FOREWORD
The discipline of Surface Science has opened up newer vistas in the arena of research and development leading to path-breaking innovations in Analytical Sciences, Catalysis, Chemical Reaction Dynamics, Electrochemical Sciences, Functional Ceramics, Optoelectronic Devices and Circuits, Plasma and Lasers, Plasmonics and Polymer Materials. This discipline has seen tremendous growth in the recent years in view of its applications in the area of manufacturing technologies, materials for energy applications and biomedical engineering. The challenges associated with high-impact industrial applications provide major thrust to progressive advances in Surface Chemistry. The
countless technological challenges in Surface Chemistry applications provide a fertile field for researchers working in the domain. The advancements made especially in the Surface Characterization Techniques, Catalysis and Nanotechnology has attracted the Scientists all over the world.
Dr.M.G.Sethuraman, Professor of Chemistry, Gandhigram Rural Institute has conceived this time-demanding National Conference “Recent Advances in Surface Science”, which attracted over 140 researchers across the country to discuss, deliberate and exchange the latest developments in the field of Surface Science. I am sure that the special volume, brought out on the deliberations made during the National Conference, will serve as a good reference material for Scientists working in the area of Surface Science in the years to come.

PREFACE
Gandhigram Rural Institute (GRI) is one of the fourteen Rural Institutes established by the Government of India in 1956, based on the Mahatma Gandhiji’s concept of Nai Talim. Situated in a scenic valley of Sirumalai ranges in the east and Kodai hill on the west, Gandhigram renders yeomen service to the scores of rural communities in its vicinity and beyond. In recognition of its outstanding services to the rural populace, the Deemed University status was conferred on Gandhigram Rural Institute in the Year 1976. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) conferred the five star status in 2002 and the institute was re-accredited with ‘A’ grade in 2010.
The Department of Chemistry of this institute contributes substantially in all the
three dimensions of education namely Teaching, Research and Extension. Its contribution to the research in the frontier areas of chemistry such as Applied electro chemistry, Natural products chemistry, Synthetic organic chemistry, Corrosion inhibition, Water treatment methods, Chemical kinetics and Conducting polymers is note worthy. Nearly 60 research scholars have been awarded Ph. D from this department and 36 research scholars are working for their Ph. D degrees. The Department is additionally funded by DST under FIST and UGC under SAP programmes. The Department has undertaken many research projects funded by leading funding agencies. The Faculty members of this Department have published more than 500 research papers in both National and International journals.
The National Conference on “Recent Advances in Surface Science” (RASS – 2013)
held during 14 – 15th Feb, 2013 has provided an ideal platform for academicians and researchers, working in the area of Surface Science disseminating knowledge and ensuring the exchange of ideas.
The Conference has evoked a tremendous response, across the country. About 130
research articles were selected for presentation in RASS – 2013. This compilation of research articles presented in this conference, would definitely serve as a source of reference in the field of Surface Science. The Editor wishes to place on record the financial support rendered by UGC and CSIR, New Delhi.
