Transcript of Real status reporting .. that people will read
Real Project Status Reporting… That People Will Read
Guy Jelley, CEO of Project Portfolio Office, who have worked
with over 200 project organisations in the last 10 years, provides
real life examples and experiences of the good, the bad and
the ugly of Project Team and SteerCom reporting.
Real Project Status Reporting… That People Will Read
Project managers spend too much time producing reporting
that is never read and adds little value. This case study
presentation will provide attendees with examples and
templates of status reporting that are generating interest and
engagement from project offices, owners and sponsors.
Real Project Status Reporting… That People Will Read
We will explore the must have’s and must do’s and discuss why
some of the existing reporting is not getting our project
communities attention. We’ll explore some of the more
innovative and disruptive ways in which project managers are
communicating project status to their stakeholders.
The story you are about to hear is true, except the names of the people and companies have been changed to protect
them from any further embarrassment

(… but a lot of projects and their project managers were!)
Move From:
• Ticking a governance box?
• Keeping the PMO happy?
• Avoiding an escalation on your PPM tool for not doing the report?
Why are you doing Status Reporting?
To Management of:
• Stakeholders
• Communications
About their Project Manager:
• Is my project manager in control?
• Does he/she know about the problems that are being experienced or could be experienced or will they be surprised?
Our Stakeholders ONLY Want to Know:
About their Project:
• Does each team member know what’s expected of each of them?
• Will we achieve our project goals and benefits?
• Where are we now and what can I expect in terms of forecasted final costs and completion date?
• How can I help the project?

Data
Data are discrete,
objective facts that
have no meaning in
isolation
Knowledge is information placed in
context based on facts and
meaning – it is actionable.
Information is data with
relevance and purpose. It
“informs” and caused the read
to change state

The council rejected our submission and thus we’ve missed the council
submission deadline
Latest Status
We missed the council submission deadline due to the council rejecting
the plan. The required changes were made by the architect, approved
by the client and resubmitted to the council. We’re expecting approval
by the end of the month and should catch up the “lost” 2 weeks during
the summer period.
