ABBOTT NEONATAL STUDY 2011The 7th Abbott annual neonatal nurse studytook place on January 27th in Dublin and itwas attended by over 200 neonatal and paediatric nurses from all neonatal unitsaround the country. The agenda is determined by a committee of neonatal nurse managers, based on the current educational needs of Irish neonatal nurses. This years study day contained sessions onneurosurgery, Renal problems in the neonateand Cleft lip and palate management.

The 2011 Abbott Neonatal Nursing ResearchAward was awarded to a group of nursesfrom the Coombe Women and Infant'sUniversity hospital who completed researchon nasal CPAP related injuries to neonates.

The practical neonatal nurse research project called "Nursing Challenges of Non-Invasive Ventilation" was completed by Anne O' Sullivan - Advanced NursePractitioner, Mary Ryan - Clinical SkillsFacilitator, Anne Kelly - Clinical SkillsFacilitator and Nova Quaipos Staff Nurse, all based at the Coombe Women and Infant'sUniversity hospital.

Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure(CPAP), is a type of mechanical ventilationthat has been successfully used in the treatment of Respiratory Distress Syndromeof neonates for many years. While this

mode of ventilation produces adequate gasexchange and decreases the complicationsassociated with endotracheal intubationincluding BPD, ventilator associated pneumonia, volutrauma and subglottic stenosis, there is evidence that other complications including iatrogenic injuries to the nose can occur.

An increase in the number of infants withnasal CPAP associated injuries in 2010,prompted a team of neonatal nurses at theCoombe Neonatal Department to undertake a root cause analysis to address this issue. The nurses researched these injuries andidentified that Extremely Low Birth Weightinfants are particularly at risk as applicationand maintenance of the nasal CPAP device is technically more difficult in this populationBased on this, the nurses implemented aquality improvement pathway with the aim of reducing the number of CPAP relatedinjuries. Education sessions on the new quality improvement pathway were completed with all neonatal staff and since its introduction, no new nasal CPAP injurieshave been reported.

Nurses were invited to submit neonatalresearch that they completed in 2010 for a poster presentation at the study day, thisallowed them to share their research withtheir nursing colleagues. The research was

then judged by a committee of assistantdirectors of nursing and midwifery from theDublin maternity hospital and the Abbottneonatal nurse research award awarded tothe research, which represented the mostclinical value to Irish neonatal care.

The assistant directors of nursing and midwifery reported that standard of researchsubmitted this year was excellent and that it was a very difficult process to select oneresearch to receive the award. The researchentitled Nursing Challenges of Non-InvasiveVentilation was selected to receive the awardas they felt it was a project completely initiat-ed and led by nurses, that it was of very highstandard and that it was research whichcould easily be shared among neonatal units.

To add an international element to the studyday, Ms Rose Paulley, a nurse clinician fromthe Children's hospital in Winnipeg, Canadaupdated the audience on the management ofRespiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) prophylaxisin the Canadian state of Manitoba and howthey prevent severe RSV infections in theirmost vulnerable infants. RSV is a respiratoryvirus, which mainly circulates during the winter months and it can cause severe complications in premature babies andimmunocompromised infants.

DEB REWARDS HANDHYGIENE INITIATIVES

Deb has worked with Infection Preventionand Control Teams throughout the UK formany years with the objective to deliver thebest possible hand hygiene solution forworkers in healthcare.

Acutely aware of the issues that surroundinadequate compliance with hand hygienepractices, Deb launched the Take a MomentHand Hygiene Awards 2010 in conjunctionwith the IPS, to reward and promote initia-tives undertaken to drive improvement andencourage behavioural change amongstworkers in healthcare.

Entries for the inaugural awards were invited from Infection Prevention and Control Teams that had implemented an initiative to encourage and improve rates of hand hygiene compliance within theirspecific healthcare setting.

The winners of the educational grants; North East Ambulance Service NHS Trust,Tameside Hospital NHS Foundation Trustand charity Medical Support in Romania, all demonstrated original, measurable, cost-effective and sustainable improvementsin hand hygiene practice.

Discussing the quality of entries, AlanNelson, National Sales Manager for Deb’sHealthcare division commented: “It hasbeen extremely difficult to single out 3 win-ners from all of the entries that we received, due to the variety of innovative work in thefield of hand hygiene at present.”

Thoughts echoed by Sarah Murdoch fromthe IPS: “This critical area of practice is frequently under-valued in favour of newtechnology. Not so this year! We have some great teams who are improving compliance, developing new approaches to local ownership and delivering first class service in their workplaces. Lots tocelebrate and be proud of!”
