Recommended Organizational Structure
forThe University of Toledo
Presentation by Lloyd A. Jacobs, M.D.
Friday, September 24, 2010
Organization:A group of people joined in
a set of relationships for the purpose of carrying out a mission.
Organizational Chart:Rudimentary, inadequate attempt to
describe those relationships. Other more important relationships include the “customer relationship,” “scientific collaborations,” friendships.
My hope is to deemphasize the org chart not to emphasize it.
Purpose of Reorganization• Accelerate pursuit of
Excellence• Synergy, Creativity• Insure all have a voice• Efficiency and cost
effectiveness
OrganizationThe University of Toledo will
be organized into Colleges, Schools, and Departments.
Orthogonally there will be Institutes and Centers.
RolesBoard: State whether these recommendation meet their
expectations.Senior Administration: make recommendations, set timelines,
charge workgroups, assess performance, guide recruitments and assignments.
Deans: Guide formation of schools, sorting and evaluation of departments.
Senate / Councils: Sustain and improve quality of academic programs.
Faculty at large: Keep an open mind. Stay student centered.Students: Keep an open mind. Pursue their personal goals.

Recommended Subsequent Strategies
• To maximize continuity, every effort will be made to recruit Deans and Directors from within the University.
• Multiple workgroups, most co-lead by an administrator and a faculty member will deal with multitude of details.
Department Realignment and Merger/Reorganization
• A single or multiple taskforce(s) will be charged to review our 100 departments as well as our Centers and Institutes for the purpose of accelerating our pursuit of excellence and maximizing efficiency.
• This entire process will continue to be part of our strategic planning effort.
