Hello all and welcome to our spring issue and before I forget, Happy Memorial Day to you all. I know it’s not until the end of the month but it is such an important holiday. I would ask that you please pay your respects to those who have fought and died for our freedom. It is so easy to take for granted, so please honor our heroes.

We have lots to talk about in this issue. First, I’m sure you’ve noticed a big truck on our cover and that is a first for us. No worries, we still intend to bring you the same great info that we always have, only now with a bonus. Beginning with this issue, we are dedicating some space to our full size brethren who love to play in the mud just like we do, the main difference is that their tires cost more than ours. We would like to welcome everyone to our pages and we hope you enjoy our added content.

We also added a bit of local race coverage to this issue. We would like to hear from you to know whether you would like to see more of this for both quads and bikes. The race scene is hot and heavy here in good ole Pennsylvania and we would love to include some more of that action.

Our goal is to be your source for everything off road in PA and the sur-rounding region. There is power in numbers and the hope is by pulling all our off-road friends together, we can have a voice and make a difference in the off-road community. We need to stick together for the common good so we can get things done.

The sun was shining, the rain was gone, and it was finally time to get some seat time on the new Kymco MXU450i. A quick glance over the machine and you could quickly see that all the standard 4x4 features were there; push button four wheel drive, high/low transmission with reverse and front and rear cargo racks. Something extra that we noticed immediately was the standard 2” receiver for hitches. Nice addition!

With a push of the button, the SOHC 443cc fuel-injected engine sprang to life. Throttle response felt nice and the machine had no cold running issues. After it reached temperature it was

time to turn some laps on our test track. Shifting into gear was very smooth and did not require effort. A push of the throttle and away it went. And it really went! For a mid-sized machine it delivered great power! The suspension was very plush over rocks and obstacles but when pushed hard it was a little soft. The engine is very smooth and makes power right off the bat and does so all the way to 55mph, our indicated top speed. The fuel injection mapping is spot on and we noticed no hiccups or stumbles during throttle transitions.

Once on the track, we immediately began turning some hot laps. Again, this little guy has good power. Enough power to slide through the turn and lift the front wheels! There is a great balance of power, suspension, and braking on the 450i, something that is sometimes forgotten by manufacturers trying to out-perform the next guy. Going airborne (within reason) was also nicely handled by the 450i’s plush suspension.

Time to test the 4WD! It had rained the day before and left us plenty of mud to play in, and play we did. This is really where the 450i shined. A push of the button and this Kymco will pull you up and over most obstacles and through 2 1/2 foot deep mud holes!

At the end of the day the Kymco MXU450i LE worked great! Big time 4X4 Utility machine performance in a mid-sized ATV. The powerful SOHC 443cc liquid-cooled EFI engine fires to life at the push of a button with all the power and punch to tackle the most rugged trails and get you through the tightest corners. King of the Hammers QualifierRausch Creek off Road Park

Saturday, April 13, 2013, Rausch Creek Off Road Park hosted the Rausch Creek qualifier for the King of The Hammers. For those who may not be aware, King of the Hammers is like the Big Championship Game of off-road 4x4 racing. The object of this race is to go as fast as you can over extreme rock trails with the fastest time winning. Top ten finishers will move on to the King of the Hammers that will take place Feb 2014 in Johnson Valley, California.

The course consists of 5 laps - each being 11.5 miles - totaling a grueling 57.5 miles. With a mix of smooth logging roads and extreme rocks, the drivers need to tackle this terrain combining finesse and keeping pedal to the floor!

There are 3 classes at the Rausch Creek qualifier, 4600 which is the stock class, 4500 being the slightly modified class and the most popular, the 4400 Ultra Four class.

Throughout the day there was lots of carnage and rollovers. Broken axles, broken steering and wheels being ripped off were just some of the damages that occurred. An area ½ mile into the 11.5 mile course named “Jotter’s Way “ saw the most rollovers. A 70 ft. climb at a 70 degree angle that was topped with mud made this obstacle a real challenge. Twelve out of the 30 competitors failed to make this obstacle so their only option was to winch themselves up Jotter’s 70ft climb. Some drivers reached speeds of 80 miles per hour through rocks and washout trails. #5 Shannon Campbell was clocked going 82mph at one point on the course.

The race was dominated by #5 Shannon Campbell, #4421 Erik Miller and #4420 Derek West.

Shannon Campbell was in the lead for most of the race but during the last lap, Campbell broke his steering which gave West and Miller the top two spots and put them well on their way to represent the 4400 class at KOH. Shortly after passing the wounded Campbell, Miller’s buggy started acting up with engine issues which opened up first place to West with the fastest course completion time of 3 hours, 18 minutes, 11 seconds. 2012 KOH winner Erik Miller was able to nurse his tired buggy across the finish line in 2nd place with a time of 3 hours, 19 minutes, 57 seconds. Showing much resilience, Campbell was able to locate another driver whose buggy was damaged and who kindly loaned Campbell the parts he needed to bandaid his vehicle back together. He was not only able to finish the race, but placed 3rd with a time of 3 hours, 53 minutes, 21 seconds.

Out of the 27 racers in the 4400 class only 11 completed the entire 57.5 mile course.

The top 10 competitors now have to wait for next February to compete in the King of the Hammers . Some will attend other qualifying events to improve time and strategy that take place in Texas, Indiana, Nevada and various other locations throughout the USA.

Organizing an Adventure Ride in Your Area Over the winter I realized how many riders either needed places to ride or people to ride with. I felt that a weekly group ride was the answer, and the Michaux Adventure Ride was born. The first hurdle was finding a starting point that was easy to find, centrally located, and close to the forestry road system. After talking to Jeff Katusin and his friendly staff at Caledonia Power Sports, our new home was found. The shop’s location has dirt roads within one mile in both directions and is situated on US route 30 two miles east of Caledonia State Park. The next hurdle was finding riders interested in a weekly outing. For this I turned to the internet’s Adventure Rider forums. I used forums that local riders frequented, and the response was overwhelming. Interest came from an amazingly large area that covered folks living as far as over a hundred miles from the start. The last hurdle to clear before we could start was when the ride should begin. I canvassed interested riders for the best day to ride, and we settled on Thursday evenings. Initially, the start time was an issue, but we decided on meeting at 5:30 p.m., and as the days got longer we would move our start to 6 p.m. to accommodate more riders. On April 11th, Michaux Adventure Ride had its first outing. Attendance was a modest three, but we had a great ride. Fortunately, the forecasted rain held off, and temperatures were very mild. Just getting out for a ride was wonderful. The trees were in full bud, and the smell of spring was in the air. The objective of the adventure ride was to find new people to ride with and share the experience; I feel all three of us achieved that goal. Adventure Rides like ours are legal and happening all over the state. The best place to find a ride near you is in the Northeast forum at http://advrider.com, or you can organize one of your own. If you wish to start your own ride, there are few rules you’ll need to follow to make your ride a success: 1. Find a starting point with good parking that won’t be impacted by your presence. 2. Have a route planned in advance. 3. Have an emergency plan, and remember cell phones may not have service. 4. Use the T-CLOCS check prior to riding. T=Tires and Wheels C=Controls and Cables L=Lights and Electrics O=Oil and Fuel C=Chain, Chassis, and Suspension S=Stand 5. DCNR requires a permit if the number of riders is too large, so keep the numbers under 10 people. If our ride ever reaches 10 people, we plan on splitting the group and offering multiple rides.Get out there and enjoy what Pennsylvania has to offer. We really do live in a wilderness playground. Rec Rider at Ramey Poker RunApril 7, 2013 • Staff Report

It was a great day to ride the Ramey. The Somers and the Guyers give Rec Rider the thumbs up.

The Rec Rider crew headed west to Clearfield County the first week in April to check out a Ramey Poker Run. The volunteer fire company there has been putting on these runs for years as their major fundraiser for their company. The local land owner provides access to the land and the volunteers from the fire company help man the event.They hold a Poker Run here every month April through October with this being the first of the year. Close to 500 riders came out to support the cause. The course was right around 25 miles but we took a wrong turn at a play area and only covered about half of that. You’ll find the typical PA rocks along with stream crossings, play areas and plenty of mud holes this time of the year. Of course some choose the alternate ways around while some of us like to dive right in, so to speak.The fire company provides a food trailer and bathrooms and overnight camping is allowed. ATV’s, UTV’s and dirt bikes are welcome with registration opening at 8:00am and the ride starts at 11:00 with all riders needing to be back by 5:00. Costs to participate are minimal, and as I mentioned, all proceeds go to the fire company. I know this might be borrowing heavily from Jeff Foxworthy’s comedy routine, but there are a few questions you need to ask yourself honestly to figure out which side of the ‘off-road access’ fence you’re on. If you’re the kind of rider who heads out on public trails without a helmet, you might be part of the problem. If you’re the kind of rider who cruises the local trails with an alcoholic beverage in the cup holder on your quad or otherwise under the influence of alcohol, you might be part of the problem. If you’re the kind of rider who ignores ‘no tres-passing’ and ‘keep out’ signs, knowingly rides on closed trails or rides on property without clear permission or approval, you might be part of the problem. If you’re the kind of rider who ‘dusts off’ strangers parked along the trail or parking lot, you might be part of the problem. These and other negative behaviors and actions can impact the future of our sport more than you might guess. All of the foregoing behaviors have the distinct effect of annoy-ing or angering other motorized and non-motorized trail users, as well as the public at large, when they witness such irresponsible acts. I will never contend that off-highway riders will be embraced with open arms if we could just eliminate those negative behaviors; however, bad be-havior clearly does affect people’s perceptions of off-road riders. Those negative perceptions can turn against us when public referendums on additional access are sought at the local, state or national level. Sadly, negative commentary often seems to carry more weight than positive comments, especially when decision-makers are already pre-disposed against motorized recreation. The truth is that many off-roaders don’t look any farther into the future of our sport than their headlights can shine in broad day-light. There are probably numerous historical reasons why ATV’ers in

Pennsylvania have only 240 miles of available trails while snowmobil-ers have close to 2400. But, a lot of it likely has to do with negative perceptions by the public as well as state officials about the general “character” of off-roaders. Enforcement costs for trail regulation viola-tions are most certainly considered when any additional ATV trail miles are pursued with DCNR. Sadly, those “bad riders” (let’s call them the One Percent’ers), disproportionately affect the 99 percent of riders who DO obey the rules. IF we could eliminate the bad behavior mentioned previously, it would be one less factor for groups like PaOHV to have to contend with when working toward the goal of increased trail miles.

There are plenty of publications from DCNR and PaOHV which fea-ture the ethical standards we should all adhere while we’re riding. DCNR offers the “On the Right Trail” brochure as ‘an ethical guide for ATV rid-ers’. PaOHV has the SCORE (Safe Courteous Off Road Enthusiasts) inter-active training offered in conjunction with DCNR, and can be accessed at the official website, www.PaOHV.org and clicking on the ‘Training and Safety’ button.

Periodically, we should all evaluate our riding habits to ensure we are promoting a positive image for all off-road riders. First impressions can be lasting ones. Also, be mindful that being ‘involved’ in off-road riding means more than simply throwing a leg over your favorite ma-chine and hitting the trails. Keeping abreast of pending legislation which affects off-road access is a responsibility we should all take seri-ously. Get involved with groups like PaOHV and others who champion our cause. It really doesn’t take a lot of time. Doing so helps ensure you’re part of the solution, not part of the problem!

Completing the course and receiving the certificate provides the knowledge and skill to operate the machines in the various manners necessary to ride trails with confidence, not to mention that most children think it’s really cool to get their “license” in the mail!

The Hudson Valley 4 Wheelers offers one- or two-trail day and weekend rides per month to trails in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, or Pennsylvania. All HV4W trail rides are on legal land, either public unmaintained roads or on private land with the owner’s permission. Our member’s rigs range from slightly modified with 33” tires to fully-built customs. We pride ourselves on having safe and capable

vehicles. Whether you are a seasoned veteran or just getting into the sport, we have something to offer.

2012 was an exciting year for the HV4W. With 28 members and growing, we were able to wheel more private property than ever before. In addition to the runs put on by HV4W, we were also included in runs held by other NOVA members. Check out the website to see member’s photos from the rides.

For the 2013 season, we already have seven rides scheduled with more to follow. Our first ride is April 14th at a private property affectionately named The Dog Park. It’s a small, 10-acre property packed with rock obstacles. There is no set trail; just show up, air down, let everyone scatter and go for it, hence “The Dog Park.” Two more rides are scheduled on private property in N.Y. and Conn. for the month of May. Our two major events include a mid-July trip to MA Florida Vacation and a trip to Rausch Creek for NOVA’s Trailfest in August.

East Coast Four Wheel Drive Association

If you are a member of a four-wheel-drive club now, or would like to become part of a club, you should check out the East Coast Four Wheel Drive Association. We offer club memberships, individual memberships and associate memberships.

Since its beginning in 1969, the East Coast Four Wheel Drive Association, or EC4WDA, has grown to include membership in eleven states on the eastern side of the US. In the beginning the EC4WDA was formed primarily to regulate competitive events. However the Association has expanded and has become involved in all types of organized four wheeling activities such as recreational activity (trail riding), conservation of resources, working together to prevent the closure of public lands, public and membership education, search & rescue operations, and getting involved with our local communities through a variety of community services. The Association promotes responsible, safe, organized four-wheel-drive activities and services. Our competition events are run under strict safety rules and regulations. All of our sanctioned events are run under the Sanctioning Rules of our Association to provide the utmost in safety. Our running rules and safe tracks have been the template for many other organizations that desire to produce competitive events.

The EC4WDA is made up of clubs throughout those eleven states. Because of the wide area we cover, the Association became regionalized. By doing this, our club directors don’t find it necessary to travel great distances for regional meetings which are held twice a year (Spring & Fall). The annual convention of all five (5) regions is conducted in November of each year. At our Convention we also recognize our members who have gone above and beyond throughout the year with a variety of Awards to commemorate their achievements.

Communication for our members is established through our quarterly publication, The East Coaster. This newspaper is mailed to each member as well as sent to any business that advertises in our paper. The EC4WDA also has a recently updated website with a fresh new forum section.

The East Coast Four Wheel Drive Association is America’s second largest regional four wheel drive association. If you would like to become more involved in this sport, check us out on the web at www.ec4wda.org.

March 10th found the ATVingPA.com crew and members of the Rec Rider Army out at Lost Trails for an unseasonably warm group ride. The temperature climbed all the way up to 51 degrees for us to enjoy heading out and seeing all that Lost Trails had to offer. Not that it would have mattered much, the sentiment was the same all over the board: “I don’t care if its 2 degrees, I need to get out and ride!” As luck would have it, we had great weather and were all looking forward to a fun day of riding.

Having heard mixed reviews of Lost Trails, I was definitely looking forward to personally seeing how the trails were and what it was like. I was pleasantly surprised to find I had nothing to worry about riding there. There were plenty of rocks, that’s for sure, but that is part of riding through North East Pa. All in all, the trails were fun, and you knew you had ridden when you were done.

At the start of our day, we pulled into the parking lot and Tony, the owner, had a nice large area set aside for our group to park, a group discount in place, and was waiting to introduce himself and welcome us to his new trails. Tony was obviously proud to show off the efforts he and his team had put into the park and he could not have been a better host. Once we got all the introductions done and everyone was ready, we headed out on the trail to see the park and take a ride to the old tunnel.

Tony gave us a guided tour to the tunnel and back, and the tunnel is awesome, especially in the winter, with all the ice columns that go from the ceiling to the floor. The trails to the tunnel were fun, and went from rocky, to hilly, and up around some nice rock formations, to winding through the woods. There were all kinds of trails and Tony showed us a good sampling of them along the way. After we all made it safely through the tunnel and over the ice dam at the end, Tony showed us more of the park in a long way back to the parking lot for our potluck lunch.

Back at the lot, we nursed the couple of breakdowns we had, and got our now-famous ATVingPa potluck lunch ready to enjoy. Everyone brought something and we ate. After introducing ourselves to the new members, we all got in a group for the first “ATVingPA.com East Siders” picture! As usual, it was a great time and the tradition is becoming a signature part of the sites rides. If you’re interested, come check out one of the rides and see for yourself!

After lunch was finished, we headed back out to ride more of the trails and look for the “Top of the World,” a 360 degree view with a nice sheer drop off one side. It’s not bad at the very peak of the mountain, but to get down to the sheer drop takes some rock crawling and definitely keeps your attention on the trail. Once you get to the edge, though, you are rewarded with a wonderful view of a sheer drop-off looking out over the other mountains and a winding river. If you like to have some fun, and some rocks don’t scare you, this is definitely worth doing.

We wound our way back to the parking lot the long way this time and got to see more of the park’s trails. All in all, I’d say we saw about a quarter of the parks trails and Tony and his crew have every right to be proud of the work they’ve accomplished. Each trail we rode had a number and was well marked, and while we were talking to Tony about the trails, he knew each turn and part of the trail and has plans for every square inch of that place. We plan on heading back up there mid-summer and exploring the rest of the park. I am very much looking forward to watching the possibilities of this park come to life.

For me, ending a day of riding is never the best part of the day. In fact, coming back to reality and thinking about a work week and chores tends to make me wish I could find myself a nice cave out there somewhere to call home. Then, seeing everyone all muddied up, smiling and talking about having a great time makes it that much easier because there are all those people to share it with. As I looked out over the parking area and saw the group packing up and saying goodbye to each other I was glad to have been there and am looking forward to a summer riding season full of good times with family and friends.

Mid-April brought 60 trucks and over 1500 spectators to the Numidia Dragway in Catawissa, Pa., for the 1st Annual Horse Shoe Mud Bog sponsored by OK4WD, RRP Racing, G & G Stone and Bischoff Landscaping.

This family-friendly event allowed owners of all 4 x 4 vehicles to come out and have a rip-roaring good time in the mud. Five classes were formed based on tire size only. The event consisted of a 500-foot timed run

through the mud. Classes saw everything from bone-stock vehicles with 33” tires to 56” cut tire classes with full-blown mods under the hood.

The course was designed to award driver experience, not horsepower, with the fastest time of the day being just under 23 seconds. Finishes were based first on time through, then distance traveled.

The NEOC or North East Off Road Championship Series is in its sixth year racing the tri-state region. (N.J., N.Y. and Pa.) The Whitetail was the second race of the season and with two races under our belt, we are averaging 996 riders. It’s no longer fear that we feel when facing those numbers, we just know its a “pull up your boot straps and big boy pants, put your head forward and go til it’s over” type of thing, because you will get no rest or breaks until then. If you stop, you lose.

Every department is full throttle with no mercy or pity for the person next to you, because you’re living the same thing they are. I know that sounds harsh but it’s the straight-up truth. When it’s over, we holler, laugh and cry, give our hugs and say, “see ya at the next one.” That’s just the way it is now. The NEOC has officially become its own entity that runs on the blood of the staff and volunteers. I can’t express enough how much these people give to make such a thing as this a success. We are a unique group that keeps moving forward into uncharted waters powered and driven purely by the hearts and backs of regular Joes.

The series races youth and pitbike classes on Saturdays and adult classes on Sundays. Races average anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours in duration, depending on the division. Summer and Winter trailSThese trails are open during the summer and winter seasons. The summer season runs from the Friday before Memorial Day through the last full weekend in September. The winter season runs from the day following the last day of the regular or extended antlerless deer season as established by the Game Commission through the following April 1. There are some trails that remain closed until after the late muzzleloader season. Please check with the individual forest district to see when the trails will open for the winter season.

- Burnt mills - Pike County 7 miles of summer and winter trail. Access is from a parking area on Route 402, one mile south of Porters Lake. Registered Class II ATVs are permitted on this trail that are less than 58” in width and less than 1,200 pounds. Contact: Delaware State Forest, HC 1 Box 95A, Swiftwater, PA 18370. - adams & Cumberland Counties36 miles of summer trail. During the winter season the trail system is expanded to 42 miles by using some dirt roads that are gated during the winter. Part of the trail system is shared with snowmobiles when there is sufficient snowfall. The trail is located between Big Flat and Pine Grove Furnace State Park. Access to these are from parking lots located at Big Flat along Shippensburg Road about 1-1/4 miles north of its intersection with Route 233 and on Piney Mountain along Bendersville Road south of Pine Grove Furnace State Park. WHERE TO RIDE - ATV Trails on State Forest Land

Registration, Titling and Insuring Your ATVWho must register and title?All ATVs in Pennsylvania, except ATVs used solely for business or agricultural purposes, need to be registered and titled with DCNR. ATVs used in Pennsylvania must be registered and titled with DCNR’s Snowmobile/ATV Section. The ATV registration and titling fees are NOT user fees for the privilege of using trails on state-owned land. The fees provide funding to administer the program, maintain trails in DCNR-managed parks and forests, and provide grants to profit and non-profit organizations for developing additional riding opportunities.

Plates and decals An ATV owner will be issued a registration plate for the vehicle. An expiration sticker to be affixed to the plate will be issued for standard registrations.

liability insurance If you are using your ATV solely on land owned or leased by you, you are not required to get liability insurance. All other riders must carry liability insurance. Proof of that insurance must be carried with you when you ride. There are no minimum requirements or coverage standards established by DCNR or the Snowmobile/ATV Law for the liability insurance.

- Allegheny National ForestThe federally-operated Allegheny National Forest has more than 100 miles of ATV trails. ATV trail season runs from the Friday before Memorial Day through the last Sunday in September. Winter season is from December 20 to April 1. Contact the Allegheny National Forest Supervisor’s Office, P.O. Box 847, 222 Liberty Street, Warren, PA 16365, (814) 723-5150. Effective July 1, 2002, the Allegheny National Forest implemented the Fee Demo Program for ATV and motorized bike trails. An annual $35 permit fee is required, and can be purchased from any Allegheny National Forest office, and some local vendors, or online at www.fs.fed.us/r9/allegheny.

The following trails are within the Allegheny National Forest (ANF). Please contact the ANF using the information above concerning these trails:

Marienville ATV/Bike Trail on State Route 66 east of the town of Marienville.

Timberline ATV Trail accessed from State Route 948, north of Ridgway (also connects to the Marienville ATV Trail).

Rocky Gap ATV Trail accessed from Township Road 3005, southeast of Warren.

Willow Creek ATV Trail on the eastern side of the Allegheny Reservoir, just south of the New York State line. Closed during the winter season.

- Motorcycle and/or ATV Riding AreasSeven Mountains Ramble (Dual Sport Licensed Motorcycles) - Riding areas are located in portions of Mifflin, Snyder and Union Counties in the Bald Eagle Forest. Loop 1 starts at the 7 Mountains Campground, located just south of Potters Mill or west of Milroy on Route 22/322. Compensation for Campground owner for parking strongly recommended. Proceed on Sand Mountain road to the trailhead at Ground Oak trail. The loop is about 30 miles long. - Shade Mountain Trails - (Non-Licenced Off-Highway Motorcycles)

A big springtime “hello” from all of us here at Fisher’s ATV World! As most of you are aware, spring has finally sprung and it’s time for another edition of Tips, Trips and Trails. This article is on another great riding area that may be overlooked. When we talk about off-road riding, you might not think of New York. Upstate New York has so much to offer. If you’ve been there, you can attest that riding in this area is much like riding here in good ol’ Pa. The terrain and forests are so similar that you may forget that you’ve even left the state. Travel time from Pa. to N.Y. is really not that long at all. It took us approximately six hours from our Pa. office which is located in south central Pa. This puts it in reach of Maryland, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia and all states to the north.

Our trek led us to Lewis County, which is part of the Tug Hill Plateau. We went in the fall when the leaves were starting to change, along with the weather, and the scenery was very beautiful. One thing you will need to remember about this time of year is that the weather can change very quickly. One minute we were squinting through our sunglasses at the blazing sun and the next minute we were scrambling for our rain gear.

Our first stop in this area was a beautiful log cabin-style restaurant called the Timberview. The proprietor, John DeGuardia, was an excellent host for our time spent there. He owned the restaurant with a bar to wet your whistle, plus a hotel and a 144 acre play area adjacent to his property where you can find mud pits for everything from jeeps and trucks, to ATVs and side by sides. He also has fuel, oil and a parts store on site. John holds several events that throughout the year including Mudfest, which was underway while we were there. This area is also one of the trail heads. There is plenty of parking for your trucks and trailers, too.

The next stop for us was the Flat Rock Inn, where we met the owner, Gordon Yancey. He also made sure we had what we needed and was very helpful. The Flat Rock, as everyone referred to it, was very similar to Timberview. There is a restaurant and bar, rooms for rent, plus fuel and parts (like belts and tires) on site. They also sold the New York State Trail Permits needed to ride in this area. Other great amenities are an ATV rental fleet as well as a campground to pitch a tent or park your RV with 20, 30 and 50 amp service and a dump station for convenience. Flat Rock is also a trail head for the Tug Hill Plateau with lots of ample parking.

Lewis County was not always an ATV destination. Snowmobiling has been a sport here since anyone can remember. In the winter, snowmobilers can travel all the seasonal roads and enjoy endless miles of riding freedom. With ATVing becoming more popular, hunters wanted to use these roads as well. Lewis County paved the way for ATV usage on these roads and several counties followed suit which made this area very ATV-friendly. There are several food and fuel stops throughout the counties if you are out for a long day’s ride.

There are currently five counties that encompass the Tug Hill area; Lewis County, Oneida County, Oswego County, Jefferson County and St. Lawrence County. All of these counties have trails throughout, but they are not all interconnected as of yet. This is a work-in-progress according to Lee Staelens, who was the 2012 Tug Hill Expo director. Eventually, they want to have all counties interconnected so you can get on your ATV or side by side and never need to return to your car or truck all weekend.

When riding here, your machine will need to be registered and insured. New York does honor out of state registrations but if you do not have your machine registered, you can get it registered online from the Chamber of Commerce or select distributers at a cost of $65 yearly.

The Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival has finalized plans for the third annual event celebrating Butler, Pa. as the birthplace of the Jeep. New this year, the Festival will take place over three full days, June 14-16, 2013, at Cooper’s Lake Campground, just 10 minutes west of the previous location.

“We’re excited to grow the event into three days so Jeepers can make the Festival be part of a new Father’s Day weekend tradition,” said Patti Jo Lambert, Festival director. “The additional day gives Jeep enthusiasts the chance to have more fun with their family, whether they spend all three days in Butler County or attend the Festival and then return home for other family activities.”

The event will feature the popular Jeep Invasion in downtown Butler on Friday night, June 14, as well as a new off-road playground, mud pit, rock crawl, trail rides, WWII encampment, history displays, national vendors, how-to clinics, flea market and more each day.

Online registration for participants and volunteers will be available in mid-January. In addition to the new Festival Package, participants can purchase Jeep activities a la carte. The deadline for online registration is May 19, 2013.Cooper’s Lake Campground is now accepting camping reservations.

Campsites can be reserved and selected online at www.cooperslake.com. Prices are $10 per person per night. Children’s fees are $3 per person per night. Electric and sewage are available for an additional cost. The campground features large sites that can accommodate a variety of group sizes. Call Cooper’s direct with questions at 724-368-8710. Festival. Please volunteer some time to make this year’s Festival the best one yet. Jeep owners who volunteer approximately 8 hours will receive some Festival activities for free! Three Full Days of Fun All Festival activities will now take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Cooper’s Lake. The Festival will open each day at 9 a.m. and will close at 4 p.m. on Friday, 5 p.m. on Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Bigger, Better Trails The property at Cooper’s Lake will give off-roaders the chance to try new challenging trails. At least five different trails will be offered for both stock and intermediate Jeeps. Some trails will offer additional challenges for those with Jeeps equipped to handle such obstacles. Each trail will be nearly triple the length of those previously offered.

Expanded Times for Mystery Road Rally and Jeep Team Challenge The Mystery Road Rally and Jeep Team Challenge activities will be expanded to more hours on all three days to accommodate more participants. The Rally is a scavenger hunt that takes Jeepers on various routes throughout Butler County where they need to answer questions about places along the route. The Jeep Team Challenge features fun obstacles for a driver and passenger to do together. Last year’s teams had fun playing “broom ball,” driving in reverse, smashing water balloons and more. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of both activities.

Glacial Interpretive Driving Tour On Friday afternoon, Jeeps can enjoy a drive on Butler County’s scenic back roads and also learn about our geologic history. Three groups of Jeeps will visit three interesting geological formations made by glaciers that covered the area during the last Ice Age. Interpretive staff from Moraine and McConnells Mill State Parks and Jennings Environmental Education Center will offer a short hike and share details about each feature. The activity is geared for all ages.

Expanded Show ‘n Shine Classes and Trophies Stock and modified trophies will be awarded in most classes, giving Jeepers even more chances to bring home a prize they can proudly display. All winners will be determined by a panel of judges with the exception of Best of Show which will be voted on by the registered participants.

Little Jeepers Show ‘n Shine Kids of all ages will want to join in the fun and participate in the Little Jeepers Show ‘n Shine. Wooden toy Jeep kits will be available for purchase via the online store (available in February) and at the event. Jeeps can be painted and modified in any way and brought to the event for the competition or they can be painted on–site. Prizes will be awarded in various classes.

Jeep Competitions Several different free competitions are planned for all participants including a teeter totter and more. A trophy will be awarded to the first place male and female participant.

BBQ, Band and Bonfire The fun continues Saturday night at the Great Pig Out featuring an all-you-can-eat pig roast with all of the trimmings. New in 2013, hang out with your new Jeep friends around a huge bonfire and listen to the sounds of a live band. Tickets to the Great Pig Out must be purchased in advance and are required for entry to the band and bonfire. Registered campers at Cooper’s Lake Campground may also enjoy the band and bonfire.

Father’s Day Breakfast Start off Father’s Day with a hearty breakfast of all-you-can-eat pancakes, eggs and bacon on Sunday morning. Breakfast must be purchased in advance through the registration process or the online store.

Participant Package Offers Savings New this year, participants can purchase the Festival Package which offers a 30 percent discount on select activities. The package include the Jeep Invasion, Playground/On-Site Trails, Ruff ‘n Tuff and the Mystery Road Rally. Free Festival decals are also included. The price increases after March 31 and is not available for those who register on-site.

Dogs Welcome! Friendly dogs on leashes may join their pet parents at the Festival.

Participant Packets Will Be Mailed To make the trip to Butler even more convenient, participant packets will be mailed in late May. Pre-registered participants will now be able to proceed directly to Festival activities as long as items included in the packet are on display when needed and all passengers have spectator wristbands. On-site registration will be available at Cooper’s Lake beginning at 8 a.m. each day and also at Clearview Mall in Butler on Friday, June 14 between 2 and 7 p.m.

This issue, we received some goodies from the guys at Affordable

Offroad. Dan “Tubby” Billing, the owner of Affordable Offroad, is a well know name across the state of Pa. due to his manufacturing of parts for the off road community. Whether it is on tractors at local tractor pulls or pit crewing for the many rigs he supports at the Line Mountain 7 miler, he makes parts and pieces for everything. If you are going to build a custom rig, he is your man. Anyway, back to the toys we received.

First is the Accessory Mount. This neat little mount straps to any steel tube on your rig and allows you to mount anything from a fire

extinguisher, to a shovel, or even a flashlight. With its sturdy steel construction, you can add any item of your choice securely to your ride. When needed, it’s just a quick pull of a pin and the item is off and ready to use. It is great for those hard-to-mount items that don’t quite fit in the glove box or under the hood. Like all of Affordable Offroad’s products, they come in raw steel only. This way it allows you to paint or powder coat it to a color of your liking. We went with black so it matched the roll cage on our Kymco UXV500.

The next item we received was their 6” spotting mirrors. These things are built for abuse. With their 1’ steel tubing design, they can bash off of anything you come across on the trail. They mount to your roll bars with 2 steel hose clamps (included with purchase) which allows them to spin on your roll bars if your happen to smack them off of a tree. So rather than smashing the mirrors to pieces, they simply spin out of the way. We, however, opted to mount one in the center as a rearview-style mirror and chose to mount it a little more securely so it would not move on us.

LEWISTOWN ARMORY The annual Seven Mountains Jeep banquet was a big

success again this year. Around 86 Jeepers of all ages showed their support and had a great time with fellow Jeepers. Tons of great food included ham, meatballs, hotdogs, mac-n-cheese, baked beans and many covered dishes from the guests.

Many great prizes donated by local businesses were raffled off to help raise money for the Mifflin County Children & Youths’ Super Bowl Fund, a fund that helps make children’s dreams come true. This year around $500 was raised, and fun was had by all in attendance.

This was a great event; I had such a good time meeting new Jeep friends and talking to old friends. It was nice talking with Barry from Truck Stuff N More, Dan from Apple Hill 4x4, Denny who had an RC display, Zeke from Driggers Ink who had some great T-shirts, and I don’t want to forget Jim and Jonni from Eagle Valley Off Roaders. I want to thank Tim Yohn and the SMJ club for the invite. -RQ

Spring Training Youth Safety Refresher

As spring is here and we are getting the machines out of mothballs, or out of their winter clothes, lets not forget the little riders of the machines. If your child is anything like mine, they were out on their machines at every given moment and they’d stay out until they turned blue and were shivering if we let them. It almost seems silly in hindsight, spending 20 minutes getting them all dressed up in the warmest of clothes and then undoing it all 10 minutes later so they can use the bathroom, but we do it because they are worth every second. When we take their machines out, we always check them over to make sure the wheels aren’t going to fall off or the ball joints are tight or the headlights work and the oil is ok, much more then we generally do with our own safety.

This year, when you pull the machines out and get them ready for the warm riding season, why not go over a complete refresher with the little riders. I know, as a DCNR instructor, we offer the opportunity to any child who wants to come back and participate in a class for a refresher, free of charge. Not only does it help keep the class size up so our new young riders don’t feel self-conscious, but it also helps to speed the class along some. Nine times out of 10, the kids remember most of it quickly and remind us of the things we did different from their class, which not only keeps us on our toes but also helps the confidence level of the whole class. If you’re interested in this, check with your instructors and see if they are willing to do the same. Practice makes perfect, and the better they ride the less Tums we need.

On a different note, if they have taken a safety course, they will have almost definitely received some sort of course program or study guide. Take some time and go over it, make them ride the way they were shown at the Safety Course, it will not only give you some good quality time with your little ones but it will help them to remember all the things they haven’t thought about for the winter, and it will remind you of what to keep an eye out for to help them on the trail. And again, the better they ride the better we handle watching them ride.

If your riders under the age of 16 and have not taken the course, try to get them into one. Even if they ride like the wind, it is a state law to have any rider between the ages of 8 and 16 complete this course and possess the card for them to legally ride on State land. More and more private riding or “Pay to Play” places are asking to have their riders show they completed a course as well. It’s not mandatory at a lot of places yet, but the tide is starting to turn that way.

Most importantly, check all their gear, and make sure it still fits well. Check iff it is too tight, too loose, frayed at the snap clips on their chest protectors, or if their gloves have holes in them. If they aren’t comfortable they generally are going to concentrate more on their discomfort then they are

the trail. If they aren’t paying attention to the trail they are riding then they are not looking ahead to see what’s coming. Boots are always the worst with young ones because they grow so fast. There are many sites on the internet that list used riding gear. Look around, post your used gear up, earn some money; it is well worth the extra effort to make sure they have safe, comfortable gear. It’s always more fun riding home with young riders talking our ears off about the fun they had and things they saw as compared to how bad their feet hurt, or a headache from a helmet that’s too tight, or that they are all scratched up from not wearing a long sleeve shirt.

Going over the rules of riding with them, and refreshing them on what you expect from them is a great way to keep their attention while you go over their machines with them. The more they understand how it works the better they can tell you if something isn’t right. How many times has one of them walked up and said, “This isn’t right” then pointed at the machine while holding their helmet and looking at you like you’re crazy for not getting it. Repetition is everything when they are out of their element, and it can make for a pretty fun afternoon if you catch them on a good day.

Going over things and keeping it interesting and fun for the next generation is the best way we will be able to ensure that our sport is going to grow and thrive. I have enjoyed this since the early 80s and my children have enjoyed it since they were old enough to not fall off the machine. I am looking forward to being able to throw my grandchildren on a three wheeler in 20 years and send ‘em out there to enjoy the sport, and if we continue to work at educating the newcomers, young and old, we can make great strides at ensuring that.

Riding season is here!! As I am writing this article, the outside temperature is in the 70’s and the sun is shining. Well deserved after the cold month of March we had.

My goal this riding season is probably the same as everybody who is reading this great magazine, and this article: Ride More! We say it every year. For some people it works out and for others it does not, but we always try. Something I would like to recommend for everyone to do this year is try something different. If you like trials, hare scrambles or enduro’s, go to a motocross or road racing event. If you like road racing, touring or adventure riding, go to a woods racing event. Supporting all types of events helps support the promoters and clubs that organize and run the events, in turn, that is helping promote the sport we all love to do, which is riding our motorcycles and ATV’s. Also, attending these events will help you experience all types of recreational riding and racing. Who knows, you might find another way to enjoy a new style of recreation in the great outdoors! You will also have the opportunity to meet lots of new and interesting people along the way.

The Back Mountain Enduro Riders are very busy planning events for this year. Our hare scrambles will be held “Down by the River”. The AMA-points paying event will be held June 23rd and the ECEA event will be the weekend of September 21st and 22nd. The”Lawton 100” Dual Sport ride will be held September 8th. All of these great events offer great riding for all skill levels from beginner to expert. We also offer free camping for everyone that wants to travel early and enjoy some campfire racing. This is where we get to meet a lot of new friends and catch up with some old ones. We are also figuring out some dates for a couple club fun runs and working on a new design for our private track and working on a kids track. We are trying to introduce the sport we love so much to more children this year, as they will be the future of the club and the sport.

CMATVA Winter Club Ride

On March 16th there were 24 machines that came out for one of our winter hot dog cookout rides. The weatherman said we were going to get a dusting of snow that day so we all dressed appropriately. We quickly learned, however, that the weatherman isn’t always right, and when we stopped for lunch on top of the mountain on the Bloody Skillet State trail system we already had six inches of snow on the ground and it was still snowing.

As always, snow, rain or sun shine, all the club members had a great time. We rode about 40 miles that day and came across a lot of ice still on the north side of the mountain. Everyone had a hard time keeping the snow from building up on their goggles and windshields but it was a very safe and enjoyable ride through the mountain trails. This wasn’t our first ride in a snow storm nor will it be our last. On the positive side, there was no dust from the trails on this ride. We’re hoping to see everyone in June at the Cruise for a Cure.

Established in 2008, Eagle Valley Off Roaders (EVOR) is a family-based non-profit four-wheel drive club located in Central Pennsylvania open to all makes and models of full size 4x4’s. EVOR is committed to promot-ing stronger family bonds and raising children to both enjoy and respect their environment by maintaining existing public trails and expanding trails on private lands that are open to our use. EVOR participates in trail clean ups and cuttings to help ensure that future generations can enjoy our sport. EVOR does trail rides for first timers with stock 4x4’s, to highly-modified trail-only rigs. EVOR does local one day rides just to get away from the daily grind, as well as out-of-town weekend adventures with stories to tell. Everyone is welcome; young to young-at-heart! EVOR hosts an Annual Benefit Ride “Wheelin 4 Wishes” with net proceeds being donated to Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Greater Pennsylvania and Southern West Virginia. This ride is held in cooperation with The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. “Wheelin 4 Wishes” is organized within the Bald Eagle State Forest District utilizing Drivable Trails and other State Forestry roads. The first weekend in May, EVOR also holds an event, “EVOR 4x4 Adventure,” located in Snow Shoe, Pa. The Premier Sponsor for this event is Truck Stuff and More located in Bellefonte, Pa. This event offers many different challenges for your 4x4. There is an obstacle course with tests for every 4x4 from stock to highly-modified. The obstacles range from mud pits to a seemingly impossible tire crawl. Keystone Off Road Club was founded by a few friends who were not satisfied with riding on dirt roads, but wanted more challenge and fun. We are located in Lewistown, Pa., and have members around the state and some out of state. We are set up as a non-profit and the club doesn’t make any money from club membership dues. We believe in giving back as much as possible to our members, therefore we have set up many benefits for our members. If you spend money at our supporting vendors you will also save a lot of money through discounts, which makes your membership free. We have set up an e-commerce site and we sell LED light bars to raise money for the club operations. Soon we hope to have many other items for sale, including apparel. KORC is mostly a rock crawling and mudding club, although we do more rock crawling than anything. Our motto is, “If parts ain’t flyin’, you ain’t tryin’”. Our favorite place to wheel is Rausch Creek in Tremont, Pa., but we will go where ever there is a challenge. KORC created a Facebook account soon after we got a name for our club and the fan base has exploded, nearing 25,000 fans. We have mostly Jeep owners but there are Fords and Toyotas that wheel with us also; we don’t care what you wheel. Nor do we care about your build level or experience; we know everyone has to begin somewhere. When we do go to Rausch Creek we try very hard to make sure everyone gets some seat time. We run the green, blue, black and red trails. Our members are a great bunch, everyone gets along and we have a lot of fun, which is evident by all the smiles in the photos! We hope to make our first appearance at the All Breeds Show in York, Pa., this year and we will be next to two of our club supporters. Come by and say “Hi!”

Tri State Trail Riders got its start over a year ago by founder Mike Hunkele. It all started when he went from sport quads to utility 4x4 quads and he met up with some guys that introduced him to the coal region.... After getting to know some of the riders we started to set up rides in advance and that’s when I decided to start the TSTR page. It’s a way for all the riders to actively post what is on their mind, communicat-ing on a daily basis and a great way to set up rides. As time went on, we started to deal with the Pa. Game Commission posting on land and closing riding areas. This also caused issues with RAC permit holders as it made impassable pockets for riding areas. We were all naive to what was happening or just turned a blind eye until we realized what had to be done. The more we rode as a group and talked about the issues we decided to become proactive. We realized some land owners didn’t appreciate the damage some of the ATV riders were doing, such as destroying property, vandalizing equipment and buildings. Riding areas were ruined and land owners were put at odds with off-road rid-ers. We also knew most of the damage, such as dumping and theft, was not from the off-road community. TSTR started to become active, self-policing the ATV community on Facebook and seeking ways to get the word out that we all needed to be respectful and responsible riders. With 170+ Facebook members we decided to become an official club by joining the PaOHV and helping to support the off-road community and work on keeping our trails. As a club, we are striving to do more in as many ways as possible to support that community, such as con-tacting our State Representatives and Senators along with proposing a program to the Pa. State Game Commission that can be a win/win for both sides.

Mid April we load-ed up the rig and headed west to spend a day with the gang from Indian Creek Valley ATV Club located in Fayette County, Pa. The club grounds, located roughly 50 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, offers 32 miles of trails on 750 acres of land that is leased from many of the local land owners.The club currently has over 200 members who purchase a yearly member-ship to gain unlimited daytime access to the club grounds for their riding pleasure. Membership is open to the general public and the funds col-lected go to supporting the club throughout the year. In addition Yamaha Motor Company, through their OHV Grant Initiative program, has donated thousands of dollars to help support the club efforts.Close to 20 members greeted us with cheerful smiles as we pulled in around noon on a Saturday. Rec Rider would like to give a big shout out to Fred and his crew for getting out, grooming and cleaning the trails prior to our arrival. The day was overcast with temps in the 30’s as we rolled out of the parking area and the recent rains made for slick trails as most of the trail system falls under a dense forest canopy. The trails at ICV are typical of most of the trails we travel in the state of Pa. Offering a mix of rocks, mud (and did I men-tion rocks?) you‘ll find trails for all skill levels that are well marked for your riding pleasure. You can follow the yellow trail markers and end up covering 14 miles without riding the same piece of dirt twice. Red con-nectors off these trails offer more challenging terrain and offer differ-ent options for riders. When riding at ICV don’t expect a lot of wide open riding, the trail system is tight with a good mix of terrain that can be enjoyed by all. If you’re looking for a great place to ride and would like to ride with a great community of riders, then Indian Creek Valley just might be for you. They offer two open houses a year with the next one coming up on June the 9th from 9am – 3pm. For $20.00 you can come ride the trails and enjoy lunch on them. The end is near! The end to winter, anyway. With winter being my favorite time of year, I am always saddened when the days start to get longer as well as when the temperature starts to climb. I can just never seem to get enough of the cold and snow to truly say that I am ready for spring.

Although the winter is breaking, I am not too upset because this means that the activities that go along with spring are fast approaching. Trout season and turkey season is what is in store for me and my two boys. With the way our Fish Commission has our seasons set up, we can actually fish two first days, the first of which has already happened as I write. Now, I usually do not partake in the first trout opener because there are just too many people crowded into too small spaces. I normally do not like when someone catches my line and drags it to the bank for me, I can do that all by myself! After all, that’s why I bought a rod and reel combo so I can reel my own line in when I’m ready. It does not seem to matter how far away I walk to avoid lots of people. They just seem to find me and want to sit or stand next to where I thought was a faraway spot. Now, I do not want to come across as not needing any new “best friends,” like my friend list is full, but I simply want to be at peace with nature and my surroundings without learning someone’s life story. It would also be nice to catch a fish or two.

This year, because of my work schedule, I decided I would need to make every effort to spend time with my

two protégés, as they always want to do the outdoors things. This is why I decided, after ten plus years of avoiding the rat race, to jump back into it with both feet! The day started off early. As I remembered, I needed to beat the crowd to the best fishing areas before the next guy. So at 4:30 a.m., I rolled out of bed to get this party started.

This year, we had a special guest accompany us. My son Hunter’s girlfriend Katie, who just loves to fish but tells me she never catches anything, was going to go with us and hopefully change her luck. Katie had never gone trout fishing and did not even know what a trout looked like. The day before the opener, Katie told me she had her own rod. I asked her to bring it to the house so I could load the truck for our early a.m. jaunt. Now, not thinking about her tackle much, or the fact that she never trout fished before, she brought a

rod that appeared to be set up to catch Blue Fin Tuna! I asked her, “What, exactly, are you going to catch with that thing?”

She just shrugged and said, “A fish, I hope.” I told her if she were to catch a fish with that set up, she would probably rip the lips right off of it! With that, the kids were off to the store for an emergency rod search, and after returning with more acceptable gear, we were ready for our adventure.

Locked and loaded, we started our venture in the streams of Adams County. We found a spot that I had remembered from years ago, right outside Mt. Holly Springs. Not many people were at this area yet, but then again, it was still dark about 5:45 a.m. We set all our stuff up to save our spot and everyone went back to the truck because it was only about 26 degrees that morning. As we waited in the dark, I started hearing this low grumbling sound

emitting from the confines of my vehicle. At first, I was not sure if someone left the doors open and a badger or a bear got in, but it turned out to be somebody snoring. That sound will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up, for sure!

As first light finally came through the trees, we ventured creek side to ready our rods for the battle royal that was about to begin, or so I thought. Opening hour was upon us and the rods were zinging our baits into the moving water. As we fished, icicles began to form on the eyelets of my rod; I did not realize it was that cold. While I continued to try to catch something besides a cold, I noticed that one of my boys was missing. I decided to try another spot farther down the stream and as I walked past my truck, guess what I found? My youngest stretched out on the front seat catching zzz’s! So much for the opener for him. He lasted about ten minutes in the water and said he could not feel his hands. So, of course, sleeping in the truck was a way to thaw out!

The long and short of it was that none of us caught any fish, but it was still a great and beautiful day that I got to spend with my boys and a new family friend. Making memories any way possible, filling my internal hard drive with all the actions that led up to this day.
