National and international level

National conferences During these multiple-day conferences (organized twice a year) all the AIESEC board members in the Netherlands gather together to get to know each other and to share experiences. These days consist of trainings and strategic sessions, where we’re all discussing the short and long term strategic direction of AIESEC the Netherlands. And most of all, it is all about fun and getting to know new people!

National involvement

Convents & Reception WeekendsEvery six weeks, the fulltime boards (EBs) gather for convents in one of our eleven cities. We discuss progress and strategies in our functional areas and align our operations nationally. Following convents, we organize Reception Weekends. These two-day events bring together (full and part time) members of AIESEC the Netherlands and our international trainees, for a weekend full of bonding and fun!

Every year AIESEC worldwide organizes more than 350 international conferences! Every member of AIESEC is able to attend these events. The special thing about such a conference is that you are able to interact with hundreds of students from all over the world. Nearly every conference is about personal development and about leadership. It is a unique experience to learn more about other cultures and countries together with students who do the same work for AIESEC but in a completely different country and reality. Next to that it is really amazing to meet so many people to build up a great international network. In summer 2015, all LCPs went to India to the biggest International Congress for students worldwide. In Spring 2016, LC Leiden-Den Haag went to Leysin to join the National Congress of Switzerland.

International involvement

The AIESEC structureGlobally AIESEC exists of 3 levels.

AIESEC international is the global umbrella of the organization. It consists of 22 people coming from different nationalities, mostly after a long AIESEC career in their own country.

The 126 AIESEC countries have a national board, a Member Committee. The MC of The Netherlands consists of 7 fulltime members who are responsible for coordinating and supporting the Local Committees of the Netherlands.

In The Netherlands AIESEC is located in 11 university cities: Amsterdam, Groningen, Delft, Leiden, Maastricht, Nijmegen, Rotterdam, Twente, Tilburg, Utrecht and Wageningen.

Our local office in Leiden exists of 29 motivated and ambitious students, divided in five different teams. The Executive Board is the fulltime board of AIESEC Leiden-Den Haag, consisting of 7 people. The Local Committee President and the Vice-President Finance & External Relations together form the ‘Head Office’. The other five Vice-Presidents each lead a team. The teams consist out of 4 to 6 part time board members. Parttime members work 15 to 20 hours per week and each position has a clear job description.

Executive board (EB)

The Executive Board is the fulltime board of a local AIESEC office. The EB of AIESEC Leiden-Den Haag is a team consisting of 7 people, working fulltime on:

• Continuity and strategic direction of AIESEC Leiden-Den Haag • Decision-making on a general level • Leading, motivating and supporting your team and all our members • Representing AIESEC Leiden-Den Haag on a national and international level

The Executive Board consists of:

Local Committee President (LCP) Vice President for Finance, External Relations & IT (VP FERIT) Vice President Incoming Global Talent (VP iGT) Vice President Outgoing Global Community (VP oGC) Vice President Outgoing Global Talent (VP oGT) Vice President Marketing (VP Marketing) Vice President Nour Project (VP Nour)

As a member of the EB, you facilitate all operations running in your local AIESEC office. You are responsible for the strategy and long-term vision of the organization. Every Vice President has its own team, with members who are working part-time on different functional positions. Exceptions are the Local Committee President and the Vice President for Finance, External Relations & IT: these together form the Head Office (HO) and do not have its own team.

The central focus within a board year in AIESEC is self-development, especially for an EB position. You will participate in several trainings aimed at full-time board members of AIESEC. These trainings will be organized both on a local as on a national level. Team management, strategy, self-development and coaching are examples of these trainings. Furthermore, you will bond particularly strongly together as EB and this will also accelerate your personal development. No one will know you better on a professional (and personal) level than your fellow EB members. You will go on an international conference together, attend many EB activities and trainings, and work together for most of your time throughout the week. These things make an EB position so special; it is both the ultimate personal challenge and great fun at the same time!

Local Committee President (LCP)

The Local Committee President has the final responsibility over all the operations and performance of the Local Committee. As an LCP you are managing the Executive Board on a daily basis and you ensure that, from a supportive role, you are there to improve the performance of all the teams in the Local Committee. As president, you are end-responsible for the strategy and planning of all the operations on a local level and the alignment of these plans with the national and global AIESEC agenda.

Together with your colleague LCP’s in all the other AIESEC cities in the Netherlands, you translate and improve the national strategy towards your Executive Board. Within the board, the president is the one that leads every meeting, prepares and plans activities ahead, keeps the overview of the ‘bigger picture’ and coaches the Vice Presidents in their personal development and team performance. Within the Local Committee, you chair the Local Committee Meeting, are the primary contact person for all information that comes from the national level to the local level, and take the lead in organizing local events.

As president, you are also responsible for the personal and professional development of the members of AIESEC Leiden-Den Haag. A significant part of the job is the management of the human resources in the Local Committee; recruitment, trainings, coaching, and human resource allocation are important responsibility areas of the LCP.

The president is the face of AIESEC Leiden-Den Haag towards external relations This accounts for the contact with other Local Committees, the national board (MC), and other AIESEC countries during international conferences. Furthermore, you will also visit many companies and organizations in-house, you will have contact with other study/student associations and you are the primary contact person for students that approach AIESEC.

Finally, as LCP you form the ‘Head-Office’ with the VP FERIT. Together you discuss the performance of the Local Committee, track the Executive Board’s performance, and make decisions about the direction in which the Local Committee, the Executive Board and the Head-Office itself should be heading.

Local Committee President (LCP)

“I can not describe what this year has given me in terms of development and fun. The responsibilities and freedom you get as a 'manager of your own small organization' are unique at this age. Getting the opportunity to lead an amazing group of ambitious and talented young people has been both extremely challenging and extremely satisfying. It has been challenging, because I've become involved in situations that I had never experienced before. I've learned how to become flexible and how to listen. I've learned so much more than university has ever offered me. The energy I get from the people around me, and the way in which I see them develop is amazing. Furthermore, the network I've built is extraordinary. Meeting so many new (international) students, companies, and organizations, has been an absolute blast. At the same time, I am sure they will be of great help during my further steps in my future career.. What did I expect when I decided to take this step? I thought that it would be exciting, big, out-of-my-comfort zone. But I never expected it to be like this. It is incredibly fascinating to work together to one big goal. With a diverse group of students you strive for the same values: creating responsible young leaders for today and the future. Seeing those small steps evaluating in some big, impactful movements is amazing. At the office, you work on practical projects, but you are mostly responsible for the long-term vision, strategy and coaching. During the countless convents, congresses, trainings and events you gain more personal and functional skills. While organizing fun activities and parties, you play a role model in the 'work hard, play hard' mentality of AIESEC. This mix of hard work and lots of fun has made me a fulfilled person in my role as LCP.” Leonore van Til , LCP 2015/2016

Vice President Nour

The reason why I enjoy my position in the Nour Project   is because of an countless number of reasons. One of them is because I get the chance to speak and work with around 50 students who don’t accept the world its current state and want to do something about it. Through the Nour Project I meet so many passionate people who have amazing plans, innovative ideas and different ways of thinking. I like the phrase different is just different and the Nour Project keeps challenge me to think that way. The role of Vice President challenged me in many ways. I had to change to think about what can be improved within the program, about what the team needs and how the team can develop, I had to present the Nour Project to 300 people and I traveled to a conference in Lebanon by myself. All these experiences made me learn more than I could have imagined. And the best part is, I have around 30 new friends.

The Local CommitteeAt our local office in Leiden we work with motivated and ambitious students in 5 different

teams. On a daily basis, we run our processes, we talk to students, to companies, we write

strategy, we talk to the network, we send and receive students to and from all around the

world, we organize events and of course, we have a lot of fun. In AIESEC, we work hard

and we play hard!

General Job Description

As a part time board member, you will spend an average of 15 hours a week within

AIESEC: this includes working with your team or function, but also working with AIESEC in

general and assisting the other teams. You will be working 1/3 of your time for your team,

1/3 of your time on function specific tasks and 1/3 of your time for AIESEC in general.

To give an idea of what this means a short overview is provided below.

Attendance at LC Meetings, Drinks and Activities

Tuesday evening is AIESEC evening. At 21.00h the Local Committee Meeting starts,

afterwards we always have drinks each Tuesday. Furthermore, you also have to be

present at LC activities such as kick-off weekends. These activities are important to

determine the objectives of AIESEC Leiden - Den Haag and laying the foundation for

your term and passing it on to your successors. To keep AIESEC Leiden - Den Haag

sustainable and to improve the overall quality, we need the entire LC.

National and International Conferences

We will promote the opportunity of going to national and international conferences in the

LC, so if you get the chance to join, do so! These conferences and trainings are very

inspiring! During the international conferences you meet AIESECers from all over the

world and have the opportunity to travel through the country afterwards.

The Local Committee

Events of Other Teams

For you and for the rest of the LC, it is nice if you attend as many activities as possible

of other teams. Therefore most of the times you and your team will try to help out other

teams in order to make each event or activity a big success. This way team activities

become AIESEC Leiden-Den Haag activities.

Trainings

AIESEC is about development of professional skills. During the year you regularly

receive professional trainings.

Take Over

After your AIESEC year you are going to hand over your position and tasks to your

successor. In order to keep growing and improving every year, we really need the

whole LC to transfer all the knowledge as good as possible. This is essential for a good

start of the next year and for the continuity of AIESEC.

“I joined AIESEC in June 2015 and it has been the best decision I made that year. I was placed in the oGC team (volunteering projects). I had two main responsibility this year: coaching students who go abroad and making sure that the process of people who go away goes smoothly. This year I have learned to organize, be task-oriented and apply structure in my tasks as a process manager, and I developed my coaching and people skills in my job as a student coach. So in this way I feel my function was the best of both worlds. AIESEC has given me the trust and creativity to carry out these responsibilities in the way I thought was best. AIESEC is an organization, which pushes you to do and be more, to care for world issues, but also focuses’ on developing your professional skil ls and practical experience.”

“My year at AIESEC has been an absolute blast. As a Talent Manager for oGC, it was my job to facilitate students with the help they needed in finding and completing volunteering projects successfully. This means that I spent a lot of time getting to know people and their motivations. Being able to assist and guide them through a challenging process was one of the most satisfying things I have done. Besides that, I had the freedom to be creative and take part in all other aspects of my team and so learnt skills on fields like public speaking, marketing and training seminars. Throughout your term you will do goal-setting and feedback moments, to reflect on what you want to achieve. Being surrounded by ambitious people changes your mindset on both a professional and personal level. I took what I learnt at AIESEC and applied it on various fields. These things are of course very helpful, but what’s most important for me is that doing this board year is great fun.”

“One year in Aiesec does not feel like enough time to spend in this amazing organisation. To me, being in Aiesec meant the perfect combination of work and fun, because I have progressed professionally while having the time of my life with wonderful and friendly people. As a process manager, I have helped students find out what they expected from an internship and how those requirements could be met. I have offered them guidance in working with our internship database, and I have told them what our association is all about and that once they leave on an internship, they leave as Aiesec ambassadors and must spread the Aiesec values. As a talent manager, I have offered guidance in leadership for students gone abroad. In Aiesec I have overcome my fear of speaking up, I have learned the importance of asking for help and helping others, I improved my communication and organisational skills, and most importantly, I have made friends for life “

“As a marketing manager I had the unique opportunity to design our marketing for an entire year. The unique aspect of doing this for AIESEC is that you are not bound to a predefined set of rules, but instead you have the complete freedom to be creative. That has been, in my experience, the best way to develop yourself. Creating your city’s marketing stunts while benefiting from the knowledge you gain from the trainings that AIESEC provides and experiences of other (former) members all over the world. “Hi, my name is Anique Kamphuis and I’m the external relations and acquisition manager of the Nour Project. After I became a Nour participant I was really impressed what AIESEC has taught me so far and I felt very connected to the mission of AIESEC and the Nour project. Therefore, I decided to become a team member of the Nour Project. My function maintains the relationship with the external parties involved with the Nour project with for example our sponsor the Lutfia Rabbani Foundation. This function gave me the opportunity to experience challenges in which I learned so much about myself. In my term I had the privilege to speak at the Middle East North Africa Trade Dinner in the Hague where I had to speak for 250 people (diplomats etc.). Before my AIESEC term I wouldn’t had dare to do it but my team gave me the support I needed which led to an amazing experience. This function gives a lot of freedom how you want to fulfill it. Do you want to attract new organizations to work with the Nour Project or do you want to intensify the existing relationships? It’s your call and that is what makes the AIESEC experience so amazing.” Anique Kamphuis - Nour External Relations and Acquisition Manager - 2015/2016

The Nour Project

“As the Human Resource (HR) manager of the Nour project, my primary responsibilities lie within the selection of Nour participants, and within the guiding and coaching of the Nour participants during their Nour experience. Being an HR manager challenged my skills in teamwork, thinking outside the box and organizing. I learned so much that I can’t even describe everything. The real focus point is the selection period in February. I facilitated, together with my team, a location, a selection method, a score chart for interviews, interviewees, contact with applicants and contact with the location. Also, I made an endless amount of timetables for during the selection week. So I learned both to organize a selection week, but also to think about ‘what is the perfect applicant’ and ‘what is the best way to select the perfect applicant’. What I love in AIESEC is that I could challenge the status quo and come up with new ideas for selection and student coaching. I implemented my new ideas, and it turned out to be a success. I am grateful to AIESEC and my team who have given me this opportunity, and I hope that next year someone else can challenge him or herself in this amazing function!”Kees Frijters - Nour Human Resource Manager - 2015/2016
