RECO’s Q and A Guide to New Mandatory Education Policy ................................................................................................ 18

REALTOR® Hall 2015 Course Catalogue
INTRODUCTION: The LSTAR Education Department, would like to present to you the initial 2015 CE Course line‐
up to be presented in the lower level Realtor Halls, at LSTAR. The content listed in this document is as complete as we are able to make it at this time. New courses may be added throughout the year and courses may be cancelled. We will keep you well notified of any additions or deletions to the line up. From time to time we will also be generating lists for specific courses that have not been booked in order to gauge member interest. The New Online Mandatory Continuing Education Program began on August 1, 2013 and we have included RECO’s Q and A guide within this catalog that will help clarify some of your concerns. RECO will be phasing out the old 24 CE credit cycle while introducing an online only education cycle that will still be mandatory for your license renewal every 2 years. During the 2 years commencing on August 1, 2013 and ending on July 31, 2015 you will have a number of options on how you want to complete your education requirements for license renewal. The attached Q and A will also explain the 4 options you have during this time period. Subsequent to July 31, 2015, your educational requirements for your 2 year license renewal will be the online RECO Update plus 2 online elective courses all of which are available only on the RECO online site. This new policy will make it far easier and cheaper to meet your mandatory education requirements. During the 2 year transition phase that will end July 31, 2015 and as an approved RECO education provider, LSTAR will still offer the CE credits for any course that meets RECO’s criteria for CE credits until July 31, 2015. The number of courses offered will be reduced in direct correlation to the demand for CE credits. No longer will you have to take a course or courses just to meet your license renewal deadline. After July 31, 2015, you will no longer be mandated to sign‐in and sign‐out in order to receive your CE credits. With the elimination of CE credits, no longer will your association have to limit or filter course content in order to meet CE guidelines. RECO has provided a positive and progressive opportunity for both LSTAR and its members to reflect on professional development in the real estate industry. LSTAR will still maintain a classroom curriculum with subjects relevant and current to the real estate industry. A recent educational survey clearly indicated that there still exists a definitive and substantial interest in material delivered in the classroom model. A greater importance will therefore be placed on the value of the course material and how it will positively impact your real estate career. A greater focus will naturally be on the positives associated with the classroom model. The classroom will once again bring like‐minded individuals into a group situation in order to discuss, reflect, and retain information that is relevant to their specific needs and interests. Our computer lab will still be utilized to deliver hands‐on courses that will assist you in your day to day real estate activities. Even with the advancements in social media, the classroom still provides a strong forum for networking and connecting face to face with past acquaintances as well as establishing new business relationships. A highly trained facilitator gives you the opportunity to question and clarify specific points within the course material while also sharing your personal thoughts and experiences with your colleagues. LSTAR believes that the classroom model is a necessary tool promoting your growth and success within the real estate profession.

In today’s society the need for the protection of personal information and property is increasing every day. How does the owner of a property listed for sale protect their information and personal property when anyone can obtain access to their home Answers to questions like this one and many more are provided in this course This course offers real estate professionals valuable information to assist their clients before, during and after a property is listed for sale, or rent, and sold. The information presented is valuable to anyone, at anytime, in their daily lives. Many of tips and ideas are, in many cases, already known registrants and the general public. However, because most members of the public are not affected in their daily lives by theft or identity theft, many people tend to disregard the thought of protecting their information contained within their own home. Seminar highlights:
• How to protect your personal information and the personal information of your family • How to detect if your information has been compromised • The legal authority of a real estate salesperson while conducting open houses • Personal safety tips

Fraud involving real estate is one of the most under reported crimes. Today fraud funds more illegal activity than ever before. There are more legal duties imposed on real estate registrants than ever before. New laws are being created that affect real estate professionals than ever before. Fraud and Real Estate offers real estate professionals information on how to protect clients, salespersons and brokerages from fraud. Fraud and Real Estate outlines the possible outcomes of what can happen to a registrant if they become involved in fraudulent activity. Fraud and Real Estate helps to eliminate many misconceptions that are prevalent in the real estate field. Many of these misconceptions are widely held to be legal, when, in fact, they are illegal. Recent decisions by regulatory agencies changed the way real estate may be offered for sale. Fraud and Real Estate is the only course available that provides the up to date information required to protect real registrants and their clients Through instruction and case studies the course will provide registrants with the tools to assist in the prevention of fraud related criminal and regulatory offences. The tools will assist registrants in protecting their brokerages and clients from criminal and civil liabilities that are not covered by insurance policies. Seminar highlights:
• Methods of how real estate fraud is committed 10

Reports of the outdoor air quality are regular and alarming to some. When we have a high smog alert, people are advised to stay indoors. But is that air any better. Statistics show that we spend a great deal of time in our homes. The quality of the air that is found there may not be as clean as we expect. Attend this seminar and learn about what contaminates are found in homes. Learn about tobacco smoke and what it can do, about pollutants from stoves, fireplaces and other appliances. What biological pollutants are lurking in your home? What of cleaning fluids, candles, air sprays, asbestos, radon, ozone and a host of others? This three hour seminar will provide you with the information you require to assist your client in understanding what problems may be found in this home. Topics include understanding what “Sick Building Syndrome” is, how to make that home smell great, just to name a few. Be an informed agent!

Mandatory Continuing Education Program Q & A Page 1 of 4 Jan. 18, 2013
Why is the program changing?
The original continuing education model served the profession well since it was established in
2000, but the landscape has changed. Since 2000, online education has become much more
common and provides many advantages. Technology and learning methodologies have advanced
greatly, but most importantly, the program needs to be focused on regulatory matters, related
topics of interest to all and delivered consistently across Ontario.
Is it true the program costs only $44?
Yes. The new program costs registrants only $44 for the entire two-year cycle. The fee is
based on RECO working on a cost recovery basis and delivering the program online.
Did RECO consult with registrants before making this change?
Benchmark Performance Inc., an independent third-party firm, conducted extensive
consultation with registrants as part of the education review process. 5,314 registrants were
invited to complete a survey on education, including new and experienced salespersons,
brokers and brokers of record. In addition, 2,419 registrants from across Ontario were invited
to participate in focus groups. Consultation also included industry associations, education
providers and other regulatory bodies.
The consultation process ensured that we understood the strengths and weaknesses of the
current program, and helped guide the development of the new program.
What does this mean for registrants?
The new mandatory continuing education program ensures a consistent learning experience for
all registrants in the province, and allows registrants to complete their requirements any time,
any place and at any pace. That’s a huge benefit in a busy profession. The course content of the
new program is focused primarily on RECO’s mandate of regulatory compliance, consumer

protection as well as current industry issues. Courses provide tools and guides that registrants
can reference in their day-to-day trading in real estate. In addition, registrants can track their
progress via MyWeb.
What does this mean for current education providers?
The new program is primarily focused on regulatory requirements and topics that have an
impact on all registrants, but real estate is a rapidly changing, complex profession. External
education providers will continue to play an important role in the delivery of education,
covering a wide variety of topics that registrants will continue to seek in support of their
personal business needs. There are many different skills needed to be successful in such a
diverse marketplace. Those needs will shape the types of quality education that boards,
associations and other professional education providers will offer.
Why is the program online only?
Technological advances make online learning, particularly for adult learners, the most effective
and efficient way to learn. The new mandatory continuing education program is focused
primarily on regulatory matters and it was extremely important that this program be delivered
in a consistent manner to all registrants. Online delivery provides that consistency.
Course content goes beyond basic text to include audio and visual content, interactive
elements and real-life scenarios, making the content applicable to day-to-day trading activities.
Tools and guides from completed courses will also be available via MyWeb as reference
materials for day-to-day use.
As well, with an online program, RECO can react rapidly to current industry issues to keep
content up-to-date and relevant.
How do I meet my continuing education requirement at renewal time?
Between August 1, 2013 and July 31, 2015, when registrants renew their registration they can
choose to meet their continuing education requirement under the new program or the original
program. However the RECO Update Course is delivered only by RECO as of August 1, 2013.

Mandatory Continuing Education Program Q & A Page 3 of 4 Jan. 18, 2013
How long does each course take?
Each registrant must complete a 4 module Update Course and 2 elective modules per two-year
registration cycle. Modules are not a specific length, but instead developed to cover specific
topics. They can vary in length, but on average registrants should allow 1.5 to 2 hours to
complete each one. As the program is online and self-directed, the pace is established by each
registrant.
How do you manage cheating?
Before starting the online program, registrants are notified they must declare their identity at
the end of each course in order for the course to be recognized as complete. Should a
registrant make a false declaration to allow someone else to take the program it would be a
clear violation of the Real Estate and Business Brokers Act, 2002. RECO will investigate allegations
of this nature and take appropriate action, which could include refusal to renew registration.
Does this alter the current registration education program in any way?
No, this change does not impact the registration education program.
Will it be possible to do courses on a tablet or smartphone?

RECO will provide more information about access through tablets and smartphones in the near
future. Check RECO’s website or MyWeb for updates.
Is this reducing the standards for continuing education?
Not at all. The new program offers numerous learning advantages. Registrants across Ontario
will benefit from a consistent learning experience for the specific knowledge they will need to
be successful. The program uses cutting-edge learning technology to incorporate audio and
visual content, interactive elements and real-life scenarios that make the material easy to relate
to. And importantly, registrants will be able to enhance their knowledge and skills with
additional training from third parties that cover additional topics that are tailored to their
personal business needs.
