Auburn Hosts Regional Leadership Conference

In January of 2012 the Auburn Chapter hosted the annual Regional Leadership Conference for Region VIII. The chapter began planning the conference in August of 2011 and, due to precise execution, the conference was a big success. The conference was held on Saturday, January 14 at the Auburn University Student Center and Shelby Center. Over 230 brothers from 20 different chapters were in attendance for the programming portion of the conference, breaking the conference attendance record for Reagan VIII. Guest speakers included “AA” Miles Washburn, Region VIII Regent Chris Kilroy, “DD” Aaron Otto, Mike Carroll and several other prestigious Delta Chi alumni. Undergraduate programming, as well as Alumni programming was offered with a large range of topics for everyone to enjoy. Hosting the conference gave the Auburn Chapter a great opportunity to network with other Delta Chi chapters and get advice on how to strengthen the Auburn Chapter.

A WORD FROM THE WISE

“In the Winter Quarter of 1986 I transferred from junior college to Auburn. A high school classmate invited me to his house for rush. I really had no clue about fraternities, but I recall hearing someone there comment that another person “wasn’t Greek material.” Anyway, I realized that particular fraternity wasn’t for me, and the feeling seemed to have been mutual. Even though I was somewhat put off by my early encounters, I was still intrigued by the idea of joining a fraternity. The next year when Delta Chi began recruiting for the new colony at AU, it didn’t take me long to figure out that I had found the group I had been looking for all along. At some level, the comment mentioned above struck a chord that made me appreciate even more the chance to be part of something special. During our Associate Member program, I remember talking with Mike Carroll and Keith Shriver, who were assisting with the re-colonization. Their enthusiasm for the fraternity was impressive, and it’s no surprise that nothing has changed there. I lived in the house my senior year and wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. At the same time, I was content to let others take on leadership roles. I preferred to be a follower, content being known the quiet guy who made good grades. In 1997 I returned to Auburn as a faculty member. For the past several years I have served as the faculty advisor for the chapter. It has been extremely rewarding. I’ve seen the chapter go through good while struggling through rough stretches. Despite this, I sincerely believe we have a bright future. It is an honor to have the opportunity to try and repay Delta Chi. I consider myself lucky to have been able to watch students develop into men who will be difference makers in the lives of others. Occasionally when visiting the house, I still find myself thinking: “Wow. I used to live here”, and it is gratifying to be told by an active member that the house is “still yours also.” I hope the current and future brothers recognize and appreciate the positive impact of their fraternity experience. At the same time, they also help me to keep things in perspective. Re-

cently, one of the brothers introduced me to a new associate member as one of the founding fathers from “back in the day.” I thought it was my

daughter’s job to remind me that I am old.”

It is not uncommon for a chapter to experience a number of positive and negative turns throughout their many years on campus. In the Early 80’s the Auburn Chapter was no longer recognized by the university. However, near the end of the decade some of the Alumni had interest in attempting to reestablish Delta Chi. A new house was built and soon new members were introduced into the Auburn Colony. Greg Weaver is an alumnus who was part of the efforts to get the house out of its lowest point. Greg remains actively involved in the chapter today as Faculty Advisor to the undergraduates.

From the Eyes of a New Member

“Before coming to Auburn, I had no intention of joining a fraternity. Within the first week after move-in day, I realized I was in a whole new world. I no longer had my group of friends who I’d known sincepre-school. So, I tried to make friends with every new person I met: my neighbors across the hall, people eating lunch, anyone. I would meet some people, talk with them for a while, and then never see them again; not a great way to make new friends. That all changed with Delta Chi. I started coming up to the house, meeting the brothers, and actually making friends. I enjoyed being at the house and hanging out with the brothers so much that I decided being in a fraternity might not be so bad. When I received my bid to become an Associate Member, I accepted. During my time as an Associate Member, I learned what being in a fraternity was really about. It’s not about the parties or the girls but about being part of something bigger than yourself, being part of a brotherhood. The hard work you put in isn’t just for your own benefit, it’s

for the benefit of everyone. So when my time as an Associate Member came to an end, I had truly learned to put the Fraternity before myself. Initiation day was one of the best days of my life, not just because of all the hard work I had put in to reach that point, but because I was officially becoming part of something bigger, a brotherhood - but not just any brotherhood, The Brotherhood of a Lifetime.” Andrew Demers ‘16

MOM’S CORNER

The end of another year is fast approaching and so many wonderful things are happening. To begin with, we have eighteen new members this academic year. The kitchen has had it’s refrigerator, ice maker and stove/oven replaced. This makes “Miss Marilyn” very happy. Due to the stability and growth of the Chapter, the brothers are finally going to have a formal away from Auburn this spring. Once again, the Parent’s Club, will be hosting our annual Casino Night and Silent Auction on April 06, 2013. We hope that all of you will be able to join us.

The Ken Young annual $100 Club

What a difference four years can make! I apologize for not getting this letter out last year, we have already had some contributions this year. First we want to thank all alumni who have generously supported the chapter with gifts to the $100 club, for 2011, fifty-nine brothers responded with support exceeding $7,500. This was an increase in the number of donors by 19 and support by $2,485. All proceeds go to repairs and improvements to the house. We are also grateful to those alumni who stop by the house, offering a perspective from the past and hope for the future. Four years ago the chapter was struggling with seventeen guys in the house, no meal plan, and trying to gain direction. This year we have twenty-seven guys in the house, twelve double and three single rooms, we currently have forty-four actives and eight associate members. The Chapter goal is to increase the active number to fifty-five next Fall and this is doable. You see the article about the chapter hosting a very successful Region VIII Leadership Conference with 230 participants from the region; seven men attended convention in Pittsburgh. They have reached the highest level of campus involvement in the past ten years. In the past four years, your support has helped make significant improvements to the house, we have spent over $220,000 on improvements. A sprinkler system and some of the repairs were funded with an expanded note from the Fraternity’s Housing fund of $150,000. We have repaired major moisture damage from leaking A/C units, replaced all the closet, hall and bathroom doors, repaired or replaced all drywall in the dorm section, installed new carpet and several a/c units and a digital locking system for each room. Some of this was done with contractors, as well as, hard work and sweat equity from some of our undergraduates. We have a great deal more to do like refurbishing the baths in the dorm section and repaving the parking lot. This past Fall we replaced the oven, the ice machine and the refrigerator, and the HVAC unit for the downstairs. The house is thirty-two years old. We acquired 371 West Glenn in 1954, it was our home for twenty-six years. In the years to come, as the chapter gets stronger, we will have to make critical decisions going forward. Is it possible to again launch a successful capital campaign for a major renovation or would it be better to dream of an entirely new home for our chapter. These dreams can only happen through you, our alumni. Perhaps you will join me in making part of your final plans a gift to the Auburn Delta Chi Alumni Control Board, Inc. designated for chapter housing, or to The Delta Chi Educational Foundation, Inc. – Auburn E-Chi Fund. (E-Chi – educational chapter housing initiative), foundation gifts are tax deductible. Gifts to the Alumni Control Board are not tax deductible. Also we want to thank our Parent’s Club which over the past five years has provided over $18,000 support to the chapter for rush, furniture, TV, sound system, and events. Their annual fund raising program is Casino Night, which will be this April 6 at the house. If you have something to contribute to the “silent auction” or casino prizes please let me or Charlotte Danielson MOM know. It is a great time for all, brothers, guests, parents and alumni. I also want to mention our debt of gratitude to Brother Samuel Ginn, who came off the Auburn Board of Trustees last year. Brother Ginn’s service and support of Auburn University has been second to none, the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering has received national recognition and is an enduring legacy for Auburn and all those who are fortunate to know Brother Ginn.

Looking Back On The Past Four Years

In the Fall of 2009 the Auburn Chapter of Delta Chi was at an all time low. However, there were several brothers that demanded a new direction for the chapter. That semester the undergraduate members with the assistants of the Alumni Board of Trusties formed an action plan. The plan resulted in the revision of the chapter by-laws, rush plan, Associate Member Program, scholarship program, and several other programs. The current position of the chapter is a direct result of the action plan formed in 2009.
