“If you rest, you rust.” The late American
actress Helen Hayes is credited with this quote
from her 1990 Memoir entitled, My Life in
Three Acts. I recently saw this quote on
facebook in a picture next to a gymnast and
thought it was an appropriate concept in
regards to what I do as a chiropractor. If
taken out of context, one could easily argue
that this quote is false. Sure, rest is absolutely
essential for health, but in the context of joint
motion and how dysfunctional movement
affects your health, it’s spot on.
You see, as your body is adapting to the
stresses of life you develop dysfunctional
movement patterns in the joints of your body,
especially the spine, as a result of the physical
stress caused by your body adapting to physi-
cal, chemical, and emotional stresses. When a
joint in your body becomes fixated or stuck,
the health of that joint immediately begins to
deteriorate. Much like a hinge on a gate that
has been exposed to the elements and not
been opened for a long period of time, it
becomes rusty and stiff.
Last, but certainly not least, enjoy the article "Taking
Time for Gratitude”. We are grateful to be able to share
with you each month and from the feedback we get, it is
worth it! Remember to look at the recipe of the month,
participate in the health and wellness quiz, and pick a new
inspired read from the recommended reading page.
Until next month, here’s to your HEALTH!

When You Rest You Rust
If you don’t have a strategy for correcting
these patterns then they are definitely affect-
ing your health. This is what maintaining
health is all about. Your body has require-
ments in order to express health, and you
employ strategies for meeting these require-
ments...or not. Do you brush your teeth
everyday? If so, you are employing a strategy
for keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Do
you change the oil regularly in your car? If
so, you’re employing a strategy for keeping
your car healthy.
A healthy body requires that you consume
certain nutrients and avoid toxicity. A
healthy body requires that you manage stress-
es well and avoid negativity. A healthy body
requires healthy movement. A healthy body
requires a clear brain-body connection. These
are all requirements that can be met through
various strategies.

Chiropractic care is the only strategy that focuses on
keeping your spinal joints moving appropriately and the-
brain-body pathways clear.
Chiropractic, coupled with a functional fitness and mobili-
ty program, is a recipe for success and keeps your joints
from “rusting”.
If you get your spine checked on a regular basis, good for
you. If not, schedule an appointment today to get checked
and learn more about strategies for health.
Until next time...Live well!

Taking Time for Gratitude
When You Rest You Rust ...continued
The holiday season is quickly approaching and there is no
better time to appreciate everything that is and everything
that will be. Life is not always easy and we are all thrown
curve balls from time to time. Taking the time to be
thankful for the large and small things in our lives
helps us to remember how lucky each and every one of
us truly is.
This year has been the best year of my life. I am truly
thankful for everything that I have received. Even with all
of these amazing things that have happened in the last year
of my life, it is easy to forget how I got there and who and
what has allowed me to get to this position. Take a mo-
ment to look back and give thanks to everything that has
helped you along the way.
The most important, yet most underappreciated thing
we have is our health. Without our health we have
nothing. We forget how important our health is until we
have a situation where we either lose our health or are af-
fected by someone because of their health. Being grateful
for not only our health but also the health of those around
us is so important. In this aspect, I am truly honored to
help facilitate the health of the people in the practice. As
chiropractors, people trust us every day with their health
and the health of their friends and families.
Large or small, significant or seemingly insignificant, take
time in your busy day to give thanks for every aspect of
your life. Busy schedules, family and work seem to take
up so much time, so make a conscious effort to stop and
give thanks for all that you have!

Health Spotter safely back in the rack, but sometimes
a person becomes overwhelmed by the
weight and the spotter is needed to
lighten the load. We should take the
same approach when we are monitor-
ing our health and that of our families.
Take the time to understand adaptive
physiology. What I mean is how the
body should react to certain stresses. It
is normal and helpful to develop a
fever when there is an infection in the
body and it usually doesn’t need to be
suppressed. Vomiting and diarrhea are
often used by the body to eliminate
toxins and shouldn’t be suppressed
under most conditions. It is only in
prolonged cases or when dehydration
becomes a concern that we may need
to provide some type of intervention.
These are only a couple examples of
many that could be used. So again,
understand the body and how it reacts
to certain stresses and act as a spotter
who only intervenes when necessary.
In that way, just like someone lifting
weights, your body will adapt and get
stronger.
In the modern day world of 24 hour
news, reporters are quick to jump on a
story and often seem to exploit our
fears about the future by sensational-
izing and exaggerating everything.
I’m acutely aware of this when it
comes to topics of health.
Our health is our most precious
commodity and needs to be taken
seriously, so I’m not trying to down-
play its importance. I just don’t want
people to overreact when it is unnec-
essary. The reality is that society
seems blasé when it comes to the fact
that we are getting fatter and sicker
from chronic disease every year, but
goes into a full blown panic when a
cold is going around.
I think we all need to take on a
“spotter” approach when it comes to
health challenges. If you have ever
been weight lifting you know that if
you are going to move some heavy
weights it is important to have a
spotter to help you in case you get to a
point that you are unable to handle the
weight safely by yourself. Often the
spotter only needs to offer a slight
amount of help to get the weight
Chiropractic Principle #22: The Amount of Innate Intelligence
This month we move to Principle #22 titled: The
Amount of Innate Intelligence. As you will recall from
Principle #21, “The Mission of Innate Intelligence”, the
mission of Innate is to maintain the material of the body
of a living thing in active organization. In Principle #22
Dr. Stephenson explains the “Amount” of Innate.
In qualitative terms, from the Chiropractic text book,
“There is one hundred percent of Innate Intelligence in
every living thing”. Each living “thing” may have a
different quantity of Innate Intelligence so it is not equal
in all living tissue or organized matter. He states that in
every living thing there will be one hundred percent of
the requisite amount of intelligence.

If you are unsure of when intervention
is necessary, talk to your chiropractor.
Chiropractors have a great under-
standing of adaptive physiology.

2. If using parsnips, quarter lengthwise and remove the woody core
before cutting into 1-inch pieces.

5. Meanwhile, place walnuts in a small skillet and cook over medium-
low heat, stirring constantly, until fragrant and lightly browned, 2 to
6 minutes. Remove from the heat and add butter, cinnamon and a
pinch of salt. Stir until the butter melts and the nuts are coated.
Spread out on a plate to cool slightly.
6. Transfer the vegetables to a serving dish and sprinkle with the
cinnamon walnuts.

Next month we will continue the discussion of Innate
and begin to explain its function. We go from Mission,
to Amount, to Function. Until then, try going back to
read from Principle 1 through 22 and see if you are
following the evolution in train of thought that helps
explain your experience in life and how to maximize
your health.
As always, I hope you find this informative and
challenging!

Chiropractic Principle #22: ...continued
The Amount of Innate Intelligence
To understand this, we must understand that the amount of
intelligence is determined by the function and or the
performance needs of a living thing. If we are talking about
a slug for instance, we could easily understand that there
will be a lower level of quantity of intelligence necessary to
maintain the organization of a slug versus the quantity of
intelligence necessary to maintain the organization of a
human.
Either way, Innate Intelligence is always necessary, is
always present if it is a living thing, and will always be in a
quantity that meets the requisite needs of the organism.
Remember if we go back a couple principles, that the signs
of life are the evidence of the intelligence of life. So in this
regard if it is a living thing there is proof of intelligence and
the intelligence will always be the amount that is needed.
