One of the significant features of this album is "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town." Another is new single, "Ruben James." Another is the over- all country feel. Another is the re- placement of delectable Thelma Cam- acho with look -alike Mary Arnold. ELLA ELLA FITZGERALD-Reprise RS 6354. Ella is getting ready to swing into the '70s with this up-to-date collection of songs. The contributing writers are Witham "Smokey" Robinson, Randy Newman, Lennon and McCartney, Bacharach and David, George Harrison and Nilsson. EUPHORIA Heritage HTS 35005. Two guys and two gals shout out with conviction on this very now al- bum. All the songs are now and the attitude is contemporary. Almost any of the inclusions could fare well as singles and the group should stick around for quite a time, too. WHEN I DIE MOTHERLODE-Buddah BDS 5046. New group of four fellows who make a blend of country and R/B music that sounds very commercial. They are augmented by a couple of other mu- sicians on this funky, together, happy album. "When I Die," "You Ain't Lookin' in the Right Place Baby." CRITTERS Project 3 PR 4002 SD. Jimmy Ryan, Kenny Gorka, Paul Glanz and Jeff Pelosi, who are the Critters, keep their funky love songs coming on this new package. None of the songs is familiar, but they all will be when the word on the attractive, exciting package gets around. THAT'S THE WAY GOD PLANNED IT BILLY PRESTON-Apple ST 3359. Funky pianist Billy Preston is this year's discovery from America on Ap- ple. The Beatles have taken Billy in enough to bill him on their singles. Anything Mel sings sounds like angel food cake, but the piece de resistance here is his reprise of Nellie Lutcher's "Hurry on Down." "Games People Play," "Willie and Laura Mae Jones," "A Time for Us," and others delight and relax. THE ASSOCIATION Warner Bros. -Seven Arts WS 1800. The Association seems to have grown by one member. Their music continues to grow, keeping in touch with the times as well as being lyrical and romantic. "Look at Me, Look at You," "Yes, I Will," "I Am Up for Europe." WITH LOVE, JERRY VALE Columbia GP 16. A two -record collection of Jerry Vale cuts that linger in the love corner. Stevie did a great sell job on it and he does the same on "The Shadow of Your Smile," "Pearl," "Yes - ter -You, Yester-Me, Yesterday." THE ROCK AND ROLL STARS VARIOUS ARTISTS-Buddah BDS 7503. Ritchie Valens, Bobby Day, Harold Dorman, Maurice Williams, Terry Staf- ford, Jimmy Clanton, Little Richard, Joe Jones, Frankie Ford, Ron Holdon sing their big ones on his "First Gen- eration rock/blues/early soul" album. Part of a new series. MORE SOUNDTRACK-Tower ST 5169. "More," a morality tale about im- moral people, has been getting marvel- ous reviews and crowds should follow. Pink Floyd's contribution, a searing, wistful score, should not be minimized and won't be when viewers leave the theater. FLAMIN' GROOVIES SUPERSNAZZ-Epic BN 26487. Finger -snapping music from a fun - loving new group with a cute and apt name, Supersnazz.
