    Thesetissmallsoitsgoingtobehardtoconfigurelights.LookingatsomeofthebehindthescenesfootageofWallaceandGromititsclearthattheyrigsomesortofbaracrossthetopofthesetwithspecialsmallersizedlights.Idonthavetheresourcestoreproducethisrigging,andregularlightswillmostcertainlyoverpowerthetinyset.Ihaveoptedtotrysomethingalittlerisky,Iamgoingtousedesklamps;theyaretherightsize,adjustable,andproduceacleanandfocusedlight.Iwanttopoolthelight,attemptasoftspotlighteffecttomakethebackgroundlessdistracting;theresatableandflowersandchairsandwindowsinthebackground.Iwanttotrycameramovementslikepansandslowpushins,butitwillbetrickytoachievecameramovementbecausestopmotionisdependantonconsistencyandthereisnotenoughroomtolaydownatracktomaintaintheheightofthecamera.ConsistencyincameramovementisgoingtobedependantonmypatienceanddiligenceinreferringbacktothepictureIjusttookandcomparingitwithmynextsetup.Thefilmitselfshouldbeshortandsweet,theeffortIputintoittimewisewillbefargreaterthantherunningtime.ImadethestoryconcisebecauseIwanttobeabletocompleteitontimeandtothebestofmyabilities.

  • ImmodelingmyowncharacterafteranearlycharacteroutAarmanStudioscalledMorphandthecharacterGumbyFromthemovieGumby.Thefeethavetobestableenoughtoholdupasurprisinglyheavybody,andthebodyitselfwillhavetohavesomesortofframetosupportthebodysmovements.Thecolourofthebodyismostlikelygoingtobepurplebecauseitstandsout,butitcouldalsobeyellow(Imleaningtowardspurple).Thefinishedproductshouldnotbehazedoroverlysoftlooking,Ireallywantacrispfeeltotheimage.Thecolourshouldfollowthissentiment,whitewithaslightyellowtone.

    ConclusionOk,nothingreallywentasexpected.First,whenItestedoutmymodelsabilitytoholdobjectsliketheknife,itkeptfoldingandfallingover.Itriedinsertingtoothpickstomakethelimbsrigidbutitdidnthelp.Inadditiontobeingunabletosupporttheweightofotherobjects,itwasverydifficulttomakethemodelslimbsstaybentinsimulationofbendingatajoint.Itwasthesetwofactorsthatmademystoryboardedideaimpossible.Ihadtoalterthestorytofitthecapabilitiesofmyclaymodel.Insteadofbeingthemaincharacter,theclaymantookabitofabackburnerrole.ThatisthereasonwhythefilmIsubmittedismuchdifferentfrommystoryboard.Afterthelittlehiccupswiththeclaymodel,IhadtoalterthesetIbit.EventhoughIblockedoutthelightwiththeflops,thebackgroundwasstillfairlyvisibleandsomewhatdistracting.SoIshiftedthesetover.TheunfortunateaspectofthatchoicewasthatIhadaweirdlookingbeigetilemotifgoingonthebackground.

  • Asidefromthosegifts,Ialsounderestimatedtheamountoftimetheshootwouldtake.Iplannedforittotakebetween6pmand2am,butIplanneditthatwaywiththenotionthatthatwasgivingmecushiontime;therewasnocushiontime.Iusedtwoofmylights,whichwasslightlydisappointing,butnotsurprisingseeingastoomanylightswouldhaveoverpoweredthesmallscaleset.Onewasthemainspot,andanotherIsetbackfromthesetawaysjusttosoftenthelookabit.Ireallylikedtheshadoweffectthatcamefromthischoice.IfIcoulddothisprojectoveragain,Iwouldfilmsomethingthatplayedaroundwithshadowsandreflections.Eventhoughtheconstantadjustmentandcomparisonwastimeconsuming,IactuallyenjoyedthefactthatIcouldbeasfussyaboutdetailasIliked.ieIcouldandwouldreshootthesameexactshotbecausethemodelhaddroopedslightly.Ilikethefinishedproduct,itsshortandsweetasIsaidIwantedittobe,thecolouriscrisp,anditflowstogethermuchbetterthanIwasexpectingformyfirsttryatstopmotion.TherewoulddefinitelybethingsIwouldimprove,suchasthecontrast,thevarietyofdifferentangles,andIcouldbeevenmorecarefulwithcontinuity.Allinall,Ithinkitdemonstratesattentiontodetail,anabilitytoconveystorythroughimages,andclearlightingandartistchoice.
