It is a privilege to bring greetings from the Board of Directors.

Red Deer Hospice continues to excel in providing quality end-of-life care for our residents and solace for their friends and family. We are blessed to have compassionate and outstanding staff and volunteers, as we main-tain consistently high occupancy rates.

This June brought the retirement of Brenda Watts as Executive Director of the Hospice. I know you all join me in thanking Brenda, for her unflagging devotion and leadership. We were very fortunate to welcome Valerie Hilario as Executive Director in August. The transition has been seamless and Val’s enthusiasm and experience in health care are wonderful contributions to our ongoing success.

Our focus on sustainable funding has reaped rewards with an increase in our Compassion’s Circle. Our diverse fundraising initiatives have proven very successful both financially and in continuing to engage our generous community in sharing the Hospice’s vision. Our Gala format is back by popular demand. Another sumptuous dining experience awaits all who will be attending the 2015 event.

With three new Board members joining us in January, the Board has been busy developing committees to increase Board efficiencies. At the 2015 AGM, we will say goodbye to Darwin Cooper, our Treasurer, who has done a yeoman’s job for the Society. His dedication and integrity will be missed and we thank him for his service.

Our tenth year of operations will bring exciting opportunities for the Hospice and our community. Stay tuned for celebration announcements!!

Executive Director’s Message

With a memorable number of years and commitment to hospice care in Red Deer, Red Deer Hospice said goodbye to Brenda Watts as Executive Director. She truly inspired staff to meet the hospice philosophy and improve the service provided over the past 9 years in operation. Brenda was pivotal in advancing hospice care in Red Deer to the high level it stands at today. I am very fortunate to step into a role Brenda so passion-ately established. I want to thank Brenda and everyone who has made my transition into the house as smooth as it has been. It is evident that I was not the only ‘new’ change to Hospice this year. All of our 2014 events proved to be a huge success. The Gala last January, took on a new format with Master Chef Michael Bonacini and Chopped Chef Massimo Capra. This hugely successful evening is being brought back with additional surprises for 2015. Executive Director’s Message (continued)

Volunteers who assist us with operating the facility and sup-

porting our programs and services have reached an all time

high. We have close to 150 volunteers whose assistance has

helped us run our events and meet the regular demands of

our home. Our volunteers range from hours on a weekly basis

to event participation.

Our bereavement coordinators continue to support residents,

families and staff with coping. We have an addition to our

staff with a new counsellor. We were sorry to say good-bye to

Simone, but are very happy to have added Margot to our

team.

As we gear up for our tenth anniversary in 2015, we continue

to manage our high occupancy rates and a waiting pool to get

into hospice. It is only with the ongoing support and guidance

from the board, the compassion and care from the staff and

volunteers and the continued support from the community

that we are able to provide the care that each resident and

his/her family deserves.

Val Hilario

Val Hilario accepts Gift in Kind donations from Rachel and Lauren Stillings and Rachel & Grace Spidell in September 2014. Every donation made to Hospice is greatly appreciated!

Nurse Manager’s Message

I want to express my delight at being able to address you once again as the Nurse Manager of the Red Deer Hospice. I returned to the position May 2, 2014 after a full year away on a medical LOA. As many of you know I faced my own journey with cancer over that year. With the love and support of my wonderful children and very dear friends I navigated through all the necessary treatments, surgery and complications. It took some doing to be physically able to return to full-time work and I am so very grateful to be here. Red Deer Hospice is running at full capacity most of the time now. Being constantly full has many challenges. Even though we may be full, the staff is diligent about providing optimum physical and emotional care to our residents and their loved ones. If we did not function as a strong team, we could not continue this level of care. Every nurse, care aide, volunteer, cook, counselor, housekeeper, administrative person and Board member is vital to the whole. I often find myself describing my role as “my dream job” - and it is. I

truly feel blessed to be working with loving, caring people in a place

of joy. I pray that one day every dying person – no matter what the

cause - receives the care that we all deserve at the end of life.

Cheri Purpur

Leaving a Legacy of Care and Compassion

Everyone knows that end of life is one of the most difficult times that anyone will go through. Often, it is hard for individuals who are dying to say good-bye and it is equally hard for the families and loved ones to return those good-byes. Not knowing what to expect and at what time, also makes this time of life uncomfortable.

However, our trained nurses, bereavement support coordinators, volunteers and staff at Red Deer Hospice are experts who help individuals at end of life and their loved ones to come to terms with what is happening to them. They assist residents (and their family members) to understand the dying process, what will happen and when. They make a challenging time easier to navigate and accept. But best of all, the care and hugs that they provide are irreplaceable.

We can’t all be front-line caregivers, but we can each leave a legacy

of care and compassion when we provide a gift in our Will to the Red

Deer Hospice. Our gifts will support the Red Deer Hospice team as

They deliver compassionate care to the terminally ill in our community.

By making such a gift to the hospice, we each can leave a lasting and

personal legacy to ensure that Hospice care will be available for

generations to come.

2014 Gala - Celebrity Chefs Our events this past year began with “Cooking up Some-thing New” for Gala 2014.

Hospice welcomed celebrated TV chefs Massimo Capra (Chopped Canada Judge) and Michael Bonacini (MasterChef Canada Judge) to Red Deer in early January to cook up something special for our Gala guests.

Michael and Massimo designed a fantastic Gala menu and our Presenting Sponsor, the Sheraton Hotel, out-did themselves in the preparation of that meal. The chefs then entertained onstage demonstrating prep of each delicious course with Gala guests helping with the chopping and stirring. Our band, Jo Hikk, later kept the dance floor packed. It was truly a special evening of great cooking, great company and great dancing!!

"bagged" it with this new format!

Hike for Hospice A Snowy Blessing!!

Next up was the National Event, Hike for Hospice, which took place on a snowy Sunday in early May. This was Red Deer's 7th Hike for Hospice with 200 hikers braving the snow and the cold to raise $25,000!

We are once again indebted to our Hike Sponsors for covering our event expenses so that all of the Hikers’ donations could go to resident care!

Page 12 Annual Report 2013-2014

The year 2014 brought some changes in Bereavement Support as Simone Schumacher left her position at the Hospice for new adventures. Margot Krulicki joined Maureen Fleming in the job-share position of Bereavement Support Coodinator in June 2014.

Our Bereavement Support Team continues to offer grief support groups which are run by trained Volunteer facilitators. In 2014 a March-April group ran with seven participants and a June-August group included six individuals com-pleting the eight week course. Margot and Maureen continue to offer one-on-one bridging sessions to the community with approximately six sessions occurring each month.

We facilitate continuing support to the families we are honoured to journey with, after the death of their loved one. Our trained volunteers offer follow-up phone support to family members for a year after a resident’s death. These volunteers have been kept very busy over the past few months and each carry a client load of up to thirty individuals.

With our house at capacity, bereavement support in general has been busy as both Margot and Maureen strive to offer emotional and spiritual support for our residents and their families. Family intake meetings, which include our Nurse Manager and one of the Bereavement Support

Coordinators, are being initiated with each resident and their family within forty-eight hours of admission. These meetings are proving to be an oppor-tunity to build an understanding, open, and compassionate relation-ship with our residents and their loved ones. Feedback from these conversations has included gratitude from our residents and families as they are encouraged to ask ques-tions and to share information that will assist our staff in making their

stay at Hospice as comfortable as possible.

In our role as Bereavement Support Coordinators we con-tinue to be touched by our connections with residents and their families and feel privileged to provide service to others at this emotional and significant time in their lives. Margot Krulicki and Maureen Fleming

Volunteers Make our House a Home!! We cannot say THANK YOU enough for the time and talents that our volunteers provide to help keep our Hospice home running at full capacity. Not only do they offer much needed skills, but they also bring so much love, joy and compassion to their tasks and to our house.

We are thrilled to be able to highlight just a few of our dedicated crew through our photo display.

Outside of the Hospice, many more volunteers spent countless hours to plan and bring our special events to fruition. Our events included Gala, Hike for Hospice, Mulligans for Hospice and Sunflower Luncheon. And even though we didn’t require a committee to orchestrate it, we still had 13 volunteers who gave up a Saturday to participate in the 1st Annual Ride for Refuge!

Don’t be fooled by only five photos – we have over 150 active volunteers – and we love each and every one of them!
