How do you rebuild a society after a devastating civil war? Marguerite Barankitse was close to being

one of the more than 300 000 victims after the Civil War in Burundi 20 years ago. She survived and

became a major player in the peace- and reconciliation process in Burundi. Through her work more

than 20 000 orphans were given a future through housing and shelter, food, clothing and education. In

2008 she could see another major achievement of her work come into existence when she opened

Burundi’s most modern hospital in Ruyigi. Mrs. Barankitse is also the entrepreneur behind schools,

micro finance projects and the building of a mill and a dairy factory that will be operated by local

farmers. Thousands of her fellow citizens do benefit every day from her work.

But is it possible to build peace through social entrepreneurship?
