts and earned second team all-region and first team All-SUNYAC honors. Alexis Grable appeared in 18 games with 12 starts last season, and Brianna Petronio tallied one goal while seeing action in 16 games as a sophomore.

Five freshmen fill out the roster at the back position. Bri Musselman and Erica Wharton can each step in at back or in the midfield. Musselman started for three seasons at Freedom High in Pa., where she was team MVP and helped lead her squad to a division title as a senior. Wharton was a two-year starter at Putnam Valley, earning all-state honors as a senior.

Chelsea Dimyan earned first team all-state honors as a junior and senior at New Fairfield High in Conn. Melissa McKeveny was a three-year starter at Sachem East, earning all-county honors as a junior and senior. Stephanie Sorrentino started four seasons at Shoreham-Wading River and was an all-state selection.

Cynthia Wetmore enters her 14th season as SUNY Cortland’s field hockey coach in 2011. During her career, she’s coached 26 All-Americans, 71 all-region selections, 83 All-SUNYAC picks and the 2001 Honda Division III Field Hockey Player of the Year. She has also coached six SUNYAC First Year Players of the Year and seven SUNYAC Players of the Year

since the league re-established field hockey as a conference sport in 2000.

Wetmore earned national Division III Field Hockey Coach of the Year honors in 2001 as she led the Red Dragons to the NCAA Division III championship. The Red Dragons finished the season with a 19-2 record. In 13 seasons, her field hockey teams have a combined record of 208-48 (.813) with 12 NCAA and three final four appearances.

Last season, the Red Dragons tied for ninth nationally, finishing with a 16-5 record. The previous season, Wetmore led Cortland to a 19-1 record, a 10th straight SUNYAC title and a tie for fifth place nationally. The Red Dragons went 18-0 in the regular season, which was their second perfect regular-season mark in four years. In 2008, Cortland was 17-3 and also tied for fifth nationally.

In 2007, the Red Dragons finished 17-4 and advanced to the NCAA tournament second round. In 2006, Cortland tied for fifth nationally for the third straight season, finishing with a 19-1 record, including the program’s first-ever unbeaten regular season at 18-0. In 2005, Cortland tied for fifth nationally and posted a 15-3 record. In 2004, the Red Dragons also tied for fifth nationally with a 16-3 record. In 2003, Cortland tied for third nationally and finished the season with a 16-3 mark. The Red Dragons were 15-4 and tied for fifth nationally in 2002. They were 14-5 and tied for third nationally in 1999 and were 13-5 and tied for fifth in 2000.

Wetmore has been named the North Atlantic Region “Coach of the Year” in 1999, 2001, 2006, 2007 and 2009 and the New York State “Coach of the Year” in 1999 and 2006. She was also voted as the SUNYAC field hockey “Coach of the Year” in 2000, 2001, 2003 and three straight times from 2006-08.

Wetmore was named Cortland’s “Coach of the Year” in both the 1999-2000 and 2001-02 school years, recognizing her success in both field hockey and lacrosse.

Wetmore came to Cortland after a highly successful run as the head field hockey and lacrosse coach at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. She coached field hockey from 1990-96, leading the Northstars to the Section III, Class A title in 1996. Her lacrosse teams had a combined record of 152-14-1 from 1986-97 and claimed the first-ever New York State Class A Championships in 1995 and 1996. In 1997 the Northstars were New York State Finalists. She was named Section III Coach of the Year in 1996 and 1997 and Syracuse Herald American Coach of the Year in 1997. She has coached and played internationally in Australia, England, Brussels, France, The Netherlands and Scotland.

Wetmore graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. She earned a master’s degree in 1985 from Southern Illinois University, where she was assistant field hockey coach from 1983-85. While at Rhode Island she captained the lacrosse and field hockey teams which competed in the Division I A.I.A.W. Lacrosse National Tournament and the Division I A.I.A.W. Field Hockey Regional Tournament, respectively.

Prior to attending URI, Wetmore attended Herkimer County Community College from 1978-80. She was the school’s Athlete of the Year in 1979-80, a season in which she was a NJCAA hockey All-American while leading her team to a national championship. She still holds the college’s hockey record for most career goals scored.

Carolyn KingAssistant Coach

Carolyn King enters her second season as an assistant coach for the Cortland field hockey program in 2011. Prior to Cortland, King was an assistant coach for the Bates College field hockey team from 2007-09 and helped lead the Bobcats

to a berth in the competitive New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) tournament in 2008. She has also served as a coach for the USA Field Hockey Futures development program, the U16 indoor and outdoor Katahdin Field Hockey Club, as well as a U19 team at the National Field Hockey Festival in Indio, Calif.

King, who received a bachelor’s degree in English from Bates, played forward for four seasons on the field hockey team and was a four-year catcher for the Bobcats’ softball team. A native of Hanover, Mass., King competed in field hockey, basketball and softball at Hanover High.

Christine McCabeAssistant Coach

The 2011 season is Christine McCabe's second as a member of the Cortland field hockey coaching staff. McCabe, who served as a volunteer assistant in 2010, was a four-year starter for the Red Dragons. She earned first team All-America

honors as a senior and second team All-America accolades as a sophomore and junior. McCabe was also a four-time first team all-region and All-SUNYAC selection and was named the SUNYAC Co-Rookie of the Year.

About SUNY CortlandLocated atop one of the rolling hills in central New York’s “City of Seven Valleys,” the State University of New York College at Cortland was founded in 1868 as the Cortland Normal School, which included among its earliest students inventor and industrialist Elmer A. Sperry of Sperry-Rand Corp. fame.

Over the decades, the campus expanded and in 1941, by an act of legislature and the Board of Regents, the institution officially became a four-year college providing courses leading to the bachelor’s degree. In 1948, Cortland was a founding member of the State University of New York. Today, more than 7,200 students are pursuing degrees within the College’s three academic divisions — arts and sciences, professional studies and the school of education. Twenty-three departments with a faculty of more than 400 offer the SUNY Cortland student body 70 majors and 44 minors from which to choose. The College’s main campus covers 191 acres and includes 31 traditional and modern buildings. Fifteen of these structures are residence halls providing on-campus housing for approximately 3,000 students. Cortland also operates its Outdoor Education Center at Raquette Lake in the Adirondacks, the Hoxie Gorge Nature Preserve outside Cortland, and the Brauer Education Center on the Helderberg Escarpment near Albany. At Cortland, athletics are viewed as having an important role in the educational mission of the College. During the fall, winter and spring seasons, Cortland participates in 25 intercollegiate sports — 14 women’s and 11 men’s — in an attempt to provide a broad program which meets the needs, interests and abilities of its students.

The Cortland athletic program placed 16th nationally out of approximately 440 colleges and universities in the 2010-11 all-sport Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Division III standings. Cortland is the only New York school and one of only five nationwide to finish in the top 20 each of the last 16 years. Since 1989, the Red Dragons have captured 15 NCAA Division III team titles.

The College offers its student-athletes excellent athletic facilities. The newly-constructed on -campus stadium features two artificial turf fields. One field seats 6,500 spectators, the other 1,500. The Cortland football, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s track and field teams are among those who utilize the facility, which the New York Times called “...a new stadium worthy of a major university power.”

The Bessie L. Park Physical Education and Recreation Center, opened in 1973, features the Whitney T. Corey Gymnasium with a 3,500 seating capacity; the Olympic-sized Harriet Holsten swimming pool with gallery seating for 1,500; the Alumni Ice Arena, a facility which can accommodate 2,500 spectators; a 500-seat gymnastics arena; racquetball and squash courts; a wrestling room; modern athletic training facilities; and the state-of-the-art Francis Woods Fitness Facility.

Nearby Clayton R. Lusk Field House, with its tartan-textured surface, is home for the indoor track teams, varsity practice sessions and recreational activities. Cortland’s soccer teams play on T. Fred “Prof” Holloway Field, which has lights for night contests and newly installed bleachers. The College also has 22 outdoor tennis courts and two outdoor basketball courts and boasts Robert H. Wallace Field (baseball) and Dragon Field (softball) as part of its 51 acres of athletic fields.
